The Shutdown Is a Sideshow.
Debt Is the Threat

Wall Street Journal, by Niall Ferguson

In the words of a veteran investor, watching the U.S. bond market today is like sitting in a packed theater and smelling smoke. You look around for signs of other nervous sniffers. But everyone else seems oblivious. Yes, the federal government shut down this week. Yes, we are just two weeks away from the point when the Treasury secretary says he will run out of cash if the debt ceiling isn´t raised. Yes, bond king Bill Gross has been on TV warning that a default by the government would be "catastrophic." Yet the yield on a 10-year Treasury note has fallen

So republicans should agree to raising the debt limit in exchange for defunding obamacare, permanently.

Another Øbama lie. They still have lots of money coming in from taxes. They haven´t shut down the part that collects cash and they never will.

The word catastrophe associated with the Debt ceiling is nothing more than Leftist Democrat propaganda. The problem is not for the nation but the Party in power. The economy will always generate more than enough money nough money to pay the National Debt dues and key government responsibilities such as the defence of the nation. The problem becomes one of expenditure priorities. The pressure will be on government to look where it must cut costs especially from "niche politically correct and partisan programs" a lot of which is so much pork barreling to protect and attract partisan support. One of them may even be Obamacare.

Maybe it´s just me but something seems weird about having to borrow money to make debt payments.

Annie Lowrey, an economics reporter for the New York Times, has an essay in this coming weekend´s Times magazine rebutting what she calls "the policy solution du jour" to the problem of "how to alleviate poverty"--namely, "marriage promotion." She makes a good case that the argument she´s rebutting is fallacious, then concludes by committing the same fallacy in reverse. "Economists have done studies showing that if you snapped your fingers and suddenly all the country´s poor, unmarried partners were hitched . . . the poverty rate would drop," a catchy if imprecise way of saying that there is a strong correlation

Obama´s IRS ´Confusion´

House committees are still digging into the IRS political targeting scandal, and based on a hearing Wednesday there´s more to learn. The day produced more evidence blowing apart President Obama´s claims that there was "not even a smidgen of corruption" or political motivation in the IRS handling of groups applying for tax-exempt status. Mr. Obama wants Americans to believe that the targeting resulted from the confusing tax law governing nonprofits, which he says was "difficult" to interpret and resulted in mere "bureaucratic" mistakes. This is also the Administration´s justification for issuing new regulations governing

Failed Diplomacy: Would you rather deal with mass murderers or incompetents? The Afghan government chose the Taliban over the Obama administration, but in the end both Afghanistan and the U.S. got rolled. Just 12 years after American forces´ historic liberation of Afghanistan in the weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the very same bloodthirsty Taliban we ousted, still fully committed to terrorist jihad and Shariah law, are on a short path back into power. The New York Times reported Monday that the already-tattered relationship between the Obama administration and Afghan President Hamid Karzai — brought into power by

Jobs: ObamaCare backers are working hard to put a happy face on news the Affordable Care Act will cause the labor force to shrink by 2.5 million full-time jobs over the next decade. What they´ve come up with isn´t pretty. We don´t expect much in the way of sound economic reasoning from liberals, but listening to their reaction to the latest findings on ObamaCare left us dumbstruck. To recap: The Congressional Budget Office determined that ObamaCare would discourage work, in large part because many middle-income families will find themselves in what amounts to a 50% marginal income tax bracket as ObamaCare subsidies

The disastrous rollout of Healthcare.gov was bad enough. But as if Americans need another reason to avoid Healthcare.gov, we now hear that the Obama administration, through the Department of Health and Human Services, has indirectly contracted with developers in the worker´s paradise of Belarus, a former Soviet republic still closely tied to Russia, to write some of the software code used for the website. There are 7.8 million Americans working part-time who want full-time work, including a fry cook whose restaurant cut his hours to avoid Affordable Care Act mandates and confronted President Obama in an online Google Q&A last week: "We can´t survive. It´s not a living." Mr. Obama changed the subject to raising the minimum wage. But he can´t dodge reality forever as the evidence piles up that ObamaCare is harming the labor market. On Tuesday no less than the Congressional Budget Office reported that the health law is causing Americans to work less or not at all, in a remarkable

Dept. Of Corrections: Leading Democrats said ObamaCare would create 4 million jobs by cutting health costs and unleashing entrepreneurs. Now we learn the promise was off by 6.5 million — in the wrong direction. Here´s what Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the top Democratic in the House, had to say about ObamaCare in February 2010: "It will create 4 million jobs, 400,000 jobs almost immediately — jobs, again, in the health care industry but in the entrepreneurial world as well." Pelosi was citing a paper released a month earlier by the left-wing Center for American Progress, which claimed the law would lower health care costs,

Bozell Takes Aim at GOP Leadership

Conservative activist Brent Bozell says it’s time for Republican leaders in Congress to step aside. His organization, ForAmerica, announced “an aggressive, six-figure social media and digital ad campaign” on Tuesday against top Republicans in the House and Senate between now and the midterm elections in November. “It’s a simple proposition,” Bozell tells National Review Online. “The Republican leadership that has been championing conservative principles and promising action has just failed miserably. A day doesn’t go by where they’re not surrendering on something, and it is the sense of conservatives around the country that they have to step down, that it’s time

The Congressional Budget Office estimated on Tuesday that the Affordable Care Act will reduce the number of full-time workers by 2.5 million over the next decade. That is mostly a good thing, a liberating result of the law. Of course, Republicans immediately tried to brand the findings as “devastating” and stark evidence of President Obama’s health care reform as a failure and a job killer. It is no such thing. (SNIP) The new law will free people, young and old, to pursue careers or retirement without having to worry about health coverage.

The Affordable Care Act, aka ObamaCare, became law almost four years ago. It became operational last Oct. 1. Yesterday, Feb. 4, 2014, the ACA may well have been dealt its death blow. The Congressional Budget Office released a major study of the government’s budget and its effect on the overall economy over the next 10 years. In dull bureaucratic language, it delivers a devastating analysis of the inefficiencies, ineffectualities and problematic social costs of ObamaCare. The one-two punch: Virtually as many Americans will lack health coverage in 10 years as before the law was passed — but 2 million fewer

President Obama, outlining his push Tuesday to bring high-speed Internet access to more U.S. schools, said Americans should demand the same level of technology in learning facilities as they do in coffee shops. “In a country where we expect free Wi-Fi with our coffee, we should definitely demand it in our schools,” Obama said in Adelphi, Md., highlighting $750 million in new commitments from private companies to put digital learning labs in schools. Under his plan, the Federal Communications Commission will also spend $2 billion to connect 20 million students to wireless technologies.

I don´t believe Woody Allen is a child molester. But when I read Dylan Farrow´s letter in The New York Times accusing her adoptive father of sexual abuse, I didn´t think she was making it up. On March 18, 1993, after a Connecticut prosecutor declined to charge Allen after a three-month investigation of the same allegations, I interviewed him at his Fifth Ave. apartment.
