An Alleged Terrorist’s Family
Waits in Hope and Fear

Time, by Jay Newton-Small

On a leafy green street in a middle class suburb of Minneapolis live two children who know nothing of their father. Though the boy and girl are of Somali descent, they don’t live near the city’s Somali hubs, home to America’s largest Somali population. And they are more concerned with Harry Potter and their latest haul of library books than news of an attack on an upscale Nairobi mall half a world away, an attack that, unbeknownst to them, was conducted by the terrorist group to which their father allegedly belongs. To the family, discussion of Cabdulaahi Ahmed Faarax is “haram”,

Let´s see. We´ll need a feature of the family in "Highlights for Children", showing them raking leaves and serving soup at the local mosque.

So what do we learn? That the guy was in the hands of law enforcement, but that the FBI let him go. The only thing the FBI did was confirm to the guy that he was on the no-fly list so that he knew he had to get across the border in order to escape back to Somalia.

They did not even bother to include the perfunctory statement from the mosque - the usual "no one here knew him, he only attended prayers a few times, we are not jihadists, we are peaceful blah blah blah".

Prince William´s smashingly bad idea

You’d think someone whose very life and livelihood are all about history would be a little more mindful of it – even the bad bits. Of all people, Prince William, the heir presumptive to the British throne, should know something about the dangers of forgetting history, accidentally or deliberately. And yet, in his passion for the deeply, harrowingly important cause of ending the killing of animals for the ivory trade, he wants to get rid of the evidence of the crimes he wishes to expose. HRH the Duke of Cambridge told primatologist Jane Goodall that he would like to smash every one of

In his State of the Union address, President Obama gave the country fair warning when he said he would try to rule by executive action if Congress did not follow his orders. He began to make good on that pledge yesterday by announcing that he would enact new fuel standards for heavy-duty trucks. Along with other new regulations that are being promulgated without benefit of the approval of Congress, the big truck rule is part of the president’s effort to show the world that he is working to save the planet from climate change. But while energy efficiency and a potential

Of Course the Dumbest, Weirdest Feud

By far the weirdest feud in American media and politics right now is the alliance of Donald Trump, Breitbart.com, and, now, Sarah Palin against BuzzFeed and the reporter behind a piece suggesting that maybe Donald Trump´s political aspirations were insincere. The whole thing is funny mostly because it necessitates the question: Why on Earth is anyone defending Donald Trump? This whole kerfuffle began a week ago, sparked by BuzzFeed reporter McKay Coppins´ hysterically comprehensive review of Trump´s weirdo pseudo-campaign. Appearances in New Hampshire, flights to Florida, a fervent insistence that Trump was considered important and legitimate as a candidate. It´s

In an interview, Jean-Claude Killy, the IOC´s chief supervisor of the 2014 Olympics, offered the first public explanation for the rocky launch of these Games. Early arrivals here encountered unfinished hotels, unopened shops and myriad problems. Today marks the five-year anniversary of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Commonly known as the stimulus, the nearly $1 trillion law was hailed as an opportunity to bring America into the “21st century.” Just two years after the bill was signed into law, President Barack Obama admitted, “shovel-ready was not as shovel-ready as we expected.” While the law failed to create jobs as promised, it has provided plenty of examples of waste, fraud, and abuse. Five years and at least $816.3 billion later, here are 10 ways the government wasted taxpayer money. 10) $1.3 Million for Stimulus Highway Signs

In a Facebook post, Palin notes that Pierson’s “life’s story is full of hardships she has fought to overcome, which taught her firsthand the importance of self-reliance, hard work, and the blessings of liberty.” One of those hardships includes a 1997 arrest for shoplifting. As the Dallas Morning News reported on Valentine’s Day, “In 1997, five days before her 21st birthday, Katrina Pierson, then named Katrina Lanette Shaddix, was arrested on a charge of theft of greater than $50 and less than $500.” Pierson,

There´s a long list of Cabinet secretaries and senior aides to President Obama who have failed the nation so resoundingly they should be shown the door. Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnel (R-Ky.) are now in position to end the Tea Party’s death grip on the Republican Party’s political future. Last week, Boehner and McConnell faced down the Tea Party’s threat to cripple the government when they supported raising the nation’s debt ceiling. That move prevented GOP political suicide. If the nation’s credit rating, stocks and the recovery went down the sewer because of Republicans’ refusal to raise the debt ceiling, the GOP’s chances in the midterm elections would have been severely damaged. Maybe they´re working part-time just to supplement the family´s income. And they think, if that

Barack Obama has penned a handwritten apology to an angry professor after suggesting that learning a trade would be a better career choice than studying for an art history degree. During a speech at a General Electric plant in Wisconsin, the President said that ´folks can make a lot more potentially with skilled manufacturing or the trades than they might with an art history degree.´ He was inundated with letters from art historians and journalists all furious at his remarks - but one professor´s comments caught his eye - and he sent a handwritten apology to her.
