Excerpts From a New Johnny Cash
Biography Capture His Iconoclastic Genius

Daily Beast, by Robert Hillburn

Robert Hilburn’s vivid new biography, Johnny Cash: The Life, thoroughly examines all aspects of the performer’s life, from his start in the Arkansas cotton fields to his late-life renaissance working with producer Rick Rubin. (Snip)1956 Gladewater and Longview would be just two more names on the list of the hundreds of towns in which Cash performed over five decades—except that he most likely wrote “I Walk the Line” in one of the two neighboring East Texas locales. Cash usually said Gladewater; Marshall Grant [Cash’s bass player] always claimed it was Longview. There was even sharp disagreement over the distinctive hum at

He also performed at the former "Buck Lake Ranch" at Angola, Indiana in the 50s. We saw him there along with a number of known singers and a number of newcomers including at that time Johnny Cash.

Don’t Remember Barbara

Barbara Walters is a broadcasting doyenne, interviewer of greats, shatterer of glass ceilings. But the daily screechfest of The View is not the best vehicle for her with which to say goodbye. The audience was still cheering reverently for Barbara Walters on Tuesday’s edition of The View, the day after her announcement that May 16 would mark her final day presenting the ABC morning show. Her hair its usual whipped and spun golden halo, Walters came out of the wings, gingerly high-fived some folk in the audience, before her fellow host Whoopi Goldberg reminded us of her momentous imminent farewell

GOP lawmakers believe over

Republicans are demanding greater transparency on how much the administration spent to promote and implement Obamacare — and hitting back at President Obama´s claim that he “didn´t make a hard sell.” The new effort comes after Obama´s claim that the administration met its goal of enrolling more than 7 million people without spending billions. “We didn´t make a hard sell,” Obama said. “We didn´t have billions of dollars to spend on commercials like our critics did.” But both Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill estimate the administration has spent roughly $4 to 5 billion to get the Affordable Care Act running, including hundreds

Despite the Obama administration´s insistence that everyone -- the government, insurance companies, doctors, medical providers, and consumers -- will reap benefits from Obamacare, a recent grant proposal by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) suggests that the agency does have concerns about the ongoing financial viability of one player in the health care market: so-called family planning centers. HHS intends to spend up to $800,000 to fund studies to "conduct data analysis and related research and evaluation on the impact of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on Title X funded family planning centers." At least part of the concern

Of all the cheap thrills that life affords, self-righteousness is one of the grossest: A moment on the lips, forever on the hips, with a moral weight for which the only relief is repentance. Since 1941, comic book fans have followed the exploits of teenaged Archie Andrews and his friends. This July, they´ll find out how he dies. "Life With Archie" #36 hits stores on July 16, and CNN can reveal exclusively that it tells the story of how Archie sacrifices himself to save a friend. Few details are known, but it seems fitting that Archie would go out a hero. The 37th issue one week later will end the series. The "Life With Archie" series has been telling the stories of possible future Archie scenarios for the past few years, and so Archie will continue to

When friends and family members gathered recently at the White House for a private celebration of Michelle Obama’s 50th birthday, one of the invited partygoers was a former paid FBI Mafia informant. That same man attended February’s state dinner in honor of French President Francois Hollande. He was seated with his girlfriend at a table adjacent to President Barack Obama, who is likely unaware that, according to federal agents, his guest once interacted with members of four of New York City’s five organized crime families. LONDON - Peaches Geldof, the wild-child second daughter of concert organizer Bob Geldof who worked as a model, a television presenter and a fashion writer and filled the pages of British tabloids with her late-night antics, has died at age 25. There was no immediate word on the cause of her death at her home in Wrotham, Kent, southeast England. Her father said in a statement Monday: "Peaches has died. We are beyond pain." "She was the wildest, funniest, cleverest, wittiest and the most bonkers of all of us," he said. "Writing 'was' destroys me afresh. What a beautiful child. How is this possible that we will not see her again? How is that bearable? We loved her and will cherish her forever."

A caveat right off the bat: RAND’s estimate only runs through March 28 whereas the actual deadline for signing up was March 31st. Given the crush of traffic on Healthcare.gov in late March, many more people could have signed up over those last three days than were captured by these numbers. On the other hand, the White House was claiming six million sign-ups as of March 27. There’s no way to reconcile that with RAND’s data. One of them is wrong. Maybe both, in fact. There’s a big spike in Medicaid, just as everyone expected. There’s a less big but
