Democrats may have just lost one of their own in the high-stakes fight over ObamaCare -- or maybe not. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., a moderate Democrat known at times to buck his party, said Thursday that he´d be willing to support a spending bill that also delays the law´s requirement on individuals to buy health insurance. "There´s no way I could not vote for it," Manchin said. "It´s very reasonable and sensible." Manchin made the comment at a Bloomberg Government breakfast. The comment, first reported by Bloomberg, was later confirmed by Fox News. But hours later, the senator put out a statement
He was Booker´ed quickly and sternly, no doubt about it. Sorry West Virginia, your Sen Manchin is owned by the White House, utterly and completely. Keep on votin´ for Dems who carry guns and shoot at trees to be melodramatic, and TALK a good game and see where it gets you. Ultimately, he´s a Donk, like any other Donk. So, how dumb are ya? And BTW, extremely lucky for you all that coal is a viable export product, or you´d be completely sunk now by this environmentally ill regime.
Th only reason this slug gets elected in WV is the because so many still believe the in old days when it was said that D´s are for the poor and the R´s are for the rich. Old ignorance dies hard and back woods slicks like Manchin know it and ride it to bank.
Walk backs always happen now courtesy of NSA spying tips to the DNC. I wonder, do NSA performance evaluations now depend on how many phone conversations, e-mails, faxes, etc. are leaked to the DNC? The higher the number, the higher the bonus?
If it is true that someone got to Manchin and that Manchin wimped out, that is exactly what epitomizes Washington pols -- spinelessness. Threaten them when they vote or speak their consciences and they fold like a cheap suit.
Cruz was trying to tell Americans and Washington that Congresspeople are supposed to do the will of the people, not the Party.
I wonder if Manchin was surprised when he first landed in Washington and was told that he and his West Virginia constituents opinions were irrelevant and he was there to be neutered into the Party Machine. This could explain some of the obvious substance abuse issues in Congress.
And don´t forget that Joe Manchin, in a state where coal mining is being DESTROYED by Obama, also voted FOR Obamacare and still likes it.......not so much that he is willing to be covered by it himself but......... Why on earth was he elected?
It´s uncommon for progressives to say something and then walk it back.
Yesterday, I heard Rush call ObamaCare a bait and switch plan, and today I read someone use the same expression. All kinds of things were promised that have been walked back: keep your plan - you can´t afford your plan; your kids can stay on until age 26 - your company is cancelling their family plan; keep your doctor - your doctor can´t afford to keep practicing. Anyway, poorly written, but everyone should be told it´s a bait and switch plan when Reid or others tell us it is the law of the land.
#22--I know someone who was invited to one of those pre-election get-togethers trying to drum up contributions for Obama. The campaign worker candidly said that Obama´s health care plan was just a first step towards single-payer. They know it is going to wreck the insurance industry and force employers to stop offering coverage. The government will then step in to "fix" the problem.
Who cares about some Dim, we should be talking about what Boner is doing and perhaps another one of his botched opportunties. We have a chance to turn the heat on high regarding next years election. Obamacaresless will be on everyones mind if implemented now. Wait a year, and it falls off the talking points map. The GOPhers aren´t called the stooopid party for nothing.
Manchin is not a moderate democrat. This is no such thing as a moderated democrat he might be a democrat but didn´t become a communist yet. That´s about all and this WV turkey Joe Manchin had an attack of mental integrity for a second then caught himself. What´s a ´walk back´? Is that some liberal speak for "I lied and didn´t mean it"? I´m sick of these leftist communist liars.
Interesting that there is a lot of similarity between a moderate Palestinian, a moderate Muslim and a moderate democrat. For one thing they don´t exist.fo another they all lie and then correct or walk-back the next day. and recall that legislator that would not vote for ObamNoCare if it contained funding for abortion. Finally he walked-it-back when Obama wrote out some letter and then later ignored the entire thing. But obama got the vote on crap-care.
There are a lot of people planning on this stuff for serious health reasons. They´ll be roasted if they delay it. It´s going to be a headache no matter when it begins. They may as well implement now and the eternal process fixing it.
(And yes, I do think it´s wrong that in today´s economy you can work a full time job and be paid so little that you can´t afford health care.)
Manchin is an admiral of sorts since someone provided him with a yacht upon which to host gun control parties for fellow legislators, such as Pat Toomey. And Sestak, the retired Admiral, Friend of Bill, and once and future candidate for office in PA, makes Manchin look like Barry Goldwater.
#30 -- It´s not that you´re paid so little. It´s that medical services cost so much.
Case in point, from some recent research by members of the L clan: What the local regional hospital pays the manufacturer for an Oxford patellar prosthesis (replacement knee): $5,000. What the local regional hospital charges the patient -- and mind you, this is for the chunk of titanium ALONE, nothing else: $60,000. That´s a 6 followed by FOUR zeroes, or a 1200% mark-up.
Also thank the New Non-Citizens who´ve turned damned near every ER in the country into their free private sniffles-and-scuffs clinic, and the ambulance-chasing shysters for the crushing med-mal insurance rates that have helped make them rich (and ensured their unflagging support of the U.S. Communist Party).
The two drugs have been declared equivalently miraculous. Tested side by side in six major trials, both prevent blindness in a common old-age affliction. Biologically, they are cousins. They’re even made by the same company. But one holds a clear price advantage. Avastin costs about $50 per injection. Lucentis costs about $2,000 per injection. Doctors choose the more expensive drug more than half a million times every year, a choice that costs the Medicare program, the largest single customer, an extra $1 billion or more annually. Spending that much may make little sense for a country burdened by ever- rising health
LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif.— An Olympic gold medal won by Jesse Owens at the 1936 Berlin Games has sold for a record $1.4 million in an online auction. SCP Auctions said Pittsburgh Penguins co-owner Ron Burkle paid $1,466,574, the highest price for a piece of Olympic memorabilia. The online auction ended Sunday. "We just hope that it´s purchased by an institution where the public could have access to it, a museum or something like that," Owens´ daughter, Marlene Owens Rankin of Chicago, told The Associated Press before the sale. The auction house said Burkle, who also owns William Faulkner´s Nobel Prize
The State Department on Friday defended its decision to commission a $1 million sculpture for the American embassy in London just days before the partial government shutdown in October. The department awarded the contract for the granite sculpture to Sean Scully, an Irish-born American artist, as part of its Art in Embassies program, which curates exhibitions for American embassy and consulate facilities. "Like much of the art purchased by this program, this piece was purchased under the market price after considerable negotiation with both the artist and the gallery. This is an important part of our diplomatic presence overseas," spokeswoman
Anti-government protesters in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev have toppled a statue of Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin. Instagram user Arthur_potachik : (Video) NPR´s Corey Flintoff, who is in Kiev, told our Newscast unit earlier today that opposition groups in the country are calling for a million people to rally against government plans to forge stronger ties with Russia. "Thousands of protestors have been camping out here in Kiev´s central square, but organizers are calling on people from around the country to join them," Corey said. "The protest started as a response to President Viktor Yanukovych´s decision to reject a trade
(Video) With the passing of Nelson Mandela, the world has lost one of its greatest leaders. When Time magazine compiled its list of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century in the late 1990s, Mandela was one of just 20 in the category of most influential leaders and revolutionaries, along with our own civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Among others on the list: Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan, British Prime Ministers Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher, Pope John Paul II, and Israel´s first Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion. And, in a nod to evil´s influence,
Media Buzz host Howard Kurtz brought all of his sports metaphors to a segment about Hardball host Chris Matthews’ recent interview with President Barack Obama, arguing that the sympathetic interview may have played to the MSNBC base but did little to advance Obama’s point of view. “I expected Chris Matthews to deliver a sympathetic friendly interview with President Obama,” Kurtz said. “But I wouldn’t even say he was pitching softballs—I’d describe it as whiffle ball…This is a guy who loves to interrupt his guests, right? He let the president go on and on.” “I would have thought, just to cover
Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) on Sunday said that the life of a national politician can be an “ordeal” and the impact of uncivil treatment on his family could nix any 2016 presidential run. “It really is an ordeal to be part of public life...I also hate it when family is attacked and they get into the news,” he said on "Fox News Sunday." Paul said that some weeks, “the haters and the hacks go after” him and other weeks he has a more positive view. The Kentucky senator said he and his family would take about a year to decide
Really Big Coloring Books, Inc. has released a comic book-style coloring book starring Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. “Ted Cruz to the Future™ — Comic Coloring Activity Book” is a “non-partisan, fact-driven view of how Texas Sen. Rafael Edward ‘Ted’ Cruz became a U.S. senator and details, through his quotes and public information his ideas for what he believes will help America grow,” according to the description. Cruz’s inspiring story as the child of immigrants, Texas solicitor general, and finally, prominent junior senator, is playfully, yet accurately portrayed in a series of outlined pictures begging to be defaced by deft crayonists.
During Friday´s White House briefing, Jonathan Karl of ABC News and Peter Alexander of NBC News both pressed White House spokesman Jay Carney on a Government Accountability Institute (GAI) report that found President Obama and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius had met only once during the three and half years after the passage of ObamaCare. (Video) After Alexander asked about the GAI report, Carney bizarrely suggested that Alexander should have called him to ask the question. Apparently, Carney would have preferred not to have to answer the question on camera -- and for good
In his attempt to downplay the IRS scandal during his soft-ball interview with Chris Matthews, Thursday, the President of the United States subverted the ongoing DOJ investigation of the scandal. Obama declared that the IRS office in Cincinnati was merely trying to "streamline the system" for “bureaucratic reasons” and that agents weren’t intentionally singling out “Tea Party folks.” Via White House Dossier: "If on the other hand, you’ve got an office in Cincinnati in the IRS office that I think for bureaucratic reasons is trying to streamline what a difficult law to interpret about whether non-profit is actually a political
A congressional delegation is expected to go to Nelson Mandela’s memorial services in South Africa and is scheduled leave Sunday, Fox News learned Saturday. It is unclear who House Speaker John Boehner is sending, but members of the Congressional Black Caucus are expected to be on the trip. President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama also will travel to South Africa next week to honor Mandela, the White House said Friday. Former President George W. Bush, as well as Laura Bush, plan to travel with the Obamas on Air Force One to the services, a spokesman confirmed.
Fresh from shackling the traditional blocking ability of the Senate´s minority party, Democrats are ready to muscle through President Barack Obama´s nominees for pivotal judgeships and other top jobs. Despite last month´s Democratic power play, Senate Republicans retain the power to slow, though not derail, Obama´s appointments. Left unchanged were other rules that the out-of-power party could use to grind the chamber´s work to an excruciating crawl. That ranges from requiring clerks to read voluminous bills and amendments to forcing repeated procedural votes. "There are so many ways of slowing things down in the Senate," said
More young men in California rise in pitch at the end of their sentences when talking, new research shows. This process is known as "uptalk" or "valleygirl speak" and has in the past been associated with young females, typically from California or Australia. But now a team says that this way of speaking is becoming more frequent among men.The findings were presented at the Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America in California. "We found use of uptalk in all of our speakers, despite their diverse backgrounds in socioeconomic status, ethnicity, bilingualism and gender," said Amanda Ritchart, a linguist at the University of
DAVID CORN: I saw a president who remains frustrated with the political-media culture that he has to work within, and that he´s looking to rally people, students here, and supporters, and people within the media. CHRIS MATTHEWS: But David Corn, you skeptic. He came to us today. He came amongst us. CORN: He´s trying to rally people behind this vision that he´s been promoting for a couple years. FINEMAN: By the way, he did it the end here, today, Chris, not by defending specifics, but by explaining why he´s in the game to begin with. And I don´t know about you, he´s
The question all week long was this: Who are you going to believe, an illegal alien or the president of the United States of America? Obviously, if it’s a president who once went by an alias, Barry Soetoro, you go with Uncle Omar, 100 percent, no questions asked. And so it was that the White House finally admitted to another, uh, misstatement — despite previous denials, Barack/Barry did sleep on his beloved Uncle Omar’s couch in Cambridge when he first moved here to attend Harvard Law School (speaking of which, we’re still waiting to see the president’s grades and his LSAT scores). But the
The most curious thing of all about the November jobs report released on Friday was the huge drop in the unemployment rate — and the fact that the Labor Department chose not to disclose that the data going into that figure are under investigation for falsification. On Nov. 19, I broke the news in my column that the Census Bureau, which collects data that goes into the jobless rate on behalf of Labor, had caught one of its enumerators fabricating interviews in 2010. The culprit said back then (and to me during an interview) that he was told to do so by
How do you get your arms around the catastrophe known as Obamacare? Is it even possible? At this point, I’m not sure it is. The list of individual disasters which threaten to ruin one-sixth of the U.S. economy and what has been, up until now, the best healthcare system in the world is exhaustive, and exhausting. The examples I will identify here barely scratch the surface. First but by no means foremost, we have the supposedly new and improved HealthCare.gov. Except it’s not, even the visible part. Stories still abound of people still failing to get in or to get through the enrollment
Denver - A baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex ceremony must serve gay couples despite his religious beliefs or face fines, a judge said Friday. The order from administrative law judge Robert N. Spencer said Masterpiece Cakeshop in suburban Denver discriminated against a couple "because of their sexual orientation by refusing to sell them a wedding cake for their same-sex marriage." The order says the cake-maker must "cease and desist from discriminating" against gay couples. Although the judge did not impose fines in this case, the business will face penalties if it continues to turn away gay

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a new five-year strategic plan to improve safety for elderly drivers and passengers. Although they are statistically among the safest on the road, the number of older drivers is increasing dramatically — and with it, that group´s numbers of injuries and deaths. Since 2003, the population of older adults, defined as age 65 and older, has increased by 20% and the number of licensed older drivers increased by 21% to 35 million in 2012, according to NHTSA. Last year, NHTSA reported that 5,560 people older than 65 died and 214,000 were injured
Former President Bill Clinton shared an anecdote regarding Nelson Mandela and the aftermath of his impeachment Friday on CNN. Clinton revealed shortly after the “impeachment business” finished on Capitol Hill, Rep. Henry Hyde (R., Ill.) who managed the impeachment trial requested a meeting at the White House. The former president granted the meeting out of lessons of humility and forgiveness he learned from Mandela, he said: BILL CLINTON: I remember one day, oh, about a month after the whole impeachment business was over, Henry Hyde, who had run the whole show, unbelievably enough, maybe a few months after, it was
One definition of a pathological liar is someone who lies where the truth would serve just as well. When President Obama’s uncle, Onyango Obama, was arrested in 2011 for drunk driving, the truth — that Obama had stayed with his uncle years earlier for several weeks as a Harvard law student — would have served the president just fine. No potential Obama voter would have held it against him that an uncle he had stayed with two decades earlier was picked up for DUI. Yet the White House went with a lie, claiming that Obama had never met his uncle. Now that
Although the jobless rate in November fell to its lowest level since he took office, President Obama called on Republican lawmakers Saturday to spend tens of billions on unemployment benefits that are set to expire this month. “It shouldn’t be a partisan issue,” Mr. Obama said in his weekly address. But he said the “economic lifeline” is in jeopardy. “All because Republicans in this Congress — which is on track to be the most unproductive in history — have so far refused to extend it” Mr. Obama said. If Congress doesn’t act before lawmakers leave on their holiday break, about
Many people could die as extreme weather becomes common. There will be more freak winds like the October storm, which killed four people. Heatwaves will be lethal and the sea level will rise, leaving coastal towns at risk of being swamped by storm surges. Sir Brian Heap, president of the European Academies Science Advisory Council, said he felt “obliged” to issue the warning after a new study by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. It comes on the back of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, which has killed more than 5,000 people. Sir Brian said: “Given the tragic events this
