Associated Press, by Gary Fineout

The prosecutor overseeing the investigation of sexual assault allegations against Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston said Wednesday that it is completed. State Attorney Willie Meggs has scheduled a news conference at 2 p.m. Thursday in his office to announce his findings. Meggs said investigators have learned as much as they can about the December 2012 incident. "We think we have exhausted all investigative tools," he said. Winston has led the Seminoles to the No. 1 ranking, and they will play for a conference title Saturday, with a shot at the national crown. The quarterback also is the leading candidate for the

Jack Cashill has a great column comparing this case to the Duke lacrosse players case.

His DNA was on the accuser, and she claims to have been pressured to drop the case.

If he wins the Heisman, he won´t be the first person of questionable character to do so.

From a related article:

In a statement released two weeks ago, Carroll wrote that a TPD police officer told her that Tallahassee is a "big football town, and the victim needs to think long and hard before proceeding against [Winston] because she will be raked over the coals and her life will be made miserable."

Unreal.

Today is the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster in England. Ninety-six Liverpool fans died and more than 700 were injured in a human crush in the opening minutes of the 1989 FA Cup Semifinal at Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield. Inadequate turnstiles created a bottleneck and a crush of thousands of fans outside the ground on the Liverpool side. Police opened a gate, allowing the fans to enter. Standing room fans were kept in enclosed pens at some stadiums for security purposes. Police did not close the entrance to the already full central pens. Thousands streamed down the central tunnel,

A waitress who stopped to deposit her tips in an ATM in South Portland early Thursday morning wound up saving her bank more than $37,000 – minus the $100 she got back as a reward. The woman called police to report a suspicious man at TD Bank’s ATM on Maine Mall Road. What she didn’t know at the time was that the machine had malfunctioned and was spitting out cash as fast as the man could ask for it. Officers arrived around 5:30 a.m. and found him stuffing thousands of dollars from the machine into a plastic shopping bag, said

Cinderella never before received such a gift. Stephen F. Austin, a No. 12 seed and a popular pick to upset No. 5 Virginia Commonwealth, did just that Friday night, 77-75 in overtime. But how the Lumberjacks became the latest underdog to have its NCAA day is miraculous, instant-classic stuff. It didn´t really happen, did it? Except that it did. "Miracles do happen," said Brad Underwood, the first-year coach of Stephen F. Austin, the unheralded mid-major from Nacogdoches, Texas.

Republican David Jolly defeated Democrat Alex Sink and Libertarian Lucas Overby to capture the fiercely contested special election today for the U.S. District 13 Congressional race in Pinellas County. Jolly had 48.5 percent to win the seat and replace his former boss, C.W. Bill Young, who held it for 43 years until his death in October created the need for this special election. Sink, the former state Chief Financial Officer, got 47 percent of the vote, and Overby got 5 percent. A race that normally would play a minor role on the national stage, if any, became a media focal

Sunday’s announcement that Piers Morgan had lost his show at CNN was hardly unexpected. The ratings for the coveted 9 p.m. time slot were abysmal, dropping last week to just 270,000 viewers — about one-eighth of what Fox News’s Megyn Kelly got in the same time slot. Some, such as Variety magazine, have speculated that the low ratings are due to Morgan’s single-minded push for gun control. That might have something to do with it, but much more is going on. In all the thousands of television and radio interviews that I have done over the years, my appearances on Morgan’s

Since then, I have continued to study the facts and have drawn some conclusions. Here they are. First, it must be admitted that legally, Bundy doesn’t have a leg to stand on. The Bureau of Land Management has been charging him grazing fees since the early 1990s, which he has refused to pay. Further, BLM has issued orders limiting the area on which Bundy’s cows can

Casual marijuana use may come with some not-so-casual side effects. For the first time ever, researchers at Northwestern University have analyzed the relationship between casual use of marijuana and brain changes – and found that young adults who used cannabis just once or twice a week showed significant abnormalities in two important brain structures. The study’s findings, to be published Wednesday in the Journal of Neuroscience, are similar to those of past research linking chronic, long-term marijuana use with mental illness and changes in brain development. Dr. Hans Breiter, co-senior study author, said he was inspired to look at the effects of casual

People love that Scottish brogue so much, they don’t mind that he has it when he plays Juan Sánchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez, an immortal Spaniard in Highlander. Connery just has to show up on time. In economics you devalue a currency by printing too much of it. In film you

Toddlers show racial bias when picking playmates, a study reveals. They also take account of how fairly others behave. Researchers tested the reaction of white 15-month-olds as toys were distributed. Two white adults divided the toys, one equally and the other unequally. Seventy per cent of the toddlers chose to play with the researcher who distributed the toys fairly. But in a second test, when one researcher favoured a white recipient over an Asian one, they picked the ‘fair’ researcher less often, the journal Frontiers in Psychology reports. And the babies are more likely to help those who share the same ethnicity, which is known as
