Storied U.S. Barracks Closes

HEIDELBERG, Germany — For Germans and Americans who had long imagined a dramatic coda to the cold war, it came instead in a few solemn, quiet moments. After both national anthems were played, seven American and five German soldiers lowered their national colors, marched at the edge of a bedraggled parade ground and carefully folded the flags for the last time. The ceremony on Friday afternoon, before about 300 onlookers, marked the closing of Campbell Barracks, which, as the headquarters of the United States Army in Europe, issued the orders for the millions of American soldiers — 15 million in

Finally, 24 years after the end of the Cold War...now close most of the other 299 installations and build and expand bases at home with troops and capacity oriented for rapid deployment...and expand our naval fleet...

It was a very special place.. The castle ,the Neckar River, the Student Prince beer stubes. I lived just down river for 3 wonderful years. , in spite of Uncle´s Army..It was 4.30 marks to the dollar then but we were still poor and shopping on the economy mostly window peeking.. The stores were usually closed anyway ..and it was General´s Alley to avoid if you were wearing jeans.. But the air was sweet , cobblestone strees.. Original vw bugs parking everywhere.. The linden trees..

During about 1966 I was assigned to a US Army MP unit stationed at Kornwestheim near Stuttgart that had the mission of relieving most other MP units in West Germany when they underwent their field training exercises. That entailed us moving from garrison town to garrison town for weeks at a time.

I remember one time we relieved the MP unit in Heidelberg, I believe that the MP Station was located in Campbell Barracks. One evening the wife of the Commanding General, US Army Europe called to report that her residence was being burglarized. The residence was located in the hills overlooking the town. However the resident MP unit we relieved never told us where the Commanding General´s residence was, or how to get there. By the time we figured that out the burglars were gone. Upon arrival we were met by the General´s wife, who to say the least was not a happy camper. We could not believe that there was no security force permanently on site as this was during the middle of the Cold War. You can believe that the next morning the crap hit the fan and rolled down hill from at least the O-7 level.

Jonathan Turley, a constitutional law professor at George Washington University, is considered liberal enough to appear on the cable nets whenever a reliable left wing view is needed. But he also has great respect for the constitution´s separation of powers and he has been warning for years about the growing power of the executive branch at the expense of Congress and the Courts. His Op-Ed in the LA Times today nails it: The United States is at a constitutional tipping point: The rise of an uber presidency unchecked by the other two branches. Lena Dunham left little to the imagination during her first hosting gig on "Saturday Night Live." The "Girls" star shed her clothing, as she often does in her hit HBO series, for a skit spoofing the show and its in-your-face nudity. Following the release of the biblical film "Noah" starring Russell Crowe and Emma Watson, comes the story of "the first girl." Dunham appears completely nude calling for her mate. "Adam, a snake just talked to me. Is that normal?" she asked of Adam Driver (Taran Killam), who spoofs her boyfriend Adam in "Girls."

WASHINGTON – Lampooned as a political caveman, Sen. Ted Cruz took a star turn Saturday night at the annual Gridiron dinner. Cruz’s constituency lies far beyond the Beltway. And he has carefully cultivated an “outsider” image somewhat at odds with the annual gathering of the capital’s political and journalism elite – a white tie and tails affair that features satirical songs performed by members of the Fourth Estate. Presidents usually attend, though this year, Barack Obama sent Secretary of State John Kerry in his place. Cruz representing the Republicans, former Florida Gov. McCain said he spoke to Cruz about the comments and it was “cordial” but he took specific offense at the remarks concerning Dole. “He can say what he wants to about me and he can say anything he wants to about Mitt,” McCain said,

Via Matt Lewis, here’s Maverick once again demonstrating that “cordial relationship” in politico-speak means “two people who can’t publicly admit to hating each other but obviously do.” And it’s a cheap shot. Cruz’s point yesterday at CPAC was that Dole, McCain, and Romney lost because they weren’t conservative enough. That’s not because they’re gutless — he said specifically that they were “good” and “decent” men — but because they’re not committed, full-throated ideologues, even less so when they’re fighting for purple states in a national election. We can debate whether that’s true but there’s nothing offensive in raising the subject.

What’s been said of confession — that it is good for one’s soul but bad for one’s reputation — can also be true of testifying to Congress, so Lois Lerner has chosen to stay silent. Hers, however, is an eloquent silence. The most intrusive and potentially most punitive federal agency has been politicized; the IRS has become an appendage of Barack Obama’s party. Furthermore, congruent with exhortations from some congressional Democrats, it is intensifying its efforts to suffocate groups critical of progressives, by delaying what once was the swift, routine granting of tax-exempt status. So, the IRS, far from repenting

One of the most seismic changes in American politics over the last decade has been the emergence of a sharp generational split among the electorate. The Democratic Party owes its success in the last two presidential elections almost entirely to overwhelming support among the very young, which has overcome continued conservatism among older voters. The Pew Research Institute has dominated the field of exploring the ideological cleavages among different generations. And its latest survey shows again how the liberalism of the youngest voting cohort, millennials, remains firm, and likely to continue to recast the electorate. A few charts from the survey

Barack Obama´s parents were "married in name only," according to David Maraniss´s 2012 Barack Obama: The Story. But since definitions of an "in name only" marriage vary, such as "a marriage of convenience" or "a sexless marriage," and Maraniss failed to explain his claim, it is unclear what he was implying. Therefore, Obama´s oft-told nativity story must be searched for the full implications of Obama´s parents´ "in name only" marriage.
