Here´s the BBC news report (above) on the ferocious speech by new MI5 chief Andrew Parker about terrorists taking advantage of the Snowden leaks. It carries the byline of BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner. It begins: MI5 chief Andrew Parker warns of Islamist threat to UK public Thousands of Islamist extremists in the UK see the British public as a legitimate target for attacks, the director general of MI5 has warned. [Snip] Now it´s time for Gardner to mention, as we did in our report this morning, that the Snowden files were published by the Guardian, despite pleas from

The terrorists have taken advantage of free nations welcoming them into their population. Snowden´s leaks are trivial in comparison.

President Barack Obama delivered a landmark speech in his presidency Tuesday night, throwing down the gauntlet to congressional Republicans by threatening to implement policies without their help whenever they refuse to ´make progress together´ with him. ´America does not stand still--and neither will I,´ Obama warned in his State of the Union address. ´So wherever and whenever I can take steps without legislation to expand opportunity for more American families, that´s what I´m going to do.´ The president outlined more than a dozen initiatives that he plans to kick-start without appealing to Capitol Hill. They include modest moves on infrastructure

New Orleans remains under a state of emergency this morning as temperatures begin to drop and the city braces for what Mayor Mitch Landrieu described as potentially the worst winter weather to hit southeast Louisiana in 25 years. "These winter storms can be unpredictable with unfamiliar conditions to our area," he said Monday. Tuesday´s precautions were predicated by dozens of motor vehicle crashes that occurred Friday evening when ice formed on roadways and bridges. Landrieu said emergency responders were anticipating as much as a quarter-inch of ice to form Tuesday that could cause widespread power outages and create dangerous driving

From Chicago and Minneapolis in the north to the Gulf Coast, Texas and Georgia in the south, 20 states are battening down the hatches as a once-in-a-generation winters storm brings record lows which forecasters are calling ´potentially paralyzing´ and ´crippling´. The second polar vortex in the space of one month--a mass of Arctic air shooting southward--is forecast to move through the U.S. South on Tuesday, bringing snow, freezing rain and high winds as bitter cold temperatures continue in the Midwest, according to the National Weather Service. Over the next two days temperatures will range from the teens to below zero,

President Barack Obama will deliver his sixth State of the Union address Tuesday night, threatening to ignore Congress through a series of executive actions designed to do an end-run around the legislative branch of government. When he uncorks the evening´s carefully manicured rhetoric, it will be a history-dripping stemwinder delivered in a setting that boasts all the pageantry of a royal funeral. But in the age of tweets and 90-second cable news interviews, fewer and fewer Americans pay attention to lengthy policy speeches. State of the Union: time for Republicans

The State of the Union is one of the great fixtures in the US political calendar, when all eyes focus on the President--and his special guests in the First Lady´s box above. However, with Mr Obama largely neutered by Obamcare woes, implacable Republican opposition in Congress and sinking approval ratings, arguably of much greater interest will be the Republican response, which is delivered in a televised address just a few minutes after the President stops speaking. This year the honour has gone to a Congresswoman, Cathy McMorris Rodgers, who is the highest-rank Republican woman in the House of Representatives, but

The number of people enrolled in private health insurance under Obamacare has soared by more than one-third in recent weeks to around 3 million, according to government data released on Friday. Marilyn Tavenner, administrator of the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), announced the preliminary tally in a blog posting. She forecast that enrollment through new federal and state health insurance marketplaces would continue to grow in coming weeks as a public outreach campaign accelerates. The new data adds to evidence that President Barack Obama´s administration has turned the corner on enrollment after a botched October 1 launch.

President Obama has been losing his TV audience — literally. With the State of the Union proving ever less entrancing for viewers, the White House is desperate to turn the speech into a multiday event in an effort to bolster interest in Mr. Obama’s policies, even if people don’t tune in to hear his words. With online question-and-answer sessions, a “virtual road trip” scheduled for Friday and a presidential video, the White House is determined to spread Mr. Obama’s message beyond Tuesday night’s hourlong address. “Literally, the conversation never ends,” said Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Research Center’s Internet

WASHINGTON — President Obama plans to sign an executive order requiring that janitors, construction workers and others working for federal contractors be paid at least $10.10 an hour, using his own power to enact a more limited version of a policy that he has yet to push through Congress. The order, which Mr. Obama will highlight in his annual State of the Union address on Tuesday night, is meant to underscore an increasing willingness by the president to bypass Congress if lawmakers continue to resist his agenda, aides said. After a year in which most of his legislative priorities went nowhere,

“Repealing and replacing” Obamacare with market-oriented reforms has been the Republican mantra for years now. If you’re a long-time follower of this space, you know that we’re skeptical that Obamacare will ever be repealed, GOP slogans to the contrary. Today, however, a trio of experienced Senate Republicans—Tom Coburn (Okla.), Richard Burr (N.C.), and Orrin Hatch (Utah)—have put forth the most thoughtful and constructive plan yet developed to repeal and replace Obamacare. The plan seeks to ensure that as many Americans have health coverage as Obamacare does. It’s a proposal grounded in the real-world tradeoffs that all serious reformers must make.

Former Vice President Al Gore raised eyebrows last week when he suggested that “fertility management” was the key to fighting global warming and promoting economic development in poor countries. Gore’s comments drew criticism from free-marketeers who said his remarks amount to “eco-imperialism.” “Gore’s agenda for saving the world from global warming has always included population control,” Myron Ebell, director of global warming and international environmental policy at the free-market Competitive Enterprise Institute, told The Daily Caller News Foundation. “Advocating population control specifically for Africa is just another form of imperialism. Gore’s eco-imperialism is uncomfortably close to the original racist goals of

A year after saying it didn’t matter what sparked the vicious attack on the US diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Hillary Rodham Clinton is calling the incident the “biggest regret” of her stint as secretary of state.“My biggest, you know, regret is what happened in Benghazi,” Clinton told an auto dealers conference in New Orleans on Monday. Clinton didn’t acknowledge any particular blunder in the days or weeks leading up to the 2012 siege that resulted in the deaths of four Americans. Critics blame unmet security requests by the tragic US Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens, who was killed in the attack. Clinton

Deep within the Earth, a fierce molten core is generating a magnetic field capable of defending our planet against devastating solar winds. The protective field extends thousands of miles into space and its magnetism affects everything from global communication to animal migration and weather patterns. But this magnetic field, so important to life on Earth, has weakened by 15 per cent over the last 200 years. And this, scientists claim, could be a sign that the Earth’s poles are about to flip. Experts believe we´re currently overdue a flip, but they´re unsure when this could occur. If a switch happens, we would be exposed

Just a few weeks ago, a State of the Union call for immigration reform would have seemed an exercise in futility. But now, President Obama, who Tuesday night will urge the House to pass new legislation, might have at least an outside chance of getting what he wants. Immigration reform is back. Left for dead countless times in recent months, the effort to overhaul the nation´s immigration system -- and deal with the estimated 12 million immigrants now in the country illegally -- is again on the priority list for Speaker John Boehner and House GOP lawmakers. But there´s a problem,
