Disarmament experts from the international chemical weapons watchdog have begun destroying Syria´s arsenal, a monitoring official has said. The operation is being carried out by a team from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). The mission was established under a UN resolution passed after agreement between Russia and the US. The resolution followed international outrage at a chemical weapons attack near Damascus in August. In an interim report, UN chemical weapons inspectors confirmed that the nerve agent sarin had been used in the attack in Ghouta on the outskirts of the city on August 21. It was estimated to have killed

#1, and get the same results that removing Ghadaffi produced? Maybe the death of more Americans? We can´t afford to keep losing ambassadors.

The US Olympic Committee has advised athletes taking part in the upcoming Sochi Games to avoid wearing their uniforms or Team USA logos outside Olympic venues. The warning for American athletes not to advertise their nationality due to security concerns came in a memo from the committee, which prepared it with the advice of the State Department, officials said, confirming a report in the Wall Street Journal. State Department spokesman Marie Harf said "the US Olympic Committee, I think, had discussed with its athletes, as part of how to sort of stay safe and things to look out for as

Hand guns should be legalised and

The Ukip leader has said it is party policy for hand guns to be legalised and licensed in the UK despite being banned in the UK for the last 18 years. Mr Farage said the current ban on the guns, which were made illegal following the school shooting at Dunblane in 1996, was “ludicrous.” Speaking on LBC Radio Mr Farage said that it was Ukip policy to create a “proper licensing policy” and that people who kept hand guns responsibly locked up and had were willing to get an official license should “absolutely” be allowed them. Winter whiteout carnage as massive

A massive pile up during a whiteout storm in Indiana on Thursday afternoon killed three people and injured more than 20 others. Chaotic scenes of jackknifed trailers and the mangled wreckage of cars packed across three lanes of the highway could be seen after visibility dropped to nearly zero at about 3.30pm. More than 40 vehicles, including semitrailers and cars, were involved in the deadly crash near Michigan City, but wintry conditions and the scale of the crash site slowed rescue efforts. One driver was still trapped in their car at 6.30pm, three hours after the crash happened, as rescue crews worked

Cutting benefits is a moral mission like

Conservative welfare reforms are part of an ´historic mission´ in the tradition of the fight to end slavery, Iain Duncan Smith claimed today. The Work and Pensions Secretary said his determination to cut benefits and get people back to work is like the work of William Wilberforce who campaigned for the end of the slave trade and Lord Shaftesbury, who enacted laws to protect women and children in Victorian factories. [Snip] And in a clear reference to the Channel 4 documentary Benefits Street, the Work and Pensions Secretary said that under Labour the ‘middle-class majority were largely unaware of the

Pensioners with cancer are being written off as too old to treat, campaigners said yesterday. They cited figures showing survival rates for British patients aged 75 and over are among the worst in Europe. Young lung cancer sufferers are only 10 percent more likely to die within five years than their continental counterparts. But pensioners with the disease have 44 percent less chance of survival. The figure for stomach cancer--at 45 percent--is even worse. And Britons with prostate cancer are a fifth less likely to survive than Europeans if they are 85 and over. Just 43 percent live for five

To call Twitter a wild west is an understatement – it’s regressed far beyond that. We’re back to tribes and mob rule – with added speed and bloodlust. The inhabitants are confused and angry and move in swarms. You never know when they’ll suddenly swerve in unison and come at you. But how to deal with this random, terrifying phenomenon? Some hope we can get rid of it by civilising Twitter: introduce a basic justice system, swap the tribes for a sort of centralised government, perhaps move everyone on from hunter-gathering to nomadic farming. This might take a while.

Michelle Obama´s decision to cite Jane Fonda as a woman she admires has caused a Republican backlash because of the actress´ left-wing activism. Fonda, who has been infamous since she took a trip to North Vietnam in 1972 and was pictured wearing a helmet and posing with a gun during the war which was taken as an insult to American troops, was one of two actresses that she said she looks up to as she thinks about growing older. New Yorkers with musophobia--the fear of rats--should look away now. The irrational fear of rats, in New York City where there are an estimated two times as many rats are there are people, may not seem so crazy after a look at the New York City Health Department´s Rat Information Portal, or RIP. The dense human population means rats thrive in New York, roaming city streets by night, hanging out in subway tunnels and feasting on curbside garbage. To discover the extent to which any neighborhood or building is infested, residents and businesses can look at raw data gathered by

What’s so great about Zulu? To answer that question properly, you need to pass this test first. 1) Do you know Men of Harlech off by heart? 2) Can you name at least half of the 11 Victoria Cross winners in the film (by their nicknames where possible) without resorting to Google? 3) Have you ever found yourself stirred to ridiculous feelings of patriotism by John Barry’s magnificent film score on the morning commute? I really hope someone else answers “yes” to all three, otherwise you can chalk me up as a lone madman. Zulu--released 50 years ago this week--is

The Democrats´ new much-vaunted master plan for annihilating the Tea Party movement calls for aggressive class warfare, demagoguery, and lying about the beliefs, motives, and goals of Tea Party supporters, Sen. Chuck Schumer revealed yesterday. Echoing President Obama´s infamous "bitter clingers" remarks, the New York Democrat argued that Tea Party supporters are cartoonish figures who are easily ridiculed. Invoking all the usual liberal cliches about conservatives, Schumer said the Tea Party is successor to "the Know-Nothings, Prohibitionists, Father Coughlin, and Huey Long." In other words, he believes the movement is a collection of hicks, yahoos, neo-Luddites, fascists, male chauvinists, and racists fearful

If there is anything New York doesn´t need it´s more reasons for Empire State residents to flee. Over the last decade (2001-11) New York´s population fell by 1.6 million. Many disgruntled New Yorkers said enough, packed up and left the state. This was a larger population drain than suffered by any other state. Congratulations. That´s why Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo´s declaration that "extreme conservatives ... have no place in the state of New York" was so dumbfounding. Politics: The Obama administration has turned the executive branch loose on its enemies — part of a disturbing and unprecedented trend toward delegitimizing political differences and marginalizing conservatives. Behind the special status of his presidency, President Obama has used the machinery of government to harass and intimidate political opponents — to an extent greater even than former Presidents Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton, both threatened with impeachment. Consider these recent events, courtesy of the Ace of Spades blog: • Attorney General Eric Holder´s Southern District of New York office has indicted conservative author, activist and filmmaker Dinesh D´Souza — producer of the critical

In politics, lying is the new sex. Even the lesser sin, exaggeration, is grounds for questions about your suitability to run for office. Americans may be becoming more like the French in tolerating peccadilloes (just ask Rep. Mark Sanford of South Carolina or Sen. David Vitter of Louisiana about surviving a sex scandal), but get a detail wrong about whether you divorced at 21 or at 19, and woe unto you. That’s what happened to Wendy Davis over the weekend. You may know her as the Texas state senator in pink sneakers who delivered an 11-hour filibuster against abortion restrictions in June.

Maybe it’s because “Bubba” just doesn’t have the same je ne sais quoi as the “Gipper,” but Bill Clinton is apparently jealous of the reverence Republicans give former president Ronald Reagan. According to the much-talked-about New York Times Magazine feature story on the world around Hillary, Bill and Chelsea Clinton, the former president is described as miffed that Democrats don´t treat him like Republicans do Reagan. Amy Chozick reports: “People close to Bill Clinton have told me repeatedly that it irks them that Democrats don’t talk about the dignified, slimmed-down, silver-haired former president with the same reverence Republicans give Ronald Reagan.” Her story,

Holder’s effort to profile the entire nation as cowards came during a friendly interview with the University of Virginia’s Miller Center, where was asked if he would take back his 2009 remarks. “I would not take that back,” he replied.
