ESPN´s David Pollack: Women don´t
belong on college playoff committee

Los Angeles Times, by Chris Dufresne

Oh brother (but not sister), here we go. I knew the college football selection committee was going to be controversial, but I didn´t think it would happen before the panel was actually announced. News that former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is expected to named to the committee has already elicited blowback from certain blowhards at ESPN. Former Georgia player David Pollack said on Saturday morning´s GameDay show he didn´t think women belonged on a committee that, starting next year, will choose the top four teams for the new playoff. "I want people on this committee, guys, that can watch tape, yes, that have

Comments:
Condoleezza Rice is considered to be an authority on football. Green young Pollack? Had a fine college career and played just a little more than one year for NFL. Now in the sports banner business and working for ESPN.

The two persons I know who know absolutely the most about football and all the teams are....women.

If women don´t belong in football, why is Roger Goodell the NFL commissioner?

I admire Sec. Rice, but I agree with Pollack, she does NOT belong on the committee, period. Women are great fans, but unless you have played the game you have no business choosing who will compete in the playoff.

She´s not just any woman.

Read her bio. She´s probably had more in-depth exposure to football than Mr. Pollack. Otherwise why would they have wanted her for the Commissioner of the Pac-10?

First, why is there a special selection committee at all?

I thought the top four teams in the rankings would be in the playoff.
Isn´t that a fairly obvious way to select?
It would be non-controversial.

As soon as you start throwing in a wild card aspect... what, a number 5 or 6 ranked
team would be jumped over the top four? ... then you invite endless controversy.

And that brings in Condoleeza Rice.
When they say "people of great stature, for the integrity" etc...
There is no integrity in inviting celebs to select wild card teams.

You just take the top four ranked teams.
This is so simple.

Now we have to have a cutesy affirmative action plan to shovel this BS down
our throats.

How do ya think we ended up with Barky as a Wannabe Kommie Dicktater.

"Oh, it will bring diversity... it´s long overdue... makes up for past slights...
yada yada yada... "

PC run amok.
Let football be football.
Top four ranked teams at the end of season.
Period.
(There is already a panel for that, consisting of coaches etc in one poll,
sportswriters in another... we do not need more affirmative action.)

ESPN host Chris Fowler responded: " ´So no woman belongs on the committee, then?´ "

That´s not quite accurate. Chris Fowler did not "respond"; he interrupted. Pollack was not allowed to finish his sentence and to fully articulate his views. Apparently it is impermissible to have an opinion that doesn´t match that of the current mainstream.

There may well be some women who know football (Condoleeza being one of them), but I don´t agree with insisting on having women simply for the sake of ´gender equity´. Yet that´s what seems to be being discussed here.
