US shutdown: Political divisions take US to within 24
hours of debt ceiling deadline with no deal in place

Telegraph (UK), by Peter Foster and Raf Sanchez

The US was scrambling to avert a potentially disastrous breach of its debt ceiling on Wednesday morning, after Republican attempts to table a deal collapsed in disarray overnight, leaving the prospects for a last-minute deal on a knife-edge. America´s divided political system now has just 24 hours to find a compromise to the budget stand-off between the White House and hardline Republicans, with the deadline to extend America´s borrowing limit falling due on Thursday. In a sign of plunging confidence in Washington on Wall Street, Fitch, a leading credit ratings agency announced that the US was now on a "negative watch"

Just now on "Negative Watch"??? Just now you have plunging confidence??? With that kind of reaction time, how can they even begin to pose as financial rating experts???

I was watching fox last night, off and on, and they are salivating in glee that the Tea Party might get squashed. I didn´t think I could get any more revolted by our "news" media, but because I had hope for fox, they are making my stomach turn in a big way.
And then, to top it off, I heard the loon mccain raving on the floor of the senate. The Twilight Zone was a much more enjoyable, entertaining horror show than today´s reality.

One part of the government that didn´t (never) shut down is the collection arm of the IRS. Those dollars keep flowing into the treasury at the rate of 200+ billion per month. Interest on the debt 20 billion. That we would default because the borrowing limit isn´t raised is another lie.
Also another barely mentioned story was the buying binge by all the departments that had money left at the end of the fiscal year and needed to spend it or have their budgets reduced for the coming year. And there is nowhere to cut and we need to borrow more???

When the "sequestration" chunk of detritus was thrown in the pond, there wasn´t even a ripple. There is so much fraud, corruption and waste to draw on that it wasn´t even felt.

Same with the debt ceiling. Don´t even raise it. These miscreants in the House and the Senate won´t feel it anyway until we go to the polls.

So, Suck it Up! There´s $billion$ floating around just waiting to be scarfed up that otherwise will go into private bank accounts.

I repeat: Suck it Up!

Ditto the comments made by #8. The default is a myth. Default and raising the debt ceiling are two TOTALLY DIFFERENT issue that have been collapsed into one issue. We can continue to pay interest on the debt regardless of whether or not we raise the debt ceiling. We simply cannot continue to borrow more in order to spend more.

Now, on a separate issue -- where the hell is Reince Priebus? We are now on week 3 -- there should be ads running in every media market SHOWING Reid and Obama in 2006 voting against a raise of the debt ceiling and their DIRE warnings about stealing from our children. We lose the ground war because we aren´t getting our side out and we KNOW that the media isn´t going to get it out, so we have to produce our own ads and get it out ourselves!!!

The ONLY way that the US would default is if zippy refused to authorize the payment on the interest. That is an impeachable offense, not that he would care. There is absolutely no excuse for him doing that, except to further the destruction of America, and he would own it. It might not effect him personally but it should have major repercussions in the elections next year.

But conservatives need to be shouting it from the rooftops. Sarah talked about it yesterday on Hannity and every other conservative pundit in the media should be saying it as well.

BTW, apparently Sheila Jackson Lee, that fountain of wisdom, is calling for martial law.

The official WH position is that we must increase the debt limit immediately so we can borrow the money to pay our debts. Honestly that is what Carney said. We are 17 trillion in the hole now and it´s getting worse. This is the same mentality that caused the 2008 crash.

I have the perfect solution to solving such negotiating dilemma´s in the future when the gov´t is shut down:

1. Those in Congress do NOT get paid, and it is NOT retroactive.

2. They are all prohibited from wearing pants or skirts during the shutdown.

That would settle things very quickly !

I can´t think of a better way to force spending cuts than to refuse to raise the debt ceiling. There will be no default. Maybe the the left wing rating agency will lower US bonds ratings. Big Whoop! It´s worth it to get spending under control. Shut Obama down. Go for it! It´s way better than the sequester.

In the long view of this era, Obama and the Democrats will be blamed for the destruction of our free society as we know it. The real lesson in all of this chaos is never, never compromise your principles.

The good folks of the Tea Party know this, and they are a bastion of common sense in the House of Representatives. The Senate, and I mean both parties, on the other hand is comprised of a den of thieves and turncoats who would barter away your future and freedom, just to get along.

The so called debt ceiling deadline indicates nothing more than the government continued to overspend when cuts in the welfare state were needed. Raising the ceiling does nothing more than to approve the continued destruction of our economy.

Community Organizers and socialists are the bane of a free society. Throw the bums out!

I am so tired of hearing the "de-fund Obamacare" crowd talking about standing on "principle." De-funding is just another way of killing Obamacare which was attempted and failed 46 times before.

Picking a fight that is impossible to win is not principled, it´s stupid! It distracted from and undercut the fight to bring deficit spending under control. Most Americans want deficit spending brought under control while most Americans were undecided about Obamacare because they were still trying to understand it.

The recent public resistance to Obamacare is due to the roll-out mess that is Obamacare. The de-fund Obamacare crowd had nothing to do with it.

If the de-fund crowd keeps this up, the sequester (which has resulted in true deficit spending reduction) will not only be delayed but could be eliminated!

To sum up the whole mess and how the Tea Party (and We The People) are going to be thrown on the altar of political convenience and demagoguery by the RNC and the White House and Reid is Jehmu´s comment at the end of the show: We won and that´s just how it is.

GO INTO DEFAULT! It will force the Demorats to curve their "buying votes with the public treasury" practices and start paying for necessities, the military and pay the debt instead of adding to it.

Democrats would never get elected if they couldn´t buy votes with taxpayer/debt raising programs like entitlements, food stamps, welfare, subsidies and grants. They have destroyed this nation with trillions of debt, a healthcare program nobody can afford and attempts at “fairness” and “equality” that is not fair and makes nobody equal; it has run amok. The wealthy are wealthier than ever while more people are on food stamps, welfare and subsidies. The working class is being strangled out of existence... And the people keep voting for these losers!!!! WAKE UP!

How long does one think that the average citizen would last if he/her had several credit cards and every month that the bill came due on the one with the highest debt on it, that they just borrowed enough money on another credit card just to pay the INTEREST on the other card? just how long could that exist? And how long would the banks be willing to continue increasing their borrowing rate? Is the US any different? I know all about the trust and faith of the government, but there is going to come a time that nobody is going to buy US bonds simply because they have become worthless. All of this is simply a Ponzi scheme at there are some of us that realize it. Of course, I keep hearing about how the pubies are about to cave in on all of these "negotiations". As I and everyone else knew they would.

She read the cruel posts and Internet snark about her appearance, and it was just too much. “It got to me like it gets kids and teenagers,” she told the Associated Press. The “Vertigo” actress, considered one of the great beauties in her day, posted a note on her Facebook wall Thursday, acknowledging that she’d gotten fat injections in her face and addressing her halted

President Obama addressed the White House press corps today, announcing that with the final numbers in, Obamacare´s exchanges have attracted eight million sign-ups -- 35 percent of whom are "under the age of 35," he said. Several elements of his comments were misleading: (1) At first blush, the 35 percent stat is both significant and impressive. As recently as last month, the share of "young invincibles" signing up for plans was struggling in the 25 percent range, far short of the actuarial target of nearly 40 percent. A leap into the mid-30´s, while still shy of the goal, would constitute a major step, and would bode well for the risk pools'

It’s the stuff of Westerns: a showdown on the desert plains, the big bad government against an underdog farmer. Though the story has only grabbed national headlines in the past several days, rancher Cliven Bundy has illegally grazed cattle on the Nevada land surrounding his farm for over 20 years. He hasn’t paid grazing fees since 1993, and refuses to renew the necessary grazing permit.(Snip)Rather than using the avenues and pathways presented to him, Bundy has staunchly declared his own law and allegiances. Unfortunately, reality doesn’t work this way. If only it did—we could rebel for paying stupid taxes, refuse to

A group of seven multiracial Washington and Lee University (W&L) students are demanding the school remove all Confederate flags from campus and "acknowledge" General Robert E. Lee´s "dishonorable side." According to the Roanoke Times, "seven multiracial students, calling themselves ´The Committee,´" have also demanded the school "acknowledge and apologize for participating in chattel slavery." They want recognition of "Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the undergraduate campus" and an end to "neo-Confederates" marching across campus "to the Lee Chapel on Lee-Jackson Day." The students say they will "engage in civil disobedience" if their demands are not met by September 1st. They added: "The

The White House is going to war with another fox — and this time, it’s personal. The Wall Street Journal reports that a red fox has been causing chaos around the White House, tripping security alarms, digging up Michelle’s garden and distracting the president from his duties. The Secret Service won’t give any details about how often the fox trips the White House’s obviously sophisticated security alarms, but rest assured, officials say, they’re watching. President Obama was apparently “stunned” to see the fox roaming freely down the oft-photographed White House colonnade, home to the world’s shortest, but most dramatic, outdoor strolls. The bushy-tailed visitor

GREENSBORO, Ga. — Golf holes the size of pizzas. Soccer balls on the back nine. A mulligan on every hole. These are some of the measures — some would say gimmicks — that golf courses across the country have experimented with to stop people from quitting the game. Golf has always reveled in its standards and rich tradition. But increasingly a victim of its own image and hidebound ways, golf has lost five million players in the last decade, according to the National Golf Foundation, with 20 percent of the existing 25 million golfers apt to quit in the next few years. People under 35 have especially spurned the game, saying it takes too

Hi, everybody. For millions of Americans, this time of year holds great meaning. Earlier this week, we hosted a Passover Seder at the White House, and joined Jewish families around the world in their re-tellings of the story of the Exodus and the victory of faith over oppression. And this Sunday, Michelle, Malia, Sasha, and I will join our fellow Christians around the world in celebrating the Resurrection of Christ, the salvation he offered the world, and the hope that comes with the Easter season. These holy days have their roots in miracles that took place long ago. And yet, they still inspire us, guide us, and strengthen us today. They remind us of our

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Thursday that a family of dissident ranchers and their supporters in his home state of Nevada are ´domestic terrorists,´ citing this week´s standoff with the federal government´s Bureau of Land Management. Cliven Bundy has refused to pay grazing fees for land where his hundreds of cattle roam every day. The land is owned by the federal government, which says he owes more than $1 million. Bundy, however, insists that since his family has been using the land since the 1870s, Uncle Sam can´t collect the grazing fees. A tense standoff developed this week after

To "honor the dignity and work of immigrants," Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi helps Bishop Marc Andrus wash the feet of two children Thursday at Saint John the Evangelist Episcopal Church in San Francisco. Pelosi also used the occasion to talk about passing HR15 - bipartisan immigration legislation that her office says would "reduce the deficit by nearly $1 trillion, secure our borders, unite our families, protect our workers and provide an earned pathway to citizenship." The Democratic leader´s ceremony coincides with Pope Francis´ similar ceremony in Rome to mark Holy Week.

WASHINGTON--Rushing to an afternoon vote last month, Sen. Ted Cruz hopped the underground tram to the U.S. Capitol from his office across the street. The Texan planted his black ostrich cowboy boots in the middle of the small subway car without getting so much as a nod from the other senators--Republican or Democrat--amiably chatting or huddled in their seats. Mr. Cruz finds himself standing alone a lot these days. His response to the cold shoulders: "The establishment despised Ronald Reagan" before he became president, "but the people loved him." For the 43-year-old Republican, the Reagan name illuminates his political life´s

Imagine a vendor on the National Mall, selling burgers and dogs, who hasn’t paid his rent in 20 years. He refuses to recognize his landlord, the National Park Service, as a legitimate authority. Every court has ruled against him, and fines have piled up. What’s more, the effluents from his food cart are having a detrimental effect on the spring grass in the capital. Would an armed posse come to his defense, aiming their guns at the park police? Would the lawbreaker get prime airtime on Fox News, breathless updates in the Drudge Report, a sympathetic ear from Tea Party Republicans?
