Does smoking pot cause man boobs?
CNN, by Dr. Anthony Youn

Original Article

Posted By:mitzi, 12/5/2013 8:39:24 AM

A young man in his 20s -- let´s call him George -- sits across from me in the exam room. "Dr. Youn," he says, "I have man boobs." I notice a not-so-unfamiliar smell wafting from his body. It´s the same odor that floated my way during a rock concert I recently attended. "How long have you had a problem with this, George?" "Hard to say. But it seems to have gotten worse over the past year or so." "George, the first thing you need to do is stop smoking pot. Marijuana could be causing your man boobs." Gynecomastia, otherwise known

The problem I have is that so many things have been claimed to reduce testicular size and testosterone level and they get big headlines. Many of the claims are obviously ridiculous. Others seem to make sense for a short while but then further studies show they´re wrong. I´m afraid that because of the enormous number of these claims I will have to not believe this until there are many more researchers with peer reviewed evidence that supports this contention.

Those people hunting for a reason to oppose marijuana will latch on to this to justify their position. The vaccines cause autism crowd still won´t let go even though the whole thing has been not only disproved but the initial study was shown to be a fake by a guy who was did it to enrich himself. And now the undeserved fear of vaccines is leading to new outbreaks of polio and other diseases that were almost cured world wide.

These kinds of news stories without balance are not healthy.

Dr. Youn sounds like a good doctor. And he is responsibile in that he raises the question with good backup, but goes on to say:

Few studies have examined a direct causative effect between smoking marijuana and gynecomastia. A report in 1972 made the initial connection between cannabis and gynecomastia. This study is contrasted with a 1977 survey of U.S. Army soldiers which showed no association between smoking marijuana and gynecomastia. This study was limited, however, due to its very small sample size.

But with the leglization of pot in many states, he believes that studies could be done in those states. And that the arguments that there is a connection between marijuana use and gynecomastia are plausible.

In the meantime he and his fellow plastic surgeons are telling the patients who have gynecomastia surgery to not use marijuana.

Well, I have seen results from various studies about pot over the years, and the main difference between tobacco and pot is that tobacco toxins build up in the lungs, whereas pot toxins build up in the fatty tissues of the body.

The study that I am really curious to see happen would involve a correlation between pot smokers and the incidents of breast cancer. That area tends to be a very fatty area of a woman´s body. Now that men are experiencing this issue, we may see a rise in male breast cancer too.

A rapid shift to wind and solar power is needed if the world is to avoid catastrophic global warming, the United Nations warns in a crucial report today. Some time back, whenever a big racial controversy erupted, I trained myself into the habit of reading about it at FoxNews.com, just for the unbelievable comment threads. Let’s put it this way: If my friends and I went out to a bar and started playing a “let’s write the racist FoxNews.com comment thread” drinking game, our efforts couldn’t begin to approach what I read there.I wasn’t alone. Liberal websites started feasting on these threads. And so, a couple of years ago, Ailes & Co. got wise. Stories about race were, at least in my disheartened experience, closed to comments.
