Britain´s baby boomer generation is suffering the toll of decades of high-living, according to official figures which show alcohol-related hospital admissions among those in their 60s have tripled in a decade. The statistics show that among those aged 45 and above, the numbers admitted to hospital as a result of drinking have more than doubled in a decade. [Snip] The figures, from the Health and Social Care Information Centre, disclose a dramatic increase in liver disease and drunkenness among the middle aged over the last decade. Days after the killing of Drummer Lee Rigby this year, the Prime Minister established an Extremism Task Force to advise on how best to stop the spread of terrorist ideology. The recommendations contained in its report, published yesterday, were a mix of the familiar and the obvious, though none would appear to address the biggest problem of all--what to do about the hundreds of jihadists who have fought in Syria and who will be returning to the UK if they survive the conflict. The security agencies think that as many as 300 British passport holders have joined the array of

The Bomber Command Memorial in Green Park has beaten the likes of Big Ben and Buckingham Palace to the number one spot on the travel review site. Visitors from all over the world come to pay their respects to the 55,573 young Bomber Command crews who lost their lives during the Second World War.

A top lawyer at the Internal Revenue Service told congressmen quizzing him over the tea party targeting scandal ´I don´t recall´ a ´staggering 80 times in fill or partial response to the committees questions´, a letter revealed today. [Snip] The stinging letter from House Oversight Committee chair Rep. Darrell Issa and regulatory subcommittee chair Rep. Jim Jordan, read: ´Your memory consistently failed when you were asked about information you shared with the Treasury Department´, adding his testimony ´suggests either a deliberate attempt to obfuscate your involvement in this matter or gross incompetence on your part.´

America is facing a wave of strikes by its fast-food workers on Thursday a day after Barack Obama warned that inequality in the USA had soared to the point that it now posed "a fundamental threat to the American dream". Low-paid workers in McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken and other fast-food outlets in 100 cities across America were due to start rolling strikes to protest at the low level of America´s $7.25 (£4.45) federal minimum wage. The strikes are the latest part of a mushrooming publicity campaign for higher wages among those working so-called "McJobs", with fast-food restaurants seen as a

Mexican police have found a truck they suspect was stolen by common thieves while carrying a dangerous radioactive medical material that the United Nations said could provide an ingredient for a "dirty bomb". The truck was empty, but the radioactive material was found nearby, officials said. The truck was found on Wednesday close to where it was stolen outside Mexico City, said the official, who asked not to be identified in line with policy. The truck was stolen on Monday while it was taking cobalt-60 from a hospital in the northern city of Tijuana to a radioactive waste-storage centre, Mexican officials and the

The United Nations´ nuclear watchdog issued a warning on Wednesday after a truck carrying dangerous radioactive material that could be used in a dirty bomb was stolen in Mexico. The vehicle, carrying cobalt-60, a substance used for radiotherapy treatment to combat cancer, was stolen on Monday while transporting the load from a hospital in Tijuana to a radioactive waste storage centre. Mexican authorities were working to locate the material, which could not be used in a conventional nuclear weapon but could in theory be put in a dirty bomb--an explosive device which would spread the substance over a large area.

President Obama´s uncle has testified at his deportation hearing that he housed his famous relative for a few weeks when he was student at Harvard Law School. This statement contradicts earlier claims by the White House, which says that Barack Obama has never met his controversial uncle Onyango Obama. The 69-year-old half-brother of the president´s late father will be allowed to remain in the United States after a hearing at a Massachusetts Immigration Court on Tuesday afternoon. Google has been playing both sides of Washington´s streets by making contributions to conservative political groups that have left-wingers seeing red, it emerged today. But the company is largely just looking out for itself. The tech giant´s grantees include Heritage Action for America, a tea party-oriented organization that some pundits regard as the main catalyst for October´s partial government shutdown. Another is Americans for Tax Reform, led by conservative anti-tax crusader--and liberal nemesis--Grover Norquist. The left-wing Center for Media and Democracy claims that although Google is ´supposedly guided by its "don´t be evil" motto,´ the normally reliably left-wing company has

President Obama will cast growing income inequality and a decline in economic mobility as a “fundamental threat to the American dream” during a speech Wednesday in Washington. The speech will serve as an early preview for next year’s State of the Union address, according to a White House official, who said Obama would focus much of his energy over the next three years on the issue. “The decisions we make over the next few years will determine whether or not our children will grow up in an America where, if you work hard, you can get ahead,” the official said.

During a presentation at the White House in which President Barack Obama touted the benefits of the Affordable Care Act, the president declared that his signature health care reform law was not going to be repealed. This assertion led his administration members, his staff, and audience members to rise from their seats and give the president a standing ovation. Obama said that ACA opponents’ alternative to the health care reform law is to champion repeal and going back to the health care delivery system status quo ante. He specifically cited Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) who he said was asked directly for

Nineteen people stood behind President Obama on stage in the Executive Office Building Tuesday as the president kicked off a new campaign to promote Obamacare. One of those people, a young Florida woman named Monica Weeks, introduced Obama after telling the story of being struck with Crohn´s Disease at age 19 and receiving expensive treatments for several years that were covered by her parents´ health care plan — because Obamacare allowed her to remain on that plan until age 26. MSNBC has announced that Chris Matthews, Barack Obama´s most excitable fan, will be interviewing the President on Thursday´s Hardball. Fawning over the liberal politician is incredibly common among journalists, but Matthews has taken it to a whole new level. According to the network host, Obama is a "perfect," "cool," brilliant figure who is comparable to Jesus, Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy. The verbose Matthews has no filter when it comes to the Democrat, even once bizarrely blurting out that an Obama speech made him "forget" that the commander in chief "was black." Continued global warming poses a risk of rapid, drastic changes in some human and natural systems, a scientific panel warned Tuesday, citing the possible collapse of polar sea ice, the potential for a mass extinction of plant and animal life and the threat of immense dead zones in the ocean. At the same time, some worst-case fears about climate change that have entered the popular imagination can be ruled out as unlikely, at least over the next century, the panel found. These include a sudden belch of methane from the ocean or the Arctic that would fry the planet, as

Nobody could accuse the press of ignoring the fiasco-on-a-server that is HealthCare.gov. The Obamacare website’s woes are dominating coverage on the network news, the cable talk shows, the blogs and, of course, high-octane websites like POLITICO. But did the press do a good job of covering the Affordable Care Act before the health care exchanges went online—sort of—on Oct. 1? Were we adequately warned of the troubles that were to come? And now that HealthCare.gov’s problems are headline news, is the coverage of it any better? Sure, one can find a few examples of one news outlet or another warning of impending
