NHS hospitals to be banned from fitting
metal-on-metal hip replacements
after high failure rate

Telegraph [UK], by Laura Donnelly*

NHS hospitals are to be banned from fitting most metal-on-metal hip replacements after a study found unacceptably high failure rates among implants in 17,000 patients. The devices have already been subject to safety alerts, amid fears they can leak toxic metal. Surgeons are concerned that they fail far too early as joints wear away. Two common models have been taken off the market and thousands of patients fitted with the implants have been told to have annual checks, often including blood tests. New draft guides drawn up by regulators say the NHS should stop using any hip implant with a failure

Ukraine crisis: Putin adviser
accuses US of meddling
BBC News [UK], by Staff    Original Article

A senior adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused the US of meddling in Ukraine, in breach of a 1994 agreement over non-intervention. Sergei Glazyev said the US was spending $20m (£12.3m; 14.8m euros) a week on Ukrainian opposition groups, supplying "rebels" with arms among other things. (Snip) Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych is due to meet Mr Putin on Friday in Sochi, on the opening day of the Winter Olympic Games there. He held talks in Kiev with US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland on Thursday, at which he said he favoured dialogue and compromise with the opposition.

When, during the early phase of Syria´s brutal civil war, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned the West against undertaking military intervention in Syria, his arguments were dismissed as nothing more than a blatant attempt to save the Assad regime, Moscow´s long-standing regional ally. But now that, on the eve of tomorrow´s opening ceremony at the Sochi Olympics, American intelligence agencies are warning that terror cells are planning to blow up airliners bound for the Olympics with explosives hidden in toothpaste, the Russian president´s warnings do not look so far-fetched after all. Moscow´s long-running battle with Islamist dissident groups in places

Well, fancy that. GPs revolt on patient records:

Growing numbers of GPs are joining a rebellion against an NHS scheme to harvest millions of medical records. Unless patients object, officials will start to extract confidential data from their files next month. The information will be used to improve care and assist research work, health chiefs say. But some family doctors fear the data will be misused by insurers and businesses. At least four GPs--with thousands of patients between them--are defying orders to hand over their patients’ records. Many more are known to share their concerns. [Snip] In an article in today’s Mail, he compares these ‘bullying’ tactics to those used

One of the most unfortunate pieces of White House spinning over the Iran nuclear negotiations is that those who supported new sanctions legislation – including several Democrat senators--were effectively "voting for war". They weren´t. What they were voting for was an alternative way of dealing with Iran. A more results-driven and fact-based approach, that clashes with several of the premises that underpin the current Kerry-Obama approach to the negotiations. The new Senate sanctions bill (now successfully stalled, it seems) didn´t call for new sanctions straight away. What it did was seek to put a hard floor under the negotiations process:

The Congressional Budget Office estimated on Tuesday that the Affordable Care Act will reduce the number of full-time workers by 2.5 million over the next decade. That is mostly a good thing, a liberating result of the law. Of course, Republicans immediately tried to brand the findings as “devastating” and stark evidence of President Obama’s health care reform as a failure and a job killer. It is no such thing. (SNIP) The new law will free people, young and old, to pursue careers or retirement without having to worry about health coverage.

The Affordable Care Act, aka ObamaCare, became law almost four years ago. It became operational last Oct. 1. Yesterday, Feb. 4, 2014, the ACA may well have been dealt its death blow. The Congressional Budget Office released a major study of the government’s budget and its effect on the overall economy over the next 10 years. In dull bureaucratic language, it delivers a devastating analysis of the inefficiencies, ineffectualities and problematic social costs of ObamaCare. The one-two punch: Virtually as many Americans will lack health coverage in 10 years as before the law was passed — but 2 million fewer

Washington - Americans overwhelmingly favor a bill that would give most undocumented immigrants a pathway towards citizenship, according to a new national poll. And a CNN/ORC International survey also indicates that a majority of the public says that the government´s main focus should be legalizing the status of the undocumented rather than border security. The poll was released Thursday, the same day that House Speaker John Boehner signaled any action on immigration is unlikely this year because House Republicans don't trust President Barack Obama on the issue. The day produced more evidence blowing apart President Obama´s claims that there was "not even a smidgen of corruption" or political motivation in the IRS handling of groups applying for tax-exempt status. Mr. Obama wants Americans to believe that the targeting resulted from the confusing tax law governing nonprofits, which he says was "difficult" to interpret and resulted in mere "bureaucratic" mistakes. The White House and congressional Democrats tried to limit the fallout Wednesday from the politically damaging conclusion in a Congressional Budget Office report that the Obamacare entitlement creates a major incentive for some people not to work. While some critics focused on a finding by the CBO that Obamacare will result in 2.5 million fewer workers over a decade, conservatives said the bigger fundamental issue highlighted in the report is one familiar to the welfare state — that taxpayer-funded government subsidies provide disincentives for full-time work. “People used to be stuck in jobs because they needed the health insurance,” said
