Journalists have put much effort into understanding the method to the madness behind the “defund ObamaCare” strategy. (Snip)Even if we disagree with the strategy for achieving our mutual goals, I think we can all appreciate the sense of frustration. But while it’s important to understand the philosophy driving the defund argument, my guess is that the counter argument isn’t completely understood, either. At least, many of the tea party folks probably don’t fully appreciate the legitimate concerns. (No, opponents of the defund strategy aren’t pansies worried about offending their elite friends at cocktail parties.) I don’t claim to speak for
It will never fly, Orville. Like so many others, he presents the argument that we should first elect solid conservatives, then try this. Look what the establishment republicans do to every solid conservative who gets elected, or even tries to run. They re either turned into rinos themselves, or get the full hatchet job. Its now or never.
The one thing I want to see happen from this shutdown is that CONGRESS loses their Health Coverage, 75% of which is PAID for by the Taxpayers. By LAW Congress is supposed to live with Obamacare, just like the rest of America. I think that ANY Republican who votes to keep this PERK should be primaried! Weed out those who think they´re King or Queen of the world!
The author makes a foolish and weak argument. He assumes the fallout from this will hurt the GOP. On the contrary - the fallout is all landing on the regime from the sick overplay of their hands - attacking vets, letting children die of cancer, spending extra $$ to shutter monuments than it would to keep them open - the public notices these things which the Pravda media can no longer conceal. The shutdown is turning out to be an even larger cry-wolf from the regime than the sequester did.
It all depends on what your definition of "lose" is. The GOP needs to win back the base for 2014 and 2016. How would giving up and "waiting" now accomplish that?
I was born and raised in the South but have lived in the North for 30 years.
Around the middle of the 1970´s liberals commandeered the term (folks) to show they were empathetic. As their untried idealism eroded their sincerity turned to cynicism and craving for power. Their political vocabulary likewise became distorted.
The problem is that this argument gets trotted out every time the base demands that the Republican Party fight for what it claims to stand for. "We can´t win now. We have to wait until we have more support." If you do not fight for what you claim to stand for, people begin to think that you don´t really mean it when you say that you want something. Of course, that´s because all too many of them don´t want it. You cannot win if you are never willing to fight. Until the Republicans force the Democrats to, at least occasionally, give in, the ever growing government will continue to grow.
The current political parties are the bane of Washington. This so-called healthcare disaster is not about health or care. It is Washington in the insurance business for the MONEY!
Nameless, faceless, incompetents in the IRS will decide what, if any, treatment you get solely on whether they want to pay for it. Low level Democrat voters, loyal to the Party, will be more likely to be approved for procedures, while the elderly (50 yrs. old or older) and those with a history of Conservative involvement, will be denied or delayed treatment.
This isn´t a government being benevolent. This is government taking your freedom away and spending your money (remember Social Security). Washington D. C. is synonymous with thievery. They have no money of their own and take if from the population and its industry (what little is left).
You are being hoodwinked if you think this is a good thing. Marxism/Socialism is NEVER a good thing!!
What the promoters of obamacare don´t understand or don´t care about is the entire economy will crash if obamacare is implemented. It´s that simple. Either we trash it and put together a sustainable system or there goes health care and a functioning America. If the republicans cave on their demand, they are in essence committing suicide and dragging a lot of people with them.
Hey, us tea party people are not stupid, and are tired of Obama´s lies, and rino´s that lie and support Obama. We elected tea party republicans to form an opposition. There wasn´t one before. And yes, we expect them to fight and oppose Obama. That is why they were elected.
And the Rovettes release side B of their latest hit:
"Aw shucks, you Tea Party folks, let us help you understand something. We are more sophisticated than you. Trust us. We´ve got to maintain the appearance of postmodern psuedo-intellectual respectability. Support our McCains and Romneys. Then the mainstream media won´t make fun of us like they do the Cruzers and Sister Sarah. Don´t let them lump us in with the crazy conservative crowd! We like our taxpayer funded cocktail parties with our swell friends from the other side of the aisle. And we might even be able to pass some legislation from the mushy middle. How can you not see the wisdom here? The Constitution and the Republic be damned. We are the cool kids and we won´t let you ruin our party!"
WOW Tokyo Rove´s Gangrene Girls of the Rovette Brigade are out in force excoriating with vitriolic venom Ted Cruz and the Social and Fiscal Conservatives who support him. CDS is rampant among the G.O.P. Neville Chamberlain Caucus. For it is in such manner that each time Congressional G.O.P. representatives meet with the Godless Humanist Progressive/Liberal DemocRats in Congress and the Hussein Regime to discuss legislation that affects Americans. The Neville Chamberlain Caucus is out waving the latest counter proposal as being acceptable and the best Americans can expect. Despite handing the last two Presidential Elections to the Godless Humanist Progressive/Liberal DemocRats on a Silver Platter in the form of FAILED Cookie Cutter Candidates who were just Lite Versions of the opposing Party. The Neville Chamberlain Caucus, like a Meth addict, seek to continue the repetitive madness while dragging the country down with them.
I stopped trusting Tucker when he demeaned Sarah Palin on twitter when he called her a m-i-l-f, reducing her to a sexual object. What a classless phrase. Tucker is where he is only because of his well-known and well-connected and wealthy mother and all the privileges that came with it. Money and connections can´t buy class and integrity. And they didn´t in his case.
"folks" is often used as code to refer to stupid. Just as "bless their hearts". I am a child of the south and I know exactly what Matt Lewis meant. So does everybody else here.
It´s way beyond political and all the way to constitutional. Obama is trying to coerce the House to spend money the way he wants it spent without any say from the House to whom the power of the purse is granted by the constitution. They must not give in to a threat of government shutdown. It´s their duty to defend the constitution and that means not transferring the power of the purse to the executive branch.
#20, your obtuseness and pettiness are what is ridiculous. I am talking about the particular use of the word in the article, it all depends on the context of how the word is used. If you can´t understand that, then "bless your little, tiny, petty heart". That´s all folks.
You and your buddies operate the same exact way. You take umbrage, in your marvelously obtuse way, as if you don´t understand a comment because every single nuance of the comment is not laid out for you. How utterly dim you are! You know perfectly well I am not talking about every single instance of the word "folks".
Ayo Kimathi, a.k.a. “the Irritated Genie," a.k.a. the black supremacist employee of the Department of Homeland Security´s U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency is "no longer an ICE employee," according to a statement from ICE´s Deputy Press Secretary Gillian Christensen. "His last day with the agency was December 6," she added. Christensen, citing privacy policies, declined to comment on whether Kimathi left voluntarily or not. Kimathi was placed on administrative leave after the Southern Poverty Law Center spotted the ICE employee´s extracurricular advocacy in August. His personal website calls for the mass murder of white people. Kimathi´s site, "War is
WASHINGTON — A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit by Rep. Charles Rangel that had sought to overturn the 2010 House censure of the New York congressman for financial wrongdoing. U.S. District Court Judge John D. Bates ruled Wednesday that Rangel´s demands implicate "insurmountable separation-of-powers barriers" to the court´s authority. Bates added that Rangel´s quarrel is with the House, and it must stay there. Rangel´s suit claimed that staff and members of the House Ethics Committee that conducted the probe against him willfully suppressed evidence of misconduct in how the investigation was conducted. The House censured Rangel for various financial actions, including failure
The man accused of faking sign interpretation next to world leaders at Nelson Mandela´s memorial told a local newspaper that he was hallucinating and hearing voices. Thamsanqa Jantjie did not describe his qualifications for being a sign language interpreter, but told The Star he works for an interpreting company that paid him $85 for interpreting Tuesday´s event. He told Radio 702 Thursday he´s receiving treatment for schizophrenia and had an episode while on stage. Jantjie did not address allegations by sign language experts that he faked interpretation for the Mandela memorial attended by scores of world leaders and broadcast internationally. The Star quoted
WASHINGTON -- A budget agreement between key Republicans and Democrats. Even President Barack Obama was on board. All without anyone threatening to repeal this or shut down that. Gridlock, however briefly, took an early holiday in the bitterly polarized, Republican-run House. But across the Capitol, the high-minded Senate remains in the grip of some of the worst partisan warfare in its history after majority Democrats curbed the Republicans´ power. A round-the-clock talkathon is the result, putting no one in the mood for cooperation. Majority Harry Reid threatened to shorten the Senate´s cherished Christmas vacation if need be. A Republican called his bluff. "What´s
We are always asking questions, even when we´re not. A new study suggests that "uptalk," phrasing your statements with a rise in pitch at the end, isn´t just something young women do: it seems to be expanding to other demographics, including young men. In Southern California, anyway, young people tend to uptalk no matter their gender, ethnicity or socioeconomic status, suggests a small new study presented last week at the Acoustical Society of America’s annual meeting. “The use of uptalk is certainly more than just stereotypical ‘Valley Girl speak’ in Southern California. In fact, uptalk serves several purposes in the speech of
In the wake of the Obama selfie firestorm from Nelson Mandela’s memorial service, a commonsense guide to taking selfies. I’m old enough to remember when Selfies at a Funeral was a thing. It was a Tumblr, to be precise, so buzzworthy and relevant that by November 13, it was featured on Good Morning America. The site still exists, but on December 10, 2013, it took its own life: “Obama Has Taken A Funeral Selfie,” reads the final post, “So Our Work Here Is Done.” How did we get here? It wasn’t quite a selfie that POTUS snapped, and it wasn’t exactly a
TALLAHASSEE —A nearly 6-foot-tall "Festivus" pole made from empty beer cans will be put up in the Florida Capitol this week as a not-so-subtle protest to the recent placement of a Christmas nativity scene. The mock monument will be erected most likely on Wednesday in the same first-floor rotunda as a nativity scene depicting the birth of Jesus Christ put up last week by the Florida Prayer Network. "I still chuckle, I literally can´t believe there will be a pile of Pabst Blue Ribbon cans in the state rotunda," said Chaz Stevens, a Deerfield Beach resident who applied to the
The federal health care exchange is incorrectly determining that some people are eligible for Medicaid when they clearly are not, leaving them with little chance to get the subsidized insurance they are entitled to as the Dec. 23 deadline for enrollment approaches. State and industry officials haven´t quantified the problem yet, but the National Association of State Medicaid Directors may release information next week after following up on reports from around the country, says Executive Director Matt Salo. Here´s what happens: When consumers applying for insurance put their income information into subsidy calculators on HealthCare.gov — the exchange handling insurance sales for
HAVANA — Elian Gonzalez, the young Cuban boy who survived a boat sinking and became a political football during the 2000 U.S. presidential campaign as the subject of an international custody fight, is on his first trip overseas since being reunited with his father. Cuban state-run media say Gonzalez is in Ecuador this week as part of a 200-strong delegation to the 23rd World Festival of Youth and Students, which runs through Friday. In a recent interview published on the official website Cubadebate, Gonzalez said living in Cuba afforded him more privacy than if he had stayed in the United
When a former hard-hitting news anchor’s daytime talk show suffers dangerously slipping ratings, what’s the next step? If it’s Katie Couric, the answer is to trade a history of responsible reporting for irresponsible scaremongering. In her segment last week on the HPV vaccine, Couric delivered a blow to both public health and her image. The question now is what Couric – if she’s willing – can do to repair the damage. It’s a sad turn of events for Couric, once known for drawing attention to public health issues such as colon cancer, which killed her husband. The former CBS anchor, soon
If a five-part opus in The New York Times by Andrea Elliott is to believed, we live in a hard-hearted city. But if you read closely, it suggests just the opposite. Begin with the family at the center of this story. The mother, father and eight kids aren’t really homeless at all. True, they live in housing meant for “homeless families.” But their 540-square-foot unit gives them a solid roof over their heads, in addition to city-provided meals and services. One city official tells us Elliott and the Times ignored many key facts about the family and that its situation is “atypical.” “New
President Barack Obama is flying to South Africa Monday morning to join the emotional extravaganza around the graveside of former president Nelson Mandela, leaving Vice President Joe Biden on his lonesome to attend meetings in the empty White House. The president will board U.S. Air Force One to jet around the world to Johannesburg, the capital of South Africa, while Joe stays behind to keep the lights on at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Obama is flying away from supposedly high-priority negotiations to prevent another budget shutdown of Uncle Sam’s federal government, and also from the top-priority effort to rebuild his crashed Obamacare program. He’s
New York — The anchor who might beat Bill O’Reilly gets her eyelash extensions applied one at a time, with tweezers and dabs of glue, about 90 minutes before showtime, right after a motorized gun sprays foundation over her face, neck, shoulders, collarbone and sternum, wiping out a galaxy of light freckles that spreads across her — Let me stop you right there. Photos of the day Uruguay legalizes marijuana, Kiev police pull back from protesters, aging U.S. prison population and more. Tuesday´s Photos of the day Would you write this way about a man? About O’Reilly himself? At least that’s what Megyn Kelly might ask at
In August 2013 I became very sick with what I thought was a cold. After a few days I lost vision in my left eye and I checked into the hospital. I soon found out that what I thought was a summer cold was actually Strep bacteria poisoning my blood stream. The bacteria blinded my left eye, ate a hole through my heart, caused five strokes on both sides of my brain and forced the removal of my prosthetic left knee. Dr. Lee was the surgeon assigned to perform open heart surgery. What was originally scheduled to last four hours ended
When I was a kid, I knew two different Santa Clauses. The first had a fat belly, rosy cheeks, a long white beard, and skin as pink as bubble gum. He was omnipresent, visiting my pre-school and the local mall, visible in all of my favorite Christmas specials. Then there was the Santa in my family’s household, in the form of ornaments, cards, and holiday figurines. A near-carbon copy of the first one—big belly, rosy cheeks, long white beard: check, check, check. But his skin was as dark as mine. Seeing two different Santas was bewildering. Eventually I asked my father what
Johannesburg - A man who provided sign language interpretation on stage for Nelson Mandela´s memorial service, attended by scores of heads of state, was a "fake," the national director of the Deaf Federation of South Africa said on Tuesday. Asked about the claim by The Associated Press, South Africa´s government said it was preparing a statement. Three sign language experts said the man was not signing in South African or American sign languages. South African sign language covers all of the country´s 11 official languages, according to the federation. It wasn´t immediately clear if the unidentified man was using a
The health director who approved the release of President Obama’s birth certificate has died in a plane crash, Hawaiian officials said Thursday. Loretta Fuddy died after the Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft she was travelling on went down shortly after leaving Kalaupapa Airport at around 3:15 p.m. local time (10:15 a.m. ET) on Wednesday. The other eight people on board were rescued, Richard Schuman, president of Makani Kai Air, told NBC News early Thursday, adding that that there was no indication as to why the plane had crashed. Fuddy hit the headlines two years ago when she approved a waiver request allowing Obama to
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) snapped at conservative groups that have come out in opposition to the budget deal reached Wednesday between Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.). "They´re using the American people for their own purposes. This is ridiculous," Boehner said at a press conference with other members of House Republican leadership on Wednesday. Over the past few days, a number of conservative groups have blasted the deal because it sets discretionary spending levels in the budget higher than previous levels under sequestration. In the past three days, the influential Heritage Action, Club for Growth, Americans
Views of the tea party are at all-time lows in a new poll, as primary challenges to establishment Republicans continue to heat up Washington. Just 30 percent of Americans view the tea party favorably in a new Gallup poll released Wednesday, the movement’s lowest point since Gallup began polling about it during its rise in 2010. Also in a first, a majority of Americans had an unfavorable view of the tea party, at 51 percent. Similar numbers of respondents described themselves as proponents or opponents of the tea party: Twenty-two percent identified themselves as tea party supporters, while 24 percent said they
Looks like this president can’t get away with flirting in front of his wife… It appears that first lady Michelle Obama was none too pleased with the way that President Barack Obama was acting toward Denmark Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt during a ceremony honoring Nelson Mandela, and before too long, they switched seats. This lmao! Michelle Obama vs Prime Minister of Denmark at Mandela´s ceremony. pic.twitter.com/Rq4uF9fTaZ — Stun (@TheBlogPirate) December 10, 2013
The sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela´s memorial yesterday "made up his own signs," according to South Africa´s deaf federation. "He´s a complete fraud," Cara Loening, director of Sign Language Education and Development in Cape Town, said according to ITV News. "He wasn´t even doing anything, There was not one sign there. Nothing. He was literally flapping his arms around." Delphin Hlungwane, an official South African sign language interpreter at DeafSA, told Reuters:
Fox News host Megyn Kelly has made herself the center of a racial controversy by declaring that Jesus Christ and Santa Claus are white. On Wednesday night, Kelly was responding to an article by Slate writer Aisha Harris, who wrote an article entitled “ Santa Claus Should Not Be a White Man Anymore .” The popular news host told viewers of “The Kelly File,” her hit FNC program, “When I saw this headline, I kinda laughed and I said, ‘Oh, this is ridiculous. Yet another person claiming it´s racist to have a white Santa.’ And by the way, for all you kids
THE Internet has been abuzz over the spectacle of President Obama and the prime ministers of Britain and Denmark snapping a photo of themselves — a “selfie,” to use the mot du jour — with a smartphone at the memorial service for Nelson Mandela in South Africa on Tuesday. Leaving aside whether it was appropriate, the moment captured the democratization of image making that is a hallmark of our gadget-filled, technologically rich era. Manifestly undemocratic, in contrast, is the way Mr. Obama’s administration — in hypocritical defiance of the principles of openness and transparency he campaigned on — has systematically tried
