An Inauspicious Debut
Weekly Standard, by Michael Astrue

For over a year it has been common knowledge within the Obama administration that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) could not launch its network of health exchanges for the Affordable Care Act in a minimally acceptable way. That knowledge did not stop the HHS publicity machine from constantly assuring the American public that its computer systems would be ready for the first enrollment period.(Snip) HHS also blundered when it built its computer system in violation of the Privacy Act. In short, if you enroll in a health plan through an exchange, family members and recent ex-spouses can

Liberals have a luxury people in the private sector don´t have and couldn´t afford and that´s being judged on intentions, not results. A sane person would demand accountibility for a $600 million expenditure but not in world liberal. I mean hey they´re trying to get the site up and glitches happen to everybody, even Google.

There´s a central reason for this website not working and we´ll never find out what it is but you can be sure it was a forseeable problem by a lot of people and they charged ahead anyway.

It´s just mind-boggling. The website developers responsible for this got fired by Canada last year because they couldn´t meet deadlines after three years of effort. Doesn´t anyone in the government check references anymore, or was it bound to be better than ours because, you know, Canadian nationalized medicine.

Hillary has shown up in our local Ct. paper as THE speaker to be at some event, and she is pictured with a new haircut and a Christian cross on a chain round her neck, smaller than Madonna´s but......... I am ALMOST tempted to attend and ask about Benghazi, but am sure, since partisans are sponsoring her, that I would be booed and ushered from the room. But the question remains: how can a secretary of state with such a horrendous record (mostly most air miles) culminating in unnecessary deaths (while she went off immediately to a wine tasting in the West) even be CONSIDERED for the Presidency. Guess we will have to find some totally unqualified but half Black candidate to run against her?

I´ve been playing, "Where´s Hillary?" forever. Whenever things get tough, she predictably goes into hiding and the press gives her a pass. But in doing so, she gives away her vulnerabilities and the GOP is too stoooopid to call her or the collusive media on it. Here she is, the supposed shoe-in for Prez, completely out of sight during the shutdown, lying low during the negotiations, tucked away during the debt ceiling debate, underground during the snafu-filled healthscare rollout.
Yes, #7...GO! Be a SILENT protester: whip out a small handmade sign that uses liberal words against her: "Hillary SHAME: Benghazi" and then be prepared to respond, "I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and you disagree with this administration somehow you´re not patriotic. We should stand up and say we are Americans and we have a right to debate and disagree with any administration." But try not to screech.

What if the purpose was to bring chaos and destruction to American society as a means of escorting in a new socialist order to save the day? What if a seriously deranged madman without a past was given the keys to the government by a foolish electorate, and he and his evil cabal then set about to drive it off a cliff, while sensible sat by in stunned disbelief?

This whole thing is surreal.

You can be sure that she´s grooming her flying monkeys, but by 2016 America will be exhausted by the dims´ failures and ready for new approaches. The left knows it could have had this up and running by a computer nerd from Bet Buy´s Geek Squad but wanted the money for their pockets not operating computers.

A surefire way for an IT project to fail is poorly defined and changing requirements.

Blame the obama gang for that.

Obamacare has been incredibly destructive to this country, but you just have to imagine some people in government and the healthcare industry are lining their pockets over this.

The Dems will put up the biggest lefty they can find for 2016. If the Dems and their media allies could prop up the likes of Obama to win the presidency, they could likely put up anyone.

I wouldn´t be surprised to see Hillery flame out again. I keep thinking they will drag out Al Gore again. He´s a bigger lefty than Hillery, imo. Alot of money too.

Why didn´t they just give anyone who couldn´t afford insurance a million dollars?

It would have been more efficient, successful, effective and much cheaper. The uninsured population of the U.S. is less than 634 million, and that only covers the initial roll out of the web site. The ongoing costs of IRS enforcement, ´navigators´, and bureaucrats have not even been considered.

Not to mention the limiting effect it would have on the Federal Government, specifically, the IRS. The freeing effect on the economy and our Republic would be self evident.

Ding, ding ding! #6, nails it. Obama needs the chaos the collapse of Obamacare brings in order to offer single payer which the masses will then gladly accept. If someone came up with real solutions to make Obamacare work, (which will never happen because it is inherently a failed system) Obama would reject those solutions. He needs the system to collapse. Lenin said government health care is the keystone to implementing communism. Let that sink in.

#24, your point is well taken.

This whole health care roll out is costing hundreds of millions (the $634 million website included). Plus all the enforcers, the 16,000 IRS employees, the navigators, etc.

There were about 30 million uninsured, we were always being told. They could have been given insurance through some government program like Medicaid, and the rest of us could have been left alone.

On the eve of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003, Gen. But, as the New York Times recently reported, at least 20 percent of the new enrollees have not paid their premiums. They therefore do not really have insurance. But even for those enrollees paying premiums, having health insurance is not the same thing as getting good health care, or any health care. Casual marijuana use may come with some not-so-casual side effects. For the first time ever, researchers at Northwestern University have analyzed the relationship between casual use of marijuana and brain changes – and found that young adults who used cannabis just once or twice a week showed significant abnormalities in two important brain structures. The study’s findings, to be published Wednesday in the Journal of Neuroscience, are similar to those of past research linking chronic, long-term marijuana use with mental illness and changes in brain development. Dr. Hans Breiter, co-senior study author, said he was inspired to look at the effects of casual

Look, everyone loves Sean Connery, particularly Sean Connery. That’s why he plays Sean Connery in every movie he’s in. People love that Scottish brogue so much, they don’t mind that he has it when he plays Juan Sánchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez, an immortal Spaniard in Highlander. The guy even won an Oscar for playing an Irish cop with a Scottish accent. Talk about sexist double standards: Meryl Streep has to master foreign dialects to get her golden statuettes. Connery just has to show up on time. In economics you devalue a currency by printing too much of it. In film you

Toddlers show racial bias when picking playmates, a study reveals. They also take account of how fairly others behave. Researchers tested the reaction of white 15-month-olds as toys were distributed. Two white adults divided the toys, one equally and the other unequally. Seventy per cent of the toddlers chose to play with the researcher who distributed the toys fairly. But in a second test, when one researcher favoured a white recipient over an Asian one, they picked the ‘fair’ researcher less often, the journal Frontiers in Psychology reports. And the babies are more likely to help those who share the same ethnicity, which is known as

Hank Aaron’s recent comments about the need for America to realize that racism is still very much alive and thriving — only now due to those who wear “neckties and starched shirts” rather than KKK hoods — has sparked an angry backlash and many fans are turning the tables, calling the baseball legend himself a racist. “Hank Aaron is a s*****g piece of [expletive] [racial slur],” one man said in an email to the Atlanta Braves’ front office, one of the teams Mr. Aaron used to play for, CBS News reported. “My old man instilled in my mind from a

Western Washington University sent a questionnaire to students asking them for advice on how the administration could succeed at making sure that in future years, “we are not as white as we are today.” The question notes that WWU’s racial make up does not perfectly reflect the nation at large, and asks students to consider strategies that other universities have used to focus on skin color as the paramount indicator of a student-applicant’s worth. The president of WWU has stated that his explicit goal is to reduce the white population on campus, according to Campus Reform. “I’ve said before and I’ll say it

How do you ensure that you won’t be ostracized, denounced, or fired if you are a media celebrity, captain of industry, or high public official? For some, sexist banter is certainly no problem. Stand-up comedian Bill Maher called Sarah Palin a c–t and a tw-t, but suffered no ill consequences. David Letterman joked on air that Sarah Palin’s 14-year-old daughter had had sex with Alex Rodriguez during a New York Yankees game. There was no downside to that either. President Obama tosses around “sweetie” as he wishes. No problem with that. No one believes Barack could be condescending to women.

When President Obama needed a preacher to fulfill the closing prayer duties at the annual White House Easter Prayer Breakfast, he turned to none other than the Episcopal Church’s first openly gay bishop — who said he was as shocked as anyone at the appointment. The Right Rev. Gene Robinson said in a tweet, accompanied by a photo of Mr. Obama behind a podium at the event: “POTUS ‘preaches’ at the Easter prayer breakfast. Then, out of the blue, asks ME to close with prayer. OMG!” Newsmax said he also emphasized that the words he chose to close the breakfast

WASHINGTON — Former President Jimmy Carter joined fellow Nobel laureates Wednesday in opposing Keystone XL, insisting that approving the pipeline would trigger “more climate upheaval” around the globe. In an open letter to President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry, Carter and the nine other Nobel Peace Prize winners bluntly warned the leaders: “Your decision on the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline will define your climate legacy.” The missive, published as an advertisement in Politico, represents the first time Carter has taken a position on the $5.4 billion project and makes him the first former president to come
