The shutdown battle has become, essentially, a high-stakes blame game.(snip)But in a note to clients, Potomac Research Group´s Greg Valliere says that President Obama still has one "trump card" of his own left to play, Social Security: THE HEAVY ARTILLERY: We have thought for weeks that Obama would play the Social Security trump card if there was no deal on the debt ceiling by mid-October. This is one of several reasons why we think a default is unlikely, and it´s one of several reasons why Boehner will capitulate; the only questions are when and under what terms. We think he may

I thought SS was off budget and not subject to the whims of congress getting a CR. It´s self funding and I doubt 0bama has the authority to shut it down, not that he won´t try.

Send the Senate a single bill that funds Social Security. If Reid/Obama turn it down then the blood´s on their hands.

In this scenario from what I understand, which is very little, direct deposit checks will continue. Checks that are mailed will halt. There won´t be any employees manning the offices to mail them. Social Security offices will close. He´ll stop the personnel from working.

Nothing this administration does or would do surprises me anymore. I expect Obama at some point to unilaterally raise the debt limit and tell congress to sue him.

Obama cannot play a social security trump card, because there isn´t one. Obama can only spend what Congress authorizes or agrees to allow the Fed to print to fund Treasury notes. The House holds the constitutional authority. They had better use it, if they do not want to be replaced.

Direct deposit SS payments are on autopilot and will continue. A Presidential order to stop them would be illegal, but with this administration, illegality are commonplace. And with Congress, Presidential illegalities are routinely permitted to stand.

I´m sure this is gonna rile many of our more aged commenters here but, SS has been a scam from the get-go. I´m sorry alot of you relied on only SS to get you by in retirement. But a simple run of the numbers would have showed you that there is no way a person can get by on SS alone.

Years ago, I recognized what a scam it was and took steps to ensure my retirement would be a comfortable one ($$$ wise). And yeah I had to pay into SS (forced deductions are evil), and I expect to get some back in retirement. But I do not expect to use it to live on. Maybe I´ll pay my cable bill with it. Anyways, SS needs to go away. Stop it now, let US decide where to put OUR money. The Gov shouldn´t be in the retirement income business.

no. 23, contrary to the assumptions of our juniors we seniors are not stupid. I know there is no money in the fund. I know it was never intended to be a pension but only a supplement. And I have supplemented it. I can survive despite being close to 92, and therefore incompetent.

When the shut down commenced I thought Obama would stop SS checks. I was surprised to hear that they would continue. If he wants to stop them the fact that it is not within his right will not stop him. He does whatever he wants and defies anyone to stop him.

Because some people do have only SS this is a crap shoot and it remains to be seen who gets the blame.

We need to get Rep. Stockman to move on the information he has to start a Congressional Investigation into the FRAUD committed against the US Citizens. That would eliminate a lot of problems and rescind many bills signed into law. It would take Plugs Biden with him as well.

Chelsea Clinton says when people ask her these days whether she wants to go into politics, her answer isn’t an automatic “no.” The 34-year-old former first daughter told Fast Company in an interview published Monday, “for so long the answer was just a visceral no. Not because I had made any conscientious, deliberate decision, but since people had been asking for as long as literally I could remember, it was no." Now, the only child of former President Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton explains, "I live in a city and a state and a country where I

Although the Civil Rights Act, the landmark legislation which just reached its 50th anniversary, made great strides in desegregating the economy, economic discrimination is still widespread, and anti-discrimination legislation alone can never rectify the economic damage inflicted upon blacks by slavery and our Jim Crow apartheid regime. The Civil Rights Act was a mild reform, all things considered, but one conservatives fought with vigor and one many conservatives are still bitter about to this day. When the Civil Rights Act passed in 1964, the primary purpose was to root out discrimination in public accommodations (like hotels and movie theaters)

LAS VEGAS — The Nevada Republican Party stripped opposition to abortion and gay marriage from its platform Saturday as state convention delegates instead focused on judging fellow Republicans on their worthiness to serve in office and adherence to GOP values. The platform, with few changes, was adopted overwhelmingly as the Las Vegas convention stretched late into the evening. The vote mirrors that of the Clark County GOP, which voted earlier to remove platform language defining marriage as between a man and a woman and statements opposing abortion. Many Republicans are re-evaluating their strong stances on conservative social issues as public

Say what you will about Sens. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), but they know a train wreck when they see it. They also know when to separate themselves from the cranks and the losers on the right. Although both supported the shutdown and were heartily supported by tea party groups in their own Senate races, neither one has endorsed Matt Bevin in Kentucky, Milton Wolf in Kansas or Chris McDaniel in Mississippi. In fact, Cruz’s office confirms he hasn’t endorsed anyone in the primaries. He may weigh in after the primaries. Rand Paul has endorsed two very establishment

A brazen flash mob has been caught on camera storming a California store and making off with $20,000 worth of sunglasses. Surveillance footage shows eight women piling into a Sunglass Hut and crowding around display cases. Shielding workers from what they´re doing, they quickly stuff dozens of fashion specs into their bags. A store clerk pleads with them to stop, before running out of the shot to get help and dial 911. The thieves then all bolt outside and escape in a waiting SUV. The incident occurred at the Valencia Town Center mall, in Santa Clarita, at 3 p.m. on

President Obama pulled a surprise move Monday at the White House’s Easter Prayer Breakfast when he selected Gene Robinson to lead the closing prayer. Robinson is famously known as the first openly gay Episcopal bishop. Talking Points Memo’s Tom Kludt spotted the following tweet from Robinson, who was in attendance: (Tweet) Robinson, 66, became diocesan bishop of New Hampshire in March 2004. He retired in January 2013 and is currently a senior fellow at the progressive

A Russian fighter jet made multiple, close-range passes near an American warship in the Black Sea for more than 90 minutes Saturday amid escalating tensions in the region, a U.S. military official said Monday. In the first public account of the incident, the official said the Russian Fencer flew within 1,000 yards of the USS Donald Cook, a Navy destroyer, at about 500 feet above sea level. Ship commanders considered the actions provocative and inconsistent with international agreements, prompting the ship to issue several radio queries and warnings. The fighter appeared to be unarmed and never was in danger of

It’s hardly been a secret that in recent years the moderate center of the Democrat party has been driven away and what remains is a conglomeration of disparate blocs which, to date, the party has been able to treat as if there were no conflicting interests between them. As the midterm elections approach and the administration’s incompetence, along with the distaste for the president’s signature ObamaCare legislation, drive the party’s chances down further, the make-believe coalition of opposites may well crumble if the opposition doesn’t blow it. Democrats hope to retain control of the Senate and recapture the House by driving
