On Flanders fields we will remember
Daily Express [UK], by Tina Ediss

The shelter has a dirt floor, the walls and roof are constructed from curved corrugated iron, and inside is completely bare. It´s small, maybe 4ft by 6ft, and not tall enough to stand up in but after spending a short time in the trenches, exposed to the wind and rain, this tiny refuge feels like the height of luxury. The simple structure, a place where the soldiers could retreat in their quiet moments, is part of the new outdoor Trench Experience at the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917, in Zonnebeke, near Ypres, in Belgium.[Snip] During that time about 500,000 soldiers lost

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

In their quiet moments some artistically inclined soldiers spent time converting artillery shells into cups, plates, pitchers and so forth.

Over the years I´ve managed to pick up quite a collection of these swords turned into ploughshears at a nearby charity store. Great Grandfather will pass on and the family is at a loss to explain why he has this strange sort of tableware so they ´donate it´.

I´ve got such things from WWI battlefields, the Eastern Front, Korean War, Viet Nam ~ and other events. Not all of it was made by soldiers ~ local people did this as well.

I look at that stuff and see the man behind it pushing away the terror and horror of the war if only for an hour.

In the great overall picture of all this, we have been dumbing down our society by simply killing it off. Every time we do "War", we kill off our brightest and best thinkers. Our Civil War, the problems in late 19th century Europe, WW1, WW2, Korea, Nam and so on. We all remember those we lost. They were bright and the hope for our future. We will eventually reach a point where we are so collectively stupid that we won´t have enough sense to start a war, let alone figure out how to efficiently kill off so many people. Then maybe there will be peace in the world. Sure will be exciting.

Ordering men to run into massive artillery and machine gun fire. Insanity!

You would think that after the first 100,000 people killed they would notice their tactics ain´t working.

What is Vladimir Putin’s game? The recent unrest in eastern Ukraine has been presented by the Kremlin as an autonomous phenomenon, an upsurge of patriotic feeling among embattled ethnic Russians who long for the protection of the Motherland against what they see as a neo-nationalist regime in Kiev. It may be true that the initial impulse came from locals acting without Russia’s direct involvement. But it is becoming clear that, just as in Crimea, many of the “separatists” are not just taking their orders from Moscow, but are very probably Russian troops in paper-thin disguise. The key difference is that,

Ireland, once a rock-solid Christian country, has now become so intolerant of Christian beliefs that its leading opponent of gay marriage may be forced to leave the country because of fears for his personal safety. After repeated threats and obscene verbal attacks, John Waters, a nationally-known newspaper columnist, author and broadcaster who supports Christian family traditions, says he is now unable to go into the centre of Dublin at night because he fears for his own safety. The attacks began after Waters threatened the state-owned broadcaster RTE with legal action after a drag queen called ‘Panti Bliss’ appeared on a television programme

Those killings, however, are only a fragment of the total harm caused by the misuse of firearms. Each year, more than 30,000 people die in the United States in firearm-related incidents. Many of those deaths involve handguns. The adoption of rules that will lessen the number of those incidents should be a matter of primary concern to both federal and state legislators.
