In a front-page Washington Post story about the soft style of Pope Francis, Gregory Popcak, who is described as a “marriage and family counselor on the radio and in private practice in Ohio,” related an anecdote about a client who quit therapy on the grounds that “I’m much more of a Pope Francis-Nancy Pelosi Catholic, and you’re an old-school, Pope John Paul II Catholic.” That story, which is unfolding across many dioceses, captures the tediously trumpeted “Francis effect” perfectly. Nancy Pelosi, for that matter, illustrates the phenomenon. She too sees herself as a Pope Francis-Nancy Pelosi Catholic. Pope Francis is “starting
Conspiracy theorists have suggested that John Paul I was a mistake that Vatican insiders quickly "corrected." Wouldn´t surprise me if Francis, given his recent mushy statements, suffered the same fate.
I have not met a pro-life catholic here in MA in years. I have not met a pro-heterosexual marriage catholic here in years. Our present cardinal, o´malley, up until the last pope election, was VERY tight with the kennedys and the other lunatic left here in MA (or at least trying to be)and saw nothing to criticize about abortion and the gay agenda that is sweeping this state. It is interesting to see the change in him since his name was mentioned as a possible candidate for being the pope. With people like this cardinal, and priests that exhort the people to do "what feels good", here in MA the very few people that still attend Mass bear no resemblance to what I thought Christ intended. Feeling good about yourself (indulging yourself)doesn´t sound like loving God and other people.
I agree with #4. This pope wants to reach out to people, and in his efforts to do so, has been taken out of context or misinterpreted. One difference between previous popes and him is that he demonstrates more understanding of others´ foibles, and does not condemn sinners, but takes a "leave her/him to heaven" attitude. For instance, if someone wants to be gay, His Holiness won´t publicly condemn that person. This, however, doesn´t make him pro-gay. He´s not trying to herd the masses, but to accept all humans as God´s children, regardless of their misperceptions.
Pope Jar-Jar is just Obama for the catechism set. His defenders keep insisting that all the liberal scum carrying him around on their shoulders are deceived fools, and they will "turn on him" any day now. When have liberals EVER been mistaken when it comes to looking out for Number One? They know he´s one of theirs. As for the comforting "He can´t change church doctrine" line, so what? Obama hasn´t changed the Constitution, has he? It´s sitting there on the shelf, completely unaltered since the last time it was adjusted, in the 1990s, I think. And yet everything is different. Leftists are EXPERTS at leaving the form of something intact while hollowing out the interior. It´s worked in politics and culture, it´ll work on the Catholic Church too.
I get frazzled by people dropping right into MSM trap on the "Francis is a Luv-Hippie" meme. Such silly credulity from people who wouldn´t (I´d guess) believe every manipulative or misdirected thing the MSM says about, oh, Sarah Palin or Ted Cruz.
Here´s a great quote from Pope Francis you probably never read:
Defend the unborn against abortion even if they persecute you, calumniate you, set traps for you, take you to court, or kill you."
Help me spread this around, would´ja?
Oh BTW, google the quote to find out where and when he said it. And notice that the google results are, I´d guess, less than 1/100 what you´ll get from googling "Pope Francis" "who am I to judge"
OK, I´ll do the math: "Pope Francis" "to court or kill you" = 36,000 results "Pope Francis" "who am I to judge" = 5,700,000 results
There´s a reason the MSM frames him the way they do. Duh.
The "faithful" catholics who are upset with the Pope are like the Prodigal son´s brother who can´t understand why his father welcomes back his brother. They do not understand God´s mercy and love for sinners. All the Pope is doing is what Jesus did
#10 - I´m always suspect when "outliers" jump on the prophecy bandwagon.
Their "accuracy" may be attributed to the fact that they were written after the fact.
They were first published by Arnold de Wyon, and ever since there has been much discussion as to whether they are genuine predictions of St. Malachy or forgeries. The silence of 400 years on the part of so many learned authors who had written about the popes, and the silence of St. Bernard especially, who wrote the "Life of St. Malachy", is a strong argument against their authenticity, but it is not conclusive if we adopt Cucherat´s theory that they were hidden in the Archives during those 400 years. did you know that our Lord, ate with tax collectors and sinners. When speaking a parable, Christ´s words made people uncomfortable. So does Pope Francis. His actions and words make people very uncomfortable. Pope Francis speaks frankly. The Pope spoke of this "throwaway culture" when it comes to protecting life. "Every unborn child unjustly condemned to be aborted has the face of Jesus Christ" He said this to a group of drs. This man just says it like it is. the media will distort his comments to fit their own hatred of the Catholic Church. Regarding Donald Cardinal Wuerl, of DC..and his remark about denial of Communion to Pelosi isn´t pastoral..really..thats the consequences of her actions against life. and the dumb remark that she is not a member of his flock..The Catholic Church is ONE,UNIVERSAL...which means its the same all over the world. there are no fences keeping people in just one parish. Does Pelosie have to go back to San Fran to her parish to attend mass. That´s what the cardinal is saying. The outward sign of Pelosie receiving Communion is telling others its ok to kill unborn babies and still go to communion. That Cardinal is wrong..
There was a time when American Catholics by definition were virulently anti Communist. Wasn´t that the reason th CPUSA couldn´t infiltrate the unions? All those Catholic blue collar workers? Khrushchev said we´d rot from within and we are....from within the Catholic church. I´m also a Catholic from Mass and I see flaming libs who are daily communicants.....Oh the lies that they believe.
I love this cartoon of how the Pope´s words get mangled between his mouth and the media reports.
The way the media has treated Pope Francis reminds me of the 1980s when the press tried to claim that every octogenarian apparatchik who briefly became head of the Soviet Union was a liberal, sympathetic to the West who wanted to reform communism.
A church that is not willing to discern good from evil is a complete waste of time. It pats you on the back as you do your own thing, no matter how many others get hurt, or whether the laws of scripture are broken. It is unworthy of the scripture that it supposedly upholds.
#19. The Pope never made an accommodative statement about homosexual behavior! His was a love the sinner but hate the sin statement. He clearly stated that all Catholics are to be celibate unless they are in a traditional marriage of one man and one woman. The media simply doesn´t ever include that part of his comments in their stories.
Also, at the same time the media was falsely reporting Pope Francis had changed doctrine the Vatican excommunicated a former priest who continued to push for gay marriage and for women priests.
This is a Pope who talks a lot and shares his thoughts in front of a lot of open mics, as opposed to the controlled communications of an encyclical, or the prepared homily. As a consequence of his lack of media savvy, those who want to find something to point to and say " see, he says it OK for me to ___-", Maureen Dowd catholics, Pelosi, etc. can grab a fragment and run. In truth, he has been insistent that practicing Catholics remember that the message of Christ is a message first and foremost of protecting the weak, the meek, the poor. Those who can´t tell the difference between Christianity and Marxism probably need to study up on both. Fish swim, bigots bigot. And Pelosi and Dowd will continue to misrepresent their faith.
The man accused of faking sign interpretation next to world leaders at Nelson Mandela´s memorial told a local newspaper that he was hallucinating and hearing voices. Thamsanqa Jantjie did not describe his qualifications for being a sign language interpreter, but told The Star he works for an interpreting company that paid him $85 for interpreting Tuesday´s event. He told Radio 702 Thursday he´s receiving treatment for schizophrenia and had an episode while on stage. Jantjie did not address allegations by sign language experts that he faked interpretation for the Mandela memorial attended by scores of world leaders and broadcast internationally. The Star quoted
WASHINGTON -- A budget agreement between key Republicans and Democrats. Even President Barack Obama was on board. All without anyone threatening to repeal this or shut down that. Gridlock, however briefly, took an early holiday in the bitterly polarized, Republican-run House. But across the Capitol, the high-minded Senate remains in the grip of some of the worst partisan warfare in its history after majority Democrats curbed the Republicans´ power. A round-the-clock talkathon is the result, putting no one in the mood for cooperation. Majority Harry Reid threatened to shorten the Senate´s cherished Christmas vacation if need be. A Republican called his bluff. "What´s
We are always asking questions, even when we´re not. A new study suggests that "uptalk," phrasing your statements with a rise in pitch at the end, isn´t just something young women do: it seems to be expanding to other demographics, including young men. In Southern California, anyway, young people tend to uptalk no matter their gender, ethnicity or socioeconomic status, suggests a small new study presented last week at the Acoustical Society of America’s annual meeting. “The use of uptalk is certainly more than just stereotypical ‘Valley Girl speak’ in Southern California. In fact, uptalk serves several purposes in the speech of
In the wake of the Obama selfie firestorm from Nelson Mandela’s memorial service, a commonsense guide to taking selfies. I’m old enough to remember when Selfies at a Funeral was a thing. It was a Tumblr, to be precise, so buzzworthy and relevant that by November 13, it was featured on Good Morning America. The site still exists, but on December 10, 2013, it took its own life: “Obama Has Taken A Funeral Selfie,” reads the final post, “So Our Work Here Is Done.” How did we get here? It wasn’t quite a selfie that POTUS snapped, and it wasn’t exactly a
TALLAHASSEE —A nearly 6-foot-tall "Festivus" pole made from empty beer cans will be put up in the Florida Capitol this week as a not-so-subtle protest to the recent placement of a Christmas nativity scene. The mock monument will be erected most likely on Wednesday in the same first-floor rotunda as a nativity scene depicting the birth of Jesus Christ put up last week by the Florida Prayer Network. "I still chuckle, I literally can´t believe there will be a pile of Pabst Blue Ribbon cans in the state rotunda," said Chaz Stevens, a Deerfield Beach resident who applied to the
The federal health care exchange is incorrectly determining that some people are eligible for Medicaid when they clearly are not, leaving them with little chance to get the subsidized insurance they are entitled to as the Dec. 23 deadline for enrollment approaches. State and industry officials haven´t quantified the problem yet, but the National Association of State Medicaid Directors may release information next week after following up on reports from around the country, says Executive Director Matt Salo. Here´s what happens: When consumers applying for insurance put their income information into subsidy calculators on HealthCare.gov — the exchange handling insurance sales for
HAVANA — Elian Gonzalez, the young Cuban boy who survived a boat sinking and became a political football during the 2000 U.S. presidential campaign as the subject of an international custody fight, is on his first trip overseas since being reunited with his father. Cuban state-run media say Gonzalez is in Ecuador this week as part of a 200-strong delegation to the 23rd World Festival of Youth and Students, which runs through Friday. In a recent interview published on the official website Cubadebate, Gonzalez said living in Cuba afforded him more privacy than if he had stayed in the United
When a former hard-hitting news anchor’s daytime talk show suffers dangerously slipping ratings, what’s the next step? If it’s Katie Couric, the answer is to trade a history of responsible reporting for irresponsible scaremongering. In her segment last week on the HPV vaccine, Couric delivered a blow to both public health and her image. The question now is what Couric – if she’s willing – can do to repair the damage. It’s a sad turn of events for Couric, once known for drawing attention to public health issues such as colon cancer, which killed her husband. The former CBS anchor, soon
If a five-part opus in The New York Times by Andrea Elliott is to believed, we live in a hard-hearted city. But if you read closely, it suggests just the opposite. Begin with the family at the center of this story. The mother, father and eight kids aren’t really homeless at all. True, they live in housing meant for “homeless families.” But their 540-square-foot unit gives them a solid roof over their heads, in addition to city-provided meals and services. One city official tells us Elliott and the Times ignored many key facts about the family and that its situation is “atypical.” “New
President Barack Obama is flying to South Africa Monday morning to join the emotional extravaganza around the graveside of former president Nelson Mandela, leaving Vice President Joe Biden on his lonesome to attend meetings in the empty White House. The president will board U.S. Air Force One to jet around the world to Johannesburg, the capital of South Africa, while Joe stays behind to keep the lights on at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Obama is flying away from supposedly high-priority negotiations to prevent another budget shutdown of Uncle Sam’s federal government, and also from the top-priority effort to rebuild his crashed Obamacare program. He’s
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has been in the news fairly often of late, and not just in his home state. The Democrat has been the frequent subject of some admittedly long-shot speculation over a 2016 presidential run if Hillary passes on the ticket. (Personally, I would find a Cuomo candidacy hilarious, not to mention good news for the GOP, when he tried to explain to the rest of the nation how he signed the NY Safe Act, one of the most restrictive and odious gun control laws in the nation.) When he was elected Governor of New York, he
In the late 1930s, as humans managed to launch yet another war that would fail to end all wars, H.G. Wells wrote a series of essays laying out a plan for a better world. Wells, a novelist, reformer and sometime historian, believed that technology could connect people in ways that had never before been possible, joining them in a network and uniting their wisdom into a kind of synaptic and singular mind. The structure Wells imagined would be, he declared, “a sort of mental clearinghouse for the mind, a depot where knowledge and ideas are received, sorted, summarized, digested, clarified,
When I was a kid, I knew two different Santa Clauses. The first had a fat belly, rosy cheeks, a long white beard, and skin as pink as bubble gum. He was omnipresent, visiting my pre-school and the local mall, visible in all of my favorite Christmas specials. Then there was the Santa in my family’s household, in the form of ornaments, cards, and holiday figurines. A near-carbon copy of the first one—big belly, rosy cheeks, long white beard: check, check, check. But his skin was as dark as mine. Seeing two different Santas was bewildering. Eventually I asked my father what
US President Barack Obama may have moved the masses attending Nelson Mandela’s memorial service with his stirring eulogy, but it was his grinning "selfie" with the Danish and British premiers that set social networks abuzz. In a candid moment captured by a photographer, Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt can be seen holding up her smartphone, with Obama lending a helping hand, as they pose for a picture with David Cameron, all three of them smiling broadly in their seats at Soweto’s World Cup stadium.(Snip)Mashable, the news and technology website, ran the photograph under the headline: ‘‘Dear Obama: Funerals are no place
Johannesburg - A man who provided sign language interpretation on stage for Nelson Mandela´s memorial service, attended by scores of heads of state, was a "fake," the national director of the Deaf Federation of South Africa said on Tuesday. Asked about the claim by The Associated Press, South Africa´s government said it was preparing a statement. Three sign language experts said the man was not signing in South African or American sign languages. South African sign language covers all of the country´s 11 official languages, according to the federation. It wasn´t immediately clear if the unidentified man was using a
On his way to the podium at the memorial ceremony for former South African president Nelson Mandela, President Obama walked down the line of dignitaries, greeting other leaders there to pay their respects. Among the hands shaken: that of Cuban leader Raul Castro. Obama neither made a special effort to shake Castro’s hand nor to avoid him. A snub might have been awkward: In his speech, Obama praised Mandela’s “greatest gift” as “his recognition that we are all bound together in ways that can be invisible to the eye; that there is a oneness to humanity; that we achieve ourselves by
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) snapped at conservative groups that have come out in opposition to the budget deal reached Wednesday between Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.). "They´re using the American people for their own purposes. This is ridiculous," Boehner said at a press conference with other members of House Republican leadership on Wednesday. Over the past few days, a number of conservative groups have blasted the deal because it sets discretionary spending levels in the budget higher than previous levels under sequestration. In the past three days, the influential Heritage Action, Club for Growth, Americans
A black fashion student says he was brutally attacked by a gang of Hasidic men who shouted anti-gay slurs at him while he was walking through Williamsburg after a night of partying, the Daily News has learned. Taj Patterson, 22, was headed home to Fort Greene around 4:30 a.m. on Dec. 1 when he says more than a dozen ultra-Orthodox Jewish men began assaulting him on Flushing Ave. and yelling, “Stay down, f----t!”
A “presidential selfie” featuring President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron, and Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service began making the rounds this morning, but it’s the person not included in the frame who caught everyone’s attention: As anyone with two eyes and a Twitter account has noticed, Michelle Obama does not appear amused. Of course, though a picture says a thousand words, not all of those words are necessarily true. FLOTUS might not have even known the photo was taking place. Or she could disapprove of funeral selfies. Either way.
President Obama’s job approval among American voters has dropped to negative territory with just 38 percent voicing their approval versus the 58 who says they disapprove, according to a national poll released Tuesday by the independent Quinnipiac University. That is one percent less than the 39% who said they approved of him in last month’s poll. The majority of the 2,692 registered voters the University in early December said that the president is not honest and trustworthy. When asked, “Do you approve or disapprove of the way Barack Obama is handling his job as President?,” respondents gave Obama lackluster ratings
Looks like this president can’t get away with flirting in front of his wife… It appears that first lady Michelle Obama was none too pleased with the way that President Barack Obama was acting toward Denmark Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt during a ceremony honoring Nelson Mandela, and before too long, they switched seats. This lmao! Michelle Obama vs Prime Minister of Denmark at Mandela´s ceremony. pic.twitter.com/Rq4uF9fTaZ — Stun (@TheBlogPirate) December 10, 2013
Barack Obama has arrived in South Africa to lead the American delegation at a memorial service for former South African President Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg. But his party is reportedly stuck in traffic and he is said to have arrived late at the stadium for the ceremony. [Snip] But Mr Clinton, Mr Carter and his wife Rosalynn have all traveled separately to the event. According to reports, Mr Obama and his delegation are stuck in a lines of traffic caused by tens of thousands of people making their way to the event. Mr Obama is among the foreign leaders who
The sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela´s memorial yesterday "made up his own signs," according to South Africa´s deaf federation. "He´s a complete fraud," Cara Loening, director of Sign Language Education and Development in Cape Town, said according to ITV News. "He wasn´t even doing anything, There was not one sign there. Nothing. He was literally flapping his arms around." Delphin Hlungwane, an official South African sign language interpreter at DeafSA, told Reuters:
