Has Katie Couric Lost Her Cred?
Daily Beast, by Anna Brand

Original Article

Posted By:Drive, 12/5/2013 3:57:53 PM

The current daytime star—and future face of Yahoo News—is taking flak for running an alarmist segment about an HPV vaccine on her talk show. Why Katie’s under fire. Can you trust Katie Couric? For a woman who has hosted news programs on three major television networks, received multiple awards for her reporting, and earned the title “America’s Sweetheart” back in her Today show glory, merely raising the question could be hugely damaging to her career—even more so now as she prepares to take on a high-profile role as the new global anchor of Yahoo News.

Katie had no cred to begin with. On the girly talkies she could come across as a commanding figure. Then she made the mistake of getting down in the trenches. People rolled their eyes. Nobody wanted a perky 50-year-old girl. People like girls to be 20ish or 30ish, and news maidens to be not perky but serious-seeming. Katie really did try her best to look grave, sincere and on task, but perky gravitas just never did catch on.

Obamacare exit strategy brings

I never wanted to be a pawn in President Obama’s absurd and irresponsible attempt to mandate, regulate and complicate the American health care system. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much of a choice. I was a casualty of Mr. Obama’s Big Lie. You know the one: “If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan.” By the time my plan vanished, the only individual health insurance plans available had been captured by the tentacles of Obamacare. Signing up for insurance under Obamacare was harder than making sense of Donald Trump’s hair. It took more than 20 attempts over

NEW YORK — Millions of passwords, credit card numbers and other personal information may be at risk as a result of a major breakdown in Internet security revealed earlier this week. The damage caused by the "Heartbleed" bug is currently unknown. The security hole exists on a vast number of the Internet´s Web servers and went undetected for more than two years. While it´s conceivable that the flaw was never discovered by hackers, it´s nearly impossible to tell. There isn´t much that people can do to protect themselves until the affected websites implement a fix. Here are answers to some common questions about

Last week Hillary Clinton gave what appeared at first to be a rambling and unfocused answer when asked to name the proudest achievement of her four years as Secretary of State. The short version is, she doesn´t have one. But Clinton´s words make a lot more sense when seen not as a non-answer to a specific question but as an effort to lay the foundation and establish a theme for a presidential campaign. The occasion was her appearance on a panel discussion at the "Women in the World" meeting in Manhattan. It was pretty easy going; the moderator, New York

WASHINGTON — Even when Sylvia Mathews Burwell was in her early 30s, friends speculated that she might return to her native Hinton, W.Va., and run for governor someday. After all, she had been a Rhodes scholar, and her mother — who later became mayor of Hinton, population 2,600 — had driven her daughter’s interest in politics. So far that has not happened, but plenty of other things under two presidents have. On Friday, President Obama is to nominate Ms. Burwell, currently director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, to take over one of the largest and most unwieldy

A new review is questioning the effectiveness of two key drugs enlisted in the fight against influenza and in turn the investments by governments to stockpile the drugs in the event of a global flu outbreak. The antiviral drugs Tamiflu (oseltamivir) and Relenza (zanamivir ) are commonly used to treat influenza in healthy adults and children. In the case of Tamiflu, the drug does shorten symptoms of influenza by about half a day - as the manufacturer suggests - but there is insufficient evidence to support claims that it reduces hospital admissions or serious complications, such as confirmed pneumonia or

Solar power has won the global argument. Photovoltaic energy is already so cheap that it competes with oil, diesel and liquefied natural gas in much of Asia without subsidies. Roughly 29pc of electricity capacity added in America last year came from solar, rising to 100pc even in Massachusetts and Vermont.[Snip] The technology is improving so fast--helped by the US military--that it has achieved a virtous circle.
