Navy veteran, 92, recounts that fateful day
Boston Herald, by Kathryn Breen

Ray Frazee said he can still remember the enemy plane coming straight at him as he stood on the deck of the USS Argonne docked in Pearl Harbor more than seven decades ago today. “It feels like you’re still there, you’ll never forget something like that,” the 92-year-old Wellesley man told the Herald yesterday. “One of my very best friends was killed that day,” he added, saying he notified the parents about their son’s death. Today marks the 72nd anniversary of the attack on the Hawaiian naval base where about 2,400 Americans were killed during that day of infamy in 1941. Frazee, a flute

Ray Frazee experienced life in America at a time when those who would attack our way of life would be faced with total destruction or "unconditional surrender".

I wonder how he feels today when those who attack our American way of life are voted into the White House, Senate, and Congress.

Not a criticism--just wonder why, Pearl Harbor has been at the forefront since it happened, as has the Kennedy assassination, but 911 seems to be fading in the dust bin of history more and more as the years pass.

The Republican Governors Association raised $23.5 million during the first three months of 2014, the organization will announce Thursday. It´s a record haul for the RGA, which is chaired by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R). The RGA has nearly $60 million in the bank, money it will need as it seeks to defend 22 seats compared to just 14 for Democrats. Most of the money the RGA raised came from the group´s 527 arm, which hauled in more than $22 million. The 501(c)(4) affiliate raised $1.3 million. One of the biggest players in Obamacare´s exchanges says 15 to 20 percent of its new customers aren´t paying their first premium—which means they´re not actually covered. The latest data come from the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, whose members—known collectively as "Blues" plans—are participating in the exchanges in almost every state. Roughly 80 to 85 percent of people who selected a Blues plan through the exchanges went on to pay their first month´s premium, a BCBSA spokeswoman said Wednesday. The new statistics, particularly from such a large carrier, help define how many people are actually getting covered under the Affordable Care

New Paul Ryan Budget Cuts Trillions

House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan on Tuesday released his fiscal year 2015 budget, in which he cuts $5.1 trillion in spending, mostly from health care, to balance the budget by 2024. The budget would repeal ObamaCare, including the money-saving Independent Payment Advisory Board, cutting $1.2 trillion in federal outlays. It turns Medicaid into a block grant program for states, which would save $732 billion over 10 years. It essentially aims to privatize Medicare, offering enrollees

Providing another dramatic example of its readiness to protect freedom of speech, the Roberts Court yesterday struck down a campaign-finance regulation that limited the total amount that an individual may donate to political candidates, thereby nixing a rule that had been in effect for more than 40 years. The plaintiff in the case was one Shaun McCutcheon, a conservative businessman from Alabama who argued that limits on his aggregate spending represented a violation of his constitutional right to free expression. The court agreed, 5–4. If the Citizens United case serves as any indication, the word “McCutcheon” will soon be hurled liberally

Since 9/11 almost 1,000 veterans have died due to negligence in the Veterans healthcare system. After lengthy legal battles the VA is finally making payments to their families. An Iraq War veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder and a history of drug dependency is found dead on the floor of his room at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs hospital in West Los Angeles after doctors give him a 30-day supply of the anti-anxiety medication alprazolam and a 15-day supply of methadone. In Shreveport, La., a veteran overdoses on morphine while housed in a locked VA psychiatric unit. In a Minnesota VA psych

Paul Ryan has laid down another marker. Pity he doesn’t have the power to lay down the law. Representative Ryan has a budget, and the Democrats do not have one, nor do they plan to produce one. The proverb holds that you can’t beat something with nothing, but that is precisely what congressional Democrats are going to do with this Republican budget, just as they have with earlier iterations of the same concept. Representative Ryan finds himself in much the same position as Senator Rand Paul: ready to lead, a bit short on followers. My recent pessimistic assessment of Senator Rand Paul’s

George Soros’ South American ex-squeeze can sue him for alleged assault and battery stemming from a bedroom brawl in 2010, the Appellate Division ruled Tuesday, upholding part of a lower court´s decision. But the panel tossed Adriana Ferreyr’s attempt to go after the billionaire hedge fund manager for infliction of emotional distress, a part of her suit that had previously been upheld by Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Debra James. In effect, the Appellate judges narrowed the focus of the case the Brazilian TV soap actress brought against Soros in 2010, when she sued him for breaking his promise to buy

A new burial area for lesbians only is being inaugurated this weekend in a two-century-old cemetery in the German capital. A 400-square-meter (4,300-square-foot) area of the Lutheran Georgen Parochial cemetery, established in 1814 in central Berlin, will be reserved as a graveyard for up to 80 lesbians, said Usah Zachau, a spokeswoman for the Safia association, a national group primarily for elderly lesbians. The association said it had created a burial area to be inaugurated Sunday, as a space "where life and death connect, distinctive forms of cemetery culture can develop and where the lesbian community can live together in the afterlife." ANN ARBOR, Mich. – President Obama compared the Republican budget plan to a "stinkburger" or "meanwich" during a speech here Wednesday, using a series of zingers in an attempt to strike a contrast with the GOP on economic issues in an election year. In a speech to an enthusiastic crowd of 1,400 at the University of Michigan, Obama repeatedly mocked Republican ideas about how to improve the economy, as he touted his own proposal to raise the minimum wage. Obama, who visited the local Zingerman´s deli before the speech, said that Republican proposals to cut taxes for wealthier Americans and

Big changes could be just down the road for North Carolina drivers. A proposal is in the works that would change the state tax system to charge drivers by the mile, instead of at the gas pump. The proposal would be to charge a half cent per mile for cars, which would generate almost $500 million in annual state revenue. A driver who travelled 15,000 miles in a year would pay about $75. "Basically you pay per the mile. As part of Morell´s testimony on Wednesday, the former acting and deputy CIA director acknowledged that he overruled the guidance of the top CIA officer in Libya at the time. That official told Morell the attack was not an "escalation of protests," but Morell said he had to weigh that against analysts who concluded the opposite. He ultimately went

With Chris Christie in deep trouble, Republican poobahs are reportedly looking to Jeb Bush to save their party in 2016. The former two-term governor of Florida speaks fluent Spanish, is a convert to Catholicism, and has high name recognition. Jeb could raise millions of dollars over night by just saying “yes” to running. Despite all this, there are strong reasons Republicans should say no to him. 1. His last name is poison. Let’s face it, if Jeb Bush had the last name of Something Else he would have already run for president in 2008 or 2012. According to a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll registered voters were asked if they would definitely NOT vote for Jeb Bush and 50 percent said they would not.

The human kindling that makes up the flammable Republican base may soon burst into flames, again. Portions of that excitable cohort are looking — some with fawn-like eyes filled with hurt, others with sparks shooting from eyes narrowed like gun slits — askance at other Republicans urging Jeb Bush to seek the 2016 presidential nomination. A candidacy by Florida’s former governor would be desirable. But if Republicans want to avoid intra-party carnage, they should be very careful about doing what The Post recently reported: “Many of the Republican Party’s most powerful insiders and financiers have begun a behind-the-scenes campaign to draft
