A Russian official blasted “American exceptionalism” in a tweet Monday morning, saying the deadly shooting at Washington’s Navy Yard confirms the worst about the U.S. “A new shootout at Navy headquarters in Washington — a lone gunman and 7 corpses. Nobody’s even surprised anymore,” tweeted Alexey Pushkov, a member of the Russian parliamentary foreign affairs committee. “A clear confirmation of American exceptionalism,” he added.
On the other hand, "gotta know when to hold, know when to fold ´em" and perhaps it´s time to tone down on the exceptionalism? It´s regarded as unseemly by the rest of the world, just as it would be if an individual kept droning on about his own exceptionalism. It invites nothing but trouble.
As the same time, never giving up on holding the media´s feet to the fire and fighting biased history books & political correctness over truth in the schools and universities.
#5 - For those that feel ´American exceptionalism´ means that all Americans are somehow superior when compared to any non-American, that is not the case. The USA is exceptional because it is the only country on this planet that has survived and prospered while absorbing multiple races and cultures. And until liberalism, communism, and other ´isms´ that are based upon divisiveness and confrontation began to get a foothold here, we were indeed exceptional.
Now whether the ´melting pot´ idea can continue without some restraints is another idea worth debating. There are as many arguments for racial and political purity as there are against it. Bee hives and ant hills are successful because they tolerate no significant deviation from an established norm. But neither do they advance. As I said ... another day.
I´m not saying I don´t agree with American exceptionalism. Of course I do. I just think we need to stop touting it so much - sort of boasting about it. From my travels & experience, I am all too aware that people elsewhere (with a few exceptions, like Mexico) are extremely offended by what they perceive as this arrogant giant who thinks it´s better than everyone else and keeps pushing everyone else around - and has no awareness or appreciation of everyone else and their contributions & achievements. They may be exceptional too in their own way. You know? We´ve been so generous financially, and maybe we should match that with words and attention. This coincides with some lib thought, but truth is truth.
When I hear anti-Americanism from British/Euro friends, I always mentally react with the same thoughts you all would have, and I take up for us as much as I can. They always say, "Not you" because they see me as well traveled and aware of & knowledgeable of their countries. So I just think that, well-traveled or not, we need to think of it as how individuals would relate & speak to one another, and how turned off we are when someone pumps himself up all the time & thinks he´s superior. It´s very simple.
And you can see an example of this ´karma´ in this article. If we stick our neck out in that way, we invite getting it verbally chopped. But I agree Obama was very dumb in the way he played this. If he´s going to argue for exceptionalism he could at least get it right!
If other nationalities don´t like our exceptionalism, they are always free to pursue their own exceptionalism rather than to put ours down.
My definition of American Exceptionalism is that we were the first nation founded on the rights and power of the individual. What other nation was founded on the idea that it is a right to pursue happiness? A right endowed by God?
Our freedom and our inalienable rights have brought us health, wealth and the ability to give assistance, be it military or humanitarian, to every other nation on the planet.
Name one other country which can say and do that. We are exceptional. Those who reject or ridicule that notion are suffering from envy and ignorance.
He can mock because no one has the brains to use data.
It´s ´interactive´ meaning the data will show up when you float your cursor over the country. Murder rate is about 14 per 100k in Russia, 5 here.
Further, watch how murder is defined. the Nationmaster website defines it as convictions so Turkey, with the least defendent friendly system, is ´most murderous´. Chartsbin uses ´as unlawful death purposefully inflicted on a person by another person.´
Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday firmly criticized the White House for publishing what it said was a false version of the interim nuclear agreement reached early Sunday between Iran and the six world powers. “What has been released by the website of the White House as a fact sheet is a one-sided interpretation of the agreed text in Geneva and some of the explanations and words in the sheet contradict the text of the Joint Plan of Action, and this fact sheet has unfortunately been translated and released in the name of the Geneva agreement by certain media, which is
Caught flat-footed by the challenges of building the financial-management and accounting parts of the U.S. government´s new online marketplace for health insurance, officials rushed to hire a familiar contractor without seeking competing bids, according to government procurement documents reviewed by Reuters. The documents dated in August - less than two months before the opening of online marketplaces established by President Barack Obama´s landmark healthcare law - showed the agency in charge had only "recently learned" that building the financial management functions was "beyond (its) currently available resources."
Politico’s publication of a screed against Wisconsin GOP Gov. Scott Walker by Ian Murphy, a left-wing writer who is outspoken about his hatred for United States military members, has prompted a backlash against the publication by some in the military community--especially new recruit Trevor Chase. Chase, 18, is a conservative Wisconsinite and freshman at the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh, majoring in radio, television and film communications while minoring in military science. “I’m currently in ROTC and I’m going to sign today, actually, to be in the National Guard and do basic [training] and AIT [Advanced Individual Training] this summer
WASHINGTON — Congresswoman Grace Meng, a freshman Democrat representing the New York City borough of Queens, was hit in the head and robbed in Washington but was not seriously injured and is back to work. Meng said Wednesday that she suffered a bruise on her chin and scratches on her arm and knee in the attack Tuesday night near Eastern Market in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. She underwent a CAT scan at George Washington University Hospital.
SIMI VALLEY (CBSLA.com) — A Simi Valley pastor says he found several Bibles labeled as “fiction” at a Ventura County Costco store. Caleb Kaltenbach was shopping at Costco, 2660 Park Center Drive, on Nov. 15 when he noticed the peculiar labeling of the holy book. Kaltenbach, a pastor at the non-denominational Discovery Church, took a picture of the “$14.99 Fiction” Bible, and tweeted it out to his nearly 1,300 followers. “Costco has Bibles for sale under the genre of FICTION. Hmmmm,” he said.Costco officials declined to comment on the matter when questioned by CBS2/KCAL9.
Country stars Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley mocked Obamacare (in song, of course) during their opening act at the Country Music Awards on Wednesday night, to thunderous laughter from the audience. After “twerking” his back, Paisley is led through the user-friendly sign up process that registered a whole six people on its first day. “Oh it’s great,” Underwood gushes. “I started signing up last Thursday, and I’m almost done!”
Everyone is focusing on Obamacare because it is such an obvious disaster, but in fact, it is but a microcosm of Barack Obama´s entire presidency. Obamacare is Obama unmasked. Aren´t some of you tired of making lame excuses for him that only serve to make things worse? He has made a mess of nearly everything his policies have touched, and he´s mostly avoided the blame; but he owns Obamacare, and he has nowhere to hide.
Congressional Republicans have stoked consumer fears and confusion with charges that the health care reform law is causing insurers to cancel existing policies and will force many people to pay substantially higher premiums next year for coverage they don’t want. That, they say, violates President Obama’s pledge that if you like the insurance you have, you can keep it. Mr. Obama clearly misspoke when he said that. By law, insurers cannot continue to sell policies that don’t provide the minimum benefits and consumer protections required as of next year. So they’ve sent cancellation notices to
Giuliani said de Blasio owes it to city cops to make amends for a misguided -- if politically beneficial -- opposition to the NYPD´s stop and frisk policies. "This man has foisted on the city of New York a totally phony claim, and he´s maligned a great police department with his claim of racial profiling," he said, calling de Blasio´s argument that stop and frisk systematically overtargets minorities "outrageous." De Blasio has said he would drop the city´s appeal of Judge Shira Scheindlin´s ruling on NYPD reforms if he becomes mayor --
Food stamp recipients face a massive benefit cut set to kick in when stimulus funds expire Friday. The nationwide cut “is equivalent to about 16 meals a month for a family of three,” according to a Center on Budget and Policy Priorities analysis using the USDA’s “Thrifty Food Plan.” CBPP called the roughly $5 billion annual cut to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program “unprecedented” in “depth and breadth.” “If you look across the world, riots always begin typically the same way: when people cannot afford to eat food,” Margarette Purvis, the president and CEO of the Food Bank..
PHILADELPHIA — Speaking exclusively to CBS 3, a 15-year-old high school student, whose identity we are concealing, described a terrifying attack by a gang of at least nine teenage boys as she was leaving an Interboro High School football game Monday night. The teenage victim described first being taunted by the attackers, who followed her down a neighborhood street, cursing and spitting at her, before she was repeatedly kicked and punched, at least one of the blows to her head.
WASHINGTON, October 7, 2013 — A march is coming to Washington this weekend that might make the lawmakers on both sides of the aisle take notice and rethink all of the political grandstanding in order to gain campaign contributions for themselves and their party, yet are hurting real Americans. On Sunday October 13, 2013 the Million Vet March is going to take place t 9:00 a.m. at the World War II Memorial. The protest has been organized by individuals with various connections to the military, either as children of veterans, spouses of veterans or those who have served themselves, who are outraged and deeply disappointed that individuals who have served in the military have been blocked from the memorials honoring their service across the country.
Last summer on his $100 million family tour of Africa, Barack Obama hoped for a priceless photo op with Nelson Mandela, the ailing freedom pioneer who went from prison cell to the presidency of South Africa. Mandela´s family suggested that wouldn’t happen. So, the Obamas did a photo op in Mandela´s former prison cell. Which Obama’s White House quickly tweeted upon word of the icon´s passing at 95. [Skip] But Obama was also caught staring at television coverage of Mandela’s passing, which became Obama’s Photo of the Day.
More young men in California rise in pitch at the end of their sentences when talking, new research shows. This process is known as "uptalk" or "valleygirl speak" and has in the past been associated with young females, typically from California or Australia. But now a team says that this way of speaking is becoming more frequent among men.The findings were presented at the Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America in California. "We found use of uptalk in all of our speakers, despite their diverse backgrounds in socioeconomic status, ethnicity, bilingualism and gender," said Amanda Ritchart, a linguist at the University of
DAVID CORN: I saw a president who remains frustrated with the political-media culture that he has to work within, and that he´s looking to rally people, students here, and supporters, and people within the media. CHRIS MATTHEWS: But David Corn, you skeptic. He came to us today. He came amongst us. CORN: He´s trying to rally people behind this vision that he´s been promoting for a couple years. FINEMAN: By the way, he did it the end here, today, Chris, not by defending specifics, but by explaining why he´s in the game to begin with. And I don´t know about you, he´s
The most curious thing of all about the November jobs report released on Friday was the huge drop in the unemployment rate — and the fact that the Labor Department chose not to disclose that the data going into that figure are under investigation for falsification. On Nov. 19, I broke the news in my column that the Census Bureau, which collects data that goes into the jobless rate on behalf of Labor, had caught one of its enumerators fabricating interviews in 2010. The culprit said back then (and to me during an interview) that he was told to do so by
Denver - A baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex ceremony must serve gay couples despite his religious beliefs or face fines, a judge said Friday. The order from administrative law judge Robert N. Spencer said Masterpiece Cakeshop in suburban Denver discriminated against a couple "because of their sexual orientation by refusing to sell them a wedding cake for their same-sex marriage." The order says the cake-maker must "cease and desist from discriminating" against gay couples. Although the judge did not impose fines in this case, the business will face penalties if it continues to turn away gay

In February, the Bush family’s personal emails were hacked by Guccifer, a hacker who uncovered photographs of former President George H. W. Bush in a hospital bed and George W. Bush’s oil paintings in the process. It seems Guccifer has struck again, this time targeting former President Bill Clinton and the Clinton Library. The hacker has reportedly uncovered doodles of Clinton drawing on what were, at the time, classified documents. Among the doodles is apparently a picture of a penis. The document uncovered is a briefing of the strategic measures the United States could take prior Clinton’s decision to intervene in
Former President Bill Clinton shared an anecdote regarding Nelson Mandela and the aftermath of his impeachment Friday on CNN. Clinton revealed shortly after the “impeachment business” finished on Capitol Hill, Rep. Henry Hyde (R., Ill.) who managed the impeachment trial requested a meeting at the White House. The former president granted the meeting out of lessons of humility and forgiveness he learned from Mandela, he said: BILL CLINTON: I remember one day, oh, about a month after the whole impeachment business was over, Henry Hyde, who had run the whole show, unbelievably enough, maybe a few months after, it was
One definition of a pathological liar is someone who lies where the truth would serve just as well. When President Obama’s uncle, Onyango Obama, was arrested in 2011 for drunk driving, the truth — that Obama had stayed with his uncle years earlier for several weeks as a Harvard law student — would have served the president just fine. No potential Obama voter would have held it against him that an uncle he had stayed with two decades earlier was picked up for DUI. Yet the White House went with a lie, claiming that Obama had never met his uncle. Now that
Although the jobless rate in November fell to its lowest level since he took office, President Obama called on Republican lawmakers Saturday to spend tens of billions on unemployment benefits that are set to expire this month. “It shouldn’t be a partisan issue,” Mr. Obama said in his weekly address. But he said the “economic lifeline” is in jeopardy. “All because Republicans in this Congress — which is on track to be the most unproductive in history — have so far refused to extend it” Mr. Obama said. If Congress doesn’t act before lawmakers leave on their holiday break, about
Many people could die as extreme weather becomes common. There will be more freak winds like the October storm, which killed four people. Heatwaves will be lethal and the sea level will rise, leaving coastal towns at risk of being swamped by storm surges. Sir Brian Heap, president of the European Academies Science Advisory Council, said he felt “obliged” to issue the warning after a new study by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. It comes on the back of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, which has killed more than 5,000 people. Sir Brian said: “Given the tragic events this
The New York City Police Department (NYPD) is sending out letters telling gun owners to turn over their rifles and shotguns — or else face the consequences. New York City’s ban on rifles and shotguns that hold more than five rounds is now being enforced, according to a letter the NYPD is sending out to targeted city gun owners. “It appears you are in possession of a rifle and/or Shotgun (listed below) that has an ammunition feeding device capable of holding more than five (5) rounds of ammunition. Rifles and shotguns capable of holding more than five (5) rounds of ammunition are
