Couple has near-fatal 4-day hike
after getting kicked out of Big Bend

Houston Chronicle, by Craig Hlavaty

A couple vacationing in Big Bend last week was kicked out of the national park when the federal government shut down. It led to them getting dangerously lost on foot for four days in West Texas and living off of water from a spring they found, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. As Cathy Frye, 43, of North Little Rock, Ark., and her husband, Ricky Lee McFarland, 58, were leaving the park Oct. 1, an official at the national park suggested that they relocate to the neighboring 300,000-acre Big Bend Ranch State Park to continue their vacation. The official gave them a map of

If they had died it would have been just another "bump in the road" to Zippy.

If they had died I am sure it would have the fault of the Republicans... It rained yesterday--darn Republicans. Sun going down earlier each day--mean Republicans.

Reality doesn´t matter--it´s just what the media says that matters. Sick.

A good solid push to evict all federal workers from inside the state´s borders might be a good response to this kind of federal bullying. There has always been a question of who actually owns the land within a state´s borders. Perhaps a good effort toward clarification might be constructive right now.

I know that the state of Arizona is ready and willing to reopen and fund the Grand Canyon. And we have plenty of people looking for jobs that will be available to accept more permanent employment, if that´s what it takes.

I read the article. Hard to blame their problems on Zippy when they were totally unprepared for the kind of hiking they undertook.

Obama is like a child who wants to take his ball and go home when he does not get his way.

When a President of the United States acts like a child there are ramifications.

Whatever happened to personal responsibility? They were unprepared and obviously knew nothing about hiking. Put the blame where it belongs-with this couple themselves. Not everything is the government´s fault.

Of course they were unprepared, they´re part of the MFM. She´s a reporter for our local rag and he´s a photographer.

Prolly thought Zippy would send in SEALs to rescue them.

That is VERY rugged country. I grew up one county to the east of Brewster County where Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park are located. This couple is very lucky they survived to tell their tale. Maybe they´ll prepare more skillfully next time. This one can´t be blamed on the shutdown.

You can spend a week there and never see another human being. It is the most remote National Park. I love the place and have since I was 3 years old (53 years). I know it better than most of the rangers. The place has undergone a lot of change in that time. Mainly by way of paved road access. The sky is dimmer from coal fired power plants in Mexico but some days one can still see all the way to the back of one´s own head. This family is very fortunate. The nearest hospital is 120 miles away. The Big Bend country is the love of my heart. It takes in much more than the park.

The Chihuahuan High Desert is no place to be wandering around for 4 days without food or water.

Of course, with the reporter and photographer´s involvement, this whole incident could have been faked. Reporters do love to enhance the emotional impact of their stories.

I don´t know. They were prepared for where they were (I don´t know anything about the area) but was it possible that where they ended up was a lot rougher than where they were originally?

Maybe they just thought it was the same sort environment and believed their water, etc. was sufficient.

I don´t see how this is anyones fault but their own. Could have gone home, could have gotten a better map, could have not taken their surroundings for granted and used common sense. No trouble after the fact locating a reporter willing to write them up as victims though... At any rate, thankfully they are home safe now, no doubt enjoying reruns of Survivorman on their DVR.

They were relocated and were not familiar with the new park. They were unpaired but then they might not have known what to prepare for. People are being inconvenienced at the least and endangered at the worst. And Obsma doesn´t mind.

Their ignorance and lack of preparation after their change of plans cannot be denied as the major part of their problem. However, the article indicates that they had been visitors to the Big Bend Nat´l Park for a number of years. They were prepared for that hiking trip.

The closure of the nat´l park, and the suggestion by the official at the nat´l park to go to the state park along with the receipt from that official of a map, could have "suggested" to them that this unexpected change of plans was a simple change of location, and not an entirely different set of circumstances from their original hiking plans. Thankfully, they are alive and recovering after making some very poor choices and learning some dangerous lessons the hard way.

Thankfulness and praise for the rescuers.
Thank the Lord for answered prayers.

If they hadn´t been kicked out of the park, and sent to a rougher park by the "ranger", who was probably a political appointee, they wouldn´t have become lost. If they hadn´t been suggested going to another park, without an adequate map, they might have just gone home.

I´m surprised by the comments and the focus on the individuals. Big Bend Nay´l Park is raw, with over 1200 sq miles and only 5 paved roads. Serious hikers can be out for a week or more. There are no real cities close by. A bureaucrat can´t really "close" Big Bend, only make life difficult for those who spend time in the area. There is something galling to me, even unworldly considering that someone in DC claims the authority to keep me from the Chisos Mountains in my own state.

Before getting to the speech itself, it’s worth noting a few things. When the Democrats passed and Barack Obama signed Obamacare, the majority opposed it. About 56%, in fact. A majority have consistently opposed that law ever since. The Obama administration touted 7 million sign-ups by March 31 as “success.” When that goal appeared to be unreachable, the administration suggested that maybe 5 or 6 million would be enough. Now, as if by magic, they have their number. Somehow. All along, the administration has touted false numbers of enrollees. All along, the administration has neglected to admit that Obamacare is

A few months back, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius stated for the record that 7 million Obamacare sign-ups by the end of March would constitute success. She was clear about it. But then February came, and February always stinks. It’s just a lousy month. You’re tired of winter, you’re still miles away from spring, and no one was signing up for Obamacare. That 7 million figure looked totally unreachable. So Sebelius does what every other member of the Obama administration does when confronted with inconvenient facts. She lied. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, criticized last year by a Vatican official for her support of abortion, received a rosary Tuesday from President Obama that was blessed by Pope Francis. Mrs. Pelosi told reporters of the president’s gift after having lunch with Mr. Obama at the White House. The president met with the pope last week at the Vatican. “I was happy to receive a rosary blessed by Pope Francis,” she said. “It means a great deal to me.” Last year, a Vatican official in Rome said that Mrs. Pelosi should be denied communion. “This is a person who obstinately,

A triumphant President Barack Obama declared his signature medical insurance overhaul a success, saying it has made America´s health care system ´a lot better.´ But buried in the 7.1 million enrollments he announced in a heavily staged Rose Garden appearance is a more unsettling reality. Numbers from a RAND Corporation study that has been kept under wraps suggest that barely 858,000 previously uninsured Americans – nowhere near 7.1 million – have paid for new policies and joined the ranks of the insured by Monday night. Others were already insured, including millions who lost coverage when their existing policies were suddenly

A RAND study pours buckets of cold water on the Obama administration’s claims that it has nearly reached 7 million sign-ups for Obamacare. The whole point of Obamacare, supposedly, was to insure the uninsured and bend the cost curve down. Those who had insurance were supposed to be able to keep it. Families were supposed to start saving about $2500 a year. If you believed the Obama administration. Reality, according to RAND‘s study, is that the Obama administration’s 7 million figure is deceptive. Supposing 7 million have actually signed up and paid their first premium — which is not a given,

With Chris Christie in deep trouble, Republican poobahs are reportedly looking to Jeb Bush to save their party in 2016. The former two-term governor of Florida speaks fluent Spanish, is a convert to Catholicism, and has high name recognition. Jeb could raise millions of dollars over night by just saying “yes” to running. Despite all this, there are strong reasons Republicans should say no to him. 1. His last name is poison. Let’s face it, if Jeb Bush had the last name of Something Else he would have already run for president in 2008 or 2012. According to a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll registered voters were asked if they would definitely NOT vote for Jeb Bush and 50 percent said they would not.
