MOSCOW — RECENT events surrounding Syria have prompted me to speak directly to the American people and their political leaders. It is important to do so at a time of insufficient communication between our societies. Relations between us have passed through different stages. We stood against each other during the cold war. But we were also allies once, and defeated the Nazis together. The universal international organization — the United Nations — was then established to prevent such devastation from ever happening again. The United Nations’ founders understood that decisions affecting war and peace should happen only by consensus, and
Unbelievable! Now we have Putin telling us what a nice guy Obama is! Telling us we shouldn´t think we are exceptional and he has the gall to use "God created us equal"! He and Obama are two of a kind. Maybe this was planned. I don´t trust Obama and think he could be capable of seeing the demise of this country sooner rather than later.
Don´t know what you´re fussing about, #1. why shouldn´t Putin say that God created us equal? And he didn´t say Obama is a nice guy. He merely very very politely did NOT gloat or make fun of him but is being as gracious in victory as possible. And by the way - You are missing the event that this is. This is an astounding novelty here. He is finding common ground with us in terms of how we all pray to our one Creator.
FTA: "Mercenaries from Arab countries fighting there, and hundreds of militants from Western countries and even Russia, are an issue of our deep concern. Might they not return to our countries with experience acquired in Syria? After all, after fighting in Libya, extremists moved on to Mali. This threatens us all."
This is the type of editorial from Putin one keeps to later bring up when he pushes one of his satellite states into some mischief, usually nuclear proliferation, like Iran & North Korea. The other thing that struck me is he mentions Mali, the thrown away African terrorist threat from the 0bama/Romney debate on foreign policy. Recently the CIA acknowledged this, and refused to correct 0bama before the election, even when it was part of Romney´s then daily briefings. Now Putin specifically names this small African state.
I wonder if Obama still thinks that Putin is like the bored kid sitting in the back of the classroom. Every day Putin plays a new trump card and boxes in Obama even more. Putin will now press forward to have tremendous influence over the entire Middle East.
Say what you will about Putin´s character or motives, the article is a masterful piece of persuasive writing -- in sharp contrast to the embarrassing mishmash the leader of the free world subjected us to last night.
"There are big countries and small countries, rich and poor, those with long democratic traditions and those still finding their way to democracy. Their policies differ, too. We are all different, but when we ask for the Lord’s blessings, we must not forget that God created us equal."
There´s Pootie trying to sound like Mike Huckabee.
Putin says: "No one doubts that poison gas was used in Syria. But there is every reason to believe it was used not by the Syrian Army, but by opposition forces, to provoke intervention by their powerful foreign patrons, who would be siding with the fundamentalists."
This is key problem. Maybe it was the Sunni Brothers that did this. Obama should show all the evidence he says we have if he wants to improve his situation. The CIA is not what it used to be.
What upsets me is that the NYT gives this guy a forum. What the heck? He makes BO look so weak, tells the people of the USA we (as a country) aren´t exceptional? And the NYT allows the USA to be knocked down a couple pegs? Really?
JOHN KERRY: Our ruse of weakness and capitulation is working, sir. Everyone thinks Putin ate your lunch. OBAMA: Yes. All part of the plan. JAY CARNEY: Plan, sir? You never told. . . OBAMA: Through a combination of bluster and pusillanimity, Jay, I tricked Putin into going all in on Syria--16 warships in the Med and a big push to rearm Assad. It’s taking a chunk out of Russia’s budget. CARNEY: But our friends in Eastern Europe now doubt our commitment to protect them from the waking Bear. OBAMA: As well they should. I want Putin to start thinking about reconstituting the Warsaw Pact and extending Russian influence to the Atlantic as we pull back. KERRY: See, Jay, the only way to check a new Russian Empire is to encourage one resembling the old Soviet model. OBAMA: In two years Russia becomes big, bloated, and hidebound again. More territory to defend, obscene military budgets, restive populations. The Soviet Union 2.0—a lumbering, doomed giant. Meanwhile, we’re sitting pretty on the sidelines, a no-threat former superpower watching it all go down. KERRY: The president’s playing the long game, Jay. We retreat and let Russia become the counterweight to China and Iran so we can concentrate on implementing ObamaCare. Next week, the president will deliver an address to the U.N. calling for the dissolution of NATO as a cold war relic. CARNEY: Better let me write this one, Mr. President. Lately your speeches have been full of ground round and curry, dignifying frothing. KERRY: Meanwhile, I’ll announce U.S. participation in Putin’s proposed economic initiative to help ease transition to Russian hegemony on the Continent. He’s calling it the ´´Greater European Co-Prosperity Sphere.´´ CARNEY: Has a nice ring to it, sir.
Putin goes over to Obama´s schoolyard, torments him, and then gives him a wedgie.
To add further insult, Putin then manages to get Barry´s school newspaper to run a piece scolding and lecturing him.
Of course, nowhere does the school newspaper point out that this guest columnist himself has a history of aggression and thuggery around the world, but, hey, it´s the NYT and they´ve always deferred to international bullies.
I am astounded by the posters here who think this is a lovely article and we should all be grateful that this nice man is reaching out to America. The day after Putin forced Obama to stand down in Syria, and make no mistake, Obama was happy to comply, he made a deal with Iran to sell them more arms and help fund another nuclear reactor. Iran has pledged to wipe out Israel and attack the United States. See any connection here? I do not intend to be lectured to about American exceptionalism by the leader of a Communist country who is backing our enemies.
Putin is elevating himself and Russia and demeaning Obama and the United States. The trouble is that Obama, in his arrogance, has played right into his hands. Putin is in the catbird seat and he will not relinquish it anytime soon. Obama is so busy preening and posturing that he allows Putin to actually be thought of as reasonable and statesman-like. Clearly, Putin has his number and has just achieved checkmate on the world´s stage. Russia has been waiting for decades to regain world influence after Reagan bested it. This must be sweet revenge for Putin.
Putin is basically telling the world that the U.S. is no longer the world´s superpower. The challenge will go unanswered by those who could - and should - respond to it, proving Putin correct, at least from a political standpoint.
But this country is NOT just the elected fools in charge. We are built of far sterner stuff than that, and We, The People, ARE still the #1 source of good in the world. No country helps others to the degree we do, even when it´s self-defeating and stupid to do so.
Your country and ours are NOT the same, Mr. Putin. "The world", including Russia, has not earned the right to govern other countries´ actions. Most of the countries you would grant the power to tell other countries how to treat their people are far too careless about their own people to do so credibly. America is special, because its people are special. Its people are special only because more of them than you can know aren´t as ignorant, selfish and vapid as you believe them to be, based on what you see in far too many of their elected representatives. Their people are special because for far more than you can know, their God isn´t one of their own creation. It isn´t power, it isn´t money, it isn´t sex. It´s the One that enables Americans to be great, and to do great things.
´You shall know them by their fruit´. Russia has made great progress in transforming itself from a state of communism to open market capitalism. This has been a difficult task and not one for the faint of heart. One sure sign of change is the open display of reverence to God. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEETt4olVnc We are cautioned in Proverbs to ´lean not unto our own understanding´.
I´m with #2 and others in seeing the glass as half-full. Yes, he got in a dig at our self-perception as being "exceptional" (and we are an exceptional nation, IMO) - he´s still a competitor, after all. Brush that aside. However, he writes this from the position of a peacemaker. We can work with that.
Reagan leveraged Gorbachev´s stated policies of Glasnost and Perestroika, by challenging Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall and standing firm at Rejkajvik (despite the consternation of his Establishment advisers), to facilitate an end to the Cold War. A similar opportunity has presented itself here. Now that Putin has taken on the mantle of ME peacemaker and has taken ownership of his ability (which we have known all along) to do something about it: we should hold him to his word as Reagan did Gorbachev.
As posters above note, it is disquieting that Mr. Putin comes across more credible than our POTUS. If we had someone with Reagan´s mindset in the WH, he would seize this opportunity to challenge Mr. Putin:
"Mr. Putin: if you seek equality among nations, if you seek peace in the Middle East, stop the WMD. Control these chemical weapons in your client Syria, and stop the development of a nuclear bomb by your client Iran. Affirm that Israel is also equal under God. Stop frustrating international efforts in this regard."
Where Putin errs, is in his dismissal of American exceptionalism. That galls Americans.
Putin misunderstands what that means to us. We don’t, as he implies, think we’re inherently better or nobler than others, but rather that we, America, have done more to free people around the world, than any other nation in history. And we have done so at our own risk and expense, and without taking anything in return (despite the accusations of US imperialism that he Left so loves to rail about). And that makes us exceptional.
While Putin does have point about America striking out militarily hither and yon, and having an attitude of “you’re with us or against us”, a jibe at “cowboy” GWB, he must put that in the context; GWB’s point was, more precisely, “Will will make no distinction between terrorists and those who harbor them.”
That stance was entirely justified post 9/11, and still is. Putin and the world should understand that America, if her citizens are attacked by terrorists, will visit on those attackers an immediate, unimaginable ferocity of violence, period. (At least so it was under Republican leadership; now, not so much, cf Benghazi. But Obama isn’t forever.)
Putin may be on to something about American exceptionalism if I read his words correctly. The Founding Fathers were exceptional. Profoundly so. Our republic is exceptional. The Greatest Generation was exceptional.
The current electoral majority (the majority which elected and re-elected Barack Obama for no discernible good reason) is not only not exceptional, but an embarrassment to the idea of America.
51% of Americans ARE exceptional! They are the achievers who feed the World, offer the most aid to other Nations, sent a man to the moon, and began the Space Station. We were first with computers, Iphones, Ipads, farm production. Liberals would like to destroy individualism and competition, they hate winners and losers. We are becoming weak due to socialist leadership, their dream is to consider us as groups, not individuals. WE ARE NOT, we have Individual rights. We are on the cusp falling. Energy fed our industrial success, oil supplied our military in WW2 victory. We must drill OUR resources to remain the Leaders of the FREE world.
I find it interesting that Putin references God. When Bush and Putin met at the ranch Putin was wearing a cross that had belonged to his mother. Obama would never wear a cross, and in fact, had a cross covered when he gave a speech. When Obama ends his speeches with "God Bless America" it seems he says it because it is expected but there is never any sincerity in his inflection.
Note Putin´s deference to the UN as well - bearing in mind that the UN is a Soviet construct established by the known Soviet spy Alger Hiss and comrades. If any of Stalin´s strategic mastery lives on (which IMHO it does within the Russian elite culture), Putin is not to be trusted.
It is in Putin´s and Obama´s interest to have a weakened USA. For Putin - no explanation why. For Obama - because he hates this country and the only prestige he cares about is his own and so long as he can enjoy all the trappings of being President, what does he cares what world leaders thinks of the USA.
I have a different take on this piece. Putin is really speaking to the UN Delegations and the heads of state traveling to NYC for the opening of the UN General Assembly next 2 weeks. Check out how many times he refers to the UN in his first several paragraphs.
Their communist dictator uses more sensible words (for whatever they´re worth) than does our communist muslim imposter. We are losing ground with the conspiratorial cabal that is in charge of the White House. Add to it a drunken, slothful Congress that allows all this debt craziness to run wild, with a mainstream media and press that no longer reports any Washington wrongdoings. It´s time for every citizen to speak up, bi pass a sick Congress and throw out the imposter for his forged birth certificate, for his treasonous, criminal acts. Imagine, we are in such a sorry state, that a foreign dictator can write a sensible sounding letter in the failing, socialist, New York Times, because the person we elected President is incapable of representing the people and is headed for the destruction of this great country, America.
My take is that Putin is letting everyone know he is in charge, the United States is now just any other nation and nothing special. He is letting Obama know that he makes the decisions and he controls the UN. No longer is the United States the superpower. Just putting his foot down on everyone and he can do it, because there is no adult in Washington DC to deal with him. I do wonder what the next three years will bring. May God Bless the United States, put that in your pipe Putin and smoke it.
First, this strikes me as an offer of a handshake directly to the American people. Putin knows very well that the Obama crew is temporary, but the American people don´t change. Rousing the sleeping giant, as Yamamoto put it, is not what he wants.
The second thing has been gnawing at me. What just happened here? Assad admitted he has chemical weapons, and Russia agreed to force him to give them all up. And America gave up .... what? Obama made to look like a fool? We knew that already. What am I missing? How did this cost us anything?
Uh oh. Answering my own question. What indeed DID America just give up? Is there a secret deal, like Kennedy made? Did Obama just secretly sell out one of our allies? Remember, when you look around the poker table and can´t figure out who the sucker is, it´s you. Bibi should have someone check his back.
This is bad. Putin is bad. Obama is bad. There is nothing good here. I agree with all the posters who have read between the lies...er, lines.
America IS exceptional. Americans ARE a force for good in this world. We should not be ashamed to be American. Teach your children and grandchildren to never give up their heritage as Americans. God Bless America!
#19 nailed it. Obama provided Putin with a gratuitous golden opportunity, out of his chest-thumping talk of bombing Syria.
What will be VERY interesting will be if Obama has the stones to give a strong unambiguous speech to the nation rebutting this outrageous move by Putin.
#13, brilliant, as always! "Lately your speeches have been full of ground round and curry, dignifying frothing." Genius! My only issue is that BO couldn´t speak that coherently if his life depended on it. "Pusillanimity" is waaaay beyond his grasp. Kudos!
I did not read the article, the NYT will get no click from me.
However, just like in Syria, where no party deserves our support, Putin and Obama are both bad actors. Neither one is worthy of our praise.
And about Putin´s claim that we are not exceptional - Mr. Putin, our American Exceptionalism reaches far beyond the man whom is our current occupant of the White House. Our exceptionalism runs deep and wide and is in our very spirit and core. Our morality and quest for justice will survive long after our current Poseur is out of the picture.
I say this without reading the article. I won´t read it. There was a time that the Times would be burnt to the ground for sedition. This is not protected freedom of speech. It is communist propaganda. Flexibility my ***.
The Bear is a killer bear make no mistake. But let us hope that this man understands that while obama may be a weak fool, with idiot Americans electing him, there are also still plenty of real men and women who do not trust him and are ready to fight to protect this country ! We have a fool for president but we are not all of the same ilk.
While Obama parties with the likes of J-z, golf’s, vacations, schmoozzzzez with Hollywood liberals, plays Chicago politics for personal power, Putin checkmates him in three (or two?) moves ... Sad to see how far down the presidency has descended. Obama belongs on Dancing with the stars, and not sitting in the Oval office.
Mr. Putin, or his writers, writes a beautiful letter and makes some good points. Additionally, I have more respect for him than I have for Barack Obama, and I believe he is as believable as Obama.
However, to naively take his letter at his word is silly. He is definitely a better leader than Obama who is NO leader, but I don´t believe he is a more honest man. I place no trust in either. Let´s not forget that many of our people fell for Obama based on his speeches and nothing more. How´d that work out for everyone?
Too bad Mr. Putin and all leaders don´t tell their citizens they are special ...... it might make for a better world.
My, Mr Putin got brazen...taking his case directly to the American people...But something´s missing from this latest crisis that should at least have been mentioned peripherally. Remember Snowden? We don´t know what information he actually disclosed to Russia, but Putin can certainly claim he knows some of our government´s most highly classified secrets. Perhaps Putin´s just giving Obama a taste of his own medicine by using some classic Chicago thug bribery techniques? That might explain Putin´s sudden boldness via the NYT.
This whole situation must have the Times all atwitter. They have always favored Communism, hence space in their editorial section for Putin Speak. Sort of odd, wouldn´t you say?
Then their wholesale support for Obama, a not so hidden Marxist, and another foreigner to boot. Result... everything they do or say supports the Marxist King. Does anyone seriously doubt why they are going broke.
After reading the remarks from Times readers, their commenters just cannot let loose of their long insistence that there were no WMD´s in Iraq. They still blame Bush for invading that Liberal sanctuary and ridding the world of the dictator who gassed 50,000 of his own people. A little odd don´t you think.
These same writers just cannot admit that Syria was the recipient of Iraq´s gas stockpile. That would mean that there were WMD´s in Iraq and Bush was 100% correct.
There is this though, and it is enough to give Liberals nightmares. When Islamists start killing Russians, Putin kills them. When Islamists kill Americans at Benghazi, Egypt and other places around the globe, Obama helps them or insists there were video´s that made them mad, so of course they aren´t to blame. Sort of a ´get out of jail´ excuse.
Putin = KGB How about 0bama = NSA? Or DEA or EPA? You see what I´m getting at? Ruby Ridge - Randy Weaver´s son and wife-Waco (incidentally use of chemical weapons against American civilians). Granted these agencies operated under many administrations. 0bama just refined them. I found Putin´s letter to be very interesting. I lived through the "cold war." I was in the Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis. I watched the walls come down in E Germany. I watched the USSR crumble. Yes, it´s confounding to find "comfort" in Putin´s letter. Yes, I know what he is/was. I have never heard these things from the king. Never. I am pleased with his letter. Even knowing his background. No we aren´t a super power anymore. Thanks, King. We keep our exceptionalism. No other country in the world is as generous and compassionate. (That´s you and me and not the government). Putin´s letter...read it again.
Don´t ever trust Putin, especially just because he wrote a persuasive article that at points made sense.
What I find particularly irritating is his assertion that we "lost" in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Regardless of the bungling of this administration, we WON in both those countries.
We went into Afghanistan to destroy terrorist training bases and kill as many terrorists as we could. We did that. We gave the Afghans the chance at a free country without the Taliban. We did that. Now, if the Afghans want to blow that opportunity, future blood is on their hands, not ours.
We went into Iraq because of WMD (likely moved to Syria with help from the Russians, but never mind) and because of a tyrant that ignored sanctions from a previous conflict and fired on our aircraft. Although we did not find WMD, it certainly was no longer in the hands of a madman, we toppled that regime and its horrific torture of citizens, and gave THOSE people a chance for a better society. If they want to squander that as well, that´s their issue.
I refuse to stand by and let history be re-written by the likes of progressives and that bald beady-eyed KGB agent from Russia.
First, nice "Get" OP. I´ll bet everyone on this thread wanted to post this historic article in "Pravda-on-the-Hudson." Heck, it even inspired the Sagman to give us a special treat (# 13).
We can analyze Putin´s motive(s) for this article all day. To me, one thing is clear: He is doing what is best for his beloved Russia. Care to make any (obvious) comparisons?
The current state of affairs RE Syria should not surprise Israel and Netanyahu. Sure, the Russian Bear is getting good press and the world is getting a better idea of what an oaf Obama is. But this changes nothing,
Israel has known for a long time that AS LONG AS OBAMA IS IN OFFICE she will have to face Iran, Syria, Hezbollah, and the rest of her numerous enemies, alone.
But those of us who know are aware that Israel will never have to face her mortal enemies alone.
We are rather like a fat drunk guy. Our people did not care enough to participate in and be critical of our political processes. Now, America is out of shape and so disorganized as to be like that drunk. Putin is the passerby who sees a helpless America and basically is rolling us- He´ll take what ever he can get, all the while saying sweetly, "Need some help there big fella?" while he sifts through our pockets for loose change and strips our watch. We better shape up. Others are watching. We have already lost our international respect- no one will ever trust Øbama again or feel threatened by the US. That bodes evil for the 3.2 years to come at least.
once you are brainwashed into believing that you are not exceptional, are not capable of being exceptional, then you will not be exceptional. (Thank you oh so much lib teachers for encouraging mediocre no-fail). Obama wants us to be mediocre. Putin wants us to be mediocre.
America isn´t exceptional because of her support for other countries or because of special talent and intelligence. Alexis de Tocqueville is often quoted about his looking for America´s greatness and finding it in her churches. He said, ´´The Americans combine the notions of Christianity and of liberty so intimately in their minds that it is impossible to make them conceive the one without the other.´´
We know that the writing of the Constitution wasn´t going well until Ben Franklin called for a time of prayer because ´except the Lord build the House they labour in vain that build it.´ They knew that the miraculous document they forged was unique and good because of God´s aid in forming it.
We were known as a Christian nation. But as Ronald Reagan said, ´´If we ever forget that we are One Nation Under God, then we will be a nation gone under.´´
There was an old spiritual that said that everybody talkin´ about heaven ain´t agoin´ there. Not everyone talking about God is talking about the same God, either. Putin can talk about God, but I feel sure he´s not a follower of our Lord.
The Bible speaks of drawing a country in the north down against Israel. God said He would put a hook in their ´´jaw.´´ Russia won´t even know it´s being reeled in until they´ve attacked Israel.
I woke up this mornin´ with the sundown shinin´ in I found my mind in a brown paper bag, but then... I tripped on a cloud and fell-a eight miles high I tore my mind on a jagged sky I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in
(Yeah, yeah, oh-yeah, what condition my condition was in)
I pushed my soul in a deep dark hole and then I followed it in I watched myself crawlin´ out as I was a-crawlin´ in I got up so tight I couldn´t unwind I saw so much I broke my mind I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in
(Yeah, yeah, oh-yeah, what condition my condition was in)
Someone painted "April Fool" in big black letters on a "Dead End" sign I had my foot on the gas as I left the road and blew out my mind Eight miles outta Memphis and I got no spare Eight miles straight up downtown somewhere I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in
I said I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in Yeah yeah oh-yeah
Putin is a Russian nationalist. Everything that he says and does is designed to advance the interests of Russia and Himself. He is also apparently a member of the Russian Orthodox Church.
During the Cold War, for a number of years I held a job where on occasion I came in professional contact with high ranking Soviet commanders. I cannot ever remember any of them being other then very professional. I also became aware that a good portion of them were definitely not atheists, but in order to keep their positions, had to keep their religious believes under raps.
Another thing that I learned was that you never trust the Russians. Ronald Reagan had it right in his dealings with the Russians when he diplomatically said "Trust but Verify".
Remember, this bit of advice is coming from a country whose leadership once threatened to bury the US and he pounded his shoe on the table to emphasize his extreme hatred.
Now the tables are turned. Russia has competent leadership and we have a tempermental child who is trying to play the tough guy, while looking silly and powerless. It was a master stroke for Putin to address the American people directly while we have stopped listening to our own stooge in the White House years ago. You know that obama is seething over this and asking Valerie what to do next.
Oh yes we are an exceptional country...yeah right. Here is what makes us so: Anthony Weiner...Ted Kennedy...Barack Hussein Obama...Hillary Clinton...Jeb Bush....Bill Clinton...Miley Cyrus....Lois Lerner...Mosques built at 911 site...Fast and Furious...IRS...Benghazi...11 million invaders from South America...NAACP...Al Sharpton...Jane Fonda...our disgusting colleges and universities...and on and on... America is no longer ´exceptional´....what a joke. Now lets all clap like seals to you naive folk who think we are exceptional.
Many great and important comments. #s 13, 20, 44, 61 & 65 especially merit the Multiple Click Award.
Remember, BO himself does not believe in American Exceptionalism, as he asserted back in ´09 when asked about this very thing. He said basically that every Nation believes itself to be "exceptional", so we´re really just one of the gang.
You explained it best, #27. Half of us are exceptional, the other half are responsible for the fool in the White House who brought us this downgrade and embarrassment.
I guess now is a good time to stop concentrating on our work, our families and our past achievements and take the time and effort to "reengineer" the US Government. It is within our capabilities, as is again becoming the greatest country in the world.
As for Russia, a major conflict with them will not result in a stalemate or a win. It will be checkmate for the entire world. We don´t want to go there yet.
The message here is that the Obamboozler is not and can not commmunicate with the American people and left the door open for Putin. Vlad walked in and left Barry floating in the punch bowl of diplomatic relations!
Sagman´s description: full of ground round and curry, dignifying frothing, is amazing.
I have thought about this article all morning and read all the comments.
Maybe, just maybe, Putin lit a fire under those of us who work, pay taxes and truly care about what our Founding Fathers believed, wrote and lived. Is it time to pledge our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor, too?
We must do what is right and reassertion our exceptionalism. It´s still here and Putin just challenged us in spite of zippy who thinks he and his transformation of us still count.
This was an amazing piece . Putin has some terrific writers and he hit on a lot of truths and made common sense, unlike Obama. I found his Op Ed to be Reagnesque in many ways. Too bad Obama didn´t deliver this Tuesday night . Putin is the undisputed leader of the world . I guarantee he doesn´t spend his evenings sipping pink champagne in a hot tub with a male companion, like Barry does with Reggie Love. Nor does Putin spends endless hours on the golf course and take advice from Jay -Z and Beyonce. As far as the " exceptional " remark- on Tuesday night Barry said that only the US cares about gassed children and the US is the only country that cares about keeping their own kids safe. Because we are exceptional. Putin and a lot of others took offense at Barry´s insulting narcissism. Putin recognizes that Afghanistan is reeling and will no doubt fall back into the terrorist´s hands when the international forces leave. He recognizes that Libya is a mess as well as Iraq. No phony happy talk and bragging like Obama usually does about his " successes " in Afghanistan and Iraq. From Putin, not Obama : " Reports that militants are preparing another attack — this time against Israel — cannot be ignored." From Putin, not Obama : " There are big countries and small countries, rich and poor, those with long democratic traditions and those still finding their way to democracy. Their policies differ, too. We are all different, but when we ask for the Lord’s blessings, we must not forget that God created us equal ". I trust Putin more than I trust Obama.
RE #72: Sarah Palin, Tom McClintock (CA), Rick Perry (TX), Scott Walker (WI), Bobby Jindal (LA), Mike Lee (UT); churches and charities across America sending people, medicines and food to foreign countries around the world; homeless centers and centers for abused women and children who give up their time and finances to get involved and help the helpless. My best friend in Orange County, Ca who volunteers her time and money to help abused women, my sister in Ca who gives up her summers to organize vacation Bible school for disadvantaged children, my friend in Indiana who has nine children and still gives her time and non-existent funds to help poor children in Haiti (and has taught her adult children to do the same; Americans who roll up their sleeves every day, work hard, love their families, and refuse to be victims of this regime...etc, etc.
This country is filled with exceptional Americans who will never make the news, but they change lives daily for the better.
Putin is right. We should be careful how we throw around the term "exceptional". Something that should never have been thrown around throughout the storied rise of President Obama. How can we be exceptional when we vote in such an amateurish fool to lead our country in domestic and foreign affairs. I expect more from our exceptional society. Putin struck gold in this crisis, and with this article, he is rubbing salt in the wound by coming out as the good guy to the American people.
A nation is judged by it´s leaders and actions. We voted that clod in the WH into office (I know, I know. I didn´t vote for him either but the majority did), we voted for the rather UN-exceptional bunch of dimwits of both parties in the senate, and look what kind of dithering, buffoonish behavior we get.
Like it or not, if judged by the men we seek to lead us and the stupidity of the general populace and those leaders, we are no longer an exceptional nation. Obama IS how the world sees us.
And like him or not, Putin schooled pitiful Obama. He beat him up, stole his lunch, and ate it right in front of him. When even the NYT realizes this, it would be wise to wake up and smell the coffee.
I liked the piece, and I even read it three times to be sure I didn´t end up sounding like a traitor. Mr. Putin has a lot to say, and I can´t see that anything he said isn´t true. As for American exceptionalism -remember when Hillary gave someone the red button with the words "reset" misspelled! But there´s an silent ad for September 11 on The Connection using the Budweiser horses that I think is really exceptional. So it´s all around us, and also in lots of these posts.
Anyway, I think Putin should be given the benefit of the doubt. He might be having his Road to Damascus moment. Right now I trust him a lot more than others whose motives seem to be all about themselves rather than the people in Syria.
The U.S. is lectured by a government that is responsible for the execution of 700,000 dissidents who appeared to disagree with their government and starvation 5-10 million by government control of agriculture. Enough said.
Wait...the NY Times featuring articles written by a communist...is this really news?
Also, I guess I was the only one who noted the striking similarity between Putin speaking soothingly and quasi-sincerely to the American people in the same way that the leader of the Martians in "Mars Attacks" spoke to the American people just before (and then during) zapping everyone in sight.
I would also note that Obama himself is a spitting image of that Martian leader. Spit.
President Putin (and President Obama), the United States of America is exceptional because its forefathers founded a government that required that God-given freedoms of every type reign supreme. The government was to serve the states and then to leave them alone. As citizens, we never asked the government to have a part in setting up our churches, our factories, our railroads, our cities, our farms, our hospitals, our schools, or our lives – we just did it and we did it spectacularly. We formed the most successful and vibrant nation on earth. We weren’t selfish about it, either. We invited the world to escape whatever hardships and tyrannies they were experiencing and to come and share in our freedoms and successes. We welcomed all with open hands and open hearts.
Not ‘exceptional’?? We continue to feed the hungry, heal the sick, provide protection, and respond to disasters in every country of this world. We are loyal and friendly – compassionate and generous. We offer a hand to all who are willing to take it. What would be the state of the world right now if there never was a United States of America?
#70 and others, we should not be fooled into thinking that progressive politicians, Hollywood actors, Jay Z, Beyonce, the Kardashians, or Miley define us – they do not. Our Volunteer Military Members, Dr. Benjamin Carson, Medal of Honor recipients Army Staff Sgt. Ty Carter and Staff Sergeant Salvatore Giunta, our hospice workers, our educators, our doctors, our nurses, our policemen, our firemen, our clergy, our volunteers of every type - all Americans who quietly do their duties as parents, workers, helpers, and protectors are the Americans of today who do define us.
How dare anyone say that the United States is not exceptional – we are humbly extraordinary!
Pootie poot put the big smack down on Dear Leader. He put the hurtin for certain on our Fresh Prince of Pitching and Putting. He stuck a 2x4 in the spokes of his Marthas Vineyard rental beach cruiser. How appropriate he delivered his Magna Carta of the Fairway Woods on 9-11. It´s nice he pointed out to Oh-Bomb-Ah that we are supporting known terrorists that are funded and manned by designated terrorist organizations which are hell-bent on overthrowing the Syrian government at all costs no matter what it takes, how many die or how much it costs. They want another Islamic state and the prize is being handed to them by our Boy Who Would Be King. Isn´t there something wrong about this scenario?
#72 The TEA Party. Every ordinary American citizen here on Lucianne´s website. Ms. Lucianne herself. We all come from disparate backgrounds and levels of education. Like the founders, we are joined together by our love of liberty and God. Our sacred Constitution was borne from those truths. It offends me that a godless Communist is given the ability to address our uninformed populace.
Like shifting Teutonic plates resulting in a huge earthquake, the balance of power in the world has shifted. With this beautifully written op ed, Putin appears to be the voice of reason, the voice of peace, the grown up in the room. The danger this presents to the US and the world is incalculable. When this KGB thug lectures us on the propriety of following the law and lectures us on how rude our belief in American exceptionalism is, we can only shudder at what is about to come in the world. Putin warns of international chaos, and we can be assured he will see that this is a self fulfilling prophecy. Zero has done what he was put into office to do. He can now play golf every day. Obamacare is just the cherry on top of the cake. My God, what will happen to this beloved country.
A year that began with President Barack Obama riding high after his re-election victory and inauguration ends with him in the biggest hole of his presidency. A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds the president with more Americans disapproving of his job performance than ever before; with half saying they’re either disappointed or dissatisfied with his presidency; and with 54% believing he’s facing a long-term setback. Perhaps more significantly, Obama has seen a drop in key presidential attributes, such as being honest and straightforward, being able to handle a crisis and being able to achieve his goals. “These are
The federal health-care law is becoming a heavier political burden for President Barack Obama and his party, despite increased confidence in the economy and the public´s own generally upbeat sense of well-being, a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll suggests. Disapproval of Mr. Obama´s job performance hit an all-time high in the poll, at 54%, amid the flawed rollout of the health law. Half of those polled now consider the law a bad idea, also a record high. The survey of 1,000 adults conducted between Dec. 4 and Dec. 8 found a sharp erosion since January in many of the
House and Senate negotiators announced Tuesday evening a $1.012 trillion two-year budget deal to replace some of the automatic spending sequester budget cuts and avert another government shutdown in January. Rep. Paul Ryan, Wisconsin Republican, said the two-year plan is a win for Republicans since it reduces the deficit by $23 billion without raising taxes or sacrificing core conservative values. “As a conservative, I think this is a step in the right direction. What am I getting out of this? I’m getting more deficit reduction. So the deficit will go down more by passing this than if we did nothing,”
More than half of Senate Republicans facing reelection next year face potentially viable tea party challenges — a historically large threat to the GOP establishment that could, once again, kill the party’s chances of taking back control of the chamber. A surprise challenge to Sen. John Cornyn, the No. 2 GOP leader, emerged at the last minute before Texas’s election filing deadline late Monday, and on Tuesday a conservative group with deep pockets threw its financial support behind a radiologist, who has never run for office, in a primary against Sen. Pat Roberts (Kan.), a 16-year veteran. Many of the
The current continuing resolution on federal spending expires in January, and Paul Ryan (on behalf of the Republican House) has been negotiating with Patty Murray (on behalf of the Democratic Senate) for an agreement to set spending levels for the remainder of FY 2014. It is not hard to understand the political considerations that drive House Republicans: the Democrats have been threatening to shut down the government again, as a means of diverting attention from the Obamacare fiasco. Republican understandably don’t want that to happen. But in policy terms, today’s agreement, while not terrible, represents a step backward. Spending levels
Senator Marco Rubio (R., Fla.) was quick to announce his opposition to the Murray-Ryan budget deal: We need a government with less debt and an economy with more good paying jobs, and this budget fails to accomplish both goals, making it harder for more Americans to achieve the American Dream. Instead, this budget continues Washington’s irresponsible budgeting decisions by spending more money than the government takes in and placing additional financial burdens on everyday Americans. In the short run, this budget also cancels earlier spending reductions, instead of making some tough decisions about how to tackle our long-term fiscal challenges
Senator Ted Cruz (R., Texas) walked out of the memorial service for Nelson Mandela when Cuban “president” Raúl Castro began speaking. “Senator Cruz very much hopes that Castro learns the lessons of Nelson Mandela,” said Sean Rushton, Cruz’s communications director. “For decades, Castro has wrongly imprisoned and tortured countless innocents. Just as Mandela was released after 27 years in prison, Castro should finally release his political prisoners; he should hold free elections, and once and for all set the Cuban people free.” Earlier in the day, President Obama shook hands with Castro.
SECAUCUS, N.J. -- Forget about setting up those kegs or buffet tables in the parking lot before this season´s Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium. There will be no tailgating, according to the game´s committee CEO, Al Kelly. "You will be allowed to have food in your car and have drink in your car," Kelly said. "And provided you´re in the boundaries of a single parking space, you´ll be able to eat or drink right next to your car. However, you´re not going to be able to take out a lounge chair, you´re not going to be able to take out
One of Congress‘ staunchest critics of Obamacare released a report Monday that cheers on legal challenges to the overhaul and says the White House overstepped its authority by delaying aspects of the law. Sen. Ted Cruz, Texas Republican who helped engineer a lengthy government funding stalemate earlier this year in a bid to block money for the new health care law, said many aspects of the Affordable Care Act are “constitutionally or statutorily suspect” and that the entire law should be repealed. While a repeal is unlikely so long as Democrats control the Senate and White House, Mr. Cruz said
The nation’s new health-care law says insurers can’t turn anyone away, even people who are sick. But some companies, patient advocates say, have found a way to discourage the chronically ill from enrolling in their plans: offer drug coverage too skimpy for those with expensive conditions. Some plans sold on the online insurance exchanges, for instance, don’t cover key medications for HIV, or they require patients to pay as much as 50 percent of the cost per prescription in co-insurance — sometimes more than $1,000 a month. “The fear is that they are putting discriminatory plan designs into place to
There’s nothing like a communal flight with the current president of the United States and his predecessor to make the press miss the days of a communicative commander in chief. George W. and Laura Bush joined the Obamas on Air Force One en route to Johannesburg, South Africa, for a Nelson Mandela memorial service. Hillary Clinton was also on board, with Bill and Chelsea coming to the service from a Clinton Global Initiative event in Rio. The Obamas have stayed in their cabin for the flight, according to the White House pool report from the refueling stop in Senegal, while
The raft of stories over the last week, the latest being today’s piece in Business Insider, about Democratic Party infighting has nicely illustrated something conservatives have known for a while. Complaints over the last few years about the GOP being pulled to the right by conservatives were not about liberals’ desire to meet in the middle and compromise, no matter how much they might decry the supposed extremist drift of the right. What they wanted was their very own Tea Party. It was the same with Occupy Wall Street: the pseudoanarchist gatherings were far more violent than Tea Party protests
When I was a kid, I knew two different Santa Clauses. The first had a fat belly, rosy cheeks, a long white beard, and skin as pink as bubble gum. He was omnipresent, visiting my pre-school and the local mall, visible in all of my favorite Christmas specials. Then there was the Santa in my family’s household, in the form of ornaments, cards, and holiday figurines. A near-carbon copy of the first one—big belly, rosy cheeks, long white beard: check, check, check. But his skin was as dark as mine. Seeing two different Santas was bewildering. Eventually I asked my father what
US President Barack Obama may have moved the masses attending Nelson Mandela’s memorial service with his stirring eulogy, but it was his grinning "selfie" with the Danish and British premiers that set social networks abuzz. In a candid moment captured by a photographer, Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt can be seen holding up her smartphone, with Obama lending a helping hand, as they pose for a picture with David Cameron, all three of them smiling broadly in their seats at Soweto’s World Cup stadium.(Snip)Mashable, the news and technology website, ran the photograph under the headline: ‘‘Dear Obama: Funerals are no place
On his way to the podium at the memorial ceremony for former South African president Nelson Mandela, President Obama walked down the line of dignitaries, greeting other leaders there to pay their respects. Among the hands shaken: that of Cuban leader Raul Castro. Obama neither made a special effort to shake Castro’s hand nor to avoid him. A snub might have been awkward: In his speech, Obama praised Mandela’s “greatest gift” as “his recognition that we are all bound together in ways that can be invisible to the eye; that there is a oneness to humanity; that we achieve ourselves by
The Obama State Department has finally released a second round of photos revealing the harrowing devastation wrought by a terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi on Sept. 11, 2012. The new photographs depict rampant damage to the consulate. They show charred walls, smoldering fires, Arabic graffiti defacing exterior walls, and scattered debris throughout. The extent of the damage would lead any reasonably serious person to conclude that this was a cold, calculated attack, carefully coordinated to mark the 11th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001. Unfortunately for the American people, the Obama-Clinton-Rice cabal that led to the Benghazi cover-up was
Johannesburg - A man who provided sign language interpretation on stage for Nelson Mandela´s memorial service, attended by scores of heads of state, was a "fake," the national director of the Deaf Federation of South Africa said on Tuesday. Asked about the claim by The Associated Press, South Africa´s government said it was preparing a statement. Three sign language experts said the man was not signing in South African or American sign languages. South African sign language covers all of the country´s 11 official languages, according to the federation. It wasn´t immediately clear if the unidentified man was using a
A black fashion student says he was brutally attacked by a gang of Hasidic men who shouted anti-gay slurs at him while he was walking through Williamsburg after a night of partying, the Daily News has learned. Taj Patterson, 22, was headed home to Fort Greene around 4:30 a.m. on Dec. 1 when he says more than a dozen ultra-Orthodox Jewish men began assaulting him on Flushing Ave. and yelling, “Stay down, f----t!”
A “presidential selfie” featuring President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron, and Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service began making the rounds this morning, but it’s the person not included in the frame who caught everyone’s attention: As anyone with two eyes and a Twitter account has noticed, Michelle Obama does not appear amused. Of course, though a picture says a thousand words, not all of those words are necessarily true. FLOTUS might not have even known the photo was taking place. Or she could disapprove of funeral selfies. Either way.
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) snapped at conservative groups that have come out in opposition to the budget deal reached Wednesday between Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.). "They´re using the American people for their own purposes. This is ridiculous," Boehner said at a press conference with other members of House Republican leadership on Wednesday. Over the past few days, a number of conservative groups have blasted the deal because it sets discretionary spending levels in the budget higher than previous levels under sequestration. In the past three days, the influential Heritage Action, Club for Growth, Americans
Barack Obama has arrived in South Africa to lead the American delegation at a memorial service for former South African President Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg. But his party is reportedly stuck in traffic and he is said to have arrived late at the stadium for the ceremony. [Snip] But Mr Clinton, Mr Carter and his wife Rosalynn have all traveled separately to the event. According to reports, Mr Obama and his delegation are stuck in a lines of traffic caused by tens of thousands of people making their way to the event. Mr Obama is among the foreign leaders who
President Obama’s job approval among American voters has dropped to negative territory with just 38 percent voicing their approval versus the 58 who says they disapprove, according to a national poll released Tuesday by the independent Quinnipiac University. That is one percent less than the 39% who said they approved of him in last month’s poll. The majority of the 2,692 registered voters the University in early December said that the president is not honest and trustworthy. When asked, “Do you approve or disapprove of the way Barack Obama is handling his job as President?,” respondents gave Obama lackluster ratings
The sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela´s memorial yesterday "made up his own signs," according to South Africa´s deaf federation. "He´s a complete fraud," Cara Loening, director of Sign Language Education and Development in Cape Town, said according to ITV News. "He wasn´t even doing anything, There was not one sign there. Nothing. He was literally flapping his arms around." Delphin Hlungwane, an official South African sign language interpreter at DeafSA, told Reuters:
Looks like this president can’t get away with flirting in front of his wife… It appears that first lady Michelle Obama was none too pleased with the way that President Barack Obama was acting toward Denmark Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt during a ceremony honoring Nelson Mandela, and before too long, they switched seats. This lmao! Michelle Obama vs Prime Minister of Denmark at Mandela´s ceremony. pic.twitter.com/Rq4uF9fTaZ — Stun (@TheBlogPirate) December 10, 2013
