France fights back against
German ´Sick Man of Europe´

Telegraph [UK], by Ambrose Evans-Pritchard

The overriding strategic story in Europe today is the breakdown of Franco-German condominium. The two great nations have together run the EU on a foundation of equality since the 1950s, always finding some way to bridge the chasm between North and South. It was stretched a little after France lost Algeria--a French Department, not a colony--and with it lost population parity. But that hardly mattered as long as Germany wished to tuck behind France, usually letting Paris take the lead. It was stretched a great deal further with the Reunification of Germany, driven home a few years later when a

Even by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change´s own lamentable standards, its new report--by Working Group III of the Fifth Assessment Report--makes no sense whatsoever. [Snip] Before the report´s formal release, US officials--who had seen an earlier draft--wrote to the United Nations demanding it be amended. "The discussion of the economic costs of mitigation is too narrow and does not incorporate co-benefits of action." Loosely translated this means: "If we admit how much we´re spending to such little purpose, the taxpaying public is going to kill us." So the report was duly amended to suggest that the benefits of wind turbines, solar panels,

Her dark, macabre tales of Gothic romance and revenge have enthralled millions of readers and remain in print decades after her death. But for Daphne du Maurier, the wealth and worldwide fame she earned from novels such as Rebecca and Jamaica Inn were a poor substitute for the acclaim she craved from literary critics who dismissed her as a second-rank “romantic novelist”. Now her only son, Kits Browning, speaking for the first time ahead of the BBC’s three-part adaptation of Jamaica Inn, has criticised the “Hampstead literati” for overlooking one of the last century’s most original literary talents. A total lunar eclipse will turn the moon a dark blood red tonight. Just after Mars reaches its closest point to earth in six years, a distance of a mere 57.4 million miles, a total lunar eclipse will spectacularly change the colour of the moon. But don´t get too twitchy with the curtains in the early hours--only people in north and south America will be able to see it with the naked eye. If you live in the UK, mainland Europe or most of the rest of the world by far your best chance of seeing the eclipse is right

If there was a standard operating manual for the secret services of the world´s dodgier regimes, it would no doubt omit any mention of the term "agent provocateur". In Russia, Burma, Iran et al, state-backed agents never get involved in causing trouble. Instead, there are only "patriotic local citizens", who, unable to contain themselves, rise up in righteous indignation against those who might betray the nation. That, if Russia is to be believed, is exactly what it happening in eastern Ukraine right now. According to a statement this morning from the Russian foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, there are "no Russian

The United Nations (UN) has delivered its latest verdict on the measures necessary to save the world from global warming and the news is as grim as it is predictable and wearisomely familiar: More regulation from "experts", technocrats and bureaucrats at supranational organisations, such as the one whose initials begin with U and end with N. [Snip] More nuclear power (with shale gas used as a transitional fuel to replace coal). The abandonment of fossil fuels. Less meat consumption. A single, globally-regulated price for carbon dioxide. More local-government-enforced walking, cycling and public transportation. More back-door wealth redistribution from the West

Big Brother isn´t watching you--but he is listening. The S.C. Department of Health and Human Services, one of the largest, costliest agencies in state government, pays Clemson University´s Social Analytics Institute $50,000 a year to "scrape data" from 150 million public, real-time feeds each day and report back to the agency what people on the Internet are talking about. That includes Medicaid patients who may be complaining about the application process on Twitter or bloggers who criticize Gov. Nikki Haley´s decision to reject Obamacare´s Medicaid expansion. But they say they´re doing this "social listening" in the name of customer service,

What is Vladimir Putin’s game? The recent unrest in eastern Ukraine has been presented by the Kremlin as an autonomous phenomenon, an upsurge of patriotic feeling among embattled ethnic Russians who long for the protection of the Motherland against what they see as a neo-nationalist regime in Kiev. It may be true that the initial impulse came from locals acting without Russia’s direct involvement. But it is becoming clear that, just as in Crimea, many of the “separatists” are not just taking their orders from Moscow, but are very probably Russian troops in paper-thin disguise. The key difference is that,

Ireland, once a rock-solid Christian country, has now become so intolerant of Christian beliefs that its leading opponent of gay marriage may be forced to leave the country because of fears for his personal safety. After repeated threats and obscene verbal attacks, John Waters, a nationally-known newspaper columnist, author and broadcaster who supports Christian family traditions, says he is now unable to go into the centre of Dublin at night because he fears for his own safety. The attacks began after Waters threatened the state-owned broadcaster RTE with legal action after a drag queen called ‘Panti Bliss’ appeared on a television programme

Let me obliterate a bit of confusion here: the Obama administration attempted to go to war with a rancher in Nevada. Let me amplify a little bit of truth: They tucked tail and have returned home. As the nation began to become familiar with the plight of the family of Cliven Bundy, many of us harkened back to another standoff in which the Federal government attempted to bully it´s outcome: Waco, Texas and the Branch Davidian massacre. They’re both qualified, respectful of each other (shocker!), and represent the vast majority of middle America. So what’s not to like about another Clinton/Bush race for 2016? When you mention the prospect of Clinton vs. Bush 2016 a funny thing happens. First, there is the reflexive response: "Oh no, not again. We don´t need more dynastic politics in this country." But upon further reflection, you realize Jeb Bush vs. Hillary Clinton would be a great race and actually good for the country. Let´s review. QUALIFICATIONS—THEY’VE BOTH GOT THEM. Barack Obama won the presidency because in an election where the premium was on change, it mattered little

A rapid shift to wind and solar power is needed if the world is to avoid catastrophic global warming, the United Nations warns in a crucial report today. Emissions of greenhouse gases need to be cut by up to 70 per cent before 2050 to control climate change, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) says. ‘Large-scale changes in energy systems’ are required, with coal power stations to be switched off and replaced by wind and solar. And the transformation needs to be made in the next 15 years or controlling climate change will become increasingly harder and more expensive. The report was published

Chelsea Clinton says when people ask her these days whether she wants to go into politics, her answer isn’t an automatic “no.” The 34-year-old former first daughter told Fast Company in an interview published Monday, “for so long the answer was just a visceral no. Not because I had made any conscientious, deliberate decision, but since people had been asking for as long as literally I could remember, it was no." Now, the only child of former President Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton explains, "I live in a city and a state and a country where I

Although the Civil Rights Act, the landmark legislation which just reached its 50th anniversary, made great strides in desegregating the economy, economic discrimination is still widespread, and anti-discrimination legislation alone can never rectify the economic damage inflicted upon blacks by slavery and our Jim Crow apartheid regime. The Civil Rights Act was a mild reform, all things considered, but one conservatives fought with vigor and one many conservatives are still bitter about to this day. When the Civil Rights Act passed in 1964, the primary purpose was to root out discrimination in public accommodations (like hotels and movie theaters)

LAS VEGAS — The Nevada Republican Party stripped opposition to abortion and gay marriage from its platform Saturday as state convention delegates instead focused on judging fellow Republicans on their worthiness to serve in office and adherence to GOP values. The platform, with few changes, was adopted overwhelmingly as the Las Vegas convention stretched late into the evening. The vote mirrors that of the Clark County GOP, which voted earlier to remove platform language defining marriage as between a man and a woman and statements opposing abortion. Many Republicans are re-evaluating their strong stances on conservative social issues as public

A Russian fighter jet made multiple, close-range passes near an American warship in the Black Sea for more than 90 minutes Saturday amid escalating tensions in the region, a U.S. military official said Monday. In the first public account of the incident, the official said the Russian Fencer flew within 1,000 yards of the USS Donald Cook, a Navy destroyer, at about 500 feet above sea level. Ship commanders considered the actions provocative and inconsistent with international agreements, prompting the ship to issue several radio queries and warnings. Some time back, whenever a big racial controversy erupted, I trained myself into the habit of reading about it at FoxNews.com, just for the unbelievable comment threads. Let’s put it this way: If my friends and I went out to a bar and started playing a “let’s write the racist FoxNews.com comment thread” drinking game, our efforts couldn’t begin to approach what I read there.I wasn’t alone. Liberal websites started feasting on these threads. And so, a couple of years ago, Ailes & Co. got wise. Stories about race were, at least in my disheartened experience, closed to comments.
