WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama urged supporters on Saturday to "go back at it" and pursue gun-control measures after mass shootings in Washington and Chicago in the past week put the spotlight back onto the problem of gun violence in the United States. Obama made passing tough gun laws a top priority after a gunman killed 20 children and six adults at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, in December, stunning the nation. But Congress rejected his proposals to restrict sales of certain types of guns and require greater background checks. Gun-rights groups opposed the measures, saying they would infringe
Comments: Because, as we all know, mass murderers always dutifully and obediently follow all gun laws. s/ off
I am open to new laws that will prevent mass murders. Trouble is I have yet to hear one such law proposed by ANYONE. There is ABUNDANT evidence that proposed laws would not have prevented recent mass shootings in Aurora, CO, Newtown, CT, the Washington Navy Yard, etc.
If guns are responsible for crimes, Congress should pass a law holding the gun accountable and, if convicted, send the gun to prison. If, instead, it is "a deranged person or grievance killer" as referred to by Dianne Feinstein, person who kills "many people in a short amount of time," hold that PERSON accountable.
In most cases of mass murder, the perpetrator either commits suicide or is killed by the police. The perpetrators are prepared to DIE, why would they obey a law against gun possession as advocated by the anti-gun community?
The reality is simply that "a deranged person or grievance killer" will find a way to either get guns illegally or find an alternate weapon such as a bomb as was recently done in Boston.
I suggest a better focus is for Congress to pass laws making it easier to identify and neutralize "a deranged person or grievance killer" or a mentally deranged person.
Sometimes you must simply accept reality and attempt to deal with it.
Just imagine what would happen if the people in the Mall had to right to carry a weapon. The biggest reason this is a problem is that NOBODY can fight back. Exactly what our fearless leader is trying to do to us.
Obama has no incentive to "talk" about more gun laws other than to switch the narrative away from the ever increasing deplorable job he´s doing as "president," both in domestic and foreign policy. Everything he touches on either side of the pond turns to fecal material.
Well Obama certainly is not going to come out and blame the perpetrators of all those shootings as every one of them and their family members appear to be supporters of the liberal Democrats. No doubt a lot of those people vote.
Guns can´t vote, so it is safe for Obama and the liberal Democrats to blame those hunks of plastic, steel, and wood for the shootings. Besides that, the NRA, and the firearms and related industries in the USA are conservative entities, so the liberal Democrats would love to destroy their businesses by banning most modern firearms, thus putting the jobs of tens of thousands of skilled American workers employed in those industries at risk.
As far as is known, no NRA member has ever perpetrated any of those shootings, and the NRA and the millions of people who they represent have never sanctioned the suicide by cop personal missions that those dangerous mentally ill people embark upon, as their last act in life, hoping to garner as much publicity as possible from the liberal media as, and after, they go out in a hail of police gunfire.
1) Since our government pays a lot of money to make sure the recruits on/in military installations are trained in accurately aiming small arms, rescind the stupid President Clinton Executive Order that forbids them from having a weapon at work.
2) Since most shootings occur in "Gun Free Zones" forbid any government funded building from being designated as one.
Both of these could be accomplished quickly and easily, the former by a new EO, the latter by replacing the "Gun Free Zone" signs with new signs stating, "Employees May Be Armed."
1. As we all know, it´s not about the guns. It´s all about control.
2. The fiction of the "Gun-Free Zone" is, to criminals, simply the bloody truth of "downrange."
3. Just for fun [because my Point 1 is the whole truth of the issue], let me suggest that, if guns are the real problem, so-called "gun crimes" would track exactly and perfectly with the number of guns in each ZIP Code, Congressional district, or whatever geographic boundary you want to use. And Dems could therefore prove their point in a heartbeat. Right?

Most definitely, he is NOT concerned about the many shootings in Chi Land or NJ, or even DC
He is concerned (especially with this mall stand off half a world away) that his muslim buddies will be ready for this enactment here in our country and US Citizens will have not yet been relieved of our weapons and thus able to defend themselves sufficiently and most efficiently. That, apparently, could really screw up his time table for his transforming America. He has a plan. Oh boy, does he have a plan!
Reuters is oversimplifying the case here. Nobody opposes better background checks but that´s only a small part of what Obama wants, including a national gun registry,so they know right where to go when they start grabbing guns. They want the ability to go to someone ones house out of the blue to see if guns are safely stored.
They want doctors asking if you own a gun. They want to ban what they call military assault weapons.Baseball bats and other blunt instruments are reponsible for more battery than guns. It´s like killing people with bombs are ok but don´´t use gas.
The left has already eroded the first amendment, especially religious freedom, the 4th amendment with their compulsive spying and are now after the second amendment. Even the 10th amendment is under seige as Holder steps in and over rules state law with the big foot of federalism.

I don´t think that this idiot will ever figure out that it´s all of his hip-hop, gang banging, rap music playing, thug friends that are doing all of the killing. Gun control means nothing to them. The do whatever you want, political correct society has ruined this once great country. Mayor Rhom can´t stop it, no one can. It´s the sick mind that kills, not guns.
Sears stock plummeted Wednesday as news came out that Edward Lampert, its stubborn billionaire chairman and CEO, had to surrender majority control of the 120-year-old big box retailer when investors in Lampert’s hedge fund pulled money out. With no end in sight for Lampert’s quixotic turnaround efforts, it’s time to question whether there’s any way to save Sears as long as he remains in charge. (Snip) Lampert began at Sears with the ill-fated $12 billion merger with Kmart in 2005. Sales have declined for 27 straight quarters and the company’s stock is down over 70% from its high in 2007.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has no system in place to prevent fraud when individuals apply for tax credits under Obamacare, according to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA). The IG said in an audit released Tuesday that the IRS has no plan to manage, monitor, or mitigate fraud risk when processing premium tax credits available under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). “The ACA Program has not yet completed a fraud mitigation strategy,” the audit found. “It is important for the IRS to thoroughly consider fraud threats and risks that could impact new ACA systems.” Politico reports: The
Around 100,000 Americans successfully signed up for health insurance in November through the troubled federal online marketplace, HealthCare.gov, a person familiar with the preliminary data confirmed to ABC News. The figure reflects a surge in enrollment as software and hardware fixes to the site were made over the course of the month. In October, only 26,000 people could successfully enroll in Obamacare plans, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. "We´ve been working 24/7 to make improvements, and more consumers are successfully shopping online and enrolling in a health plan each week," Health and Human Services Secretary
NEW HAVEN >> The jail cell death last weekend of Yale University professor Samuel See, known as a brilliant writer and rising star in academia, has shaken up the tight-knit college community. Now adding to the mystery of his unexpected death are apparent connections between the online profiles of See and several escort service websites that include a cache of sexually explicit photos. At least four websites advertising male escort services included a phone number connected to See. The website Ryan Cochran Escort Services includes the same phone number listed on an order of protection filed against See in September.
For many Ann Arborites, Thanksgiving is a day devoted to giving thanks, spending time with family, eating turkey and watching the Detroit Lions. This year, retail giants want that to change. (Snip) The early openings change the game for retail giants looking to boost profits through aggressive holiday sales. It also means millions of retail employees in the U.S. are working on the holiday, and it poses the question to consumers: Is a bargain on a 70-inch television or an Apple iPad worth ditching Thanksgiving dinner? “You couldn’t pay me to stand in a line in the cold on Thanksgiving
Macy´s Inc and a slew of other U.S. retailers are opening on Thanksgiving for the first time ever in a bare-knuckled brawl for a bigger slice of overall holiday sales. But it might not be so easy to lure most Americans from their turkey and football - particularly if the weather is foul. Department store rivals Kohl´s Corp and J.C. Penney Co Inc led a string of Thanksgiving opening announcements after Macy´s said it would open its U.S. stores on the popular holiday, ending a 155-year tradition. Sales trends, survey results and an online "Save Thanksgiving" backlash suggest that shoppers
The captain of a Greenpeace ship released on bail after two months of detention in a Russian prison following an Arctic protest said he and his fellow activists remain in shock at their treatment. American Peter Willcox, who was also in charge of Greenpeace’s Rainbow Warrior when it was sunk in Auckland in 1985 by a bomb planted by the French intelligence service, said the organization again found itself in the crosshairs of a government bent on throttling the environmental group. “There is a similarity between the two cases,” with both the French and Russian governments targeting Greenpeace to prevent
DENVER - 9Wants to Know has learned federal investigators believe Colombian drug cartels have taken root within Colorado´s medical marijuana industry. On Thursday, federal agents from the Drug Enforcement Agency and Internal Revenue Service executed search warrants on several medical marijuana shops in Denver and Boulder. One of those shops is VIP Cannabis, a shop near Federal Boulevard and Alameda Avenue. Numerous calls into VIP Cannabis by 9Wants to Know have not been returned. While the warrants and other documents relating to the investigation are under court-ordered seal, sources spoke on the condition of anonymity to 9Wants to Know.
Minorities continue to offer a bulwark of support for the Affordable Care Act, according to the latest United Technologies/National Journal Congressional Connection Poll. But the deepening discrepancy between their views of Obamacare and their support for President Obama´s reelection last year shows skepticism about whether the big social-welfare program has worked touched even the White House´s most ardent supporters. A battery of questions about who benefits from the health care law, whether it should be repealed, and what´s to blame for its rocky rollout all reveal a portion of the electorate that´s far more favorable to the sweeping reform than
WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama´s signature health law has helped spur stronger economic growth by contributing to slower increases in healthcare prices and spending, the White House said on Wednesday. The White House´s assertion of the economic benefits of the law commonly called Obamacare runs counter to the views of many critics, who say it is raising insurance premiums and chilling job creation. (Snip) "The government´s non-partisan actuaries report this is the result of the terrible economy under President Obama, not his health care law," Boehner press secretary Brendan Buck said in an email.
The Obama administration has not always been great at selling its agenda, but the president´s adoption of the right-wing slur "Obamacare" as a prideful new name for the Affordable Care Act has been a notable exception. We often think the proper response to being called a dirty name is to object. That´s a good first step, but in the long term, the judo approach is constructive -- hurl the power being used against you back to your opponent. For example, in 1968 William F. Buckley could offend Gore Vidal by calling him a "queer" on television. Today, the line would
President Obama on Tuesday sought to redirect some of the political blame for the botched rollout of the federal health insurance exchange to Republicans, characterizing GOP lawmakers as rooting for the law’s failure. Addressing a gathering of business executives, Obama acknowledged that the health-care rollout “has been rough, to say the least,” and he lamented the government’s archaic information-technology procurement system. Obama said that fixes to the HealthCare.gov Web portal are underway and that the exchange will function for a majority of people by the end of November. But the president said staunch opposition from congressional Republicans is inhibiting the
I have never been much of a conspiracy theorist. For me it was always Oswald by himself from the Texas School Book Depository and nothing in the intervening fifty years has disabused me of this notion. For the most part, I’m an Occam’s Razor kind of guy — the most obvious explanation is likely to be true. (Snip) To put it bluntly, Occam’s Razor has moved. Things that were once possibilities now seem almost certainties to me. Principal among those is that Obama’s academic records are perpetually unavailable for a reason — and that reason is most likely that they reveal
One of President Obama´s chief political assets has been his ability to excite young people like almost no politician in history. But the days of America´s youth fawning over the president are over. A new Harvard University Institute of Politics poll released Wednesday confirms what other surveys have shown in recent months: Millennials have soured on Obama so much this year that their opinion of him largely mirrors the American public´s. Even though Obama does not ever have to face another election, he should be worried about the findings for a couple of reasons, which we will dive into momentarily.
President Obama will cast growing income inequality and a decline in economic mobility as a “fundamental threat to the American dream” during a speech Wednesday in Washington. The speech will serve as an early preview for next year’s State of the Union address, according to a White House official, who said Obama would focus much of his energy over the next three years on the issue. “The decisions we make over the next few years will determine whether or not our children will grow up in an America where, if you work hard, you can get ahead,” the official said.
Good stuff from Jonathan Turley at today’s House hearing on executive power, although I regret that I couldn’t find a more user-friendly format for you to watch. There’s no compilation clip; you’ll have to make do with the C-SPAN embed by fast-forwarding to the time cues I give you and being patient while the vid buffers (and buffers, and buffers).(Snip)That brings us to point two: Even if Congress can’t stop Obama, the courts can. The problem there, though, says Turley, is that O and the DOJ have argued successfully in many cases that no one has standing to sue him
A stunning new study unveiled on Fox News´ Hannity finds that President Barack Obama’s White House calendar records just one face-to-face meeting between Obama and his Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius in the more than three-and-a-half years leading up to the disastrous Obamacare launch. The startling statistic comes from a new Government Accountability Institute (GAI) analysis of Obama’s own official White House calendar, as well as the Politico presidential calendar, and raises new questions about Obama’s executive leadership and management throughout the implementation of his singular legislative achievement. More alarming still, the president’s schedule lists 277 private
[Video] President Obama on Wednesday declared that addressing income inequality would be the focus of “all” of the White House’s efforts “for the rest of my presidency.” In a sweeping address that touched on raising the minimum wage, investing in infrastructure and ending tax breaks for the wealthy, Obama warned that the American economy has become “profoundly unequal,” declaring economic mobility the “challenge of our time.” “The combined trends of increasing inequality and decreasing mobility pose a fundamental threat to the American dream, our way of life, and what we stand for around the globe,” he said in an hour-long
Just over two weeks ago, MSNBC host Martin Bashir delivered a harsh piece of commentary that culminated in the suggestion that someone should “s-h-i-t” in former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin‘s (R-AK) mouth. Bashir offered an abject apology on his next broadcast, but a chorus of critics continued to demand action against the host. After a reported “vacation” for the host earlier this week, Bashir announced, Wednesday afternoon, that MSNBC and Martin Bashir are parting ways. Here’s the statement from Martin Bashir, via email: After making an on-air apology, I asked for permission to take some additional time out around the Thanksgiving holiday. Upon
Nineteen people stood behind President Obama on stage in the Executive Office Building Tuesday as the president kicked off a new campaign to promote Obamacare. One of those people, a young Florida woman named Monica Weeks, introduced Obama after telling the story of being struck with Crohn´s Disease at age 19 and receiving expensive treatments for several years that were covered by her parents´ health care plan — because Obamacare allowed her to remain on that plan until age 26. Now, Weeks said, she has coverage through a job. "The Affordable Care Act gives young adults who are just starting
Amid an array of “knock-out” attacks against a number of Jews in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood, a city councilwoman pointed to the success of the Jewish community as triggering the aggression. Councilwoman-elect Laurie Cumbo emphasized that while she “admire[s] the Jewish community immensely” for its work ethic, black teens may see it differently. “While I personally regard this level of tenacity, I also recognize that for others, the accomplishments of the Jewish community triggers feelings of resentment, and a sense that Jewish success is not also their success,” Cumbo, who was recently elected, wrote in a letter. Chief among the issues
Continued global warming poses a risk of rapid, drastic changes in some human and natural systems, a scientific panel warned Tuesday, citing the possible collapse of polar sea ice, the potential for a mass extinction of plant and animal life and the threat of immense dead zones in the ocean. At the same time, some worst-case fears about climate change that have entered the popular imagination can be ruled out as unlikely, at least over the next century, the panel found. These include a sudden belch of methane from the ocean or the Arctic that would fry the planet, as
America is facing a wave of strikes by its fast-food workers on Thursday a day after Barack Obama warned that inequality in the USA had soared to the point that it now posed "a fundamental threat to the American dream". Low-paid workers in McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken and other fast-food outlets in 100 cities across America were due to start rolling strikes to protest at the low level of America´s $7.25 (£4.45) federal minimum wage. The strikes are the latest part of a mushrooming publicity campaign for higher wages among those working so-called "McJobs", with fast-food restaurants seen as a
The president put in his ask to Disney CEO Bob Iger at a private meeting with entertainment moguls during his Nov. 26 visit to Jeffrey Katzenberg´s DreamWorks Animation. At the end of the conversation -- which touched on a myriad of topics, from piracy to Iran -- Obama revealed what´s at the top of his bucket
