´Sound of Music´ nets big ratings
after Lady Gaga flops

Breitbart Big Hollywood, by Christian Toto

Original Article

Posted By:Judy W., 12/6/2013 7:12:07 PM

What a difference a week makes. Seven days ago, ABC turned over its Thanksgiving night programming slot to shock artist Lady Gaga, and the singer´s surreal pairing with the family-friendly Muppets flopped as a result. Last night, a three-hour, live remake of the wholesome classic The Sound of Music scored a huge audience for NBC, bringing it the kind of ratings success it rarely sees on a typical Thursday night. Fast National returns have The Sound of Music averaging a 4.6 rating among adults 18-49 and 18.47 million viewers. Easily the most-watched program of the night, it tied CBS´ The Big Bang Theory

They should have replayed the original. Remakes are never as good, but glad it out-ranked Glee!

I´ll bet the audience was made up of those mean spirited crazy Tea Party types and their lousy "home schooled" kids.

They are too dumb to recognize the enduring amazing talent of Lady Gaga singing half-naked with The Muppets.

There IS LIFE between New York and Los Angeles.

All snark aside, this shows that there is a market for good, clean entertainment. People want shows they can watch with their family and not be disgusted by the sex, violence or have some PC nonsense pushed at them.

Underwood did better with the songs than I thought she would - Broadway songs require incredible talent and training to do right - but she´s not going to win any acting awards.

And this wasn´t a remake. The Julie Andrews´ movie was a remake of the Broadway show.

I´m watching it now from the DVR. It´s delightful. Performing it live on a soundstage is a huge challenge. Kudos to Carrie Underwood for stepping up--big shoes to fill (albeit in a different format than Julie Andrews on film, which is the most well-known version). I like that they´re using the Broadway songs (all of which were not used in the film version). Love Audra McDonald as Mother Abbess. She´s wonderful. The kids are terrific and Underwood is very good despite the so-so acting. She can sing. 0verall, quite good for a live performance and I think it´s grand! Yes, Hollywood, there is an audience for clean, wholesome entertainment! Give us more.

Overall I enjoyed this performance very much. The set was fabulous; all the cameras enabled a seamless transition between scenes. I do agree with #3 regarding Underwood´s acting skills, but she performed the songs beautifully. This was quite an undertaking for her.

The children were also fabulous, and their acting was superb. Audra McDonald´s rendition of "Climb Every Mountain" brought tears to my eyes. It´s a song for the ages, so inspiring, which we need right now.

I watched The Sound of Music... Live Broadway does not translate to tv well... Carrie Underwood is lovely, a great singer , but she is no Broadway actress.

#2, last night´s production was done in New York. It was produced at the Grumman Studios in Bethpage, Long Island.

Grumman is where the Apollo moon lander was built, as well as many aircraft including the Hellcats and the F-14.

It´s nice they´re using the buildings for movie studios, but it would be nicer if they were still building aircraft.

I had a very pleasant evening in watching the show. I thought Ms. Underwood did an ab-fab job, given that it was a live show. The children we wonderful, too.

I was fortunate that I was able to enjoy the original stage production w/Mary Martin as "Maria." Loved Julie Andrews in the movie, too. But there´s just something about Mary...

It was a real nice change of pace and I was so glad I watched it. Carrie is no Julie but that´s okay, she was still wonderful. It was a production of the play so it was different enough that I was able to enjoy it for what it was instead of comparing it to the movie. Nice move for once NBC!

It was a great production. It was quite close to the Broadway original (which starred Mary Martin - who was also not the singer that Julie Andrews was, but a more animated and exuberant Maria). I also loved the fact that they put almost all of the original songs in the show - and in substantially the same original order. They left ´Somewhere in My Youth or Childhood´ in from the movie rather than the original ´An Ordinary Couple´. But it was a great show, and drew a great audience. You may sneer at Underwood playing Maria (it´s not really a belter´s part), but she did surprisingly well. The Captain was a little young for the part, IMHO, but he did well also. And it is further proof to the networks that quality programming CAN draw an audience!

Brava Carrie! The production was an absolute delight. Kudos to the entire cast and everyone else involved. This country sorely needs more such wholesome productions in weekly television programs, special television programs, motion pictures, and music. Enough of the blood and guts! Is it any wonder this country’s society has become so lawless with the incessant filth and crime being ballyhooed in the entertainment world? A form of Pavlov’s “classical conditioning” may well be a consideration in the lawlessness now permeating our society; a learned response by undisciplined individuals watching and/or listening to such garbage.
