HONOLULU — A unit of the U.S. Department of Defense has been holding so-called "arrival ceremonies" for seven years, with an honor guard carrying flag-draped coffins off of a cargo plane as though they held the remains of missing American service men and women returning that day from old battlefields. After NBC News raised questions about the arrival ceremonies, the Pentagon acknowledged Wednesday that no honored dead were in fact arriving, and that the planes used in the ceremonies often couldn´t even fly but were towed into position. The solemn ceremonies at a military base in Hawaii are a sign of the

Rethinking cryptic OP comment. Honoring the remains is not sickening. But the cynical stagecraft that has accompanied these "welcoming ceremonies" is. Surely there is a more dignified, honest way to do so.

Okay, this is NBC. No friend of WTP and certainly not of the military. Any time NBC/CBS/ABC/CNN/etc can contrive to make our military look bad, we can count on them to spread the tar, far and wide.

Re "our military", this article is about what the Pentagon has been pulling. I do not consider the Pentagon to be "our military". Our military consists of those who defend our country and its interests. Not a bunch of politicians, in or out of uniforms.

Sometimes intentions DO matter. If the military´s intention is to provide a respectful ceremony for MIA families in order to allow them to grieve and obtain closure, I don´t see what is wrong with that. Repeating the internal reference to it as "the big lie" is just repeating some cynical, backroom, mortuary humor in order to make the military look bad. Not nice.

Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC), whose mission is to return and identify the 83,000 missing service men and women from World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

After reading the comments here, I think #8 has added some clarity to the motive for these ceremonies, and I´m not at all outraged as some here.

Reread #8: "Sometimes intentions DO matter. If the military´s intention is to provide a respectful ceremony for MIA families in order to allow them to grieve and obtain closure, I don´t see what is wrong with that."

These are not returning remains from our "current" wars, which I believe go through Dover AF base. These are MIA´s from the wars that took place in the Pacific rim. Of course WWII remains could be either side of the world.

I think JPAC is trying its hardest to identify these MIA´s because they do care. Any person in the military would want the same care and attention if it were their remains. These remains may only be parts of a body and decomposed at that. Science can work wonders but sometimes it is slow by necessity.

As usual the media are trying to make the military look bad - shame on NBC for not digging a little deeper.

What do you expect when every available working aircraft in the US Government is being used constantly to shuffle the PINO, Mooch, the dog, the kids and several hundred family and grifters around the world on jaunts? Eating lobster, swilling free alcohol and collecting souveniers from third world countries is much more important than honoring our war dead.

These people may be partying now but they will lose everything they have gained in the past fifty years.

I´m with #8. The military is all about ceremony but the logistics of getting everything together on cue - every time another set of remains was returned - would require a dedicated group of aircraft and honor guard be available on call to transport and escort what are often little more than a few bones and some teeth. I have less regard for the practice of flying the bodies of our fallen in Iraq/Afghanistan home in the cargo holds of commercial airliners.

And all of this started before the faux administration assumed power.

Fake President, fake treasury, fake money, Kabuki in congress- perpetually, fake air port security, fake voters, fake poverty, fake racisim in our country - why not fake recovery of lost service persons?

Look, this is such BS - think of the alternative; These remains are found only on rare occassions nowadays. Who would come to the ceremonies if they were not on a regular schedule? Are they going to use a giant C-17 or C-5A to fly in two arm bones and a partial jaw bone? If the remains behind the ceremony are real- that´s the question. Why I have no confidence that they are real- My Øbama Government- totally fake and pretend.

But, the respect and honor for our lost service people should remain real and proper.

I can attest to one fact about the DOD. I spent most of my adult life in and/or working for DOD, both as an enlisted man and a civilian. I started with them in the early 60´s and retired in 2000. Back when I started my career, we were considered solders, treated like solders, and were expected to act like solders. If we didn´t, they got rid of us. I´ve watched and the military, especially the branch I worked for (Dept of AF) become more and more PC as years went by. Now, the top brass gets to be there because they are the best politicians and rear end kissers, not because of any qualities of leadership or anything else. And as such, they are always on the lookout for some way to make themselves and their units standout to the higher ups. So, it´s no wonder to me that someone dreamed up this program to "show the public" just how dedicated they are to doing the job of finding and identifing the remains of lost soldiers, sailors, and airmen. To me it´s really sickening. Where are the generals of yesteryear that where true soldiers dedicated to protecting this nation?

Is it really "dignified" to pretend to unload remains from planes on which they did not arrive? Does this somehow honor those whose remains are being returned here for identification and burial? Does this fakery make the surviving families feel better? I would be insulted.

I believe that the return and identification of remains, and military burial, are mandatory. What we do as Americans. But faking all of this "return ceremony" is not. Surely someone could come up with something real and appropriate and dignified.

Anyone who has ever lost a loved one knows there is no such thing as "closure". That is a pop-psych, media-friendly expression without any basis in fact. And certainly no fake ceremony will bring "closure".

Once identification has been made in the laboratory, the return of the remains of a loved one long missing verifies their death. But it does not bring closure. The wondering may cease; the pain of loss is permanent.

Most religious movies feel as if they’re made by a church committee, but every now and then a wild-eyed prophet wanders in and rattles the theater with brimstone. Regardless of your feelings about either movie, Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” qualifies and so does Martin Scorsese’s “The Last Temptation of Christ.” Now director Darren Aronofsky (“Black Swan,” “The Wrestler”) has ascended to the mountaintop and returned with the strangest, most visionary cinematic parable yet. “Noah” is equal parts ridiculous and magnificent, a showman’s folly and a madman’s epic. A group of seven multiracial Washington and Lee University (W&L) students are demanding the school remove all Confederate flags from campus and "acknowledge" General Robert E. Lee´s "dishonorable side." According to the Roanoke Times, "seven multiracial students, calling themselves ´The Committee,´" have also demanded the school "acknowledge and apologize for participating in chattel slavery." They want recognition of "Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the undergraduate campus" and an end to "neo-Confederates" marching across campus "to the Lee Chapel on Lee-Jackson Day." The students say they will "engage in civil disobedience" if their demands are not met by September 1st. They added: "The

I began reading the entirety of the first section of the New York Times at nine years old, and continued that practice, more or less, for decades.(snip) ...the power of reverence, intrinsic to what I call the “cascade” of The Times: the near avalanche-like flow and distribution of information through electronic and print networks: through like-minded network newscasts, magazines, local newspaper s, blogs, daytime talk TV, late-night entertainment, statements at media award ceremonies, the celebrity Twitterverse, etc. The cascade rolls through Saturday Night Live, Jon Stewart, The New Yorker, the mouths of third-grade teachers, Elmo, Madonna and Susan Sarandon …through

GREENSBORO, Ga. — Golf holes the size of pizzas. Soccer balls on the back nine. A mulligan on every hole. These are some of the measures — some would say gimmicks — that golf courses across the country have experimented with to stop people from quitting the game. Golf has always reveled in its standards and rich tradition. But increasingly a victim of its own image and hidebound ways, golf has lost five million players in the last decade, according to the National Golf Foundation, with 20 percent of the existing 25 million golfers apt to quit in the next few years. People under 35 have especially spurned the game, saying it takes too

Hi, everybody. For millions of Americans, this time of year holds great meaning. Earlier this week, we hosted a Passover Seder at the White House, and joined Jewish families around the world in their re-tellings of the story of the Exodus and the victory of faith over oppression. And this Sunday, Michelle, Malia, Sasha, and I will join our fellow Christians around the world in celebrating the Resurrection of Christ, the salvation he offered the world, and the hope that comes with the Easter season. These holy days have their roots in miracles that took place long ago. And yet, they still inspire us, guide us, and strengthen us today. They remind us of our

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Thursday that a family of dissident ranchers and their supporters in his home state of Nevada are ´domestic terrorists,´ citing this week´s standoff with the federal government´s Bureau of Land Management. Cliven Bundy has refused to pay grazing fees for land where his hundreds of cattle roam every day. The land is owned by the federal government, which says he owes more than $1 million. Bundy, however, insists that since his family has been using the land since the 1870s, Uncle Sam can´t collect the grazing fees. A tense standoff developed this week after

To "honor the dignity and work of immigrants," Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi helps Bishop Marc Andrus wash the feet of two children Thursday at Saint John the Evangelist Episcopal Church in San Francisco. Pelosi also used the occasion to talk about passing HR15 - bipartisan immigration legislation that her office says would "reduce the deficit by nearly $1 trillion, secure our borders, unite our families, protect our workers and provide an earned pathway to citizenship." The Democratic leader´s ceremony coincides with Pope Francis´ similar ceremony in Rome to mark Holy Week.

WASHINGTON--Rushing to an afternoon vote last month, Sen. Ted Cruz hopped the underground tram to the U.S. Capitol from his office across the street. The Texan planted his black ostrich cowboy boots in the middle of the small subway car without getting so much as a nod from the other senators--Republican or Democrat--amiably chatting or huddled in their seats. Mr. Cruz finds himself standing alone a lot these days. His response to the cold shoulders: "The establishment despised Ronald Reagan" before he became president, "but the people loved him." For the 43-year-old Republican, the Reagan name illuminates his political life´s

For Hillary Clinton, having her own baby grandchild to kiss on the campaign trail, could be one of the biggest boosts to her possible presidential election campaign. Although the former Secretary of State and First Lady has not said if she will run in 2016, the arrival of her first grandchild will soften her image, analysts have said. While Chelsea only revealed her pregnancy on Thursday, supporters of her mother have already started cooing over a possible baby in the White House. With the Clintons having a near-royal status in the U.S., the announcement of a new arrival due this fall has sent

Imagine a vendor on the National Mall, selling burgers and dogs, who hasn’t paid his rent in 20 years. He refuses to recognize his landlord, the National Park Service, as a legitimate authority. Every court has ruled against him, and fines have piled up. What’s more, the effluents from his food cart are having a detrimental effect on the spring grass in the capital. Would an armed posse come to his defense, aiming their guns at the park police? Would the lawbreaker get prime airtime on Fox News, breathless updates in the Drudge Report, a sympathetic ear from Tea Party Republicans?
