When a tax is not a tax; when
a subsidy is not a subsidy:
the liberal-left´s Orwellian
assault on our language

Telegraph [UK], by James Dellingpole

Original Article

Posted By:Attercliffe, 12/6/2013 8:40:44 AM

Here´s some weapons-grade drivel from the Government´s Environmental Audit Committee. (What else did you expect from a panel chaired by Tim ´Trougher´ Yeo?) Globally, subsidies for fossil fuels exceed $500 billion a year. They are inconsistent with the global effort to tackle climate change, providing incentives for greater use of such fuels and disincentives for energy efficiency. [Snip] We´ve been here before, haven´t we? Lots of times. This fossil-fuels-more-subsidised-than-renewables meme has been spread, inter alia, by the Guardian´s ludicrous Damian Carrington; by Labour MP Barry "Dork Brain" Gardiner (Vice President of the sinister GLOBE international);

Comments:
"Weapons-grade drivel"! "Dork Brain"! JimmyD´s wordsmithing is manna from the Gods on an overcast morning. Just look at his example of what isn´t a subsidy but is often construed as such. It´s an argument killer to be offered not only when someone mentions "carbon tax," but very definitely when "free medical care" comes up.

We are under assault and propaganda is one of the weapons being used and this twisting of language is a component of that. I suspect we are mostly sitting around thinking no spit Sherlock, or something darned close. But there are useful examples of language change here to help us in discussion.

Dellingpole always hits the nail on the head. It´s too bad more people can´t read him. And thanks, poster, for introducing us to him quite a while ago.

´Spend´ and ´cost´ have been perverted in the same way as ´subsidy´ to refer to tax cuts: we can´t afford to reduce taxes right now, that´s just too much government spending. Or sometimes: reducing taxes would cost too much. Government spending has deservedly earned a reputation as wasteful, excessive, pork barrel and sometimes frivolous therefore bad. So by a sort of inverse Newspeak, calling tax cuts ´spending´ or ´costing too much´ implies they are a bad thing. On the other hand, as Dellingpole points out, ´government spending,´ however frivolous has become ´investing.´

Several of you have hit on other words which have had their meaning changed so as to confuse. However, no one has mentioned one of the worst, "cuts to government spending", which has now come to mean not increasing it as much as politicians (or others) had hoped to.

Apparently Justice Roberts is 100% down with the language manipulation...he must be, he didn´t understand that ObieCare is an assualt on our other rights guaranteed in the bill of rights...tax, it´s not a tax, it´s a penalty, pure and simple.

This is the moment a suspected Irish bomber blew himself up after it was believed that he forgot about the clocks going forward an hour for British Summer Time. Police are investigating whether the man, who was allegedly seen running from the scene covered in blood, had injured himself in the blast because he had got his timings wrong when the clocks changed. Officers suspect the bomber planted an explosive device under a Volvo SUV in the centre of Dublin and that it had either gone off too early, or he had returned to the car to investigate why it

In the nightmare world of George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four, three vast totalitarian states were permanently at war. Big Brother needed outside enemies to rally the masses behind his rule. As ever, real life suggests that Orwell was on to something: authoritarian states do seem more likely to go to war; democracies, by contrast, very rarely fight one another. The country which might have modelled itself on Orwell’s vision, North Korea, duly tells its people that they are permanently on the brink of war. Whenever the tension with South Korea eases, North Korea always turns the temperature back up again. Only

I’ve been too cynical about these debates: tonight’s was brilliant. How exciting to see two people, representing opposite ends of our political divide, actually discussing competing visions for what Britain is and what it should be. [Snip] Britain is increasingly no longer divided by Left v Right but by establishment v populists. It’s an exciting moment in our politics--and we have the promise of an EU referendum to thank for it. Farage won. In a heated and confrontational televised debate the leader of the UK Independence Party warned that extremists would resort to “violence” unless the European Union “ends democratically”. Early polls showed that Mr Farage won the debate comfortably, securing 68 percent of public support in a YouGov poll and 69 percent according to ICM. If the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) had been set up to investigate an apparent fall in global temperatures it is not hard to guess what its latest report would assert: falling temperatures will lead to mass starvation, millions of deaths from hypothermia, the smothering of northern cities with ice sheets. I have long come to realise how environmental science works: it starts from the premise that everything in the natural world is under threat, that mankind is to blame and that only drastic changes can save it. Before getting to the speech itself, it’s worth noting a few things. When the Democrats passed and Barack Obama signed Obamacare, the majority opposed it. About 56%, in fact. A majority have consistently opposed that law ever since. The Obama administration touted 7 million sign-ups by March 31 as “success.” When that goal appeared to be unreachable, the administration suggested that maybe 5 or 6 million would be enough. Now, as if by magic, they have their number. Somehow. All along, the administration has touted false numbers of enrollees. All along, the administration has neglected to admit that Obamacare is

A few months back, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius stated for the record that 7 million Obamacare sign-ups by the end of March would constitute success. She was clear about it. But then February came, and February always stinks. It’s just a lousy month. You’re tired of winter, you’re still miles away from spring, and no one was signing up for Obamacare. That 7 million figure looked totally unreachable. So Sebelius does what every other member of the Obama administration does when confronted with inconvenient facts. She lied. A triumphant President Barack Obama declared his signature medical insurance overhaul a success, saying it has made America´s health care system ´a lot better.´ But buried in the 7.1 million enrollments he announced in a heavily staged Rose Garden appearance is a more unsettling reality. With Chris Christie in deep trouble, Republican poobahs are reportedly looking to Jeb Bush to save their party in 2016. The former two-term governor of Florida speaks fluent Spanish, is a convert to Catholicism, and has high name recognition. Jeb could raise millions of dollars over night by just saying “yes” to running. Despite all this, there are strong reasons Republicans should say no to him. 1. His last name is poison. Let’s face it, if Jeb Bush had the last name of Something Else he would have already run for president in 2008 or 2012. According to a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll registered voters were asked if they would definitely NOT vote for Jeb Bush and 50 percent said they would not.
