Synthetic drug may have

Tampa Tribune, by Keith Morelli

TAMPA — Charlie Bates, the man who muscled his way into three apartments near the University of South Florida three months ago, sexually assaulted four students and terrorized dozens of others, was under the influence of methylone, a synthetic drug common in bath salts that can unhinge the user from reality. Bates, 24, was chased down by law enforcement officers the next day and killed during a shootout on U.S. 301 just east of Tampa. The autopsy showed extremely high levels of methylone in Bates´ body, according to the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner´s Office. “The levels in his system were

Comments:
Until about a year ago, I had no idea that bath salts were for anything other than a fragrant bath for refined ladies. Who´d have thought that some idiot would put these things into a pipe and smoke them? The perp in this story brutally attacked some young women close to where the 19-year-old daughter--a USF sophomore--of two very close friends of mine lives. While the crimes were going down, I was praying for my friend. And all others who lived near her.

President Barack Obama said Wednesday that he thinks Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick “would make a great president or vice president.” Obama and Patrick, both Democrats, are friends and close political allies. The two men have campaigned for each other, with Patrick acting as a surrogate for Obama nationally during the 2012 presidential race. Patrick has said clearly that he intends to return to the private sector when his second term as governor is up at the end of the year and will not run for president in 2016. But he has not ruled out a run for office in the

Are animal-rights activists really

Tom Wilson and Ben Cohen have already written on these pages about how European liberals, supposedly in the name of animal rights, are banning kosher (and halal) slaughter. In such cases, concern for animal rights seems to be a rather thin veneer for other political objectives that have far more to do with intolerant ideologies than they do with protecting animals. In the United States, animal-rights activism has found other pet causes but, at its core, activists seem less interested in protecting animals than in broader political agendas. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), a group that kills

Seizing on the sorrowful wake of the horror in Newtown, Conn., in December 2012, gun-control advocates redoubled their efforts, hoping – among other things – to turn gun-free school zones into really, really gun-free school zones. Plans were drafted to harden school entrances and hire additional armed law enforcement to patrol each campus, neither of which is a lousy idea. But Alan Hays, a state senator from the very heart of Florida, says it isn’t enough. On the theory that fences can be defeated and lone rangers can be distracted or leave campus for lunch, the Umatilla Republican wants school

A primary duty of a sovereign nation is to put policies in place to protect the country from both military and economic aggressors. This normally includes the creation of a capable military force (and protective military alliances) and competent economic policies to make sure the country is not dependent on key resources from or exports to potential enemies. Ukraine, for a variety of reasons, some outside its control, violated these defensive principles. (Snip) The Department of Energy has been engaging in regulation by strangulation. If it isn´t fermented in Tennessee from mash of at least 51 percent corn, aged in new charred oak barrels, filtered through maple charcoal and bottled at a minimum of 80 proof, it isn´t Tennessee whiskey. So says a year-old law that resembles almost to the letter the process used to make Jack Daniel´s, the world´s best-known Tennessee whiskey. Now state lawmakers are considering dialing back some of those requirements that they say make it too difficult for craft distilleries to market their spirits as Tennessee whiskey, a distinctive and popular draw in the booming American liquor business. John Kerry has said some criminally stupid things in his time. Recall, for example, this statement by Kerry from 2010 about Bashar al-Assad: "Let me just say that I am . . . absolutely convinced that carefully calibrated diplomacy, that if that is what we engage in, that Syria will play a very important role in achieving a comprehensive peace in the region and in putting an end to the five decades of conflict that have plagued everybody in this region." Stock markets around the world fell today, led by the 246 point dive, or 1.5%, for the U.S. Dow Jones Industrial Average and the 1.9% drop for German stock market index. Analysts generally pointed to worries about a shrinking Chinese lending and the potential trade war between Russia and the West, but I am more concerned that since the beginning of 2014 food prices have skyrocketed. The Federal Reserve must be concerned that their international support for “cheap money policies” to stimulate economic growth may be funding commodity speculation that is driving prices higher and creating wide spread misery.

The words came out of my mouth before I could stop them. “I feel sorry for Obama,” I said. As my wife looked at me in disbelief, I quickly added a correction. “Well, almost.” Beset by failures at home and abroad, the president cuts a lonely and sad figure these days. His aura of grief reflects his profound loss. His worldview crashed headlong into reality, and reality won. Obamaism is dead, may it rest in peace. Health industry officials say ObamaCare-related premiums will double in some parts of the country, countering claims recently made by the administration. The expected rate hikes will be announced in the coming months amid an intense election year, when control of the Senate is up for grabs. The sticker shock would likely bolster the GOP’s prospects in November and hamper ObamaCare insurance enrollment efforts in 2015. The industry complaints come less than a week after Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius sought to downplay concerns about rising premiums in the healthcare sector. She told lawmakers rates would increase in 2015 but
