Soldiers told of the horrific torture meted out by terrorists in the Nairobi mall massacre yesterday with claims hostages were dismembered, had their eyes gouged out and were left hanging from hooks in the ceiling. Men were said to have been castrated and had fingers removed with pliers before being blinded and hanged. Children were found dead in the food court fridges with knives still embedded in their bodies, it was claimed. Most of the defeated terrorists, meanwhile, were reportedly discovered ‘burnt to ashes’, set alight by the last extremist standing to try to protect their identities. The horrifying details

OK, lefties. Time to head over to Kenya (or Iran or Saudi Arabia, or...) slap a "Coexist" bumper sticker lecture on the back of a car and drive around the Muslim neighborhoods.

C´mon, what are you waiting for? Let´s see some real commitment to your professed beliefs, or is that just for show on the back of your Pruis parked in the faculty lot?

For most of my life, I have not been able to decide which was the biggest blight on mankind, war or organized religion. I experienced both starting at an early age. I have finally reached a conclusion: it is war in the name of religion that has been and remains the horror of mankind.

Samuel Clements (Mark Twain) expressed his contempt for both far better than I ever could.
Following are excerpts from what he called "The War Prayer." c 1904

Oh Lord our Father, our young patriots, idols of our hearts, go forth to battle - be thou nerar them! ... Oh Lord our God, help us to tear their Soldiers to shreds with our shells, ... help us drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire; help us wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing greif ... For our sakes, who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask it in the spirit of love, of Him who is the Source of Love, and who is the ever faithful refuge and friend of all who are sore beset and seek his aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen.

Here we are again, facing Russia across the barricades. How did that happen? Only five minutes ago, the West was celebrating the collapse of Soviet communism: a historic victory which had been achieved without a shot being fired. Russia would now join the free world as a capitalist economy, with something like democratic institutions. The price of chocolate could soar over the next few years as surging demand puts further pressure on the global cocoa crisis--and experts predict the demand could become unsustainable by 2020. Experts are warning that a growing taste for chocolate in Asia--particularly in China--means cocoa farmers will need more help to provide a greater amount to export or manufacturers will be forced to use less cocoa in their products. It is predicted chocolate prices will soar to keep up with the rising demand--otherwise consumers will increasingly be offered products filled with substitutes, such as nuts and fruits, to ‘pack out’ chocolate bars.

In 1925, Rudyard Kipling wrote an uncharacteristically restrained and sombre short story called The Gardener. It tells of a woman’s search for her illegitimate son, who goes missing in action on the Western Front. After the Armistice, she learns that he has been killed, and is buried in a military cemetery.
