More than a thousand former members and officials of Boy Scouts of America gathered this weekend to create a Christian-based alternative to the BSA. Its goal is to counter what the new groups says is the ´moral free-fall´ of the nation, and ´raise a generation of faithful husbands, fathers, citizens and leaders,´ organizers told the national inaugural convention in Nashville, Tennessee. The move comes in response to the Boy Scouts of America’s recent repeal of a restriction that denied membership to youth based on sexual orientation, which will take effect at the start of next year.
Comments: Good for them! I´m sure Lord Baden Powell will be resting more comfortably.
Pakistan´s security forces have been put on high alert following the US drone strike on Friday which is believed to have killed Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud. A spokesman told the BBC all security measures were now being taken. Pakistan media say Mehsud´s funeral has taken place at an unknown location in the tribal area of North Waziristan. A Pakistan government minister said the drone strike had destroyed attempts to hold peace talks with the militants. Mehsud was killed along with four other people--including two of his bodyguards--when four missiles struck their vehicle in the north-western region of North Waziristan, a senior Taliban official
Have a look at this document, recently debated by the Civil Liberties committee of the European Parliament. It´s a good example of how well-meaning people, convinced that they are standing up for the underdog, can end up doing enormous damage to freedom, to equality before the law and, perversely, to the minorities on whose behalf they presume to speak. The draft Statute for the Promotion of Tolerance runs through all the usual Leftie desiderata: group defamation, hate crimes, yada yada. It argues, without the slightest trace of irony or self-awareness, for statutory tolerance. Not for everyone, though:
Salmonella, insects, excrement and hair found in imported spices, from countries such as India and Vietnam, have caused outbreaks around the world, according to the US Food and Drug Administration. Some 12 percent of imported spices contained what the FDA deemed as ‘filth’--insects, excrement and hair--between 2007 and 2010, the new report said. The imported spices were also twice as likely to contain salmonella as any other inspected foods with almost 7 percent of the goods containing the pathogen during the three-year period. Over three years, 749 spice shipments were refused entry into the US because of salmonella contamination while
President Barack Obama´s affinity for Abraham Lincoln was on display through his political rise, but he won´t be on hand to mark one of the 16th president´s signature moments. Obama has refused to attend the 150th anniversary of Lincoln´s Gettysburg Address in Pennsylvania on November 19. His decision, which has not been explained, has infuriated local media. U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell will represent the administration, sharing keynote speaker status with historian James McPherson. [Snip] ´For a president who has so demonstrably associated himself with Lincoln--the heir of Lincoln´s policies who announced his candidacy from the steps of
An ´anti-government´ gunman who shot dead a TSA agent at an LAX security checkpoint today and wounded five others was carrying a note which said that he ´wanted to kill TSA and pigs´. Paul Anthony Ciancia, aged 23, from Pennsville, New Jersey, stalked through Terminal 3 carrying a high-powered assault rifle on Friday morning as terrified passengers fled the building and others sheltered in lounges on lock down. The gunman, who was dressed in fatigues and carrying multiple clips of ammunition, was believed to be acting alone. One witness said that the shooter walked up to him and simply asked: ´TSA?´
Charleston has topped yet another best-of list, this time as the perfect small city for people looking to start over in life. CreditDonkey, a credit card comparison and financial education website, bestowed the honor on the Holy City in a study posted last week. The site arrived at its picks after studying Census and labor statistics, evaluating such factors as population and income growth, unemployment numbers and the available pool of single adults. The study gave Charleston high marks across the board, noting its “strong tourism industry” and its growing role as a “technology hotspot.” “With strong numbers across each of our indicators,
I can´t quite believe that I´ve just sat through ten minutes of BBC television in which British journalists Owen Jones and Zoe Williams have defended Karl Marx as the prophet of the End of Capitalism. Unbelievable because I had thought Marxism was over with the fall of the Berlin Wall--when we discovered that socialism was one part bloodshed, one part farce. [Snip] Sixty-five million were murdered in China--starved, hounded to suicide, shot as class traitors. Twenty million in the USSR, 2 million in North Korea, 1.7 million in Africa. The nightmare of Cambodia (2 million dead) is especially vivid.
Kenyan warplanes have destroyed an al-Shabaab rebel camp in southern Somalia used to train gunmen who attacked Nairobi´s Westgate shopping mall in September, Kenya´s defence ministry said. Many rebels were killed in the "major aerial offensive" conducted on Thursday, said a ministry statement issued later the same day. The airstrike "completely destroyed an al-Shabaab training camp," located in the Dinsoor region some 300 kilometres (190 miles) west of Somalia´s capital Mogadishu, the statement said. "Initial reports from the ground confirmed that that four technical vehicles and a weapons store were destroyed." "At the time of the airstrike, the camp had over 300 recruits,
NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden has told German officials he is prepared to testify over the extent to which the U.S. government tapped Angela Merkel´s phone, it is claimed. The former CIA intelligence officer met with German MP Hans-Christian Stroebele in Moscow to discuss him becoming a star witness in a possible future public inquiry. And, in an escalation in the diplomatic row, prosecutors have hinted they are prepared to defy an American extradition request in order for fugitive Snowden to testify in Germany. Mr Stroebele told ARD channel: ´He expressed his principle readiness to help clarify the situation. Basis for this is
You’ve got to hand it to Ramussen--they come up with some of the most interesting (and unusual) surveys in America. Their latest poll, released just in time for Halloween yesterday, tested US voter confidence in the federal government, with the following finding: Thirty-seven percent (37 percent) of American adults believe the federal government would do a better job than zombies running the country today. But the latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that most Americans don’t share that view, with just as many (37 percent) who feel zombies would do a better job running the country and another 26
Hollywood blockbuster director James Cameron--best known for his movies Titanic and Dances With Smurfs--has announced his latest project. He is going to make the dumbest, lamest, most tendentious, hysterical, credibility-free and monumentally pointless series in the history of television. (H/T Ken Shock) The series will be called Years Of Living Dangerously [it takes its name from a film called The Year of Living Dangerously, cunningly removing the definite article and then pluralising the first word] and will be based on the cataclysmic event that no one is talking about right now because it hasn´t happened in 17 years and may
Just six people successfully enrolled in health insurance plans through healthcare.gov during the first day of the Obamacare system´s operation, according to Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services meeting notes released Thursday night by a congressional committee. By the end of the second day, a total of 248 people nationwide had bought insurance policies through the federal government´s online portal, whose disastrous launch has become the stuff of late-night TV jokes and a Saturday Night Live skit. [Snip] Turned over by a private Obamacare contractor at the request of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, not by the Obama administration, the
The firestorm over President Obama´s "you can keep your plan" lie now threatens to singe vulnerable Democrats next year, so they´re springing into action to try to force the administration to keep its word. Louisiana´s Mary Landrieu -- an ardent Obamacare supporter -- is scrambling to undo one of the obvious consequences of a law she´s voted to pass, fund, and retain: Sen. Mary Landrieu said Wednesday she would propose legislation to ensure all Americans could keep their existing insurance coverage under Obamacare, a fresh sign of the political problems the law’s rollout has created for congressional Democrats. Landrieu, a Democrat
We are only three and a quarter years away from transforming the United States of America. We may never get back to where we once were, but we can sure roll back much of the mess Barack Obama has created through his misguided policies and serial incompetence. With ObamaCare´s ascendancy and impending crash, America will be on the cusp of transformational action. The misery the ACA will bring to almost every American cannot be overestimated in its ability to incite anger -- and, anger has consequences and repercussions. The failure of the ACA has the potential to make 2014 a wave
The latest NBC/WSJ poll finds that more Americans would vote for a third party candidate for Congress than a Republican. 35% of voters prefer a Democrat, which has been steady for three years. Republicans, however, have experienced an 8-point swing against them since they took control of the House. Today, just 28% of voters say they would vote for a Republican for Congress, while 30% would opt for a third party. The GOP Establishment, engaged in open war against the Tea Party and conservatives, is simply committing political suicide. Listening to the consultant and pundit class who inhabit the "Acela line"
President Barack Obama will not attend next month´s event marking the 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln´s Gettysburg Address in Pennsylvania. Officials at Gettysburg National Military Park said Wednesday that U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell will represent the administration the Nov. 19 sesquicentennial. Jewell and Pulitzer Prize-winning historian James McPherson will share the role of keynote speaker. Other events include a reading of the Gettysburg address by a Lincoln portrayer. Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett also plans to attend the ceremony. Lincoln delivered the immortal words of the address at a dedication of the Soldiers´ National Cemetery on Nov. 19, 1863, more than
In one of the few political jokes attributed to a physicist, Ernest Rutherford once described a public official as being “like a Euclidean point: he has position without magnitude.” With a change of pronoun, he could have been describing Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, who ignored internal warnings about flaws in HealthCare.gov, botched its rollout, minimized her involvement and blamed her contractors. Now, in congressional testimony, she has accepted responsibility without the inconvenience of accountability or the demonstration of competence. Administration incompetence is not the final word on Obamacare, but it is the initial impression.
Every disaster has its moment of clarity. Physicist Richard Feynman dunks an O-ring into ice water and everyone understands instantly why the shuttle Challenger exploded. This week, the Obamacare O-ring froze for all the world to see: Hundreds of thousands of cancellation letters went out to people who had been assured a dozen times by the president that “If you like your health-care plan, you’ll be able to keep your health-care plan. Period.” The cancellations lay bare three pillars of Obamacare: (a) mendacity, (b) paternalism and (c) subterfuge. (a) Those letters are irrefutable evidence that President Obama’s repeated you-keep-your-coverage claim
Politico describes this kindly gesture as “an olive branch.” I agree. Cruz, whose fiery brand of conservative politics continually draws the enmity and wrath of the GOP establishment, has publicly pledged he will not help conservative candidates oust his more squishy, Republican colleagues. The “surrender caucus” can finally breathe a sigh of relief. For now: Extending an olive branch to GOP senators, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is privately making it clear he won’t engage in the Senate Conservatives Fund’s hardball tactics to defeat his colleagues in their primary races. At a closed-door lunch meeting of Senate Republicans Wednesday, the freshman
CNN´s senior legal analyst thinks that any further investigation into Benghazi is looking at a "non-story" since "there is nothing there, in terms of a scandal." On Thursday´s AC360 Later, Jeffrey Toobin scoffed at Republican efforts to gain access to more Benghazi witnesses and CIA operatives. "This is a non-story. Benghazi was a tragedy. It´s not a scandal. Republicans are going to investigate this until the end of the Obama administration. They will find nothing, because there´s nothing to be found there," he insisted. [Video below the break. Audio here.]"We don´t know all the facts about the Civil War. If
Masked from public view, two of the U.S. military’s elite special operations commandos have been awarded medals for bravery for a mission that further undercuts the Obama administration’s original story about the Benghazi tragedy. For months, administration officials have claimed no special operations forces were dispatched from outside Libya to Benghazi during the Sept. 11, 2012, al Qaeda terrorist attacks on the U.S. diplomatic mission and CIA annex because none was within range. The Pentagon, under intense public criticism for not coming to the aid of besieged Americans, published an official timeline in November that carefully danced around the issue. It said time
When German Chancellor Angela Merkel celebrated the opening of the new U.S. Embassy in Berlin in 2008, she could not have imagined that she was blessing the workplace for the largest and most effective gaggle of American spies anywhere outside of the United States. It seems straight out of a grade-B movie, but it has been happening for the past 11 years: The National Security Agency (NSA) has been using Mrs. Merkel as an instrument to spy on the president of the United States. We now know that the NSA has been listening to and recording her cellphone calls since 2002.
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush was the honoree at the annual Jack Kemp Leadership Award Dinner on Monday night, delivering a speech that laid out ways conservatives can advance the “American idea” that the dinner’s namesake advocated. Bush advocated free market principles, especially in energy policy. We should let market forces, not crony capitalism, decide where to invest and how to incentivize citizens to conserve,” Bush, a possible GOP candidate in 2016, said, advocating approval of the Keystone XL pipeline, “rational” regulations on fracking, and opening federal lands to drilling. “A real energy strategy could add an additional 1 percent growth over
In Wednesday’s New York Times, former reporter and columnist Maureen Dowd lamented how the “incalculably destructive Dick Cheney” is once again “ominously omnipresent” in media interviews. She loathed how “he still can’t emulate the respectful restraint of his former partner, George W. Bush. He grabs every opportunity to snarl at President Obama, who is still mopping up from the Bush-Cheney misrule.” How many times has Dowd complained that Bill Clinton couldn’t emulate the “respectful restraint” of either Bush? Lacking either restraint or respect, Dowd borrowed a page from Bill Maher and insisted that if Cheney had been medically disqualified from
