´I really believe we are in a great position right now," says Michael Needham, the 31-year-old president of Heritage Action, the lobbying arm of the nation´s largest conservative think tank. By "we" he means the Republican Party and the conservative movement; their "great position" refers to the potential to win the political battle over the government shutdown. Though Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is the public face of the high-risk strategy to "defund" ObamaCare, the masterminds behind it are a new generation of young conservatives, chief among them Mr. Needham. From a tactical view,

I don´t care if nobody blinks. Let´s default on the debt. Do it obama´s way. It will only be a technical default. Keep paying all the obamaPhones and free stuff, but default on the debt. That will bring pain to the White House.
If we don´t stop some of the spending now, we will certainly have a real default in several years, when interest rates are much higher. But that will not be a technical default, due to Washington negotiations. That will be a real default. No money.

Needham is the face of the conservative alternative to the MSM. Heritage Action placed ads all over the country during the congressional recess to get conservatives excited about defunding Obamacare. The MSM and the Republican establishment didn´t know why Ted Cruz had so much conservative backing out in the sticks -- that´s why.
We are playing a high stakes game of chess here and we need players that can outsmart and outplay the Democrat Machine.
Michael gives me hope but the American People MUST be taught that relying on the government for your pay check, healthcare, food or whatever is not good... AND EXPLAIN WHY. The Republicans have never been good at articulating why conservatism is good and liberalism is bad. THAT BETTER CHANGE SOON.
Democrats (and the media) have taught the public that freedom is freedom from responsibility and accountability and people have bought it because humans love to be lazy, envious, jealous and love to pass the buck and blame on to others when things go sour. The Democrats know this and are always there to provide an excuse and a taxpayer funded government check (for their vote).
THAT MUST STOP and the only way Republicans can gain ground is if they make the public understand that there are no free rides, EVERYTHING HAS A COST, that when you get something for nothing, the country suffers and that freedom, unity and stability become casualties. Freedom is only possible when people are responsible for their lives and livelihood and live by some set of moral standards (that the media abhors).
There is hope but the Democrat Machine and the Media has done an outstanding job of making people dependent on them, live destructive unproductive parasitic lives while blaming others.
Americans need to get a grip on reality, understand who the enemy is, and put on their big boy pants and start living without government assistance.

I once thought that there was a strategy behind what the political parties did in congress and the White House. We have no real government, just a group of liberal drop-outs whose only true goal is self preservation. Truly, only the Tea Party stands between us and them.
To most observers, who think the GOP is losing this fight, Mr. Needham´s optimism that Republicans will carry the day may seem astonishing. But Mr. Needham says the second-guessers are wrong.
Sorry Mike, but you´re wrong. IF Mr Obama were not a Marxist communist along with his entire staff, you might be correct but that´s not the case. What Republicans do not realize is that Obama is way beyond the law and way beyond any type of morals you assume he ought to use. Did you see the Vietnam vets get arrested? Did you see the fences and guards around the WWII Memorial? Did you see the completely illegal closing of privately run organizations? Have you heard of the thousands of illegal alien felons being set free, some of them murderers? Have you noticed Tea Party groups still so not have 501c3 status and never will? They´re not nudging anymore. They are shoving and next they´ll be shooting. The GOP will do nothing but send letters of concern when you see what Obama does if the GOP does not cave (and I promise, they will cave). Mr Obama´s goal is nothing other than taking supreme control of the USA regardless of what anyone thinks. Have you seen one of the thousands of military assault vehicles now owned and operated by local police departments? Why do think they have those? Space invaders? These people are serious. The GOP is a paper tiger about to be burnt to ashes while claiming victory. No one can ignore reality like the GOP, just like no one can snatch defeat from the jaws of victory like the GOP. Just watch.
This was a great article two days ago when it was written, and even better today: Mr. Feulner was famous for preaching that "in the war of ideas there is no room for pacifists," and Mr. Needham has taken those words to heart.
Keep up the great leadership Heritage Action!
And #1, agree, let the so-called "default" happen on Barry´s watch... Only thing, America takes in enough taxes daily so this is a misnomer...
Reading all the media coverage of the shutdown, Republicans are losing the battle, opinion Is favoring Obama , blah, blah blah. Just like the old Pravda joke. An American car and a Russian car get in a race. The American car wins. Pravda reports "The Russian car came in second, but the American car came in next to last." Reminds you of our press, doesn´t it?
The GOP may be unpopular but conservative ideas are not. Our current party leadership rose up through the ranks via the good old boy system, certainly not because of their unique ability to win over voters. The new wave of Republicans, like Cruz, Paul, etc are threatening to crack the corrupt political power structures, cronyism, and sabotage of the McCain wing of the RINO permenent minority. If they survive the storm we may be on to something.
It´s the American pocketbook hat will determine if the new Conservatives do well. Just how much do we all have to loose before the Kool aid drinkers figure out that Obamacare is the poison in the free drinks ? It disgusts me to see the idiot repbublicans not all standing up and screaming that this law is going to turn our economy and whole country into the ussr of the 1960s. Why are our old veterans the only ones with a backbone ?
FTA: Mr. Obama contends that one party controlling one chamber of the legislature doesn´t have the unilateral right to decide what gets funded and what doesn´t. Why oh Why don´t Republicans make the point that that is exactly what Obama controlling one branch of government wants to do. He want´s to be the only one deciding how money is spent, cutting down the military, the veterans, the parks, medicare etc to fund his dependents, Acorn, Obamaphones, food stamps endless meddlesome bureaucracy etc. I think a good way to highlight this would be a bill deducting the amount of the stimulus spending from the continuing resolution. That trillion now goes in every year. While they are at it deduct the 10% automatic increase each year. The private sector that has to pay it is stagnant at best with many going out of business altogether and unemployment soaring! No wonder Harry Reid refuses to pass any budget and discuss this. They are making out like bandits and the Washington DC area is about the only part of the country that is prospering. Edwards was right there are two americas. The public vs the private sector!
It is tragic that we have to fight other Republicans harder than we do democrats. If these establishment types had the answers and the strategic smarts, we wouldn´t be in this mess. So along comes some new blood with better ideas and the resolve it takes to see them through and they are the bad guys? The people know who is ruining this country. It is the political class in Washington DC. if Heritage Action takes the message to the people and leaves the usual players out of the loop, the tide will turn in favor of conservative ideas. We are not stupid out here in fly over country and we are informed. Bad news for the cronyism running rampant in Washington DC.
If you are reluctant to give money to Republicans, I would enthusiastically recommend giving a donation to Heritage Action. Since I´ve been going to events where Ed Fulner/and others from Heritage have been the guest speakers, I am encouraged that we can turn this "ship of state" around.
Anyone who has ever been on a large ship coming into port knows that maneuvering a cumbersome vessel into a berth at a pier takes more than one action of just pulling up to its "parking" space like a car can do. Just to get the ship close to the pier takes a lot of "forward" and then "backward" starts and stops of the engines.
#5, buck up. I´ll bet you know a lot about WWII - either from reading or from experience. The invasion of Normandy(Operation Overlord) was a huge undertaking and the actual date depended on a full moon. June 5, 1944, was the originally scheduled date, but early the June 1944 weather conditions were clearly unsuitable. "On 5 June, Eisenhower´s chief meteorologist (Group Captain J.M. Stagg) forecast a brief improvement for 6 June." And the rest is history.
Michael Needham may just be a modern-day Captain Stagg.
#15, I appreciate your thoughts but your analogy I think is way off. Unlike Captain Stagg, the GOP has had clear skies since 1994 yet they still get fooled when the statists very slowly perform the Penn and Teller cups and balls trick for the second time using clear cups and florescent orange balls BOTH times. Now the Marxists in charge no longer need to fool anyone. They know they can and do get away with whatever they want whenever they want. I´m surprised you haven´t yet realized that. Read Mein Kampf, Das Kapital and the Communist Manifesto along with Rules for Radicals. Those Captain Stagg´s have been around for a long, long time totally ignored by the GOP, not to mention Justice Roberts and the "conservative" Weekly Standard. Being the Bible thumping, gun toting hater that I am, I believe what God promised at the end of Romans chapter one. Those promises are going to continue to be fulfilled because as a nation, we are knee deep in that chapter´s hooplah, and if you notice chapter 2 verse one, Paul´s talking to other Christians. Unfortunately, that´s the most important clear cups and balls trick the nation is ignoring.
The Tea Party has already won, even if Boehner and Juan McLame sell out.
A few months from now when the ACA system is a laughingstock, except nobody is laughing about the half-billion or so dollars that seems to have gone missing, who is going to be able to say "I told you so"?
It won´t be any Democrat or RINO. And most deliciously, it will be the current media demonization of the Tea Party that will help people vividly remember who tried to stop the trainwreck.
Technicians in the Washington area raced up to a month-end deadline set by the Obama administration to make the troubled federal insurance website work for a majority of users, but officials acknowledged they still faced a raft of problems that could take weeks or more to fix. By Saturday evening, technicians completed a major hardware upgrade, adding computing, storage and database capacity to their data center, said one person familiar with the situation. "There was a big install and it worked," the person said. Contractors believe the upgrades will improve the system´s performance and let it handle more visitors, but the person
The once-sleepy town of Williston sits on the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri rivers in the US state of North Dakota. Five years ago, Williston had a population of 12,000 and was slowly dying on its feet – an agricultural hub marked out from the plains only by the grain silos that stand silhouetted against the big North Dakota skies. The fall-out from a brief oil boom in the mid-1980s had left the town with sky-high debts and a main street filled with empty shops and peeling facades. Young people looking for jobs skipped town at the first opportunity. Today, Williston is
The CIA used a secret base at Guantanamo Bay nicknamed ´Penny Lane´ to turn some of al-Qaeda´s most dangerous terrorists into double agents, US officials have admitted.Inmates languishing under Guantanamo Bay´s harsh regime were offered cash rewards, "hotel" style rooms and even pornography if they agreed to help the CIA track down and kill fellow al-Qaeda operatives. Instead of Guantanamo´s spartan cells, they would be transferred to cottages equipped with private kitchens, showers and televisions, as well as their own patio. A handful then signed agreements to work for the CIA, under which they were released and told to hook up once
DALLAS - A winter storm system blamed for at least 10 fatal accidents in the West and Texas threatens to dampen the Thanksgiving holiday for millions of Americans traveling this week.Nearly 300 American Airlines and American Eagle flights were canceled in and out of Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport on Monday due to the weather, spokeswoman Laura Masvidal said, mirroring disruptions at the air hub a day earlier. Some of the country´s busiest airports - New York, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Boston and Charlotte, N.C. - could see big delays. Icy roads led to hundreds of accidents and at least 10 deaths, half
As he climbed the political heap, a young Barack Obama roused audiences with promises to unite the nation. He was a Senate candidate in 2004 when he told the Democratic national convention, “There is not a liberal America and a conservative America. There is a United States of America.” In 2007, he declared early in his presidential run that “I don’t want to pit red America against blue America. I want to be the president of the United States of America.” A year later, after he won the Iowa caucus, he promised, “We are not a collection of red states and blue
Remember President Barack Obama´s mother? Though the airwaves currently echo with his vow "If you like your plan . . ." I keep remembering Obama´s account of his mother being denied coverage by her insurance company as she lay dying of cancer. The moving and infuriating story was a staple on the 2008 campaign trail. His mother had insurance, he explained, but when she came down with cancer, her insurance company claimed her disease was a "pre-existing condition" and refused to pay for her treatment. In a debate with Sen. John McCain, Obama said: "For my mother to die of cancer
Lawmakers began reacting late Saturday to news of an historic agreement that freezes key parts of Iran´s nuclear program. Here are excerpts from statements responding to the deal: House Majority Leader Eric I. Cantor (R-Va.):"While I await specific details of the interim agreement, I remain concerned that this deal does not adequately halt Iran´s enrichment capabilities. Numerous U.N. Security Council resolutions have called for the full suspension of Iran´s nuclear activities, so it is troubling that this agreement still permits the Iranians to continue enriching. It is critical that distrust but verify be the guiding principle with which we approach
WASHINGTON — On a sultry day in late August, a dozen staff members of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services gathered at the agency’s Baltimore headquarters with managers from the major contractors building HealthCare.gov to review numerous problems with President’s Obama’s online health insurance initiative. The mood was grim. Henry Chao, a 19-year Medicare agency veteran with no formal background in software engineering, was eventually left with day-to-day management of the president’s signature initiative.
At 9 a.m. on Aug. 22, a team of federal health officials sat down in a Baltimore conference room with at least a dozen employees of CGI Federal, the company with the main contract to build the online federal health insurance marketplace. For six weeks, the federal officials overseeing the project had become increasingly worried that CGI was missing deadlines, understaffing the work and overstating its progress. As the meeting began, one of the officials reminded the CGI employees that HealthCare.gov was “the president’s number one priority,” assured them that the discussion would be a “blame-free zone,” and then bored in.
Fear swept through Borough Park, Brooklyn, as soon as the news got out: A young man was randomly assaulted by strangers early Friday morning, and the attack was possibly part of the so-called Knockout Game. Four men were arrested, but on Friday night only one was charged and the others were released. The attack added to a growing log of reports of such crimes in the Northeast and beyond. Young assailants were randomly picking unlucky targets and trying to knock them out with just one punch. Yet police officials in several cities where such attacks have been reported said that the “game” amounted
The extremely peculiar rules governing the United States Senate just got a little less peculiar. After a historic vote yesterday, it will now take 51 votes — a simple majority — for most presidential nominations to be approved by the 100-member Senate. One senator responded with outrage to the idea. The American people, he roared, “don’t expect .?.?. for one party — be it Republican or Democrat — to change the rules in the middle of the game.” His name is Barack Obama. Sen. Obama spoke those words in 2005 about a Republican proposal to do something very much like
President Obama held an off-the-record meeting with MSNBC hosts and liberal pundits on Thursday, POLITICO has learned.Present at the meeting: MSNBC´s Ed Schultz and Lawrence O´Donnell, Washington Post economics blogger Ezra Klein, Mother Jones Washington bureau chief David Corn, Talking Points Memo editor and publisher Josh Marshall, ThinkProgress editor-in-chief Judd Legum, Atlantic senior editor Garance Franke-Ruta, Salon political writer Brian Beutler and Fox News contributor Juan Williams. The participants agreed to an off-the-record classification for the meeting, though sources familiar with President Obama´s remarks said that Williams later appeared on Fox News and cite some of the president´s remarks, which he
President Obama will cast growing income inequality and a decline in economic mobility as a “fundamental threat to the American dream” during a speech Wednesday in Washington. The speech will serve as an early preview for next year’s State of the Union address, according to a White House official, who said Obama would focus much of his energy over the next three years on the issue. “The decisions we make over the next few years will determine whether or not our children will grow up in an America where, if you work hard, you can get ahead,” the official said.
Good stuff from Jonathan Turley at today’s House hearing on executive power, although I regret that I couldn’t find a more user-friendly format for you to watch. There’s no compilation clip; you’ll have to make do with the C-SPAN embed by fast-forwarding to the time cues I give you and being patient while the vid buffers (and buffers, and buffers).(Snip)That brings us to point two: Even if Congress can’t stop Obama, the courts can. The problem there, though, says Turley, is that O and the DOJ have argued successfully in many cases that no one has standing to sue him
Bill Clinton, the cliché goes, was the first black president, no matter his skin color. That being the case, Barack Obama is not the first black president, or the first African-American president, if you prefer, but the first hippie president. Clinton’s southern background and lifestyle were indeed more typically black, just as Obama’s was more typically hippie. And we’re not just talking about the “Choom gang” here, scarfing “Maui Wowie” on the sands of Oahu. We’re talking about all of it, the whole multi-culti-missing-white-mother-vanished-Kenyan-father-anti-imperialist-America-is-always-the-enemy-and-don’t-you-forget-it-nine-yards. And like most hippie culture as I knew and experienced it, it wasn’t about “peace and love.” Not
During a presentation at the White House in which President Barack Obama touted the benefits of the Affordable Care Act, the president declared that his signature health care reform law was not going to be repealed. This assertion led his administration members, his staff, and audience members to rise from their seats and give the president a standing ovation. Obama said that ACA opponents’ alternative to the health care reform law is to champion repeal and going back to the health care delivery system status quo ante. He specifically cited Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) who he said was asked directly for
A woman has revealed how difficult it is to eat healthily and stay full when living off an average food stamp budget. Melinda Moulton, from Huntington, Vermont, was one of 200 people to take part in the 3Squares Challenge, which saw her living for a week on just $36 worth of food, or around $1.71 a meal. Opting to try and eat as healthily as possible, Ms Moulton resorted to cheap foods like yogurt for breakfast, two handfuls of peanuts for lunch and lentil stew for dinner, all of which left her unsatisfied.´I don´t know how people do it,´ said
[Video] President Obama on Wednesday declared that addressing income inequality would be the focus of “all” of the White House’s efforts “for the rest of my presidency.” In a sweeping address that touched on raising the minimum wage, investing in infrastructure and ending tax breaks for the wealthy, Obama warned that the American economy has become “profoundly unequal,” declaring economic mobility the “challenge of our time.” “The combined trends of increasing inequality and decreasing mobility pose a fundamental threat to the American dream, our way of life, and what we stand for around the globe,” he said in an hour-long
Just over two weeks ago, MSNBC host Martin Bashir delivered a harsh piece of commentary that culminated in the suggestion that someone should “s-h-i-t” in former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin‘s (R-AK) mouth. Bashir offered an abject apology on his next broadcast, but a chorus of critics continued to demand action against the host. After a reported “vacation” for the host earlier this week, Bashir announced, Wednesday afternoon, that MSNBC and Martin Bashir are parting ways. Here’s the statement from Martin Bashir, via email: After making an on-air apology, I asked for permission to take some additional time out around the Thanksgiving holiday. Upon
Nineteen people stood behind President Obama on stage in the Executive Office Building Tuesday as the president kicked off a new campaign to promote Obamacare. One of those people, a young Florida woman named Monica Weeks, introduced Obama after telling the story of being struck with Crohn´s Disease at age 19 and receiving expensive treatments for several years that were covered by her parents´ health care plan — because Obamacare allowed her to remain on that plan until age 26. Now, Weeks said, she has coverage through a job. "The Affordable Care Act gives young adults who are just starting
CNN host wondered out loud on his show this evening whether the physically unfit Chris Christie could follow the "perfect physical specimen" Barack Obama into the White House: "After the perfect Barack Obama, who´s a perfect physical specimen to many people´s eyes, does it matter?" Morgan asked his guest. "Or is actually somebody very different, someone who´s much more of a regular kind of guy who likes cheeseburgers and beer, but appears to be a straight talker, somebody perhaps more of a straight talker than it appears Barack Obama turned out to be?"
Continued global warming poses a risk of rapid, drastic changes in some human and natural systems, a scientific panel warned Tuesday, citing the possible collapse of polar sea ice, the potential for a mass extinction of plant and animal life and the threat of immense dead zones in the ocean. At the same time, some worst-case fears about climate change that have entered the popular imagination can be ruled out as unlikely, at least over the next century, the panel found. These include a sudden belch of methane from the ocean or the Arctic that would fry the planet, as
Nobody could accuse the press of ignoring the fiasco-on-a-server that is HealthCare.gov. The Obamacare website’s woes are dominating coverage on the network news, the cable talk shows, the blogs and, of course, high-octane websites like POLITICO. But did the press do a good job of covering the Affordable Care Act before the health care exchanges went online—sort of—on Oct. 1? Were we adequately warned of the troubles that were to come? And now that HealthCare.gov’s problems are headline news, is the coverage of it any better? Sure, one can find a few examples of one news outlet or another warning of impending
MSNBC´s Chris Matthews will interview President Barack Obama this Thursday, the network announced Tuesday. The interview is part of Matthews´ "Hardball College Tour," and will take place at American University in Washington, D.C. According to a news release from MSNBC, Matthews, along with university students, will "discuss a variety of topics with the president including voter suppression, healthcare, the decline of confidence in the government and the overall political dysfunction in Washington." On Monday our colleagues Carrie Budoff Brown and Jonathan Allen reported that the White House is launching a coordinated campaign to return attention to why the Affordable Care Act
