Arne Duncan: ‘White suburban moms’
upset that Common Core shows their
kids aren’t ‘brilliant’

Washington Post, by Valerie Strauss

U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan told a group of state schools superintendents Friday that he found it “fascinating” that some of the opposition to the Common Core State Standards has come from “white suburban moms who — all of a sudden — their child isn’t as brilliant as they thought they were and their school isn’t quite as good as they thought they were.” Yes, he really said that. But he has said similar things before. What, exactly, is he talking about? In his cheerleading for the controversial Common Core State Standards — which were approved by 45 states and the

And Arne´s reputed to be one of the more reasonable regime Lefties.
Somehow Lefties just can´t seem to serve up a point without putting a big dollop of insulting and off-putting snark on it. Obnoxious, and if the truth be known, really passive-aggressive wimps, the lot of them!

Sounds like Arne Boi has a little jealousy going on there himself. Sounds like a comment like that would only come from someone pushing a Leftist, Marxist-Communist agenda.
So Arne, if Common Core is so wonderful, maybe everyone should dress the same too. How about a nice Mao Suit for everyone as well? After all, you wouldn´t want inner city kids to be jealous of what all those "White suburban moms" are giving their kids now would you?
They probably have budgeted for tunics in a nice shade of red with Obamao rainbow patches on them...

Interesting that Barry Obama has never entrusted his children´s education to Duncan. In Chicago, where Duncan was School Superintendent at the time, the Obama children went to an elite private school. In DC, Obama placed his two kids in the elite prep school, Sidwell Friends. Both private schools have little to no involvement with Duncan. As with ObamaCare, only us "folks" have to suffer at the hands of political hacks like Duncan, Sibelius, Kerry and other leftists.

Once again, an emotional argument from the "smartest people in the room", who also happen to be Marxist communists.

When Arne Duncan mentions "developmental" he really means the expanded and continuing "dumbing down" of standards. Not teaching basic addition and subtraction until 2nd and 3rd grade is not preparing students for a global competitive market.

These people in this far Left radical regime have no intellectual argument for Common Core, and they whine far too much to be taken seriously.

Isn´t it true that almost all of Chicago´s murderous gang-bangers have had at least six years of training under the "educational" regime put in place by Arne Duncan?

"Values" are apparently being taught!

If the states "bend over" for Common Wh*re standards, they make an added layer of servitude to federal bullying.

That will necessarily interfere with the schools´ flexibility and parental accountability that are truly needed.

FTA: "More recently, tea party members have accused the administration of a federal takeover of public education, extreme right-wing rhetoric that clouds a real discussion about the Core."

No editorializing there! In WaPo World, centralized power and planning are common sense approaches, and nothing is ever described as "extreme left-wing."

The rollout of Arne Duncan´s Common Core State Standards (whose intent is to "fundamentally transform" our school systems) reads as badly handled as the rollout of ObamaCare. You get the impression that everything is "whatever?" with these guys; it´s "mission accomplished" if the boot is placed firmly on someone´s neck - after that, who cares if the program fails? Think Solyndra, et al.

When George W. Bush signed No Child Left Behind (which was just a standardized testing regime) the Liberal Education Mafia screamed to high heaven that they would have to start "teaching to the tests" instead of "educating" the kids.

Now, with Kommie Kore
"...it became clear that the Core implementation was being rushed, and some students were being given tests said to be Core-aligned even though teachers hadn’t had enough time to create material around the standards. That’s why Duncan announced in June that he was giving the 37 states plus the District of Columbia, which had won federal waivers from the most egregious mandates of the No Child Left Behind Act, an extra year to implement teacher evaluations linked to new assessments that are supposed to be aligned to the new Common Core State Standards."

"egregious mandates?" Were White Suburban Moms the ones screaming about those egregious mandates? No, it was substandard teachers in substandard schools who were doing the screaming.

This is where the North East elites want to rule over the rest of the country. Common Core is trying to teach kids for community college.

The left and big government republics like Bill Bennett never see any thing wrong with this. The idea that the states or local communities might know better is absurd to
them.

Common Core was mentioned in a link (Wealth of Words in City Journal) from another post:

http://www.lucianne.com/thread/?artnum=761182

Two statements from the Common Core standards:

"By reading texts in history/social studies, science, and other disciplines, students build a foundation of knowledge in these fields that will also give them the background to be better readers in all content areas. Students can only gain this foundation when the curriculum is intentionally and coherently structured to develop rich content knowledge within and across grades.”

“The Common Core Standards do not—indeed, cannot—enumerate all or even most of the content that students should learn. The Standards must therefore be complemented by a well-developed, content-rich curriculum.”

Sounds like a stepin the right direcction to me.

Does anyone else think Bill Ayers is behind Common Core? I can´t believe he did not play a major role in this, but is letting everyone else take the credit/blame. It is a liberal dream come true, and our governors simply saw dollar signs coming from DC, and didn´t care what the curriculum entailed.

And "White Suburban Moms" is racist, sexist and so insulting - these women are supermoms for the most part, and don´t need to be preached to by a paper-pushing, incompetent bureaucrat. War on women, anyone?

Home truth is real simple. When input(what we spend per student)is measured against output( test results in Mathematics, Reading Comp and Science); our High School results are beyond embarrassing and a national disgrace. But obviously many would rather shoot the messenger. No matter. Markets work. So our jobs of the future will be taken by Asians and Central Europeans who have not only the requisite skill set but also the attitude and behavior necessary for success.

I don´t know about "white suburban moms" opposing common core. Much of the opposition I´ve read emanates from teachers and their unions. It seems that successful teaching of children isn´t something that can be measured or used to evaluate teacher competence. The real problem, according to the teachers, is that we´re not spending enough money on education.

President Obama on Friday said that Republicans were behind the biggest threat to voting rights in decades. “The principle of one person, one vote is the single greatest tool we have to redress an unjust status quo. President Reagan was holding a meeting in the Cabinet Room on March 25, 1985, when Press Secretary Larry Speakes came over to me, as communications director, with a concern. Speakes thought the president´s statement, "This violence was unjustified," was weak. I agreed. We interrupted the president, who reread the statement, then said go ahead with it. The Obamas made a total of $59,251 in charitable contributions in 2013 — 12.3 percent of their income — but most of the donations went to primarily secular organizations. From their adjusted gross income of $481,098, the president and first lady gave $1,500 to St. John’s Church, an Episcopalian parish near the White House where they occasionally attend services. That´s an effective tax rate of 20.4 percent. • The Obamas are due a tax refund of $19,108. "She is not welcome here in San Diego by so many of us. We don´t want her here," said Jan Iverson, a local mother and protestor. (Snip) Clinton´s office says she changed plans because of

Barack Obama got quite the handful on Thursday, April 10, but it was all for a good cause! As the President of the United States was boarding Air Force One with his wife Michelle Obama, a gust of wind blew up her skirt. Barack quickly stepped in and grabbed the First Lady´s billowing skirt to help her avoid a wardrobe malfunction and embarrassing Marilyn Monroe moment. Earlier in the week, another famous lady on the global stage suffered a similar snafu, but no one was around to help her -- not even her prince!

A new review is questioning the effectiveness of two key drugs enlisted in the fight against influenza and in turn the investments by governments to stockpile the drugs in the event of a global flu outbreak. The antiviral drugs Tamiflu (oseltamivir) and Relenza (zanamivir ) are commonly used to treat influenza in healthy adults and children. In the case of Tamiflu, the drug does shorten symptoms of influenza by about half a day - as the manufacturer suggests - but there is insufficient evidence to support claims that it reduces hospital admissions or serious complications, such as confirmed pneumonia or

Big Government: As students flood Twitter with images of inedible slop, it´s clear that Michelle Obama´s government school lunch revamp is a costly failure. It´s time to get the feds out of kids´ lunch boxes. The $12 billion federal student lunch program, which serves 30.7 million kids, is losing participants fast — more than a million just last year, according to a recent Government Accountability Office report. The reason: the first lady´s Healthy Hunger-free Kids Act, an act that has accomplished exactly the opposite of what it claimed it would — leaving hungry, angry, disgusted kids and dumpsters full of wasted

Recently elected Democratic Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe is warning that global warming could raise sea levels high enough to flood the Hampton Roads region, home to the world´s largest naval base, without immediate and “smart decisions.” Addressing an environmental summit this week at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va., McAuliffe embraced climate change, blamed humans for causing it, and said action is needed now to protect Virginia´s coast from rising ocean levels that will result from global warming. “The first big decision of course is to accept that climate change is real,” he told the group. “I happen to believe in

Solar power has won the global argument. Photovoltaic energy is already so cheap that it competes with oil, diesel and liquefied natural gas in much of Asia without subsidies. Roughly 29pc of electricity capacity added in America last year came from solar, rising to 100pc even in Massachusetts and Vermont.[Snip] The technology is improving so fast--helped by the US military--that it has achieved a virtous circle. Michael Parker and Flora Chang, at Sanford Bernstein, say we entering a new order of "global energy deflation" that must ineluctably erode the viability of oil, gas and the fossil fuel nexus over time.

Nearly a year into the IRS scandal, we still don´t know exactly what happened—though we are finally getting an inkling. That´s thanks to the letter House Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp sent this week to the Justice Department recommending a criminal probe of Lois Lerner. The average citizen might be dizzied by the torrent of confusing terms—BOLO lists, Tigta, 501(c)(4)—and the array of accusations that have made up this IRS investigation. Mr. Camp´s letter takes a step back to remind us why this matters, even as it provides compelling new information that goes to motive and method—and clarifies some of

The deportation of foreigners living illegally in the United States is similar to the forced internment of ethnic-Japanese Americans in World War II, according to Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi. “I’ll be very honest with you: Looking at the numbers at some point, in terms of how people are treated and deported and families separated and the rest, this has a scent of Japanese internment,” Pelosi told a Politico reporter. “It’s really a black mark,” said Pelosi. Roughly 110,000 ethnic-Japanese immigrants and their American children were detained during World War II after Japan’s sneak attack on Americans in Pearl Harbor. Pelosi also urged Obama
