U.S. students lag around average

Washington Post, by Lyndsey Layton

Scores in math, reading and science posted by 15-year-olds in the United States were flat while their counterparts elsewhere — particularly in Shanghai, Singapore and other Asian provinces or countries — soared ahead, according to results of a well-regarded international exam released Tuesday. While U.S. teenagers scored slightly above average in reading, their scores were average in science and below average in math, compared to 64 other countries and economies that participated in the 2012 Program for International Student Assessment, or PISA, which was administered last fall. That pattern has not changed much since PISA was first administered in 2000. “Our

I have read several studies that indicated that if minorities were removed from the equation the U.S. students would be ranked at or near the top. Hey, it´s simply what I have read.

Thank you, #2. You are absolutely right. In fact, if I remember correctly, AMERICAN Asian students blow away SHANGHAI Asian students in the test scores. Furthermore, American Universities are filled with students from ... wait for it ... Shanghai, NOT the other way around.

As MC Hammer would say: "Break it down!"

All Asian HS students excel in the PISA Mathematics/Science component for many reasons; chief among them is their ability to reason abstractly. This is the same attribute that allowed the Greeks to create Geometry, Logic and Physics, among other disciplines. BTW, there are 24,000,000 Chinese in Shanghai and 172,000 Chinese in San Francisco, a ratio of 1 to.0072. To imply that our students are on a par w/Asians in general and the Chinese in particular, however the test data is configured, is the ultimate triumph of delusional fantasy over hard reality.

What a crock. No other country educates all comers like America does--and tests them all. Most countries track students and only those with the aptitude for it are moved into the schools that participate in this test.

When they decide to compare apple to apples, ask me to care. Until then, "so what?"

"The Tonight Show" host Jimmy Fallon walked into Lake Michigan Sunday morning in the promised suit and tie, turned toward the beach, then fall back into the water, going completely under. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel ran in, then sort of laid down on his back in the slushy, 32-degree water about 10 feet from the edge of the sand on North Avenue Beach. Speaking to the crowd just before going in, Fallon didn´t exactly radiate bravado. "If you hear a scream like a little girl´s, just know that Jimmy Fallon is swimming in Lake Michigan," he said. WASHINGTON — President Obama has warned Russia that “there will be costs” for a military intervention in Ukraine. But the United States has few palatable options for imposing such costs, and recent history has shown that when it considers its interests at stake, Russia has been willing to pay the price. Even before President Vladimir V. Putin on Saturday publicly declared his intent to send Russian troops into the Ukrainian territory of Crimea, Mr. Obama and his team were already discussing how to respond. They talked about canceling the president’s trip to a summit meeting in Russia in June, shelving

Liberal Democrats who are not facing tough re-elections this year say it’s the right thing to do, but vulnerable incumbents are steering clear of the proposal. Political experts say barring ex-felons from voting impacts African Americans disproportionately. Sen. Mr. Obama and his fellow Democrats are pushing an income-equality agenda that includes a hike in the nation’s minimum wage and more federal investment into manufacturing, infrastructure, education, and other areas. The GOP, on the other hand, continues to zero in on the president’s health-care reform law and its negative consequences, a tack the party is sure to continue heading toward the November contests. Baghdad -More than 700 people died in violence in Iraq in February, not including nearly 300 reported deaths in western Anbar province, where security forces have been battling Sunni Muslim rebels since January, the United Nations said on Saturday. The world body said local authorities had recorded 298 civilian deaths in Anbar, but that it could not confirm the figures independently due to the chaos in the desert region. Outside Anbar, the bloodshed was worst in Baghdad, where 239 civilians were killed, followed by Salahuddin province to the north with 121 dead. A total of 1,381 people were wounded.

President Barack Obama fired a few verbs across the front armor of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s tanks, in a rushed statement just after 5 p.m. on Friday. The statement was made as Russian forces — including attack helicopters — appeared in peripheral parts of the Ukraine that are largely populated by ethnic Russians. There’s no evidence that Obama wants to get involved in what may become a war between the Ukraine and Russia. He did not threaten any significant retaliation if Russian force attack nor did he offer military aid to the Ukraine. He announced that Vice President Joe Biden — but not

President Obama´s proclaimed strategy to "bypass Congress" — most conspicuously his broad rewriting of the Affordable Care Act — has given unusual prominence to a fairly arcane legal doctrine: standing. Standing is what is preventing a potential blizzard of litigation against the president´s unilateral decrees, and ironically, it´s a doctrine liberal jurists have long decried. To challenge the government in federal court, it isn´t enough to simply believe that the government´s conduct is illegal or even unconstitutional. Federal courts can hear only specific disputes about the law as applied to particular people. To be heard in court, a person must have

Security Council spent the day trying to fashion a response to the rapid escalation of the Ukraine crisis after Russian troops took up positions throughout the autonomous republic of Crimea. Obama expressed “deep concern,” the White House said, and called on Russia to withdraw its forces back to its bases in Crimea and “to refrain from any interference elsewhere in Ukraine.” Putin appeared to have given little ground, according to a readout of the conversation from his office.
