Tobias Bass had one simple request. The 10-year-old Oklahoma boy who wanted to run a 5K with his disabled brother said he was missing one piece of equipment. “I just want to tell you that there’s nobody dying, I don’t need no money, I just need to borrow a stroller. That’s it,” Bass told Channel 9 News. The boy had written a letter to the station’s news anchors asking for someone to donate a specialized stroller that will allow him to push his 11-year-old brother, Titus, who has cerebral palsy, in an upcoming race at Oklahoma City’s John Marshall Mid-High
Comments: This 10 year old´s hand written note is more eloquent than what people 3 times his age can write with a word processor.
A Florida teen has had a lucky escape after accidentally swallowing two buckminsterfullerenes or ´Buckyballs´ - rare-earth magnets that are incredibly strong and can perforate the stomach and even kill if swallowed. Christin Rivas, 14, was given six of the magnets by a church friend just before Thanksgiving, and took them to her school in Melbourne to ´freak out´ her friends with tricks such as pulling a pen up a wall from a neighboring classroom. But the fun ended when Christin Rivas accidentally swallowed the magnets and had to have them surgically removed along with a portion of her colon
A state plan to honor Union soldiers at Florida´s largest Civil War battlefield fell apart this week after "furious" pro-Confederate locals commandeered a town hall meeting, including an African-American activist who called Northern troops rapists and led the crowd in a round of Dixie. The state park system, which runs Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park 50 miles west of Jacksonville, had actually set up the town hall on Monday to decide where to place the monument. But "the discussion never got that far," according to the News Service of Florida: Passions ran high, at one point erupting in a spontaneous
A 76-year-old woman was killed in a shootout as a gang tried to rob her outside her South Carolina home in the early hours of Saturday. Dorothy Hendrix was shot twice by the gang of two men and a woman, but she managed to shoot one of her assailants in the stomach before dying of her wounds. Steven Hagood, Tereba Geer, and Bradacious Galloway have all been charged with murder. ´She fought. She was a fighter. She shot him,´ the victim’s brother, Ronnie Lollis, told WYFF News Channel 4. Ms Hendrix, who was known as Dot to her friends, had
Comet ISON — once touted as the "comet of the century" — fizzled out during its swing around the sun, leaving behind what scientists said was a trail of dust that continued rolling through space. "It does seem that Comet ISON probably hasn´t survived this journey," Karl Battams, an astrophysicist at the Naval Research Laboratory, acknowledged at the end of a NASA-sponsored Google+ Hangout that attracted more than 27,000 viewers at its peak. Battams´ assessment dashed the hopes of millions who were looking forward to a celestial Yuletide treat. Satellite images appeared to show ISON´s remnants spreading out in an
A Tennessee high school student was arrested after police say he tried to set his teacher on fire in school. Investigators say the incident happened just before 11am Monday at West High School in Knoxville as Gabriela Penalba, 23, was teaching a class. According to police, Penalba had turned her back to her students when a 15-year-old boy came up behind her with a cigarette lighter and set her shirt and hair ablaze. Other students rushed to the teacher´s aid and helped extinguish the flames, saving Penalba from burns to her body, the station WBIR reported. When the 23-year-old woman,
Decatur, Ga. - A new online juror questionnaire offered by the DeKalb County Court listed "slave" as an occupational option. Court Administrator Cathy McCumber told 11Alive, the questionnaire went online a month ago, but is based off an internal list that´s been used for 13 years. She says the list is 62 pages long, so she´s not sure if the word slave has always been on it, or if it was added before the questionnaire went online. 11Alive and the court learned about the problem Monday morning, after a potential juror filling out the form hit the letter "s" for sales. He says he got "slave" instead.
CROSSVILLE — There has been a tsunami of criticism and bad news about the awful Obamacare medical insurance rollout. More to the point we now have reason to conclude that our top political executive is, and has been, shall we say, “less than candid” for the better part of three years, if not longer. After examining his words and promises regarding his “signature legislation” named the “Affordable Care Act” (ACA, commonly known as “Obamacare”), one can only conclude that our chief political executive purposely and willfully misled us all. With full knowledge and understanding, he misled the entire country and
A war hero has told how Hitler couldn´t stop him - but health and safety zealots have. Royal Navy legend Albert ´Dusty´ Miller served his country with distinction in World War Two. He earned countless medals and recognition for his bravery, first in the Atlantic convoys and later as a submariner in the Burma campaign. But the 89-year-old, who has been a parade marshal for the Royal British Legion for nearly 40 years, has now been told he can no longer represent veterans - because he´s too old. Senior officials broke the news to Mr Miller shortly before last week´s
Seven score and ten years ago, the forefathers of this media institution brought forth to its audience a judgment so flawed, so tainted by hubris, so lacking in the perspective history would bring, that it cannot remain unaddressed in our archives. We write today in reconsideration of “The Gettysburg Address,” delivered by then-President Abraham Lincoln in the midst of the greatest conflict seen on American soil. Our predecessors, perhaps under the influence of partisanship, or of strong drink, as was common in the profession at the time, called President Lincoln’s words “silly remarks,” deserving “a veil of oblivion,” apparently believing
He was an icon of the liberal Left on both sides of the Atlantic, a man of letters whose acid-tongued wit earned him comparisons with Oscar Wilde, and whose vituperative attacks on conservatism led to him being courted by the Clintons and the Kennedys alike. Famously imperious, Gore Vidal was once asked by a magazine to interview the then Prime Minister John Major, only to complain that Major should be interviewing him. But for all his vanity, he could be very funny - when a New York taxi driver once told him to ‘Have a nice day,’ Vidal shot back:
CROSSVILLE — During the “shutdown,” it became obvious to most Americans that the administration of President Obama was intentionally punishing Americans in an effort to get their way. It didn’t seem to matter to them that these innocent Americans were not doing anything wrong, they were simply being used as pawns in the administration’s war on his opponents and it didn’t seem to matter that Americans had to suffer unnecessarily. The attempt to barricade the World War II memorial revealed the intentional harm that was visited upon Americans. The limited shutdown did not need to affect the memorial because it
Just minutes after the election returns arrived in Boston Tuesday night, Martin Walsh’s cellphone rang. It was the vice president of the United States, Joseph R. Biden, offering his congratulations. “You son of a gun, Marty!” he thundered. “You did it!” The only problem was, it was the wrong Marty Walsh. Biden had called the cellphone of Marty Walsh, a former aide to US Senator Edward M. Kennedy who is now the president of Gateway Public Solutions, a government relations firm in Boston.
The question all week long was this: Who are you going to believe, an illegal alien or the president of the United States of America? Obviously, if it’s a president who once went by an alias, Barry Soetoro, you go with Uncle Omar, 100 percent, no questions asked. And so it was that the White House finally admitted to another, uh, misstatement — despite previous denials, Barack/Barry did sleep on his beloved Uncle Omar’s couch in Cambridge when he first moved here to attend Harvard Law School (speaking of which, we’re still waiting to see the president’s grades and his LSAT scores). But the
How do you get your arms around the catastrophe known as Obamacare? Is it even possible? At this point, I’m not sure it is. The list of individual disasters which threaten to ruin one-sixth of the U.S. economy and what has been, up until now, the best healthcare system in the world is exhaustive, and exhausting. The examples I will identify here barely scratch the surface. First but by no means foremost, we have the supposedly new and improved HealthCare.gov. Except it’s not, even the visible part. Stories still abound of people still failing to get in or to get through the enrollment
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a new five-year strategic plan to improve safety for elderly drivers and passengers. Although they are statistically among the safest on the road, the number of older drivers is increasing dramatically — and with it, that group´s numbers of injuries and deaths. Since 2003, the population of older adults, defined as age 65 and older, has increased by 20% and the number of licensed older drivers increased by 21% to 35 million in 2012, according to NHTSA. Last year, NHTSA reported that 5,560 people older than 65 died and 214,000 were injured
President Barack Obama’s Facebook page on Saturday posted a message honoring the dead from Pearl Harbor—accompanied by a picture of Obama descending the stairs next to the Pearl Harbor Memorial. The picture barely fits the name of the Arizona Memorial so it can frame Obama in the foreground. The post´s statement reads: Today, with solemn pride and reverence, let us remember those who fought and died at Pearl Harbor, acknowledge everyone who carried their legacy forward, and reaffirm our commitment to upholding the ideals for which they served. President Obama The Obama Administration´s current shipbuilding plan shrinks the size of
Barack Obama did not tell the whole story this autumn when he tried to make the case that Bashar al-Assad was responsible for the chemical weapons attack near Damascus on 21 August. In some instances, he omitted important intelligence, and in others he presented assumptions as facts. Most significant, he failed to acknowledge something known to the US intelligence community: that the Syrian army is not the only party in the country’s civil war with access to sarin, the nerve agent that a UN study concluded – without assessing responsibility – had been used in the rocket attack. In the months before the attack,
Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, the hapless, goalpost-shifting so-called "architect" of Obamacare, told Fox News´ Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday that President Barack Obama´s promise "if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor" was absolutely true--with one important caveat: if you like your doctor, "you can pay for it." Wallace grilled Dr. Emanuel, challenging his false claims that California´s enrollment was keeping pace with the percentage of the young population necessary to keep the system afloat, and pointing out that the president´s promise on doctors would collapse once people lost their insurance or their
A veteran Washington adviser who has worked for four Presidents on both sides of the political aisle said that the stunning Government Accountability Report report that found President Barack Obama has not had a one-on-one meeting with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius since the passage of Obamacare over three years ago is an indictment of the entire White House operation and shows that the Obama administration has bordered on "malfeasance." "I have no doubt the White House is right, that Secretary Sebelius was in several group meetings with the president about health care," Gergen caveated, "but the whole
Just how much do many Hollywood liberals hate conservatives? In an interview with Playboy, Ben Affleck said, "When I watch a guy [on film] I know is a big Republican, part of me thinks, I probably wouldn’t like this person if I met him": PLAYBOY: You developed a political profile campaigning for presidential candidates Al Gore, John Kerry and Barack Obama. How did that come about? AFFLECK: I grew up in a house with a mother who was a teacher and a Freedom Rider—very left-wing Democrats living in a heterogeneous working-class neighborhood. I picked up a lot of those values there, and I
The U.S. isn´t called "America the Beautiful" for nothing. Each year, millions of tourists come from home and abroad to see the country´s majestic landscape and iconic sites, from the Grand Canyon to the Statue of Liberty. But there are also cool, quirky attractions, like Vermont´s Ben & Jerry´s Factory and Tennessee´s Graceland, the former home of Rock and Roll King Elvis Presley. From California to New York and everywhere in between, the country is chock-full of incredible attractions that keep luring in visitors. Here are the best tourist attractions in every state.
Although the jobless rate in November fell to its lowest level since he took office, President Obama called on Republican lawmakers Saturday to spend tens of billions on unemployment benefits that are set to expire this month. “It shouldn’t be a partisan issue,” Mr. Obama said in his weekly address. But he said the “economic lifeline” is in jeopardy. “All because Republicans in this Congress — which is on track to be the most unproductive in history — have so far refused to extend it” Mr. Obama said. If Congress doesn’t act before lawmakers leave on their holiday break, about
Many people could die as extreme weather becomes common. There will be more freak winds like the October storm, which killed four people. Heatwaves will be lethal and the sea level will rise, leaving coastal towns at risk of being swamped by storm surges. Sir Brian Heap, president of the European Academies Science Advisory Council, said he felt “obliged” to issue the warning after a new study by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. It comes on the back of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, which has killed more than 5,000 people. Sir Brian said: “Given the tragic events this
MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry opened her program over the weekend with a commentary about the Affordable Care Act’s colloquial moniker: “Obamacare.” She said that the word was originally created as a “derogatory term,” designed by white men as a way to delegitimize President Barack Obama and his achievement. However, she said that the term will soon be synonymous with all of Obama’s accomplishments and she urged her audience to use the term with pride. “I want to talk today about a controversial word. It’s a word that has been with us for years, and like it or not, it’s indelibly
