Exchange launch turns into
inexcusable mess: Our view

USAToday, by Editorial

Original Article

Over the first four days the new online health insurance exchanges were open last week, more than 8 million people visited them, according to the Obama administration. At the very least, this casts doubt on the Republican claim that Americans hate Obamacare and want it repealed. It seems millions of people desperately want the coverage the law will allow them to get, regardless of their medical histories. Alas, the administration managed to turn the experience for most of those visitors into a nightmare. Websites crashed, refused to load, or offered bizarre and incomprehensible choices. Even though the system was shut down

FTA: At the very least, {the fact that more than 8 million people visited the websites] casts doubt on the Republican claim that Americans hate Obamacare and want it repealed.

Strange conclusion, USA editorial board. Instead, Americans are curious as to WTH is going on. Furthermore, they "love" what they think is true about Obamacare--that it is the next best thing to sliced bread and "free." From what I have read from other articles, visitors have been disenchanted with their online experiences. One in 99 visitors ware actually able to get their applications processed.

Only the government would think this is a great batting average.

The government could mess up a one-car funeral.

Perhaps all the software glitches will eventually put the final nail in the coffin of this bureaucratic nightmare.

Maybe the many visitors are those with individual policies who have gotten letters from their previous carriers cancelling their policies.

Or checking, hope against hope, that maybe they will be the lucky winner of the "free coverage" sweepstakes.

I have a friend who spends a significant portion of his income on health insurance for him and his family dreading that he will have to navigate these exchanges; he´s pretty well-educated, but expects a real mess.

The truly lo-fo uninsured are still waiting for it to be free from Obama´s stash ...

Curious: how many of the exchange users were people forced off their old plans by Obamacare? I´d like to see that stat.

Exactly. A big part of these 8 mil were hoping to get something for nothing. The LoFo´s, LCD (Lowest Common Denominators) and gimmedats (no explanation necessary) have yet to realize there aint no free lunch here for most folks.

One can´t honestly reach the conclusion that people "desperately want" something when it is required by law and noncompliance is subject to IRS penalties.

Pantload.

Lofos might desperately want it -- only because so many of them think this is a freebie -- but I´ll wager that a significant percentage of those eight million were cruising the site out of curiosity, much like they slow down while rolling past a particularly bad traffic accident.

USA Today had to say that, of course, along with that snippy little swipe at the Republicans, before criticizing their favorite pResident.

I´ll say it again; stinkycare will ultimately die the same death as did Prohibition. This doesn´t mean we won´t be suffering through it for the next few years. Bathtub gin was nothing compared to the corruption and back-alley shenanigans that are sure to come with stinky´s massive nightmare.

Very bad sign that the HHS folks keep taking the website down. What they are probably doing is just restarting ("bouncing" the UNIX servers). This would explain the poor performance. Massive memory leaks. Bad design, bad code.

FTA: Park said the administration expected 50,000 to 60,000 simultaneous users. It got 250,000. Compare that with the similarly rocky debut seven years ago of exchanges to obtain Medicare drug coverage. The Bush administration projected 20,000 simultaneous users and built capacity for 150,000. That´s the difference between competence and incompetence.

Amen.

Talk about an editorial staff that can´t think critically. Eight million people is less than 3% of the population. Of those, we have no information as to their motivation, but USA today knows that they are desperate to sign up. Perhaps because they thought it was free?

If Obamacare were a rousing success, half the people without health coverage would have signed up. That would be about 25 million, instead of the minuscule number who may have.

Or was it a million people trying to re-visit the site 8 or more times since it keep crashing. Or they got the cost of insurance and figured they got the wrong amount since they thought it was to be cheaper or free and kept re-entering info. Doubt it was 8 million unique users!!

Same as the obamaCare law was a 2,000 page stack waiting in somebody´s desk drawer waiting years for a vote, I also think that some IT folks at HHS had components of the software ready to go (probably legacy code from some other boondoggle.)

"Hey, I´m going to save the gov $100Million. Look at me, Look at me".

Software development is one of the few reality checks left for us in the 21st Century.

Almost all, if not all, of the proponents of PPACA have their health insurance paid by someone else. They tell everyone else how great ACA will be, but these people have zero skin in the game.

If you know what it is like to be denied health insurance because of preexisting conditions, you would like to see what the price tag will be. You see, even if you are guaranteed that you can purchase coverage, you have no idea what the price will be until you go online to find out.

Since you have to sign up to find out what it costs, USA Today infers that you love Obamacare. Now that makes Obama sense.

So what do you do if you are, say, in your 50s, and the bronze coverage is $1,000 per month with a $15,000 deductible and no subsidy? You will be chastised by the great left that you should not have ever been without insurance.

Been there done that.

Everyone forgets about the part of Obamacare that is already been open for much of the time since the law passed, Preexisting Conditions Insurance Pool. Once projected to serve 650,000 people, the enrollment finally broke 100,000 people in Jan 2013. And at an average cost to the government of $32,108 per person per year, these folks are desperate to sign up. And even among these folk, the last numbers I saw showed that 27% of the funds went to 2% of the enrollees. This is the core problem with government health care, there is no limit to what the government will take from the masses to help the few. In a community of individuals, there are fundraisers to help those with special needs. And the doctor and hospitals also kick in to help. We don´t want to replace this with a government controlled program.

What nobody seems to realize is that with a few exceptions like illegal aliens, every single one of us is going to be required to have health insurance. If we do not, we will be forced to pay a monetary penalty.

I think the only reason the number of people checking the exchanges was so low is that most citizens have no idea that the purchase of health insurance is not optional. If they work part time, if they work for a business with fewer than 50 employees, if they have been dropped from their spouse´s plan, they will still be required to have health insurance, and thanks to Obamacare, it now costs much more than it used to. A big surprise is coming for a huge number of people in this country.

The only way that this thing can even get off the ground is with a massive infusion of cash. If they don´t get their debt ceiling raise, look for confiscation of pension funds and bank accounts. These idiots are desperate.

Not to mention that contrary to USA Today´s belief, these desperate millions don´t want the coverage because they think it´s wonderful, but because if they don´t get Obamacare, they´ll be fined or thrown in jail for not paying the fines.

The answer is so easy--delay it for a year. If as the previous poster says, there is already coverage for pre-existing conditions, there is no reason not to. And here´s a quick fix for the whole problem. Use a carrot, not a stick, to get people to buy insurance. Let people buy their own insurance with tax deductible dollars. Let them buy insurance on a national market. Let the marketplace provide low-cost products, like high-deductible catastrophic insurance for those who want it. Encourage the use of health savings accounts. Have a pool, similar to the guaranty funds, to make it possible for people with pre-existing conditions to get coverage. Require companies to provide coverage if there is no gap in having insurance and only penalize those who let their policies lapse until they are sick.

It was the most highly publicized debut ever and it was ON THE INTERNET! What in the hell did they expect . . . I´d guess even a significant number of people from outside the country were looking just out of curiosity. All that traffic created a natural demand denial of service attack.

Now, however, it´s days later, the DDOS is gone and it still doesn´t work. Clearly the software is not up to snuff. That tells you all you need to know about government run businesses. It will be interesting to see how this gets blamed on the Republicans.

One thing is sure it is much easier for a non citizen to vote in a US election than for a citizen to access a government program! I hear that this program is crashing in part because of the effort to identify the applicants. Perhaps we could get lessons from the kid who snuck onto a Delta flight to Las Vegas on applying for Obamacare!

A visitor visits the site and cannot complete the process.
They revisit. System is down - they receive ‘come back later’ message.
They revisit. System is still down.
They revisit. System cannot complete application.
They revisit. Crucial information is not available.
They revisit. Cannot enter their information.
They revisit. Cannot access insurance prices.
They revisit. System states that it is down, again.
They give up.

Divide 8,000,000 by this scenario, add in the curious and the hordes of reporters repeatedly checking out the site, and how many true applicants do you really have?

The actual number of ´desperate´ applicants must be embarrassingly small.

Two years before the Boston Marathon bombing, the Russian government concealed key information on one of the killers that might have thwarted the attack, a new report charges.Kremlin officials intercepted a phone conversation in which Tamerlan Tsarnaev discussed Islamic jihad with his mother, but they withheld the information from the FBI, according to the U.S. inspector general report that comes as the one-year anniversary of the bombing approaches. Had the FBI been privy to the red-flag phone call, it would have prompted the bureau to take an extensive look at Tsarnaev, according to The New York Times. “Had they known what the

President Barack Obama is planning to sign two new executive actions aimed at narrowing the wage gap between men and women Tuesday, even as the Obama White House pays its female staffers less than men.The first executive action will be an order banning federal contractors from retaliation against employees who disclose or ask about their wages, according to reports. His other executive action will require federal contractors to submit data to the government about their employees compensation by sex and race. On Tuesday — the day advocates have labelled “Equal Pay Day” to symbolize the amount of time women have to

Fears that high-speed traders have been rigging the U.S. stock market went mainstream last week thanks to allegations in a book by financial author Michael Lewis, but there may be a more serious threat to investors: the increasing amount of trading that happens outside of exchanges. Some former regulators and academics say so much trading is now happening away from exchanges that publicly quoted prices for stocks on exchanges may no longer properly reflect where the market is. And this problem could cost investors far more money than any shenanigans related to high frequency trading. When the average investor, or even

It’s good Gov. Cuomo understands New York has a problem with cigarette smuggling. Too bad he has yet to figure out what’s really driving the problem of illegal smokes: our high tobacco taxes.Just days after a key report found New York has the highest percentage of illegal cigarettes of any state, the governor announced the creation of a new “strike force” meant to crack down.Teams from 13 state, local and federal agencies, he said, are joining to stop “the influx of counterfeit and untaxed tobacco products into New York” and nab smugglers who “evade the law and rob the state

After his health-care law surpassed the low-ball enrollment target of 7 million, President Obama staged a Rose Garden rally and zinged doubters: “Armageddon has not arrived.” At least he did not declare: “Mission Accomplished.”The country is years from knowing whether Obama’s overhaul of the health-care system fulfills the promise of delivering universal coverage. While large numbers of Americans have found the program very advantageous, including people who were formerly uninsured, many others have been forced to change plans or change doctors — contrary to Obama’s repeated promises.Obama tacitly admits the unintended consequences every time he waives a deadline or mandate in

A triumphant President Barack Obama declared Tuesday his signature medical insurance overhaul a success, saying it has made America´s health care system ´a lot better´ in a Rose Garden press conference. But buried in the 7.1 million enrollments he announced in a heavily staged appearance is a more unsettling reality. Numbers from a RAND Corporation study that has been kept under wraps suggest that barely 858,000 previously uninsured Americans – nowhere near 7.1 million – have paid for new policies and joined the ranks of the insured by Monday night.

The author of the Twilight of Abundance, David Archibald, sent an email a few days ago, saying “there is a whole new world coming.” Archibald, who’s an Australian, warns in his book that the world is running out of food, energy and security. Where he differs from Malthus, however, is in arguing that the shortages are the consequence of policy, rather than the inherent limitations of the universe. The world is doing everything it can to run in the opposite direction of abundance because we think we have too much. The West dreads warmer weather, even though warmer weather might

After presenting at the Academy Awards this year, Kim Novak didn’t want to leave her house. The Hitchcock screen siren, 81, was too humiliated to venture from her home near the Rogue River in Oregon. She read the cruel posts and Internet snark about her appearance, and it was just too much. “It got to me like it gets kids and teenagers,” she told the Associated Press. The “Vertigo” actress, considered one of the great beauties in her day, posted a note on her Facebook wall Thursday, acknowledging that she’d gotten fat injections in her face and addressing her halted

The White House is going to war with another fox — and this time, it’s personal. The Wall Street Journal reports that a red fox has been causing chaos around the White House, tripping security alarms, digging up Michelle’s garden and distracting the president from his duties. The Secret Service won’t give any details about how often the fox trips the White House’s obviously sophisticated security alarms, but rest assured, officials say, they’re watching. President Obama was apparently “stunned” to see the fox roaming freely down the oft-photographed White House colonnade, home to the world’s shortest, but most dramatic, outdoor strolls. A group of seven multiracial Washington and Lee University (W&L) students are demanding the school remove all Confederate flags from campus and "acknowledge" General Robert E. Lee´s "dishonorable side." According to the Roanoke Times, "seven multiracial students, calling themselves ´The Committee,´" have also demanded the school "acknowledge and apologize for participating in chattel slavery." They want recognition of "Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the undergraduate campus" and an end to "neo-Confederates" marching across campus "to the Lee Chapel on Lee-Jackson Day." The students say they will "engage in civil disobedience" if their demands are not met by September 1st. They added: "The

For Hillary Clinton, having her own baby grandchild to kiss on the campaign trail, could be one of the biggest boosts to her possible presidential election campaign. Although the former Secretary of State and First Lady has not said if she will run in 2016, the arrival of her first grandchild will soften her image, analysts have said. While Chelsea only revealed her pregnancy on Thursday, supporters of her mother have already started cooing over a possible baby in the White House. With the Clintons having a near-royal status in the U.S., the announcement of a new arrival due this fall has sent

GREENSBORO, Ga. — Golf holes the size of pizzas. Soccer balls on the back nine. A mulligan on every hole. These are some of the measures — some would say gimmicks — that golf courses across the country have experimented with to stop people from quitting the game. Golf has always reveled in its standards and rich tradition. But increasingly a victim of its own image and hidebound ways, golf has lost five million players in the last decade, according to the National Golf Foundation, with 20 percent of the existing 25 million golfers apt to quit in the next few years. People under 35 have especially spurned the game, saying it takes too

Hi, everybody. For millions of Americans, this time of year holds great meaning. Earlier this week, we hosted a Passover Seder at the White House, and joined Jewish families around the world in their re-tellings of the story of the Exodus and the victory of faith over oppression. And this Sunday, Michelle, Malia, Sasha, and I will join our fellow Christians around the world in celebrating the Resurrection of Christ, the salvation he offered the world, and the hope that comes with the Easter season. These holy days have their roots in miracles that took place long ago. And yet, they still inspire us, guide us, and strengthen us today. They remind us of our

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Thursday that a family of dissident ranchers and their supporters in his home state of Nevada are ´domestic terrorists,´ citing this week´s standoff with the federal government´s Bureau of Land Management. Cliven Bundy has refused to pay grazing fees for land where his hundreds of cattle roam every day. The land is owned by the federal government, which says he owes more than $1 million. Bundy, however, insists that since his family has been using the land since the 1870s, Uncle Sam can´t collect the grazing fees. A tense standoff developed this week after

To "honor the dignity and work of immigrants," Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi helps Bishop Marc Andrus wash the feet of two children Thursday at Saint John the Evangelist Episcopal Church in San Francisco. Pelosi also used the occasion to talk about passing HR15 - bipartisan immigration legislation that her office says would "reduce the deficit by nearly $1 trillion, secure our borders, unite our families, protect our workers and provide an earned pathway to citizenship." The Democratic leader´s ceremony coincides with Pope Francis´ similar ceremony in Rome to mark Holy Week.

WASHINGTON--Rushing to an afternoon vote last month, Sen. Ted Cruz hopped the underground tram to the U.S. Capitol from his office across the street. The Texan planted his black ostrich cowboy boots in the middle of the small subway car without getting so much as a nod from the other senators--Republican or Democrat--amiably chatting or huddled in their seats. Mr. Cruz finds himself standing alone a lot these days. His response to the cold shoulders: "The establishment despised Ronald Reagan" before he became president, "but the people loved him." For the 43-year-old Republican, the Reagan name illuminates his political life´s

Imagine a vendor on the National Mall, selling burgers and dogs, who hasn’t paid his rent in 20 years. He refuses to recognize his landlord, the National Park Service, as a legitimate authority. Every court has ruled against him, and fines have piled up. What’s more, the effluents from his food cart are having a detrimental effect on the spring grass in the capital. Would an armed posse come to his defense, aiming their guns at the park police? Would the lawbreaker get prime airtime on Fox News, breathless updates in the Drudge Report, a sympathetic ear from Tea Party Republicans?

Conservative columnist Ann Coulter — who used her talk show platform in the last presidential election cycle to campaign hard for former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney — has taken up the mantra once again, calling on Republicans to give the failed White House bidder another shot in 2016. She made the suggestion during a discussion on Sean Hannity’s radio show while speaking of her new book, “Never Trust a Liberal Over 3-Especially a Republican.” Ms. Coulter also addressed the question of Mr. Romney’s shortcomings by saying that his 2012 loss wasn’t entirely his fault. “I think too much blame, not only in this
