Forget Rouhani´s overtures.
We are still at war with Iran

After all the nonsense that has been written about a possible rapprochement between the West and Iran following President Hassan Rouhani´s masterful public relations exercise in New York last week, the assassination of Iran´s cyber chief has brought the whole issue of Iran´s relations with the rest of the world back to a more realistic perspective. [Snip] Preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons-- there is not a single intelligence service in the West that doubts Iran is seeking to acquire a nuclear arsenal--is now the most pressing security issue of the modern age. Islam has two forms of peace. The first kind is simply peace. Translate into western speak, it is a temporary halt in hostilities while the forces of islam rebuild and retool. Real peace in the world of islam is the complete destruction and subjugation of the enemies of islam. They call that form of peace "Justice". meaning complete victory.

Nearly four years ago at the general election the Conservative Party manifesto included the following comment: “… immigration today is too high and needs to be reduced. We do not need to attract people to do jobs that could be carried out by British citizens, given the right training and support. So we will take steps to take net migration back to the levels of the 1990s--tens of thousands a year, not hundreds of thousands.” [Snip] The most recent data shows that net migration is still up at 180,000 per year--down by around a third since the general election thanks

President Barack Obama delivered a landmark speech in his presidency Tuesday night, throwing down the gauntlet to congressional Republicans by threatening to implement policies without their help whenever they refuse to ´make progress together´ with him. ´America does not stand still--and neither will I,´ Obama warned in his State of the Union address. ´So wherever and whenever I can take steps without legislation to expand opportunity for more American families, that´s what I´m going to do.´ The president outlined more than a dozen initiatives that he plans to kick-start without appealing to Capitol Hill. They include modest moves on infrastructure

New Orleans remains under a state of emergency this morning as temperatures begin to drop and the city braces for what Mayor Mitch Landrieu described as potentially the worst winter weather to hit southeast Louisiana in 25 years. "These winter storms can be unpredictable with unfamiliar conditions to our area," he said Monday. Tuesday´s precautions were predicated by dozens of motor vehicle crashes that occurred Friday evening when ice formed on roadways and bridges. Landrieu said emergency responders were anticipating as much as a quarter-inch of ice to form Tuesday that could cause widespread power outages and create dangerous driving

President Barack Obama will deliver his sixth State of the Union address Tuesday night, threatening to ignore Congress through a series of executive actions designed to do an end-run around the legislative branch of government. When he uncorks the evening´s carefully manicured rhetoric, it will be a history-dripping stemwinder delivered in a setting that boasts all the pageantry of a royal funeral. But in the age of tweets and 90-second cable news interviews, fewer and fewer Americans pay attention to lengthy policy speeches. State of the Union: time for Republicans

The State of the Union is one of the great fixtures in the US political calendar, when all eyes focus on the President--and his special guests in the First Lady´s box above. However, with Mr Obama largely neutered by Obamcare woes, implacable Republican opposition in Congress and sinking approval ratings, arguably of much greater interest will be the Republican response, which is delivered in a televised address just a few minutes after the President stops speaking. This year the honour has gone to a Congresswoman, Cathy McMorris Rodgers, who is the highest-rank Republican woman in the House of Representatives, but

The number of people enrolled in private health insurance under Obamacare has soared by more than one-third in recent weeks to around 3 million, according to government data released on Friday. Marilyn Tavenner, administrator of the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), announced the preliminary tally in a blog posting. She forecast that enrollment through new federal and state health insurance marketplaces would continue to grow in coming weeks as a public outreach campaign accelerates. The new data adds to evidence that President Barack Obama´s administration has turned the corner on enrollment after a botched October 1 launch.

WASHINGTON — President Obama plans to sign an executive order requiring that janitors, construction workers and others working for federal contractors be paid at least $10.10 an hour, using his own power to enact a more limited version of a policy that he has yet to push through Congress. The order, which Mr. Obama will highlight in his annual State of the Union address on Tuesday night, is meant to underscore an increasing willingness by the president to bypass Congress if lawmakers continue to resist his agenda, aides said. After a year in which most of his legislative priorities went nowhere,

Of all the troubling aspects of the Obama presidency, none is more dangerous than the president´s persistent pattern of lawlessness, his willingness to disregard the written law and instead enforce his own policies via executive fiat. On Monday, Mr. Obama acted unilaterally to raise the minimum wage paid by federal contracts, the first of many executive actions the White House promised would be a theme of his State of the Union address Tuesday night. The president´s taste for unilateral action to circumvent Congress should concern every citizen, regardless of party or ideology. “Repealing and replacing” Obamacare with market-oriented reforms has been the Republican mantra for years now. If you’re a long-time follower of this space, you know that we’re skeptical that Obamacare will ever be repealed, GOP slogans to the contrary. Today, however, a trio of experienced Senate Republicans—Tom Coburn (Okla.), Richard Burr (N.C.), and Orrin Hatch (Utah)—have put forth the most thoughtful and constructive plan yet developed to repeal and replace Obamacare. The plan seeks to ensure that as many Americans have health coverage as Obamacare does. It’s a proposal grounded in the real-world tradeoffs that all serious reformers must make.

President Barack Obama delivered a State of the Union Address on Tuesday that was important less for what he said than for what it says about him. The speech was long, more than an hour. At times it was defiant, at others it felt almost conciliatory. But mostly the speech was forgettable, disposable – a long list of modest policy proposals that will not be remembered for much longer than their echo in the House chamber. On domestic policy, we knew what to expect. The stars of last year’s speech – immigration and gun control – were mere afterthoughts this year,

Former Vice President Al Gore raised eyebrows last week when he suggested that “fertility management” was the key to fighting global warming and promoting economic development in poor countries. Gore’s comments drew criticism from free-marketeers who said his remarks amount to “eco-imperialism.” “Gore’s agenda for saving the world from global warming has always included population control,” Myron Ebell, director of global warming and international environmental policy at the free-market Competitive Enterprise Institute, told The Daily Caller News Foundation. “Advocating population control specifically for Africa is just another form of imperialism. A report by the Commons public accounts committee found that the Queen’s advisers were failing to control her finances while the royal palaces were “crumbling”. MPs said her advisers had overspent to such an extent that her reserve fund had fallen from £35 million in 2001 to just £1 million today. The Royal household had made efficiency savings of just 5 per cent over the past five years compared
