NEW YORK — Slavery in the United States was once a roaring success whose wounds still afflict the country today. So says Henry Louis Gates, Jr., who examines both its success and shame in "The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross," his new PBS documentary series that traces 500 years of black history. "Slavery is a perfect example of why we need limits on the more unfortunate aspects of human nature," he says. "Slavery was capitalism gone berserk." The horrifically profitable practice of slavery and the brutal inhumanity of Jim Crow loom large in "The African Americans" (premiering Tuesday at
Comments: Will they mention that the Democrat party was the party of slavery?
Highly doubtful, OP. Also the Democrats who were the party of Jim Crow, KKK, and segregation will be swept into the memory hole. And every Democrat who stood for all or any of these will be whitewashed...or is that a racist term, like black hole?
If Skippy Gates and others like him would stop picking at the ´wound´, just maybe it would have a chance to heal. The sad and dirty fact is that people like Gates and Obama, etc don´t want that wound to heal. No money or graft in a healed wound.
Shouldn´t the title be more like 2 or 3 centuries of African American history? Technically, they wouldn´t be American at all before 1770 or so. The white´s would also not be Americans either. They were just colonists.
Or am I over-thinking this? (sorry for the second post. This was my original thought)
Slavery was cradle to grave socialism gone beserk.
The slaves´ every need was cared for from the point of view of the caretaker. In the case of slavery, from the point of view of the slave owner. In the case of socialism, from the point of view of the ruling elite but dressed up as "for the good of all", but if you analyzed the sutuation it was always the elite who benefitted.
Capitalism seeks to unlock the highest value from every person. If we have a talented software developer we don´t put him in the mail room. Slavery and socialism would.
Gates is ancient history. It´s time to wake up and discover our true value.
Sorry to have to rain on Skip´s parade, but slavery has been around since the beginning of time, especially among the tribes of Africa, and still is to this day. When european entrepeneurs needed a ready supply of labor, the Muslim slave traders and corrupt African Kings were more than willing to fill the orders as they came in. Nobody´s hands are clean, especially the Africans who sold there own to the slavers in the first place!!! Sorry if the truth hurts Skip, get used to it!!!
The racial drum beat is sounding flat and serves no purpose other than to kill trees for newsprint and use up ink. I wonder how many of the so-called african-Americans would like to be living in Africa at this point in time.
And I´m sure a significant portion of this series will be devoted to all those places in the world where persons of color enjoy a higher standard of living than they do in the U.S. s/ Gates should get down on his knees and thank heaven that his ancestors were brought from the dark continent and that he isn´t swatting flies and subsisting on fetid animal scraps right now.
My ancestors were driven from Europe for religious reasons, often after enduring hideous persecution, with many family members martyred for their faith. By Calvinists and Lutherans. Shall I be now permitted to demand reparations from the Presbyterians and the ELCA? It would make about as much sense as this sort of idiocy. It would appear that the real reason behind all of this is to a) generate more controversy so that, b) clowns like this can justify their own existence, importance, and income. If you want to take revenge for the harm done to your long-dead ancestors, get it from the Arab/Muslim slavers and the neighboring tribes in wherever you imagine your ancestors originated. Much of my family came to the US L-O-N-G after the War Between the States, and we owe you precisely nothing. Go away.
#11, Roosevelt’s comments were a result of the debate over dual citizenship, something the US has come to recognized but does not encourage...it’s commonplace for some frequent travelers to obtain dual US-Irish citizenship which then allows them use the Irish passport to travel freely throughout Europe, or for one to have US-Israel dual citizenship...those becoming naturalized US citizens often opt to retain their original citizenship. There is NO African passport because Africa is not a country – it’s a continent made up of 52 sovereign countries that issue country specific passports.
I had the pleasure of “increasing the exposure” of General James during the Nixon re-election in ’72...I can assure you he used “Black” and “African-American” interchangeably during his speeches, as most of us do...
As to your hyphenated list, I guess the answer is when they, respectively, hit the 550 year mark, as have the British, Spanish, Portuguese, and Dutch...
Since Gates has spent so much time studying the slavery of the past and has uncovered a "perfect example of why we need limits on the more unfortunate aspects of human nature, I wonder why he isn´t taking some of his expertise and applying to the modern slave trade ... right now ... throughout the world.
Rather than crying about the past - do something that will help the future.
There´s an article online today in the National Catholic Register entitled: Modern Slave Trade Has Many Faces, Human Rights Authority Says.
The article includes a link to the Global Slavery Index for 2013 (compiled by the Walk Free Foundation). It´s astounding to click on the countries around the world and see the estimate of the number of enslaved.
How does Gates propose that we impose "limits on the more unfortunate aspects of human nature,"? Through more socialism? God had the perfect solution, called The Ten Commandments, which was designed to improve the behavior of primitive peoples, who lived in a world of slavery, child sacrifice, and tribalism. The Law was a schoolteacher, that imposed limits on our behavior through punishments, until Christ came and gave us the Holy Spirit. Christians fought against and outlawed slavery, against the pagan barbarians who we still have with us today, who still believe in slavery, child sacrifice, and tribalism... the Democrats. Slavery has existed since the first enemy was captured in war, and it has little to do with capitalism, but economics. Why does Gates speak of slavery in the past-tense, as though it does not exist any longer? Are Muslims enslaving people even today because they are such evil capitalists?
Capitalism has as its primary founding principle "Free Markets." Slavery is, was and always will be the antithesis of capitalism. Of course an imbecile who cannot understand that a police officer has the right and obligation to verify identity and ownership before ushering a stranger into a house in the dead of night might have trouble with simple concepts like that one too.
When America appeared as a separate, functional state in 1776 it inherited everything that came before, including slavery. Needless to say, a country founded on the US Constitution was inherently at odds with the British heritage of slavery. Surely any sane person would see that the price paid in blood and treasure during the Civil War more than wiped the slate clean over slavery.
Continuous progress was made afterwords in a good faith attempt to assimilate and accept those from that violently different culture of their homeland in Africa.
Guilt over that which the British left behind in this day and age is entirely out of place.
I don´t know what my ancestors did & I don´t much care. I also don´t care about other people´s ancestors. All of this obsessing about the past is infantile, whiny & hopelessly non-progressive. Concentrate on who you are today so that that when you are a dead & gone "ancestor" that your future descendants don´t have to be ashamed of what a pathetic cry-baby you were!
After referencing the "perfect example of why we need limits on the more unfortunate aspects of human nature," Gates goes on to bemoan the high imprisonment rate of African American males. Inconsistent, to say the least.
Good gracious, we have paid and paid in money and blood to give Negroes the opportunity to succeed.
The Rev. Wright episode jerked me to reality. After all this they still hate us and continue to demand more and more.
Just what kind of a country do they want? Tell us now, open and plain, what your perfect America would look like and function like. The description would probably include all white people dead. And where would they be then?
#17. Unclear as to what you´re intimating about slavery but most emphatically, it was not the catalyst for the Civil War. The US was but 71 years old in 1860 while Britain was the ascendant world power; as Prussia had not emerged as yet; w/long memories of Yorktown and New Orleans. Lincoln grasped that if succession were allowed, he would be faced w/a hostile South as well as the world´s pre-eminent military power in Canada w/a Navy that went wherever it pleased. Hence, the war was fought over the Union.
As poster #5 stated, cradle to grave care, not as they would prefer, but as their owner decided. Would a farmer whip to death or starve a racehorse? Would a farmer whip a cow for not giving milk, of course not, he would feed her and call the vet if needed. The same applied for slaves, they were a form of valuable livestock, and cared for as such. And yes, there were a few violent ones, also.
OTOH, indentured servants were in a whole other level of hell. They were contracted to labor for a specific period of time, but the person they worked for did not "own" them and did not care for them, if they couldn´t fulfill the labor contract, another could be found, and that one just pushed out on the street. Many immigrants obtained their money for passage by working a number of years as an indentured servant.
My maternal great-grandmother had been "sold as an apprentice" to a seamstress at age 8 to labor for ten years so her father could get enough money to pay off gambling debts. She died when I was sixteen, and I heard first-hand the kind of treatment she received at the hands of her "boss." Sitting in a corner, sunup to sundown, sewing by hand, 12 stitches to the inch, and beaten if her stitches were "too big" or her seams crooked, that was some childhood.
Sears stock plummeted Wednesday as news came out that Edward Lampert, its stubborn billionaire chairman and CEO, had to surrender majority control of the 120-year-old big box retailer when investors in Lampert’s hedge fund pulled money out. With no end in sight for Lampert’s quixotic turnaround efforts, it’s time to question whether there’s any way to save Sears as long as he remains in charge. (Snip) Lampert began at Sears with the ill-fated $12 billion merger with Kmart in 2005. Sales have declined for 27 straight quarters and the company’s stock is down over 70% from its high in 2007.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has no system in place to prevent fraud when individuals apply for tax credits under Obamacare, according to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA). The IG said in an audit released Tuesday that the IRS has no plan to manage, monitor, or mitigate fraud risk when processing premium tax credits available under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). “The ACA Program has not yet completed a fraud mitigation strategy,” the audit found. “It is important for the IRS to thoroughly consider fraud threats and risks that could impact new ACA systems.” Politico reports: The
Around 100,000 Americans successfully signed up for health insurance in November through the troubled federal online marketplace, HealthCare.gov, a person familiar with the preliminary data confirmed to ABC News. The figure reflects a surge in enrollment as software and hardware fixes to the site were made over the course of the month. In October, only 26,000 people could successfully enroll in Obamacare plans, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. "We´ve been working 24/7 to make improvements, and more consumers are successfully shopping online and enrolling in a health plan each week," Health and Human Services Secretary
NEW HAVEN >> The jail cell death last weekend of Yale University professor Samuel See, known as a brilliant writer and rising star in academia, has shaken up the tight-knit college community. Now adding to the mystery of his unexpected death are apparent connections between the online profiles of See and several escort service websites that include a cache of sexually explicit photos. At least four websites advertising male escort services included a phone number connected to See. The website Ryan Cochran Escort Services includes the same phone number listed on an order of protection filed against See in September.
For many Ann Arborites, Thanksgiving is a day devoted to giving thanks, spending time with family, eating turkey and watching the Detroit Lions. This year, retail giants want that to change. (Snip) The early openings change the game for retail giants looking to boost profits through aggressive holiday sales. It also means millions of retail employees in the U.S. are working on the holiday, and it poses the question to consumers: Is a bargain on a 70-inch television or an Apple iPad worth ditching Thanksgiving dinner? “You couldn’t pay me to stand in a line in the cold on Thanksgiving
Macy´s Inc and a slew of other U.S. retailers are opening on Thanksgiving for the first time ever in a bare-knuckled brawl for a bigger slice of overall holiday sales. But it might not be so easy to lure most Americans from their turkey and football - particularly if the weather is foul. Department store rivals Kohl´s Corp and J.C. Penney Co Inc led a string of Thanksgiving opening announcements after Macy´s said it would open its U.S. stores on the popular holiday, ending a 155-year tradition. Sales trends, survey results and an online "Save Thanksgiving" backlash suggest that shoppers
The captain of a Greenpeace ship released on bail after two months of detention in a Russian prison following an Arctic protest said he and his fellow activists remain in shock at their treatment. American Peter Willcox, who was also in charge of Greenpeace’s Rainbow Warrior when it was sunk in Auckland in 1985 by a bomb planted by the French intelligence service, said the organization again found itself in the crosshairs of a government bent on throttling the environmental group. “There is a similarity between the two cases,” with both the French and Russian governments targeting Greenpeace to prevent
DENVER - 9Wants to Know has learned federal investigators believe Colombian drug cartels have taken root within Colorado´s medical marijuana industry. On Thursday, federal agents from the Drug Enforcement Agency and Internal Revenue Service executed search warrants on several medical marijuana shops in Denver and Boulder. One of those shops is VIP Cannabis, a shop near Federal Boulevard and Alameda Avenue. Numerous calls into VIP Cannabis by 9Wants to Know have not been returned. While the warrants and other documents relating to the investigation are under court-ordered seal, sources spoke on the condition of anonymity to 9Wants to Know.
Minorities continue to offer a bulwark of support for the Affordable Care Act, according to the latest United Technologies/National Journal Congressional Connection Poll. But the deepening discrepancy between their views of Obamacare and their support for President Obama´s reelection last year shows skepticism about whether the big social-welfare program has worked touched even the White House´s most ardent supporters. A battery of questions about who benefits from the health care law, whether it should be repealed, and what´s to blame for its rocky rollout all reveal a portion of the electorate that´s far more favorable to the sweeping reform than
WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama´s signature health law has helped spur stronger economic growth by contributing to slower increases in healthcare prices and spending, the White House said on Wednesday. The White House´s assertion of the economic benefits of the law commonly called Obamacare runs counter to the views of many critics, who say it is raising insurance premiums and chilling job creation. (Snip) "The government´s non-partisan actuaries report this is the result of the terrible economy under President Obama, not his health care law," Boehner press secretary Brendan Buck said in an email.
The Obama administration has not always been great at selling its agenda, but the president´s adoption of the right-wing slur "Obamacare" as a prideful new name for the Affordable Care Act has been a notable exception. We often think the proper response to being called a dirty name is to object. That´s a good first step, but in the long term, the judo approach is constructive -- hurl the power being used against you back to your opponent. For example, in 1968 William F. Buckley could offend Gore Vidal by calling him a "queer" on television. Today, the line would
President Obama on Tuesday sought to redirect some of the political blame for the botched rollout of the federal health insurance exchange to Republicans, characterizing GOP lawmakers as rooting for the law’s failure. Addressing a gathering of business executives, Obama acknowledged that the health-care rollout “has been rough, to say the least,” and he lamented the government’s archaic information-technology procurement system. Obama said that fixes to the HealthCare.gov Web portal are underway and that the exchange will function for a majority of people by the end of November. But the president said staunch opposition from congressional Republicans is inhibiting the
Last summer on his $100 million family tour of Africa, Barack Obama hoped for a priceless photo op with Nelson Mandela, the ailing freedom pioneer who went from prison cell to the presidency of South Africa. Mandela´s family suggested that wouldn’t happen. So, the Obamas did a photo op in Mandela´s former prison cell. Which Obama’s White House quickly tweeted upon word of the icon´s passing at 95. [Skip] But Obama was also caught staring at television coverage of Mandela’s passing, which became Obama’s Photo of the Day.
Hardly a week goes by without Hillary Clinton receiving another award. Last month she was named a “Global Champion” by the International Medical Corps, received the American Patriot Award at the National Defense University Foundation and the Hermandad Award from the Mexican American Leadership Initiative. [Snip] At this rate, if a bunch of elderly left-wing Swedes toss her the Nobel Peace Prize early on, the way they did to Obama, it will barely rate mention among all the other glittering trophies that have been bestowed on a woman whose only actual accomplishment was being married to a crooked governor with
Speaker John Boehner said his party should support gay Republican congressional candidates and urged his colleagues to “be a little more sensitive” when running against women. “Some of our members just aren’t as sensitive as they ought to be,” Boehner said. When asked if he thinks his party should support gay candidates, Boehner simply said: “I do.”
Denver - A baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex ceremony must serve gay couples despite his religious beliefs or face fines, a judge said Friday. The order from administrative law judge Robert N. Spencer said Masterpiece Cakeshop in suburban Denver discriminated against a couple "because of their sexual orientation by refusing to sell them a wedding cake for their same-sex marriage." The order says the cake-maker must "cease and desist from discriminating" against gay couples. Although the judge did not impose fines in this case, the business will face penalties if it continues to turn away gay
DAVID CORN: I saw a president who remains frustrated with the political-media culture that he has to work within, and that he´s looking to rally people, students here, and supporters, and people within the media. CHRIS MATTHEWS: But David Corn, you skeptic. He came to us today. He came amongst us. CORN: He´s trying to rally people behind this vision that he´s been promoting for a couple years. FINEMAN: By the way, he did it the end here, today, Chris, not by defending specifics, but by explaining why he´s in the game to begin with. And I don´t know about you, he´s
In February, the Bush family’s personal emails were hacked by Guccifer, a hacker who uncovered photographs of former President George H. W. Bush in a hospital bed and George W. Bush’s oil paintings in the process. It seems Guccifer has struck again, this time targeting former President Bill Clinton and the Clinton Library. The hacker has reportedly uncovered doodles of Clinton drawing on what were, at the time, classified documents. Among the doodles is apparently a picture of a penis. The document uncovered is a briefing of the strategic measures the United States could take prior Clinton’s decision to intervene in
Former President Bill Clinton shared an anecdote regarding Nelson Mandela and the aftermath of his impeachment Friday on CNN. Clinton revealed shortly after the “impeachment business” finished on Capitol Hill, Rep. Henry Hyde (R., Ill.) who managed the impeachment trial requested a meeting at the White House. The former president granted the meeting out of lessons of humility and forgiveness he learned from Mandela, he said: BILL CLINTON: I remember one day, oh, about a month after the whole impeachment business was over, Henry Hyde, who had run the whole show, unbelievably enough, maybe a few months after, it was
The most curious thing of all about the November jobs report released on Friday was the huge drop in the unemployment rate — and the fact that the Labor Department chose not to disclose that the data going into that figure are under investigation for falsification. On Nov. 19, I broke the news in my column that the Census Bureau, which collects data that goes into the jobless rate on behalf of Labor, had caught one of its enumerators fabricating interviews in 2010. The culprit said back then (and to me during an interview) that he was told to do so by
One definition of a pathological liar is someone who lies where the truth would serve just as well. When President Obama’s uncle, Onyango Obama, was arrested in 2011 for drunk driving, the truth — that Obama had stayed with his uncle years earlier for several weeks as a Harvard law student — would have served the president just fine. No potential Obama voter would have held it against him that an uncle he had stayed with two decades earlier was picked up for DUI. Yet the White House went with a lie, claiming that Obama had never met his uncle. Now that
On Tuesday, The Boston Globe reported that Onyango “Omar” Obama, uncle to President Obama, says that his famous nephew stayed with him while a student at Harvard Law School in the 80s, in contradiction to The White House’s contention that the two had never met. At Thursday’s White House daily briefing, Press Secretary Jay Carney confirmed that the President had, in fact, briefly stayed with “his father’s half-brother,” as Carney described Omar Obama, and that no one had actually asked the President about it when the White House initially commented. The 69 year-old Omar Obama has been facing deportation back

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) is sending out letters telling gun owners to turn over their rifles and shotguns — or else face the consequences. New York City’s ban on rifles and shotguns that hold more than five rounds is now being enforced, according to a letter the NYPD is sending out to targeted city gun owners. “It appears you are in possession of a rifle and/or Shotgun (listed below) that has an ammunition feeding device capable of holding more than five (5) rounds of ammunition.
