Chinese President Xi Jingping has held talks with Malaysia´s leader Prime Minister Najib Razak as part of a Southeast Asian charm offensive, with analysts saying he had "the floor to himself" after Barack Obama scrapped his own Asia tour. A day after a new trade deal with Indonesia, the two men today agreed to nearly triple two-way trade. (Snip)Xi´s visit to Indonesia and Malaysia and his planned attendance at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit have taken on added significance with the announcement Barack Obama will stay in America to focus on the government shut down.

Not watching SOTU last night

I didn’t watch Obama’s State of the Union address last night. Unlike prior years where I had live feeds and extensive coverage. Instead, I listened to IN-A-GADDA-DA-SOTU. I did peek at Twitter a couple of times, but not long enough to turn into a pillar of salt. Reading the headlines and tweets today, there aren’t any of them that couldn’t have been written before the speech. Not watching was surprisingly refreshing. A field trip away from the asylum. Amazing, actually.

LOS ANGELES - In a packed courtroom, attorneys unveiled opposing views Monday on the emotionally divisive issue of whether California public school teachers should be protected from dismissal if they are found to be grossly ineffective in their jobs. The opening volleys in what´s expected be a monthlong trial came from lawyers for nine students seeking to abolish teacher tenure and seniority, and from attorneys for the governor, state education department and teacher unions who say such extreme measures are not needed. "The evidence will show that the impact of an effective teacher is profound and undeniable," attorney Theodore Boutrous Jr. said.

SAN DIEGO -- Tiger Woods is on the verge of suffering an unflattering career first -- missing a secondary cut on the PGA Tour. With a 7-over-par 79 on Saturday at the Farmers Insurance Open, the current world No. 1 nearly matched his worst career round as a pro when he shot 81 amid brutal weather conditions in the 2002 Open Championship at Muirfield. (Snip)Because the 36-hole cut this week included more than 78 players, by PGA Tour regulations another cut is made to reduce the field to the top 70 and ties through three rounds. NEW YORK — When the 9/11 Memorial Museum opens in mid-May, it will have shards of the fallen World Trade Center towers. It will have walls covered with portraits of the nearly 3,000 victims, and the watch worn by Todd Beamer when he declared, "Let´s roll," and helped launch an attack on the Flight 93 hijackers. It will have a burned-out ambulance that raced to save people, and helmets of firefighters who battled dust and flames to reach those trapped in the ruins. It will also have a $24 admission fee, which directors say is needed to maintain the site, a cost

While New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is getting hammered over a close aide´s involvement in snarling traffic as an apparent act of political retribution, he´s nevertheless set himself apart from the Obama administration in his response to scandal. The punishment in Trenton was swift. The governor said at a press conference Thursday that, within minutes of seeing incriminating emails, he fired his deputy chief of staff. He also sidelined his former campaign manager, nixing a lucrative contract and shutting him out of a plum job at the helm of the state GOP. Two Port Authority officials previously had resigned. Before you break out your favorite EDM song, just consider this: these glow-in-the-dark pigs were created in the name of science. In an effort to further study human genetic disorders, scientists in Southern China injected pig embryos with fluorescent jellyfish DNA; when these 10 piglets are put under a black light, they emanate an eerie green glow. This successful integration of genetic material into the animal’s natural make-up, made possible through a technique developed by reproductive scientists at the University of Hawai`i, could be instrumental in creating more cost-efficient and effective treatments for disorders like hemophilia. “[For] patients who suffer

He remained adamant that sea ice is melting, even as the boat remained trapped in frozen seas. "We´re stuck in our own experiment," the Australasian Antarctic Expedition said in a statement.

WASHINGTON — Even as President Obama’s health insurance website limps to recovery, at least two states that used the same contractor and are still plagued with malfunctions — Massachusetts and Vermont — are taking preliminary steps to recoup taxpayer dollars. Massachusetts officials are reviewing legal options against CGI Group, a Montreal-based information technology company, and will make recommendations on how to seek financial redress at a Jan. 9 meeting. So far, the state has paid $11 million of its $69 million contract with CGI. It will not pay a penny more until a functioning website has been delivered, said Jason

In November, the U.S. Postal Service reported it had a $5 billion loss for Fiscal Year 2013, its seventh consecutive year with loss. At the time, Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe blamed Congress for the loss, citing an “inflexible business model.” “We’ve achieved some excellent results for the year in terms of innovations, revenue gains, and cost reductions, but without major legislative changes we cannot overcome the limitations of our inflexible business model,” Donahoe said. “Congress is moving forward with legislation that has the potential to give us greater flexibility and put us back on a firm financial footing

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama is getting some time in front of the cameras before sitting down to watch the Super Bowl. While the White House has refused to comment on the reports there has been a distinct frostiness in the air between the couple in recent months. But the exact opposite is true: I am leaving Congress with my conviction intact that the legislative branch can be a powerful force for good. Of course there are aspects of the current Congress that I abhor. World peace? No problem for Tim Tebow. Turns out the Patriots did themselves and Tebow a huge favor by releasing him from his contract before the season. Tebow has cashed in on his #NoContract status with a pair of 30-second commercials for T-Mobile set to air during the Super Bowl. If this one is any indication, the rest of the field will be fighting for second place in the "Best in Show" category. The ad is both creative, funny and incredibly well-produced.
