Venezuela Becomes A Nation Of Looters
Investor´s Business Daily, by Editorial

Original Article

Looters: Venezuelan troops storm a local electronics retailer in the name of enforcing "fair prices," brazenly blaming the private sector for state policies. Sounds familiar — and not just because it´s a communist takeover. With municipal elections just around the corner on Dec. 8, it´s no surprise to see Venezuela´s failing socialist government turning to pork-barrel handouts to lure voters — as it always has. Shovel the goodies to the red-shirted low-information voters and gain just enough votes in upcoming elections to claim a dictatorship is really a democracy. Not coincidentally, President Nicolas Maduro declared that Venezuela would celebrate the beginning of Christmas

Oh, I don´t worry so much about the looters... that is a small percentage, population wise.

You gotta be relatively smart and powerful to be a looter.

It is the moochers that really destroy a functioning economy. there is a thousand of them for every looter.

Remember when Stephanie Seymour raised more than a few eyebrows and set off one or two incest alarms when she sort of made out with her son Peter Jr. on the beach in 2011? Well, Harper’s Bazaar ran with that very-intimate-bordering-on-sexual familial energy for a mother/son shoot in its latest issue. So, you know, everyone looks great. But the sexy black dresses, the hand placement, the S&M undercurrent, Stephanie Seymour clutching a butcher’s knife while her baby bears curl around her long gams? Ahh, cringe, uncomfortable, can’t look. (Although, a Brant using an eyelash curler? Great shot.) The whole thing

Tax And Spend: Puerto Rico´s debt has been cut to junk by two credit rating agencies, prompting an outcry from officials of the recession-hit island that, after all, they´ve hiked taxes. Well, that´s the problem right there. It´s hard to not feel some sympathy for Puerto Rico´s new governor, Alejandro Garcia Padilla, who upon entering office last year inherited a hog-wallow of $70 billion in debt, according to a long piece in the weekend´s New York Times. The governor cut spending by 2%, balanced his budget a year ahead of schedule, reformed public pensions and reduced the territory´s deficit by 70%. It wasn´t

Mexican vigilante groups have paraded through a stronghold of the Knights Templar drug cartel in the troubled state of Michoacan. The vigilantes had driven into Apatzingan on Saturday, backed by armoured vehicles and troops. On Sunday, they drove round the town shouting slogans before convening at the city´s main square. The groups began an offensive last month aimed at ending the drug gang´s activities in Michoacan. The government recently reached a pact with the groups, granting them temporary legal status by redefining them as Rural Defence Corps. The Knights Templar cartel controls much of the drug trafficking in the area, carrying out killings and kidnappings

The Left: Grocer Trader Joe´s has pulled out of a planned expansion to a poor area in Portland, Ore., after a community organizing group objected. The organizers can now take a bow for the neighborhood´s loss. Hectoring the private chain with racially tinged language, wealthy poverty-racketeers from a foundation-funded group called the Portland African American Leadership Forum claimed that a $2.4 million store on a vacant lot in a run-down part of northeast Portland would gentrify the area, driving up retail prices and driving out the local black community. "We will expropriate whatever needs to be expropriated," Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro cautioned in reference to the new Law of Costs and Fair Prices. Concomitantly, the president urged private companies to comply with the new law. His statements came during the commemoration of the coup attempt of February 4, 1992. The Venezuelan president threatened to take "the most radical measures to protect our people´s economy." "I make an appeal to the country economic sectors, for work and self-regulation of commodities and prices. You have time until next Monday; otherwise, I will take the most radical measures," Maduro specified.

Not only Nicolás Maduro has inherited the presidential chair, but has he the heavy economic legacy from Hugo Chávez. With two devaluations of the bolivar currency this year and a third looming in the horizon, the battered economy of Venezuela is starting to put the president of the Republic against the wall. It has all been as if hunger and an urge to eat had had become accomplices to create this situation. By forcing businesses to lower their prices, without a criterion of rationality and in a gesture of obscene demagogy, the Government recently gave the country’s commercial establishments a surprise

Argentina´s Luck Is Finally Running Out

Argentina’s luck is finally starting to run out. It devalued its currency by 15 percent last week, marking the beginning of a possible economic crisis of the kind Argentina has become known for. Argentina’s problem is that it has followed the logic of populism for more than a decade and President Cristina Kirchner is showing no interest in changing course. In the 1990s Argentina combined far-reaching but sometimes flawed market-reforms with irresponsible fiscal policies, culminating in its 2002 default on $81 billion in debt—the largest sovereign default in history. The country delinked its currency from the dollar, experienced a severe economic

Try an anti-school choice union and a big bureaucracy. It actually happened at Uintah Elementary School in the Salt Lake City school district. The story from the embattled school administrators is that a "child nutrition manager" sought to correct the arrears of parents´ payments to their subsidized lunch program ($2.50 a day) and, after giving a day´s notice, had food service workers yank the trays of served food right out of the children´s little

It was the perfect Christmas tableau at the Allen-Farrow household: There sat Mia and nine of her children around the dinner table. There were two turkeys, an abundance of side dishes, and in the middle, a carved angel. Long before the scandals — Woody taking off with Mia’s adopted teen daughter Soon-Yi, Mia accusing Woody of molesting their 7-year-old daughter, Dylan — the Allen-Farrow family was regarded as the ultimate cosmopolitan clan, a multiracial brood of 11 children,

BAGHDAD — A group of Sunni militants attending a suicide bombing training class at a camp north of Baghdad were killed on Monday when their commander unwittingly conducted a demonstration with a belt that was packed with explosives, army and police officials said. The militants belonged to a group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, which is fighting the Shiite-dominated army of the Iraqi government, mostly in Anbar Province. But they are also linked to bomb attacks elsewhere and other fighting that has thrown Iraq deeper into sectarian violence.

President Obama has broken many promises. One that he has not broken is his boast that he would "fundamentally transform America." He and his fellow Democrats are on the verge of doing just that by turning us into a nation of loafers. A loafer is an idle person who lives off others. Barack Obama seemingly has no problem with such people. He might even relate to them. He does have a serious problem with his own work ethic, and finds work boring. Powerful winds in the Pacific Ocean, which have driven surface heat deep underwater, could be the reason behind the current ‘pause’ in global warming. This is according to a joint Australian and U.S. study which has looked at why there has been a slowdown in the planet’s global average surface temperature over the past decade. Their research shows that trade winds in central and eastern parts of the Pacific have caused warm surface water to sink to the ocean´s depths, reducing the amount of heat in the atmosphere. Last year, scientists on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said the pace of

From its inception, the strategy behind the Obama administration’s implementation of ObamaCare has been simple: to frontload the benefits and postpone the pain and costs of this massive government intrusion into the private sector for as long as possible. This deceitful approach enabled President Obama run for reelection in 2012 on the spurious promise of extending insurance coverage to the poor and those with pre-existing conditions without being held accountable for the problems with the law that would only become apparent in his second term.
