I don´t expect America to be perfect, and I know America has made some mistakes. But boy do we know how to correct them. And we will self-correct from the mistake of electing Obama. The anti-American naysayers declare that we are all from somewhere else -- the inherent message being that America was stolen and none of us can lay claim to the land. They say that we invaded what is now America, attacked the Indians, then took their land and livelihoods. We forced them to live in squalid camps. Liberals say that we took their dignity. I admit that the Indians
We will never be able to right all the wrongs of the past. But America is the land of the free - at least until now.
Until the citizens of this great country wake up and realize that the liberals are trying to destroy the freedom our forefathers documented into the constitution and bill of rights, we are in for years of misery and heartache.
Citizens need to vote out the people who hate America as it was - a land of opportunity and freedom for all - and are trying to turn it into a cauldron of hatred and envy. These not so well meaning liberals are radical in their belief they can change human nature.
But worse, they are willing to lie and deceive the very people they want to help - only to hurt them in the outcome.
It is time for America to get behind leaders like Cruz, Paul and Rubio. Rise up America before it is too late.
The 21st century Nazis are knocking on your door. They want to purify America of anyone who disagrees with them. It is not going to be pretty, if this continues down the road BO is taking us.
If mighty Deutschland can "self-correct" from the terrible tragedy of Adolf Schicklgruber, surely America, the world´s "melting pot" and "The Land Of The Free And The Home Of The Brave," can "self-correct" from the horrible mistake of the undocumented Barry Soetoro.
I just read the article but I don´t agree that it will be easy to self correct. The numbers of actual patriots are dying off at a rapid speed, only to be replaced by welfare queens and all on the government dole. There is more of them than there is of "us." America, as we have known it, is over. Just look at the congress. The lone voices of Cruz and Lee are being so drowned out. They cannot do it alone.
#6 says it all. Far too many in this country are not really "American" at all. Either they are immigrants who bring with them a socialist mindset, or mush-skulled "Americans" who have been brainwashed into hating what America has always been. Socialism is a difficult cancer to recover from. In fact, I am not sure there´s a country in the world that has truly gotten rid of socialism once its taken hold. We´ve got a bad case already, and its not looking good.
The American spirit has been whipped out of recent generations by schools and colleges like the one highlighted in Clarice´s blog yesterday. The American´s with spirit are the nut jobs according to homeland security. We also have too many members of our society who are illiterate even though they have spent twelve years or more sitting in government schools. I want to believe we can bounce back as before, there just seem to be so many things we will have to overcome. Do we have the will and the energy, I don´t know.
He speaks of Germany self-correcting, but doesn´t add that it was the Marshal Plan, i.e. our money and our hearts, that put our enemies such as Germany and Japan back on their feet. To their credit, they took our help and ran with it.
Take that a step further. We spend billions on foreign aid to those miscreants that would gladly kill US. In return our leaders do a lousy job taking care of our own injured, widowed and those serving to defend our rights and theirs to live in freedom and self-determination. And those miscreants still want to kill US.
Yes, we can and will self-correct when those who represent(?) US are reduced to their proper place, i.e. Live by the same laws as we do. Are forced to stop making DC a career rather than a passing point in their lives to help US, Are deprived of the right to pass laws that affect only them such as salaries, insider trading, and retirement and health benefits, etc.
Great article. Unrelated to it, something that just occurred to me is that all state schools -- colleges, universities, community colleges -- should be defunded until half the journalism faculties are conservative. Especially in states whose governors are Republican. Pass it on.
I am afraid poster #6 has it right. This is no longer a nation where the majority of the voters are makers, not takers. The leeches outnumber the producers. Remember what Rush said after the election, in a nation of children, Santa Claus wins. Can we really expect a nation of children to vote against Santa Claus? When it comes to giving away taxpayer-funded largess, the ´Rats always have the advantage.
The only fear one still has about the logic in this article is that we could be living in entirely different times where prior wisdom is not extendable to the future. If it were, (then) the Kenyan would not only not be elected, he would not even be a non-trivial contender for the nomination. His astonishing lack of character, worth, achievement for the high office he occupies says that the rules are different. And.. his adversaries have not yet figured out what they are.
Kevin and others like him in the black community such as Dr. Ben Carson, Herman Caine, Allen West, Artur Davis, Mia Love, Tim Scott, and others are going to have to be the loudest voices to be heard over the Al Sharptons, Jesse´s Jacksons, Van Jones, and other black liberals/progressives.
For the most part, black people are not going to listen to the white folks who want them to embrace Christian, conservative values. It´s hard to shed how you were raised, especially when so many blacks have been "schooled" on the Democrat Plantation where they have been cared for. They will, though, get curious about successful fellow blacks and will briefly open their ears to see what they are selling. Unfortunately, when it sounds too hard so many plug their ears again and say "la, la, la, I can´t hear what you are saying."
I agree with some posters that this is too optimistic. The reason is that today, unlike yesterday, there was a sense of national unity. Today, we are balkanized into grievance groups: blacks, gays, women, transgenders, Republicans and Democrats, the latter being the most intransigent polarizing I´ve ever seen.
The American Spirit trounced the lack of civil rights for blacks and other minorities, and it beat back discrimination against gays.
When will it "beat back" the discrimination against Christians? Muslims, Jews, Atheists, secular humanists, and moral cretins get a pass, but Christians have become pariahs in America. Why is that?
When America "self-corrects" this glaring example of religious persecution on our own soil, let alone overseas soil, we can talk more optimistically about righting wrongs.
I also kinda take exception to the Indian perspective here. Those original settlers did try to get along with the Indians and did try to work a deal. It was definitely a cultural divide when it came to things. So let´s not just think we need to take the blame for that one. And while we definitely were wrong to force them to give up land, which came much later, we have self corrected. Native Americans today can if they want enjoy many "free" benefits from the government.
And I´m with #6. Today I´m not feeling very optimistic, and I normally am.
I´d like to believe the author, but two points undermine his optimism:
--History shows that democratic republics flourish for a few centuries, and eventually devolve into totalitarianism. Think of Rome and Julius Caesar, their Obama. The first indication is the appeal to "the people" or "folks"-- in other words, the mob.
--The the mores, traditions that formed the philosophical understanding that sustained this society have been undermined. The ideals of independence and liberty no longer appeal to the majority; now it´s only power that we esteem.
--Our masters have a more widespread and more appealing diversion for us-- the entertainment media. Far greater a diversion than the "bread and circuses" of Rome, electronic media allows the public to vicariously exist in any life or time they desire. Apathy results.
It ´self corrected´ with the Civil War. Wonder how it will happen this time ? The Red States are increasingly unhappy being forced to pay for the insanity of the blue states and cities that are going broke. Listen up . We cannot afford you any longer.
All I can say is that I´m glad I´m not so old and defeated as most of the posters here. You can all lay down and whine all you like, I´ll go hang with young Americans who know what we have and are fighting not to lose it. Mrs. Cow
The country has not recovered from LBJ´s "great society." It took tremendous loss of innocent life to stop slavery. Now is the time to fight, not to go along to see if we have more votes at some polyanna time in the future.
Right #15 but if any of his naive supporters, aka Obamaphiles had even a hint of cynicism coupled with a tepid smidgen of curiosity, they would know that rearranging the letters in Santa spells Satan. The Islamo Socialist poseur has the eyes of a reptile and black heart of a demon.
Let´s hope he´s right. The truth is--we didn´t have to go through all this in the first place. Voting for an individual who had never accomplished anything, never run anything, refused to stand up and be counted in the Illinois legislature, who had been associated with the likes of Rev. Wrong, Billy Ayers, et al. ??? Stupid, stupid, stupid.
The old America could self-correct. The new America has a 1.8 child per couple birthrate. That is not the replacement rate of 2.11. As a result we have businesses clamoring for foreign labor. Politicians are eying the emerging demographic as their new base.
I hope the author is correct but math may not be on his side. In addition he doesn´t seem to factor in the utter breakdown in black communities. Those numbers are not good either.
#17 is correct in the short term. Conservative black voices are really going to have to step up their ´A´ game if we want the Obama voter base to listen.
Secondly, I think it is going to be extremely difficult to get rid of a lot of Obama´s executive order garbage. Simply, his most fervent supporters will really start screaming about how racist we all are for trying to do that.
Germany and Japan self-corrected only after we stepped in and defeated their governments and militaries, and then financed their recoveries. Who is going to step in and help us? No one. Most of the world hates us, now more than ever.
It´s up to us and our own military and I´m not even sure we can still count on them, given recent actions from the Pentagon.
I´ll give the author a paritial OK. The article was written with selective hindsight. What is good and what is bad depends on the individual; the huge social programs of FDR, were they corrected? Not sure, don´t think so. Government spending our contributed money for social security to bankrupt it--has that been corrected? Not yet. Obamacare; which is probably the point of the article, will it be corrected? Not in my lifetime, maybe altered but there are to many takers in our country now to get the correction accomplished.
Will America self correct for those that voted for him? Will America self correct for the millions of third world detritus that have descended upon us? Will America self correct for the shrinking European population? Will America self correct for the dumbing down of our children? Will America self correct for endless foreign wars? Will America self correct for the trillions in deficits? Will American self correct for the loss of our traditions? Our common heritage? Will America self correct for our loss of a common language? A common history?
Combining something the author said with the illuminating-as-usual post of #10 makes me pessimistic for our chances for a turnaround. To wit:
FTA: "I admit that the Indians got a bad deal. A well-meaning group of immigrants left oppression, then came to America and oppressed. The interlopers got greedy and the Indians paid for it; many with their lives." [We are the Indians, folks.]
#10: "We also have too many members of our society who are illiterate even though they have spent twelve years or more sitting in government schools." [And too many of us Indians are dumb.]
This land called America is no less valuable now than it was when we conquered it. There are many who are envious of us, and want this country. And young Americans are too illiterate and preoccupied to even recognize the threat(s) much less defend against it (them).
I like the writer´s optimism, and he is right that we have self-corrected --in the past.
Problem is, America is a different country now. We have been de-moralized. And the "spirit" to which Jackson refers has been degraded by (a) the dumbing down of our schools and (b) the encroaching welfare state.
Also one big quibble with Jackson: His mea culpa for America´s earlier "oppression" of American Indians is overly guilt-ridden. We can all agree that shoving the Indians into socialist camps called "reservations" was a bad thing.
However, some Indian tribes did, in fact, commit the most atrocious "savagery" upon completely unoffending European settlers. The horror of these Indian massacres is not taught in public schools anymore -- it is too politically incorrect.
The horrifying Indian massacres --similar to today´s Islamicist terrorism with their indiscriminate torture and slaughter of men, women, children and babies-- demanded a strong response. This is not to say that President Andrew Jackson was completely justified in his response reaction. But let´s not forget what provoked his reaction.
Well, there is a huge elephant in the room. Do you think THE CABAL is ready to let go of what they fought for for a 100 years? Don´t you think they have a plan? Don´t be too optimistic, don´t wait for the nature to take its course. Be realistic and fight each and every way we still can!
Happy go lucky, positive hopes for America, but the most sloppy writing ever remembered on Lucianne. Like the idea! There is hope, because so many millions of working, strong Americans are doing the right thing every day. It´s just that Nobama, his chaos crew and all the commie Diane Sawyer media who back his lying ways 24/7, do not acknowledge the real greatness of thes millions of working Americans. He tops it off calling socialist/communists the good name of "liberal", just like Ann Coulter mistakenly does. Kevin could re-write this loose leaf stuff and come out with something really worthwhile.
#21’s excellent analysis concluded with, “Apathy results.” In total recognition of the widespread apathy within our body politic I ask, “What of that apathy? Will we find that hidden within that weakness is our strength?”
Like any Tea Party group organizer I am intimately familiar with apathy, even in those who recognize the danger and “want something done” but by someone else. We would have 40 people at a meeting and only a handful were willing to attend city council or county supervisor meetings, write letters to the editor, or walk the precinct for conservative candidates. I’ve been asking myself why since the last November.
People want to live their lives and really don’t want to deal with what some politicians write on a piece of paper in a far away capitol. They are tired of argument and so no longer offer any response to the craziness. They turn and walk away, and go on with their life. Perhaps the “American Spirit” is in play with in this attitude as it is a way for individuals express their non-consent, “I don’t care for your game or your rules, so I choose not to play. See ya.”
The one thing that all totalitarians crave is the consent of their victims. (See: “Atlas Shrugged”) The greatest weapon an individual, and a society, fighting communism can wield is the withholding of their consent. Perhaps the apathy of our fellow citizens will be the wall that cannot be breached by the cabal.
Caveat: I am fully aware that totalitarians eventually use force. Will the American Spirit hiding under the guise of apathy rouse itself to offer more physical resistance?
I hate to be the voice of doom, but when George Soros sells the US the software and machines for voting, I doubt that America can now "self-correct". It´s not how you vote anymore but who counts the votes. Voter fraud will be ramped up for the 2014 elections. Count on it.
The writer shows his minority roots and viewpoint in the bowing to the American Indian and decrying alleged mistreatment by whites.
Indians were migrants and squatters who got here before Europeans got here. They were Stone Age pedestrians who often fought opposing tribes, engaged in torture of enemies, committed rape and abduction, and so forth. Of course they would lose a continent to a more advanced civilization that also had a larger population than theirs. The details were often tragic, but that´s the nature of human history.
As far as the tone and thrust overall of this piece... it´s a feel-good item expressing optimism of the author, nothing more.
America has never undergone such an enormous silent invasion of illegal aliens, most of them poor, generally uneducated, from socialist oriented countries, as has been happening for the last two decades.
If the liberal Democrats cow the Republicans into facilitating their massive amnesty for up to 20 million illegal aliens, in about a decade the Democrats will pick up 10 million or more new foreign born voters. Then under family based chain immigration another 20 million or so family members of the amnestied aliens will be able to come to the USA and will constitute another 10 million or so eventual US new voters.
Since historically about 85% of that class of alien, after being given US voting rights have always voted for the liberal Democrats, it will be all down hill from there for the Republicans and the conservative political agenda. All you have to do is look at the prospective new voter numbers as a result of such an amnesty to figure that out.
No Kev, it won´t. It can´t because it is too late. By 3 1/2 years from now, it will be abundantly clear why. Here´s a hint; Obama´s not the problem. The majority of the people you think will self-correct are.
Welcome to the progressive way. We need not look far, however, as to why this has happened given last November´s election outcome. We conversative will fare a lot better in 2014 and 2016 and beyond if we unite behind our candidates...who ever they are. Might I suggest we not be suckered by the progressive tricks anymore to further divide and conquer those of us.
I love what Kevin has said. Especially from his perspective as a black man. But, I serious doubt this time we can self correct. Our borders have crumbled to allow in the dregs of the world- could we have said that in 1849, 1898,1918,- no, because we had borders and every person who came in was wanting to be an "American" - these people today are encouraged to come to this nation to destroy her. In our most dire moments before this era, every American understood the value of self determination and self advancement. We all had the right to advance or not advance our position in life. Now, the workers are badly outnumbered by the takers and the government leeches. When we were great, we out produced every other nation on earth combined! Now, we hold onto the last vestiges of our once mighty production capacity by a thread- the lefty controls have strangled American productivity. We freely surrendered our greatness- to share poverty with the 3rd worlders. Oh, well. It was a good ride while it lasted.
House-Senate negotiators are close to a modest budget accord to avoid another government shutdown, but suddenly the White House is introducing a last-minute demand. Five years into an economic recovery that President Obama often hails as miraculous, he wants to extend unemployment benefits one more time. Maybe it´s time to consider whether the big expansion of unemployment insurance has increased joblessness. In 2009 the Obama Administration and Congress extended jobless benefits for up to 99 weeks. The point was to help people through the recession, but now the jobless rate is 7%, down from 10%, and the White House still wants
Media: Russian ruler Vladimir Putin dissolved his state news agency on Monday, apparently for being insufficiently fawning. President Obama doesn´t have to worry about that with the dominant media here. The ex-KGB officer ruling an eighth of the planet´s inhabited land for nearly a decade and a half now, with no end in sight thanks to rigged elections, has abolished RIA Novosti and replaced it with a kind of reborn Radio Moscow. "Radio Putin," as it should be called, will propagandize to the rest of the world. RIA actually described the purge it is victim of as heralding "a tightening of state
Hysteria: The British Daily Star reports that Britain is in for 30 years of extreme "killer winter storms" due to climate change. There is, of course, no way anyone can know this for sure. But that's never stopped the alarmists. (Snip) In its "Extreme Weather Events in Europe" report issued last week, the European Academies Science Advisory Council bedeviled the populace about a future of deadly heat waves, floods, droughts and deep freezes. The report, which is the basis for the Daily Star's eye-catching journalism, suggests that individual member states of the European Union "will need to develop and share information
Propaganda: A lesson plan for third-graders linked to a controversial federal education initiative makes sure America´s next generation does not forget who is the one we have been waiting for. During the Soul Train Awards in 2012, comedian and actor Jamie Foxx exhorted a wildly cheering crowd to "first of all (give) honor to god, and our lord and savior Barack Obama," exhibiting the all-too-widespread hero worship that casts rational thought aside and labels even legitimate criticism as virtual blasphemy. The same cult of personality is creeping into lesson plans and reading materials being created under the guise of the platform for
I read at Breitbart that the Satan-worshipping group Satanic Temple wants its very own statue outside the Oklahoma Statehouse in Oklahoma City alongside a Ten Commandments monument. USA Today reports that the Republican legislature invited such insidious activity by authorizing the privately funded Ten Commandments statue on the Capitol grounds. If they were to decline the commission of a Satanic icon, it could constitute an unconstitutional infringement on the First Amendment. The ACLU has already filed a lawsuit for the removal of the monument. As Lucien Greaves, the spokesman for Satanic Temple,
TWO THINGS ALL conservatives love are narratives of decline and talking about conservatism. Put those together and you have the popular argument that conservatism ain’t what it used to be. The chart of that supposed decline, if you were to draw it Ascent of Man style, would start with Edmund Burke looking intelligent and walking upright, followed by William F. Buckley as Australopithecus, slouching. The present age would be represented by some knuckle-dragging, prognathous creature like Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity. First comes very smart, then pretty smart, and then not very smart at all. Some of those on the right
DOHA, Qatar -- Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has ordered the U.S. military to transport troops from Burundi into the Central African Republic to help quell the latest upsurge in violence there. Hagel approved the order after speaking with French Minister of Defense Jean-Yves Le Drian Monday night from Afghanistan where he was visiting troops. Le Drian asked the U.S. to help get African troops quickly into the country to prevent the violence there from spreading, said Pentagon spokesman Carl Woog. There are more than 1,000 French troops in the Central African Republic, where Christian armed fighters launched an attack
RUSH: Do you know, folks, that you can keep your doctor after all if you´re willing to pay more? That´s from Zeke Emanuel, brother of Rahm Emanuel, who´s one of the architects of Obamacare. And you can. If you´re willing to pay more, you can keep your doctor, and nobody ever said anything else. "Obama didn´t lie to you," he said. "It´s just a matter of choice." No, no, it´s not. We´re losing choice. I was thinking about something. Those of you that were not alive in the 1950s hear a lot about it and how the old fuddy-duddies want
RUSH: I kid you not, the Daily Caller: "Liberals Want to Stop Men From Checking Out Women." Liberals want to make it a crime for men to ogle or otherwise look at or otherwise admire or otherwise dream about or otherwise fantasize about or otherwise look at and laugh, whatever, women. "In the progressive future, men will not be able to look at women´s bodies because that is a terrible thing to do -- and science says so. "Researchers have offered a definitive report into the science of the male ´objectifying gaze,´" and that is in quotes, "in the December
RUSH: There´s a fascinating couple of stories on wealth. Do you know, folks, one of the things, talking about wealth and poverty, the poor, the rich, when I endeavor to explain American exceptionalism -- and, by the way, if I may be a little Obama-like here. In the foreword that I wrote for Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims -- remember that book written for children 10 to 13, primarily for everybody. I wrote my definition of American exceptionalism in a way that young people can understand it. At least I tried to. My uncle read that portion at our
RUSH: Well, they tried to make me the villain in the soap opera about the pope, but it just didn´t take off this time. They´re still out there trying. There´s a left-wing Catholic group with 6,000 signatures to a petition. They´re a left-wing, pro-abortion bunch of Catholics, which means they´re not really Catholic. Anyway, they´re trying to raise all kinds of problems with this, but they´ve not been able to. I have a column here in my formerly nicotine-stained fingers by Shikha Dalmia at Reason.com. It´s entitled, "The Pope´s Self-Defeating Anti-Capitalist Rant." The piece does not mention me, but it
President Obama has found someone to blame for the Affordable Care Act´s rolling failures besides Republicans. ObamaCare is the government´s fault, not his. On Thursday, Mr. Obama dropped by American University for a heart to heart with Chris Matthews, and the MSNBC host wondered who in the executive branch is responsible for the botched health-care rollout. Mr. Obama listed a few impersonal culprits including "cynicism," "Washington gridlock" and "the management of government," but he then drifted into another classic. "The challenge, I think, that we have going forward is not so much my personal management style or particular issues around White House
The question all week long was this: Who are you going to believe, an illegal alien or the president of the United States of America? Obviously, if it’s a president who once went by an alias, Barry Soetoro, you go with Uncle Omar, 100 percent, no questions asked. And so it was that the White House finally admitted to another, uh, misstatement — despite previous denials, Barack/Barry did sleep on his beloved Uncle Omar’s couch in Cambridge when he first moved here to attend Harvard Law School (speaking of which, we’re still waiting to see the president’s grades and his LSAT scores). But the
How do you get your arms around the catastrophe known as Obamacare? Is it even possible? At this point, I’m not sure it is. The list of individual disasters which threaten to ruin one-sixth of the U.S. economy and what has been, up until now, the best healthcare system in the world is exhaustive, and exhausting. The examples I will identify here barely scratch the surface. First but by no means foremost, we have the supposedly new and improved HealthCare.gov. Except it’s not, even the visible part. Stories still abound of people still failing to get in or to get through the enrollment
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a new five-year strategic plan to improve safety for elderly drivers and passengers. Although they are statistically among the safest on the road, the number of older drivers is increasing dramatically — and with it, that group´s numbers of injuries and deaths. Since 2003, the population of older adults, defined as age 65 and older, has increased by 20% and the number of licensed older drivers increased by 21% to 35 million in 2012, according to NHTSA. Last year, NHTSA reported that 5,560 people older than 65 died and 214,000 were injured
A veteran Washington adviser who has worked for four Presidents on both sides of the political aisle said that the stunning Government Accountability Report report that found President Barack Obama has not had a one-on-one meeting with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius since the passage of Obamacare over three years ago is an indictment of the entire White House operation and shows that the Obama administration has bordered on "malfeasance." "I have no doubt the White House is right, that Secretary Sebelius was in several group meetings with the president about health care," Gergen caveated, "but the whole
President Barack Obama’s Facebook page on Saturday posted a message honoring the dead from Pearl Harbor—accompanied by a picture of Obama descending the stairs next to the Pearl Harbor Memorial. The picture barely fits the name of the Arizona Memorial so it can frame Obama in the foreground. The post´s statement reads: Today, with solemn pride and reverence, let us remember those who fought and died at Pearl Harbor, acknowledge everyone who carried their legacy forward, and reaffirm our commitment to upholding the ideals for which they served. President Obama The Obama Administration´s current shipbuilding plan shrinks the size of
Barack Obama did not tell the whole story this autumn when he tried to make the case that Bashar al-Assad was responsible for the chemical weapons attack near Damascus on 21 August. In some instances, he omitted important intelligence, and in others he presented assumptions as facts. Most significant, he failed to acknowledge something known to the US intelligence community: that the Syrian army is not the only party in the country’s civil war with access to sarin, the nerve agent that a UN study concluded – without assessing responsibility – had been used in the rocket attack. In the months before the attack,
Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, the hapless, goalpost-shifting so-called "architect" of Obamacare, told Fox News´ Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday that President Barack Obama´s promise "if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor" was absolutely true--with one important caveat: if you like your doctor, "you can pay for it." Wallace grilled Dr. Emanuel, challenging his false claims that California´s enrollment was keeping pace with the percentage of the young population necessary to keep the system afloat, and pointing out that the president´s promise on doctors would collapse once people lost their insurance or their
Just how much do many Hollywood liberals hate conservatives? In an interview with Playboy, Ben Affleck said, "When I watch a guy [on film] I know is a big Republican, part of me thinks, I probably wouldn’t like this person if I met him": PLAYBOY: You developed a political profile campaigning for presidential candidates Al Gore, John Kerry and Barack Obama. How did that come about? AFFLECK: I grew up in a house with a mother who was a teacher and a Freedom Rider—very left-wing Democrats living in a heterogeneous working-class neighborhood. I picked up a lot of those values there, and I
The U.S. isn´t called "America the Beautiful" for nothing. Each year, millions of tourists come from home and abroad to see the country´s majestic landscape and iconic sites, from the Grand Canyon to the Statue of Liberty. But there are also cool, quirky attractions, like Vermont´s Ben & Jerry´s Factory and Tennessee´s Graceland, the former home of Rock and Roll King Elvis Presley. From California to New York and everywhere in between, the country is chock-full of incredible attractions that keep luring in visitors. Here are the best tourist attractions in every state.
MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry opened her program over the weekend with a commentary about the Affordable Care Act’s colloquial moniker: “Obamacare.” She said that the word was originally created as a “derogatory term,” designed by white men as a way to delegitimize President Barack Obama and his achievement. However, she said that the term will soon be synonymous with all of Obama’s accomplishments and she urged her audience to use the term with pride. “I want to talk today about a controversial word. It’s a word that has been with us for years, and like it or not, it’s indelibly
Call me Grinch, call me Scrooge. Call me Lord Voldemort of the Yuletide. None could be worse than sending me a holiday card with glossy photographs of your lovely, smiling family. My wife, Emily, and I place your cards like trophies on our shelves, continuing an old-school practice that began about 175 years ago as a way of maintaining relationships as families and friends moved far and wide. Today’s cards may appear more personalized — with photos of spouses, kids and pets, and distribution lists much smaller than a sprawling collection of Facebook friends. But when I flip over the photo
Chris Matthews is crazy. Nevertheless, when left-wingers talk openly with one another, their craziness can be revealing. That is the case, I think, with this remarkable MSNBC clip. Matthews, fresh from his kneepad interview with President Obama, praises what he terms a uniquely brilliant insight by Al Sharpton: South Africa’s white politicians of the apartheid era were more patriotic than today’s Republicans: I haven’t heard anything as smart as what I heard Reverend Sharpton say a moment go in five years. The difference between the way F.W. de Klerk handled the need for change and the election – democratic election
