Louisiana braces for Tropical Storm Karen
Times-Picayune [New Orleans, LA], by Richard Rainey

Original Article

Posted By:Attercliffe, 10/3/2013 11:34:53 PM

The quiet relief that follows the height of another hurricane season passing uneventfully ended in southeastern Louisiana on Thursday as Tropical Storm Karen formed near Cuba and took aim at the Gulf Coast. The National Hurricane Center has put on notice the northern Gulf Coast from Morgan City to Indian Pass, Fla. Karen was traveling at about 12 mph and could hit the United States sometime late Friday or early Saturday. Cities and parishes throughout the greater New Orleans area began to prepare for a storm that could make landfall as a Category 1 hurricane or nothing more than heavy

Comments:
A minimal Cat 1 can cause flooding and bring down huge trees and power lines, as in Gaston (2004) when it hit us here in the Charleston area, so please don´t dismiss this storm. Wikipedia: "In total over 3,000 structures sustained minor to significant damage. . . ." The Lowcountry had between 5-10" of rain and flooding to 5 feet. Granted, Gaston was not a monster like Katrina but this is a bad time to have even a "minor" storm.

The libs are saying, Please ,please, please let there be a hurricane to hit New Orleans. The libs are wishing there was a weather god or any god they could pray to, if only they believed in any god besides Obamagod.

They really need a good distraction right now.

Good luck with that. The full time National Guardsmen that are the planners, logisticians and contracting officers are all on furlough.

Because the storm will be going against a cold front, I fear tornadoes will spawn out of it.

Winter whiteout carnage as massive

A massive pile up during a whiteout storm in Indiana on Thursday afternoon killed three people and injured more than 20 others. Chaotic scenes of jackknifed trailers and the mangled wreckage of cars packed across three lanes of the highway could be seen after visibility dropped to nearly zero at about 3.30pm. More than 40 vehicles, including semitrailers and cars, were involved in the deadly crash near Michigan City, but wintry conditions and the scale of the crash site slowed rescue efforts. One driver was still trapped in their car at 6.30pm, three hours after the crash happened, as rescue crews worked

Cutting benefits is a moral mission like

Conservative welfare reforms are part of an ´historic mission´ in the tradition of the fight to end slavery, Iain Duncan Smith claimed today. The Work and Pensions Secretary said his determination to cut benefits and get people back to work is like the work of William Wilberforce who campaigned for the end of the slave trade and Lord Shaftesbury, who enacted laws to protect women and children in Victorian factories. [Snip] And in a clear reference to the Channel 4 documentary Benefits Street, the Work and Pensions Secretary said that under Labour the ‘middle-class majority were largely unaware of the

Pensioners with cancer are being written off as too old to treat, campaigners said yesterday. They cited figures showing survival rates for British patients aged 75 and over are among the worst in Europe. Young lung cancer sufferers are only 10 percent more likely to die within five years than their continental counterparts. But pensioners with the disease have 44 percent less chance of survival. The figure for stomach cancer--at 45 percent--is even worse. And Britons with prostate cancer are a fifth less likely to survive than Europeans if they are 85 and over. Just 43 percent live for five

Twitter mobs are confused, angry and stupid.

To call Twitter a wild west is an understatement – it’s regressed far beyond that. We’re back to tribes and mob rule – with added speed and bloodlust. The inhabitants are confused and angry and move in swarms. You never know when they’ll suddenly swerve in unison and come at you. But how to deal with this random, terrifying phenomenon? Some hope we can get rid of it by civilising Twitter: introduce a basic justice system, swap the tribes for a sort of centralised government, perhaps move everyone on from hunter-gathering to nomadic farming. This might take a while.

Michelle Obama´s decision to cite Jane Fonda as a woman she admires has caused a Republican backlash because of the actress´ left-wing activism. Fonda, who has been infamous since she took a trip to North Vietnam in 1972 and was pictured wearing a helmet and posing with a gun during the war which was taken as an insult to American troops, was one of two actresses that she said she looks up to as she thinks about growing older. New Yorkers with musophobia--the fear of rats--should look away now. The irrational fear of rats, in New York City where there are an estimated two times as many rats are there are people, may not seem so crazy after a look at the New York City Health Department´s Rat Information Portal, or RIP. The dense human population means rats thrive in New York, roaming city streets by night, hanging out in subway tunnels and feasting on curbside garbage. COLUMBIA--A law that allows for concealed weapons permit holders to take their weapons into restaurants that serve alcohol and bars easily passed the South Carolina House of Representatives on Thursday. The 90-18 vote came amid some backlash in the Lowcountry, as many bar and restaurant owners and managers were finding out about the new law. The Pentagon on Wednesday is expected to announce widespread changes to rules governing religious items and religion-based physical attributes that service members can maintain while in uniform — including beards, some religious tattoos, and turbans. NBC News obtained an early draft of the new Department of Defense instruction which states that the military will make every effort to accommodate “individual expressions of sincerely held beliefs” (conscience, moral principles, or religious beliefs) of service members. It goes on to say that unless doing so could have an adverse impact on military readiness, unit cohesion, good order and discipline, health and safety,

In politics, lying is the new sex. Even the lesser sin, exaggeration, is grounds for questions about your suitability to run for office. Americans may be becoming more like the French in tolerating peccadilloes (just ask Rep. Mark Sanford of South Carolina or Sen. David Vitter of Louisiana about surviving a sex scandal), but get a detail wrong about whether you divorced at 21 or at 19, and woe unto you. That’s what happened to Wendy Davis over the weekend. You may know her as the Texas state senator in pink sneakers who delivered an 11-hour filibuster against abortion restrictions in June.

In addition, more people believe that the president is not even paying attention to what’s going on than the contrary: 47-45. TOPEKA — A man who provided sperm to a lesbian couple in response to an online ad is the father of a child born to one of the women and must pay child support, a Kansas judge ruled Wednesday. Topeka resident William Marotta had argued that he had waived his parental rights and didn’t intend to be a father. Shawnee County District Judge Mary Mattivi rejected that claim, saying the parties didn’t involve a licensed physician in the artificial insemination process and thus Marotta didn’t qualify as a sperm donor, The Topeka Capital-Journal reported.
