We Gave Iran an Antique as a Token
of Goodwill. Only Problem? It’s Fake.

Sometimes an ancient artifact symbolizes more than its admirers necessarily imagine. Take for example the silver griffin that was returned by the United States to Iran as a gesture of respect and—at least according to tea-leaf readers—a sign of an emerging thaw between the two nations. There’s only one problem: It’s a fake. Not only is it a fake, it’s a bad fake. The saga of the griffin, from its production to its much-touted return to Iranian President Rouhani during his recent visit to New York, demonstrates how fakers of ancient art fool the gullible wealthy with the connivance of museums

Hilarious! The joke we played on Iran- hahahah! Only Steve Martin could have come up with something better. Iran! What a dupe!

Well, what did they expect from a nation that gives a huge plastic "Play Skool" reset button to the second largest power on earth (as a token of good will) and to the very Queen of England, a digital music player with hip-hop and rag jazz on it. It´s like the Øbama´s are the Beverly Hillbillies of the modern world.

For crying out loud, even State and Homeland Security are involved. This is so hilarious

FTA:
Most improbable are three funnels, two on the sides coming out of the body below the wings and one that protrudes painfully from the creature’s rear end. The griffin-as-saxophone design...

Another FTA:
It looks crude and absurd and should have led the buyer to ask what sort of nonsense was being pushed on her.

and, a final FTA:
Gullibility is an essential human instinct. We want to believe, sometimes so badly that we close our eyes to just how fake or stolen an artifact is. The reality of the artifact itself—and hence true value—is always secondary to the strength of the desire...

All sorts of parallels here, like an idiot pushing an absurd health care disaster and the LoFo´s acceptance.

And, of course, what a laughingstock we´ve been led into being.

The Iranians knew it was a fake because they made the fake in the first place to sell to those unsuspecting westerners.

The Americans determined it was a fake and unwound the collectors buy.

Obama, knowing it was a fake, gave it to the Iranians as a gift.

The Iranians waited until the gift bearers left before laughing out loud at the joke of the fake. They will maybe coat it with dirt and "age" it a little before unloading it again on some unsuspecting moneyed collector. Oh, and maybe they will disguise it by cutting off that protruding "poot amplifier".

Fears that high-speed traders have been rigging the U.S. stock market went mainstream last week thanks to allegations in a book by financial author Michael Lewis, but there may be a more serious threat to investors: the increasing amount of trading that happens outside of exchanges. Some former regulators and academics say so much trading is now happening away from exchanges that publicly quoted prices for stocks on exchanges may no longer properly reflect where the market is. A triumphant President Barack Obama declared Tuesday his signature medical insurance overhaul a success, saying it has made America´s health care system ´a lot better´ in a Rose Garden press conference. But buried in the 7.1 million enrollments he announced in a heavily staged appearance is a more unsettling reality. Numbers from a RAND Corporation study that has been kept under wraps suggest that barely 858,000 previously uninsured Americans – nowhere near 7.1 million – have paid for new policies and joined the ranks of the insured by Monday night.
