Cameras capture eagle
killing deer in Russia

Associated Press, by Raphael Satter

Original Article

Posted By:Hermoine, 9/26/2013 2:18:50 PM

LONDON — The eagle, red-handed. Remote cameras intended to monitor Siberian tigers in Russia instead caught a golden eagle´s fatal attack on a deer, snapping three photos as the massive bird dug its talons into the distressed animal´s back. London´s Zoological Society, which distributed the pictures to journalists, said the sequence showed a rare but not unheard of attack by a golden eagle. The society´s Linda Kerley said she first realized something was up when she approached the wildlife-monitoring device — also called a camera trap — and found a mangled deer carcass nearby.

I´m picturing the symbolism of the Obamaites as the deer and the eagle as, well, the Eagle. Maybe that´s why it is news...or at least an interesting side bar. We can´t be all politics all the time.

I wonder if the deer was injured before the eagle attacked. Hard to imagine an eagle would attack such a large animal if it was healthy.

That deer is small and probably didn´t last long. A Golden Eagle has a grip more that ten times as strong as a man´s. It can literally crush that deer´s spine. Not to mention the damage caused by it´s talons and beak. I wouldn´t want one to attack me.

That "deer" is about the size of a poodle.

Golden eagles are big and gorgeous birds. I was once almost attacked by one! I was riding a bike north of Ojai, wearing my white crash helmet. Suddenly this big "whoosh!" and an ENORMOUS bird flies maybe three feet (?) over my head and lands on the rocks opposite - and gives me the evil eye. I suspect this eagle had impaired eyesight and saw my helmet as a possible target - until he got close enough to see it was attached to something larger. If he had hit me, it would have certainly broken my neck and knocked me sprawling into the road. I´ve never heard of that happening, but hmm, I wonder, ... with a broken neck I´d be an easy meal!

Still, that bird up close was awesome.

The phone call to police was a plea to help save a family held by smugglers. But when authorities raided the south Harris County home which they believed held the woman and children Wednesday, they found 110 people imprisoned in a packed, rancid "stash house" where smugglers had locked them away pending payment for their freedom. A tipster had told authorities the night before that he was being extorted by smugglers, and feared for the safety of relatives from Central America. The tipster had said that a coyote drop of the mother, her 7-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son was supposed to

On December 18, 2012, the set of Fox & Friends was both festive and somber. Festive because it was the Christmas season. The three hosts, two men in dark suits flanking a woman in a blue dress, sat on a mustard-colored couch in front of a cheery seasonal backdrop: a lit-up tree, silver-painted twigs, mounds of tinsel, blue and red swatches of fabric, and, here and there, multicolored towers of blown glass with tapering points that made them look surprisingly like minarets. Somber because a terrible thing had happened just four days earlier, in an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

Scientists have found the oldest DNA evidence yet of humans’ biological history. But instead of neatly clarifying human evolution, the finding is adding new mysteries. In a paper in the journal Nature, scientists reported Wednesday that they had retrieved ancient human DNA from a fossil dating back about 400,000 years, shattering the previous record of 100,000 years. The fossil, a thigh bone found in Spain, had previously seemed to many experts to belong to a forerunner of Neanderthals. But its DNA tells a very different story. It most closely resembles DNA from an enigmatic lineage of humans known as Denisovans. Until
