People in Ohio, Michigan and several other states found themselves unable to buy groceries with their food stamp debit-style cards on Saturday, after a routine check by vendor Xerox Corp. resulted in a system failure. Xerox spokeswoman Karen Arena confirmed via email Saturday afternoon that some Electronic Benefits Transfer systems are experiencing temporary connectivity issues. She said technical staff is addressing the issue and expects the system to be restored soon. U.S. Department of Agriculture spokeswoman Courtney Rowe underscored that the outage is not related to the government shutdown. Xerox runs EBT card systems for 17 states and all were

They are, in reality, Affordable Care Act membership cards. Those poor schmucks trying to register for the ACA are going to receive Food Stamps.

The customer in front of me at a grocery store in a small town in northern Michigan was unable to use her "card" and huffed that she supposed she would have to write a check. Forgive me..........I smiled, just a little smile.

1) What percentage of people with EBT cards have disabilities?

2) What percentage of the above people are TRULY INCONVENIENCED? (I.E.- have no other means of paying for food).

Seems like a real scare. The givernment can give you food, and they can take it away. Is that the lesson to be learned from this very strange and unusual computer glitch that has continued for hours?

I was at the grocery store when they announced this every few minutes, the store cleared out in a hurry. Kind of gives you an idea of how many people you are buying groceries for.

Putting aside the welfare state angle for a moment...

Don´t these people, including those with disabilities, have ANY food stores in pantry or fridge? Even a can of beans? Peanut butter? Anything? Are we supposed to believe that all are living hand to mouth to the point where the cupboard is literally bare and they can´t hang on for 12-24 hours?

The problem with all smug pro-EBT moralizing is that common sense precautions and common sense questions are somehow deemed beyond the pale.

My daughter works for the WIC program. Many clients are rude and feel entitled to their money. They have i-phones and manicures and cars and baby equipment that my daughter can´t afford. Another segment of her clientele is Hassidic. EVERY family in that group gets benefits. They deliver a solid voting bloc so they are never challenged.

For the hare (brained) comment: The constitution was not written with a provision for the federal government to provide benevolence payments to some Americans at the expense of other. That was left up to the charity of their fellow man - who knows if they truly need help a lot better than government. If these libtards of today (and 50-60 years ago) truly respected this Republic and its constitution, they would push a constitutional amendment (which would fail) to do this, rather than just ignore the constitution. Thus, they are domestic enemies of the constitution and everyone should remember that at all times.

The context for this little chestnut of racial nastiness was a heated floor debate in the Illinois legislature over a proposed education reform bill. The fireworks started when Democratic Representative Linda Chapa LaVia, who is Hispanic, delivered a speech criticizing charter schools. Ms. Chapa LaVia was no doubt casting aspersions on behalf of teachers unions — who’ve contributed heavily to her campaigns, are bankrupting the state, and don’t much care for competition. How does the Republican Party establishment choose its presidential candidate? Typically, constitutionalists accuse their establishment rivals of being moderate, risk-averse, stubborn old fools who lack faith in conservative principles. But there is another hypothesis -- less soothing, but, at least from an outsider´s bird´s-eye view, more reconcilable with the facts. This hypothesis is that America has reached a stage of progressive soft despotism in which the only important family feud in national politics is between the fundamentally
