Analysis: How to play

The quality of Twitter´s newly released financial information is such a mishmash that even grizzled financial writers are willing to borrow a trick from Sex and the City, where each episode was built around a question that anchored the weekly column of its heroine Carrie Bradshaw. We know what the ticker symbol will be -- TWTR, but do we know how you can play Twitter´s initial public offering without looking like a twit? (Snip) Look, the twit would be the investor who doesn´t realize that Twitter will be a hot deal, regardless. Even if the company commands less than the $14 billion valuation it

Comments:
This article was worth posting just for the headline. This should be yet another interesting stock to watch in the days ahead, it´ll take three weeks to see if it can be ready for its IPO launch.

mourns up to 300 migrant dead

Italy is holding a day of national mourning, after a boat carrying about 500 African migrants sank off the island of Lampedusa. At least 103 bodies were recovered and scores more are trapped in the vessel, which sank less than 1 km (half-a-mile) offshore. More than 150 people were rescued, but another 200 of those on board the 20m (66-ft) boat are unaccounted for. Most of the migrants were from Eritrea and Somalia, said the UN. The skipper of the boat, a 35-year-old Tunisian, was arrested, announced Italy´s Interior Minister Angelino Alfano when he visited the island later in the

Sacramento, CA - California Governor Jerry Brown signed a law on Thursday to give journalists in the state five days´ notice before government agencies serve subpoenas on their records held by third parties, such as phone companies and internet service providers. The law, which was approved by unanimous votes in the California Assembly and Senate, expands on the state´s existing shield law for journalists and will apply to subpoenas sought in state courts. The California law comes after two cases earlier this year that sparked debate about whether the U.S. Justice Department had infringed on the

Obama cancels visits to Indonesia,

Washington - President Barack Obama canceled plans to attend summits in Indonesia and Brunei on Thursday, bowing to the reality that the political impasse over the U.S. government shutdown requires him to remain in Washington. The decision means Obama will no longer depart on Saturday for what had originally been a four-nation, week-long Asia trip. He had canceled visits to Malaysia and the Philippines earlier this week because of his budget struggle with Republicans in Congress. The move to cancel the remaining stops in Indonesia and Brunei, where two summits critical to U.S. interests

Washington, DC - What are your kids studying in school today? Public schools from California to Florida are celebrating LGBT History Month, where they highlight a homosexual or lesbian each day. Today, America’s school children are learning about Edward-turned-Gwen Araujo, who was intimate with men who allegedly beat him when they discovered that he was not a woman. “If parents think our school children should be focused on science and math, not sex and murder, they need to talk to teachers, principals, and school boards to ensure that this program is stopped,”

On September 27 I was reading my Wall Street Journal as usual when I turned the page to read the following headline: “U.N. Affirms Human Role in Global Warming.” There is no human role in global warming and there is no global warming. The Earth has been in a cooling cycle for the past seventeen years. (Snip) This isn’t journalism. It’s public relations. I know because I practiced both of these magical arts for many years. All governments, all institutions, all organizations, and all enterprises of every description practice public relations. The job of journalists, however, is to lend some

Shots were fired outside the U.S. Capitol Thursday afternoon and Capitol police were telling people to shelter in place. The incident appeared to begin around 2:19 p.m. and Capitol police say the Capitol was locked down. Officers with semi-automatic weapons were seen running for the exits on the first floor of the House side of the Capitol. Reports of shots inside were unconfirmed. As of 2:26, the Senate floor was still open and the Senate was on the floor, but police were in the hallways, reporters on the scene said. Rep. Washington - The Republican National Committee is offering the United States government a check to pay for guards at the National World War II Memorial, chairman Reince Priebus announced Wednesday. "We´re willing to pay the bill," said Priebus, who was speaking to reporters as he stood in front of a fence at the memorial. The memorial had been the site of a dramatic encounter Tuesday between visiting World War II veterans and a fence erected to keep visitors out. The National Parks Service argued the government shutdown left them with no personnel to guard and maintain the open air memorial.

Government shutdown: Jobs report is

Washington - Each month, there’s usually one number that economists and Wall Street investors watch above all else: the Labor Department’s tally of jobs created by US employers. It’s a gauge of the job market – to most Americans the most basic indicator of prosperity and well-being. Beyond that, it’s a broad barometer of the economy’s health. And this month, it’ll be missing in action. At least that’s the way it appears so far, due to a partial shutdown of the federal government, which took effect Tuesday because the parties in Congress are at loggerheads over federal spending and President

President Obama told CNBC’s John Harwood that while he’s been president, he’s “bent over backwards to work with the Republican party.” Obama boasted: During the course of my presidency, I have bent over backwards to work with the Republican party. I think I’m pretty well known for being a calm guy. Sometimes people think I’m too calm. And am I exasperated? Absolutely, I’m exasperated. Because this is entirely unnecessary. I am exasperated with the idea that, unless I say that, ‘Twenty million people, you can’t have health insurance,’ these folks will not reopen the government. That is irresponsible. More than a dozen House Republicans who want to drop attempts to undermine the health-care law and reopen the government are meeting among themselves and with House Speaker John Boehner -- and he’s listening. For the past few weeks, Boehner’s hand has been guided by a group of Tea Party-aligned Republican House members who’ve urged little compromise in their three-year drive to undo the 2010 Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. Now, the agitation is coming from the other side of the caucus. A bipartisan group of about 40 House lawmakers are holding private talks to find a compromise

Tom Hanks is already declaring his presidential pick for 2016, there’s just one, small problem: a little thing called term limits. Despite an emergency meeting at the White House, congressional leaders reported no progress late Wednesday on trying to reach a budget deal -- while over on Capitol Hill, tempers were flaring and lawmakers were melting down on the floor of the House. The top four congressional leaders took a stab, during an hour-long White House meeting, at negotiating with President Obama over the impasse. There was no breakthrough. House Speaker John Boehner emerged saying he had a "nice, polite conversation" but complaining that Obama would not budge off his demand that Congress pass a straight budget bill -- one that does not

Luciano didn’t realize the federal assistance program that just purchased the food items for her children, Aimee, 2, and Jaiden, 11 months, is now in jeopardy because of the government shutdown. “Oh my god, I think I’m going to cry,” Luciano said upon learning the news. “This is really bad.” Nearly 9 million low-income mothers and children receive benefits under the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children. New York Magazine writer Jonathan Chait spent his government shutdown day mocking WWII veterans who were shut out by the National Park Service (NPS) when they came to visit the National WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C. On Tuesday morning, Representative Michelle Bachman (R-MN) and several Republican members of Congress helped tear down the barricades shutting the elderly veterans out of the WWII memorial. After the barricades were removed, dozens of veterans flooded in to conduct their often emotional visits. But, thinking he was being funny, Chait took to Twitter to poke fun at the veterans, joking that the NPS should

At a closed-door lunch meeting in the Senate’s Mansfield Room, Republican after Republican pressed Cruz to explain how he would propose to end the bitter budget impasse with Democrats, according to senators who attended the meeting. The revisions downward begin. Yesterday, Obamacare exchanges were melting down because of the intense interest in signing up. All the citizens were flooding the gates for all the insurance! Why, in California there were 5 million visitors. No technologist could prepare for such an onslaught. Here’s what really happened: California’s health insurance exchange vastly overstated the number of online hits it received Tuesday during the rollout of Obamacare. State officials said the Covered California website got 645,000 hits during the first day of enrollment, far fewer than the 5 million it reported Tuesday. The state exchange had cited the 5 million figure as a
