Senate Republicans, along with GOP lawmakers in the House, know that Sen. Ted Cruz and his colleagues don´t have the votes to pass a continuing resolution to defund Obamacare. They don´t even have the votes -- 41 in the Senate -- to successfully filibuster a resolution that does fund Obamacare. But some had hoped that Cruz & Co. could at least stage an old-fashioned talking filibuster -- like Sen. Rand Paul´s March filibuster against U.S. drone policy -- that would at least be a high-profile symbol of Republican opposition to the president´s national health care law. Now, it turns out they
For the last few months Byron York has been against defunding Obamacare. I guess he´s forgotten all the ideas he had to replace it with....I smell an other Jennifer Rubin coming on...pretty soon he will be as anti-conservative as the "conservative at the Washington Post." Remember...no guts...no glory....no Republic.
Time to put everyone on record of being for the horrible bill the Democrats passed by reconciliation, period.
They all know it´s a horrible bill, and it´s flawed, and written by the Democrats´ lobbyists.
The unions want out, most major corporations are dumping their retirees of their medical plans, Obama has not met nearly 70 deadlines required by the law, and Warren Buffett even says to drop Obamacare, and re-do a better bill.
It´s a train wreck as Dem Senator Max Baucus stated.
And here, the GOP is offering the Democrats a chance to back away from their flawed bill, and re-do it in a more deliberate and bi-partisan manner.
What York won´t tell you is that once the House passes the measure to defund and the Senate strips the defunding clause, the matter goes to conference. That is where Boehner and company will stand firm, or not. That is what we are watching. Boehner´s move is a step in the right direction (at last): but we want outcome, not process. This matter is just too important to not do otherwise. We will be watching.
Rule 22, the filibuster procedure, is not the issue. The fact that this can not be filibustered is not the issue, the real fight is the conference to reconcile the house and senate versions. Also dems have to make a stand for a very unpopular bill. The 2014 midterms will be a disaster for those supporting obamaCare and for those who are too scared to stand on principle, I am not sure which disgusts me more.
Yes, "complicit" is a great word description of McCain, Graham, Cantor, McCarthy, McConell, Boehner, media whores and all those who sit back and let this obamacare railroad right over us. I´m only worried enough people don´t care to affect change. As in VOTE them out of office or recall!!!
Obviously, many posters believe this bill still has a possibility of accomplishing the defunding of Obamacare. Maybe they are right. But, I can´t see how we get there from here. And, I believe it to be a false choice to demand legislators´ support for what I believe is a futile effort, or risk being labeled a "RINO", "not conservative", a "traitor" and a target for defeat in the 2014 elections. Is it not just slightly possible that a principled, conservative legislator believes firmly in the destruction of Obamacare, but prefers a different method of achieving it? What are the steps for defunding Obamacare in this legislative session? Why would Obama not veto it? Does anyone really believe he will be so cowed by the intense rhetoric that he will fail to veto his one claim to a place in history? Yes, Reid will restore the funding and then send it to conference. What is supposed to happen there? One poster on this thread is "watching". I´m watching, too, and I´m filled with sympathy for good, dedicated, concerned House and Senate members who simply can´t find any logic in rescuing Barack Obama with this doomed effort.
So inside baseball says we´ve already struck out and take the medicine. Surely there are issues to make out of our stupid and craven Democrat world view. At least make them. Barry is a bumbler. If raising the debt ceiling doesn´t raise the debt -- his words -- don´t bother raising the debt ceiling. Barry´s a fool and the world can see it. Stop caving to fools and pollsters and Roves.
There are TWO funding issues pending, First: The "Continuing Resolution" which should pass by Sept. 30 when the current one expires. This is necessary because the dems have not passed a budget for years. The second issue is the debt ceiling, the US will exceed the current one near the middle of Oct.
I would love to believe those "good, dedicated, concerned members of the House and Senate" were actually going to do something to stop this; however, they behave like scared little mice scurrying silently around the back corridors of the Congress.
They must speak up and tell us what they are doing...maybe they will get support. Their silence makes me worry about what nefarious deals they are planning that will once again sell us down the river. I trust no one at this point.
#11 - You are missing the point. It´s about getting the votes on record. There is an election coming up in November 2014. Who has the cojones to support defunding this albatross? Those that think like you and Carl Rove will probably not be re-elected. A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. This is one of those steps. We can´t have representatives that don´t fight for us. Watch the movie "300". They knew they were going to die but they fought anyway. If ever we needed our representatives to stand and fight, it is now. At least they will live to fight again. There is no disgrace in being on the losing side if you fought a good fight. Who knows, some of those Dems on the edge might cross the aisle to save their hides.
My Democrat senator is up for re-election. He will probably not vote to defund Obamacare. He will more than likely not be re-elected. My Republican representative has been warned he will be primaried if he doesn´t support it.
This has nothing to do with helping Obama. It has first and most importantly been about preventing implementation by any lawful means. Even if it only has a breath more than theoretical chance of success, it is worth the attempt.
Second, the fight is instructive to the uninformed. Both as a fiscal matter and human services matter, this bill is an abomination. The more attention drawn to this, the better.
Third, it will force votes and accountability at the polls. Political calculation always serves non-conservative interests because it is fundamentally a deception. Those opposing this measure should take stock of their principles and admit that their motives rise from their moderate political principles. There is no other reason to oppose it. I have no problem if someone is not a conservative. Just don´t say you are and then oppose conservative efforts. That is utterly perfidious. Just admit you are not a conservative.
The House controls the Money. If Dingy Harry restores the funding (which of course he will) the bill then goes back to the House. At that point they are not obliged to do anything. The do not have to bring it up for a vote again. Simply walk away. They´ve already done their part.
If you like your selfie, you can keep your selfie. Period. Unless, of course, you’re Barack Obama, in which case, you better delete it from your smartphone pronto, unless you’d like to spend the next three or four months dining on hot tongue and cold shoulder. You didn’t need a fake interpreter from an old Woody Allen movie to translate Moochelle Obama’s body language. So there they were, Barry, British Prime Minister David Cameron and the hot-wife leader of Denmark, Helle Thorning-Schmidt, hamming it up like it was the 25th anniversary reunion of the Choom Gang. Some Krazy Kids, horsing around, waiting for
The British security firm that failed to protect the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, from a terrorist attack a year ago that killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens was told by the State Department to avoid the media, the latest example of stonewalling over the attack. In newly uncovered emails received by the public watchdog group Judicial Watch, State was notified that the firm, Blue Mountain Group, was being pressed for answers about the surprise attack. Instead of giving the group the green light to answer the media, State ordered the firm to go into hiding. “Thank you so much for informing us about
Regularly scheduled elections are a hallmark of the American political system. In 18th-century Britain, the monarch could call new elections on a whim, and our Founders saw in that arrangement a seed of tyranny. The Constitution they designed requires elections for Congress every two years, and the next such elections are less than a year away. This is good news for conservatives as they continue to oppose the Obama administration. This president has been tremendously helped by having a Democratic-controlled Senate for his first five years in office. Harry Reid’s masterful, if not entirely virtuous, use of Senate rules has
The gangster state of North Korea became a nuclear power in 2006–07, despite lots of foreign aid aimed at precluding just such proliferation — help usually not otherwise accorded such a loony dictatorship. Apparently the civilized world rightly suspected that, if nuclear, Pyongyang would either export nuclear material and expertise to other unstable countries, or bully its successful but non-nuclear neighbors — or both. The United States has given billions of dollars in foreign aid to Pakistan, whose Islamist gangs have spearheaded radical anti-American terrorism. Ever since a corrupt Pakistan went nuclear in 1998, it has been able to extort such
After three months and more than 50 phone calls, John Gisler gave up on buying coverage through HealthCare.gov. Gisler wanted to purchase a plan for his 45-year-old son, who has a rare degenerative condition affecting his coordination and speech. His current coverage through Utah’s high-risk insurance pool plan ends Dec. 31. By that time, the Obama administration expects enrollees to transition into health plans sold through the new health-care law. But so far, Gisler hasn’t succeeded in purchasing coverage -- but not for a lack of effort. “We’ve had three separate applications that failed to make it through,” Gisler says. “I have a
Remember when Bill Clinton was twice elected President as a "New Democrat" who wanted to get along with people in the private economy? Nowadays even writing in favor of ideas that Mr. Clinton supported can get you branded a heretic and banished from impolite liberal society. Witness the political tempest that blew up in response to the December 3 op-ed we published by Democrats Jon Cowan and Jim Kessler of the Third Way think tank. The former aides to Andrew Cuomo and Chuck Schumer, respectively, would be considered liberals in most places outside of the Harvard faculty lounge. But the campus
Maybe he went into sugar shock over a Danish pastry. The president of the United States, leader of the free world, standard-bearer for everything upright, good and wholesome about the nation he leads, lost his morality, his dignity and his mind, using the solemn occasion of Nelson Mandela’s memorial service Tuesday to act like a hormone-ravaged frat boy on a road trip to a strip bar. In front of 91 world leaders, the mourning nation of South Africa and Obama’s clearly furious wife, Michelle, the president flirted, giggled, whispered like a recalcitrant child and made a damn fool of himself at first
Washington -- A handful of Republican Party officials is quietly advancing a new batch of rules aimed at streamlining a chaotic presidential nominating process that many party insiders viewed as damaging to the their campaign for the White House in 2012, multiple GOP sources told CNN. In a series of closed-door meetings since August, handpicked members of the Republican National Committee have been meeting with party Chairman Reince Priebus in Washington to hash out details of a sweeping plan to condense the nominating calendar, severely punish primary and caucus states that upend the agreed-upon voting order and potentially move the party´s
THE Internet has been abuzz over the spectacle of President Obama and the prime ministers of Britain and Denmark snapping a photo of themselves — a “selfie,” to use the mot du jour — with a smartphone at the memorial service for Nelson Mandela in South Africa on Tuesday. Leaving aside whether it was appropriate, the moment captured the democratization of image making that is a hallmark of our gadget-filled, technologically rich era. Manifestly undemocratic, in contrast, is the way Mr. Obama’s administration — in hypocritical defiance of the principles of openness and transparency he campaigned on — has systematically tried
“Obama/Cameron Selfie Photographer to TNR: I’m Ashamed of Mankind,” the New Republic reports today: Roberto Schmidt is the AFP photographer, currently the agency’s chief photographer for South Asia, who captured that infamous snap. Reached by phone in South Africa, he sighed heavily. “Why do people care about a selfie?” he said. “This is a sad reflection of our society.” He’d gone to photograph the memorial with a team of ten photographers. They moved some 500 images on the wire. “Good images, nice, strong images,” he said. “Images of South Africans dancing, smiling, chanting, which is the way they express mourning for
The Texas Republican Party is reopening the filing period for Rep. Steve Stockman´s (R-Texas) congressional district after his last-second decision to run instead against Sen. John Cornyn (R). Stockman filed for Cornyn´s seat rather than reelection just minutes before the state´s legal filing deadline Monday night, giving aspiring politicians in the district no heads up that he was doing so. The party´s move gives candidates an additional week, with the new filing deadline set for next Monday. Texas Republican Party spokesman Spencer Yeldell said the party was reopening the filing because it´s required by Texas´s election code. Stockman is facing a steep uphill
Hill staffers that signed up for ObamaCare through the Washington, D.C., healthcare exchange, called DC Health Link (DCHL), are being told to confirm their enrollments in person, and not to rely on data provided by the website. The Hill obtained an email sent to staffers on Wednesday warning them that “it is essential that you confirm your coverage in DCHL through the Disbursing Office.” “Do not rely on your ‘My Account’ page or other correspondence from DCHL,” the email reads. “Please do not assume you are covered unless you have seen the confirmation letter from the Disbursing Office,” the email continues. Hill workers had
When I was a kid, I knew two different Santa Clauses. The first had a fat belly, rosy cheeks, a long white beard, and skin as pink as bubble gum. He was omnipresent, visiting my pre-school and the local mall, visible in all of my favorite Christmas specials. Then there was the Santa in my family’s household, in the form of ornaments, cards, and holiday figurines. A near-carbon copy of the first one—big belly, rosy cheeks, long white beard: check, check, check. But his skin was as dark as mine. Seeing two different Santas was bewildering. Eventually I asked my father what
US President Barack Obama may have moved the masses attending Nelson Mandela’s memorial service with his stirring eulogy, but it was his grinning "selfie" with the Danish and British premiers that set social networks abuzz. In a candid moment captured by a photographer, Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt can be seen holding up her smartphone, with Obama lending a helping hand, as they pose for a picture with David Cameron, all three of them smiling broadly in their seats at Soweto’s World Cup stadium.(Snip)Mashable, the news and technology website, ran the photograph under the headline: ‘‘Dear Obama: Funerals are no place
Johannesburg - A man who provided sign language interpretation on stage for Nelson Mandela´s memorial service, attended by scores of heads of state, was a "fake," the national director of the Deaf Federation of South Africa said on Tuesday. Asked about the claim by The Associated Press, South Africa´s government said it was preparing a statement. Three sign language experts said the man was not signing in South African or American sign languages. South African sign language covers all of the country´s 11 official languages, according to the federation. It wasn´t immediately clear if the unidentified man was using a
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) snapped at conservative groups that have come out in opposition to the budget deal reached Wednesday between Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.). "They´re using the American people for their own purposes. This is ridiculous," Boehner said at a press conference with other members of House Republican leadership on Wednesday. Over the past few days, a number of conservative groups have blasted the deal because it sets discretionary spending levels in the budget higher than previous levels under sequestration. In the past three days, the influential Heritage Action, Club for Growth, Americans
A black fashion student says he was brutally attacked by a gang of Hasidic men who shouted anti-gay slurs at him while he was walking through Williamsburg after a night of partying, the Daily News has learned. Taj Patterson, 22, was headed home to Fort Greene around 4:30 a.m. on Dec. 1 when he says more than a dozen ultra-Orthodox Jewish men began assaulting him on Flushing Ave. and yelling, “Stay down, f----t!”
A “presidential selfie” featuring President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron, and Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service began making the rounds this morning, but it’s the person not included in the frame who caught everyone’s attention: As anyone with two eyes and a Twitter account has noticed, Michelle Obama does not appear amused. Of course, though a picture says a thousand words, not all of those words are necessarily true. FLOTUS might not have even known the photo was taking place. Or she could disapprove of funeral selfies. Either way.
President Obama’s job approval among American voters has dropped to negative territory with just 38 percent voicing their approval versus the 58 who says they disapprove, according to a national poll released Tuesday by the independent Quinnipiac University. That is one percent less than the 39% who said they approved of him in last month’s poll. The majority of the 2,692 registered voters the University in early December said that the president is not honest and trustworthy. When asked, “Do you approve or disapprove of the way Barack Obama is handling his job as President?,” respondents gave Obama lackluster ratings
Looks like this president can’t get away with flirting in front of his wife… It appears that first lady Michelle Obama was none too pleased with the way that President Barack Obama was acting toward Denmark Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt during a ceremony honoring Nelson Mandela, and before too long, they switched seats. This lmao! Michelle Obama vs Prime Minister of Denmark at Mandela´s ceremony. pic.twitter.com/Rq4uF9fTaZ — Stun (@TheBlogPirate) December 10, 2013
The sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela´s memorial yesterday "made up his own signs," according to South Africa´s deaf federation. "He´s a complete fraud," Cara Loening, director of Sign Language Education and Development in Cape Town, said according to ITV News. "He wasn´t even doing anything, There was not one sign there. Nothing. He was literally flapping his arms around." Delphin Hlungwane, an official South African sign language interpreter at DeafSA, told Reuters:
New York — The anchor who might beat Bill O’Reilly gets her eyelash extensions applied one at a time, with tweezers and dabs of glue, about 90 minutes before showtime, right after a motorized gun sprays foundation over her face, neck, shoulders, collarbone and sternum, wiping out a galaxy of light freckles that spreads across her — Let me stop you right there. Photos of the day Uruguay legalizes marijuana, Kiev police pull back from protesters, aging U.S. prison population and more. Tuesday´s Photos of the day Would you write this way about a man? About O’Reilly himself? At least that’s what Megyn Kelly might ask at
SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -Officials at Shaw Air Force Base are trying to determine what to do about a holiday display after a Nativity scene was taken down last week. Air Force spokeswoman Lt. Keavy Rake said Tuesday a Nativity display was set up Friday by a group of volunteers from the base chapel at a small lake on the installation. The site was near where a tree lighting ceremony was scheduled Friday evening. Rake says the Military Religious Freedom Foundation lodged a complaint about the display through the Air Force in Washington. Paul Loebe, spokesman for the foundation, said
