It is very possible that the president will not obtain a join authorization to bomb Syria; if he chooses to go ahead and attack anyway, Obama will incite a constitutional crisis—the first time in history that a president has decided to go to war against the declared wishes of Congress. The public and the courts will adjudicate the legality of that act, and it would be contentious. So the corner that Obama has painted himself into is now inescapable. Defying Congress will put the country into a Watergate/Monicagate mess. Not doing anything will confirm the administration’s impotence and only enhance
This is a great summary of the incompetence of these B team players who are now playing in the big game for the national championship. Turns out they have not been practicing at all, because they never dreamed it would be up to them. They had just been criticizing the A team and the coach while eating junk and smoking.
My favorite part was "He came into the world to save the world, but the world rejected him."
"If the congressional vote is, as I hope, no, Obama should quietly ... (lots of suggestions)"
A narcissist such as BO CANNOT be quiet. His self declaration of greatness is all he really is. Asking him to practice leadership and statesmanlike behavior is absurd. Not once in his presidency´s challenges has BO shown ANY inclination to be anything else but what has gotten him into so much trouble. It has become clear he is not capable of personal revelation or growth.
We are stuck with the child king for another 3 years. Hopefully the world will still be around when he is gone.
"He came into the world to save the world, but the world rejected him" -- posters are aware, of course, of VDH´s allusion?
John 3:17, in the King James Version: "For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved"; and, more colloquially, in the New International Version: "For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him."
One Savior, rejected by far too many. And one pseudo-Messiah, receiving his long overdue comeuppance.
The only point I would agree with is the comment that Putin´s behavior is ´sinister´. Putin´s behavior, as head of Russia, is logical. We Americans may feel that it is Russia´s spot in the world to play second fiddle to the U.S., but the Russians don´t feel that way. Romney was correct that Russia was a big threat; Obama and the liberal press laughed. They were wrong. When you play a football game, the other team isn´t evil because it, too, wants to win. And all too often the powerhouse, cocky team gets beaten by the team with more grit and determination.
I wish Obama would stay on the golf course for the next three years and shut up. What´s the old train robber saying? "He´s gonna get us killed". VDH writes what we already know he just lists it better so I can remember.
If there was ever a time for thoughtful people like Victor to join forces with those truly gutsy people of intelligence, this is the time. It is past time to re-expose the badly forged birth document, to expose this felonious crime for what it, in fact, is. If it is found he is not who he claims to be is not born in the USA, and doctored these critical documents, then, not being president, he cannot be impeached! He can be arrested for treason. Let´s get him out of here, in disgrace, quickly, and move on. The big question is, why have so many good people chosen to ignore this vital question? Victor, too? The birth certificate crime is about to burst out in the news. There will be no stopping of the truth this time.
Contributing to this whole mess is the transparent summer of fun spent by the President. He vacationed and golfed all summer long, and did so with as little concern as to appearance as imaginable.
Putin, Iran and Assad have weighed and measured Obama and have found him wanting, to say the least.
Even now, Putin supports the upcoming report to the UN that the gas attack is a fraud (see Must Reads list). Obama has nobody really inside Syria to inspect the site, while Putin has full access. This UN report is going to humiliate Obama in front of the whole world. Go Putin I say.
The old movie Advance to the Rear was a funny in 1964. Little did we know that it would be obama´s foreign policy plan. Thank you VDH for summing up our world status predicament. The danger of having someone who believes his own press rather thank acknowledging the truth that he has no clue as to what to do as leader of the currently free world.VDH´s idea of Sit down and shut up would have worked but is it too late now and what chance that the man with such large ears will ever listen to anything but the sound of his own voice either bragging or whining and blaming the world.
Doing something small, with or without congressional approval, will be looked upon as a cynical waste of human lives to restore Obama’s credibility, the sort of craven, immoral political act that a younger Obama made a career out of mocking. Nope. Sorry VDH, it won´t be looked upon that way. EVERY bit of the media, education, and Hollywood propaganda machine will declare victory for him and that will be that. Unfortunately, everything and everyone else, especially the GOP is completely irrelevant and will be rendered racists(we conservatives included). The lie will simply be told until it is believed. That´s how and why the man is president, remember? After five years of this, the world caught on, and sees juvenile and narcissistic petulance in lieu of statesmanship Oh for Pete´s sake, VDH, you´re confusing the present United States and world with 30 years ago. NO ONE other than conservatives has caught on and they never will, no matter what the president does. Just because it´s obvious to us what you´re saying, the rest of the world is happily clueless and is only getting "cluelesser" every day in every way. Plus, the world doesn´t want to fight because they think it´s a bad idea. They don´t want to fight because they´re cowards. Otherwise lots of the Middle East would be a glass parking lot.
Obama is like a Hollywood set street scene. Ostensibly real and purposeful but in fact false facade buildings and scripted activity to maintain an illusion. And our hero, the star, reading his script. But America and the world --- and even his fans --- have finally realized it´s all a show, and not a really good one, at that.
And the once fawning reviews are turning scathing. He´s already finished. He just doesn´t know it yet.
I still believe it is ValJar, not the Bamster who is calling the shots, especially on foreign policy. He is nothing more than a figurehead who delivers the message (from the teleprompter) but does not make the decisions. And she was born in Tehran.
Comment #1 is spot on. Obama is convinced that his partisans, sycophants and lapdogs will not only protect him from blame for any outcome, but affix it to others. That is why he dares to callously use this crisis he created to drive everything else out of the spotlight.

#26 - It is unfortunate that the american people elected him. He is a nothing - the ony thing he has is the race card, and it doesn´t work with the likes of Putin. We live in a democracy (the founders considered it a tyranny of the majority), and we all will have to live with the results of the laziness, stupidity, and selfishness of the majority.
"back out of the bombing mode, more quietly continue the belated work of promoting a pro-Western resistance to Assad, mend fences with allies most quietly, and prepare very carefully (but without the bombast) for a real crisis on the near horizon that will need the public, the Congress, our allies, and the president’s full attention and response."
Defying Congress will put the country into a Watergate/Monicagate mess.
Why? The media will spin, weave and cover; and the Republicans will huff, puff and blow into the wind.
As much as I like VDH, it´s as though he does not recognize that the game has changed. There would be no genuine impeachment threat without the full support of the American electorate. And they are the same people who put this man in office . . . twice.
I´m not saying there would be no consequences at all, but we blew past Watergate/Monicagate long ago.
Go no further than #1. Watch one hand, not the other. The other holds all the scandals that could jeopardize his chance of regaining the house. Deflect attention. If he doesn´t have a handy crisis, make one. His only objective is regaining the house. Nothing else matters. If he has complete control again, it´s curtains and lights out.
My conspiracy theory is that cabal that put obozo in power did it because he is 1/2 black for everybody and black for the libs/fascists/commies. We, opposing "transformation of America" can´t criticize His (cabal´s) actions. And obozo can´t shut up because cabal needs him in remaining years to continue "transformation". Unfortunately, we are not Australia - total pu$$ification of the nation, that´s what happened to America!
#20, #24, and #36, VDH (or headline writer) used wasn´tcorrectly. The subjective mood to which you are referring (If it weren´t Syria) would have been incorrect, in this instance, because it would say that this Syria situation is just a hypothetical situation or something contrary to fact.
I´m sure we all wish that this mess was "contrary to fact" or "hypothetical"; however, it is very much a reality.
To use the subjunctive mood, "If it weren´t Syria", would have been correct if this issue was just a figment of someone´s imagination. Remember subjunctive mood is hypothetical or contrary to fact. For example: Subjunctive mood: "If I were a first-grade teacher, I would make every Friday an ice- cream cone day." I am not really a first-grade teacher, but I am describing a hypothetical situation that might occur if I were one. Indicative mood:"When I was a first-grade teacher, we had ice-cream cone day every Friday." In this sentence, I am stating that I really was a first-grade teacher and I really did have Friday ice-cream cone day.
Friday ice-cream cone day is not the usual thing first-grade teachers do, but when I really was a first-grade teacher in Hawaii, the room mothers did do neat things for the classroom.
I really appreciate having a brief grammar discussion. Language is very important and our young minds have some real gaps in English grammar - yes, I also was an English teacher and revel when I get a substitute teaching job in the subject. I also teach diagramming sentences when given the opportunity.
#38, your´s is another Comment i wish i could multiple click!!!
From now on i will always be looking for your grammar lessons! Studying Latin and especially Ancient Greek gave me a better understanding of English grammar than i had ever had. But sometimes we get lazy. Keep us on our feet!
#39 and #40 Thank you for the feed-back. I have very little with which to find fault among the Ldotters.
I think Ldotters are the most astute, perceptive people with whom I have ever had the privilege of associating. Lucianne.com, for me, is a loose federation of citizen reporters who run rings around supposedly schooled journalists. Every morning I know that when I click on Lucianne.com I will find the truth, so why bother with any other medium?
LONDON — Scores of flights were delayed or canceled at Britain´s busiest airports Saturday because of a technical problem at a main air traffic control center. National Air Traffic Service, which controls the crowded airspace over England, said it was having a problem switching between nighttime and busier daytime operations at its control center in Swanwick, southern England. Spokeswoman Juliet Kennedy said the glitch was preventing staff opening new control positions to deal with busier daytime traffic, meaning the service was struggling to handle the volume of flights. "At the moment we don´t know when we will be able to
Big Brother may be watching you. But Glenn Greenwald is watching Big Brother. That´s not a bad take on how the 46-year-old constitutional-law attorney turned crusading journalist turned thorn in the side of the NSA might describe his mission. At least in part. Greenwald is doing more than just watching. By combing through the tens of thousands of classified NSA documents leaked to him by Edward Snowden -- and publishing in newspapers around the globe report after report on the secretive agency´s mass-spying activities -- he´s got the whole world watching too.
The Maryland official who directly oversaw the rollout of Maryland’s health insurance exchange resigned Friday amid continuing technical problems that have hampered the state’s online enrollment efforts. After an emergency session Friday night, the board of the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange accepted the resignation of Rebecca Pearce, its executive director, and thanked her in a statement for working “tirelessly and with tremendous dedication” for more than two years. In recent weeks, the lagging enrollment and online glitches have embarrassed the administration of Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) and become a political liability
Earlier this week, Onyango "Omar" Obama, uncle to Barack, said in a deportation hearing that he stayed with his nephew in Cambridge in the 1980s. The White House had to that point said that the president had never actually met Omar, who was arrested for drunk driving in 2011. Now, two years after the arrest brought denials of any sort of relationship from the White House, the president is admitting that, yes, he briefly lived with his uncle Omar before heading to Harvard Law School in the ´80s. "The president first met Omar Obama when he moved to Cambridge for law
Technicians in the Washington area raced up to a month-end deadline set by the Obama administration to make the troubled federal insurance website work for a majority of users, but officials acknowledged they still faced a raft of problems that could take weeks or more to fix. By Saturday evening, technicians completed a major hardware upgrade, adding computing, storage and database capacity to their data center, said one person familiar with the situation. "There was a big install and it worked," the person said. Contractors believe the upgrades will improve the system´s performance and let it handle more visitors, but the person
The once-sleepy town of Williston sits on the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri rivers in the US state of North Dakota. Five years ago, Williston had a population of 12,000 and was slowly dying on its feet – an agricultural hub marked out from the plains only by the grain silos that stand silhouetted against the big North Dakota skies. The fall-out from a brief oil boom in the mid-1980s had left the town with sky-high debts and a main street filled with empty shops and peeling facades. Young people looking for jobs skipped town at the first opportunity. Today, Williston is
The CIA used a secret base at Guantanamo Bay nicknamed ´Penny Lane´ to turn some of al-Qaeda´s most dangerous terrorists into double agents, US officials have admitted.Inmates languishing under Guantanamo Bay´s harsh regime were offered cash rewards, "hotel" style rooms and even pornography if they agreed to help the CIA track down and kill fellow al-Qaeda operatives. Instead of Guantanamo´s spartan cells, they would be transferred to cottages equipped with private kitchens, showers and televisions, as well as their own patio. A handful then signed agreements to work for the CIA, under which they were released and told to hook up once
DALLAS - A winter storm system blamed for at least 10 fatal accidents in the West and Texas threatens to dampen the Thanksgiving holiday for millions of Americans traveling this week.Nearly 300 American Airlines and American Eagle flights were canceled in and out of Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport on Monday due to the weather, spokeswoman Laura Masvidal said, mirroring disruptions at the air hub a day earlier. Some of the country´s busiest airports - New York, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Boston and Charlotte, N.C. - could see big delays. Icy roads led to hundreds of accidents and at least 10 deaths, half
As he climbed the political heap, a young Barack Obama roused audiences with promises to unite the nation. He was a Senate candidate in 2004 when he told the Democratic national convention, “There is not a liberal America and a conservative America. There is a United States of America.” In 2007, he declared early in his presidential run that “I don’t want to pit red America against blue America. I want to be the president of the United States of America.” A year later, after he won the Iowa caucus, he promised, “We are not a collection of red states and blue
Remember President Barack Obama´s mother? Though the airwaves currently echo with his vow "If you like your plan . . ." I keep remembering Obama´s account of his mother being denied coverage by her insurance company as she lay dying of cancer. The moving and infuriating story was a staple on the 2008 campaign trail. His mother had insurance, he explained, but when she came down with cancer, her insurance company claimed her disease was a "pre-existing condition" and refused to pay for her treatment. In a debate with Sen. John McCain, Obama said: "For my mother to die of cancer
Lawmakers began reacting late Saturday to news of an historic agreement that freezes key parts of Iran´s nuclear program. Here are excerpts from statements responding to the deal: House Majority Leader Eric I. Cantor (R-Va.):"While I await specific details of the interim agreement, I remain concerned that this deal does not adequately halt Iran´s enrichment capabilities. Numerous U.N. Security Council resolutions have called for the full suspension of Iran´s nuclear activities, so it is troubling that this agreement still permits the Iranians to continue enriching. It is critical that distrust but verify be the guiding principle with which we approach
WASHINGTON — On a sultry day in late August, a dozen staff members of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services gathered at the agency’s Baltimore headquarters with managers from the major contractors building HealthCare.gov to review numerous problems with President’s Obama’s online health insurance initiative. The mood was grim. Henry Chao, a 19-year Medicare agency veteran with no formal background in software engineering, was eventually left with day-to-day management of the president’s signature initiative.
Last summer on his $100 million family tour of Africa, Barack Obama hoped for a priceless photo op with Nelson Mandela, the ailing freedom pioneer who went from prison cell to the presidency of South Africa. Mandela´s family suggested that wouldn’t happen. So, the Obamas did a photo op in Mandela´s former prison cell. Which Obama’s White House quickly tweeted upon word of the icon´s passing at 95. [Skip] But Obama was also caught staring at television coverage of Mandela’s passing, which became Obama’s Photo of the Day.
Hardly a week goes by without Hillary Clinton receiving another award. Last month she was named a “Global Champion” by the International Medical Corps, received the American Patriot Award at the National Defense University Foundation and the Hermandad Award from the Mexican American Leadership Initiative. [Snip] At this rate, if a bunch of elderly left-wing Swedes toss her the Nobel Peace Prize early on, the way they did to Obama, it will barely rate mention among all the other glittering trophies that have been bestowed on a woman whose only actual accomplishment was being married to a crooked governor with
Speaker John Boehner said his party should support gay Republican congressional candidates and urged his colleagues to “be a little more sensitive” when running against women. “Some of our members just aren’t as sensitive as they ought to be,” Boehner said. When asked if he thinks his party should support gay candidates, Boehner simply said: “I do.”
Denver - A baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex ceremony must serve gay couples despite his religious beliefs or face fines, a judge said Friday. The order from administrative law judge Robert N. Spencer said Masterpiece Cakeshop in suburban Denver discriminated against a couple "because of their sexual orientation by refusing to sell them a wedding cake for their same-sex marriage." The order says the cake-maker must "cease and desist from discriminating" against gay couples. Although the judge did not impose fines in this case, the business will face penalties if it continues to turn away gay
DAVID CORN: I saw a president who remains frustrated with the political-media culture that he has to work within, and that he´s looking to rally people, students here, and supporters, and people within the media. CHRIS MATTHEWS: But David Corn, you skeptic. He came to us today. He came amongst us. CORN: He´s trying to rally people behind this vision that he´s been promoting for a couple years. FINEMAN: By the way, he did it the end here, today, Chris, not by defending specifics, but by explaining why he´s in the game to begin with. And I don´t know about you, he´s
In February, the Bush family’s personal emails were hacked by Guccifer, a hacker who uncovered photographs of former President George H. W. Bush in a hospital bed and George W. Bush’s oil paintings in the process. It seems Guccifer has struck again, this time targeting former President Bill Clinton and the Clinton Library. The hacker has reportedly uncovered doodles of Clinton drawing on what were, at the time, classified documents. Among the doodles is apparently a picture of a penis. The document uncovered is a briefing of the strategic measures the United States could take prior Clinton’s decision to intervene in
Former President Bill Clinton shared an anecdote regarding Nelson Mandela and the aftermath of his impeachment Friday on CNN. Clinton revealed shortly after the “impeachment business” finished on Capitol Hill, Rep. Henry Hyde (R., Ill.) who managed the impeachment trial requested a meeting at the White House. The former president granted the meeting out of lessons of humility and forgiveness he learned from Mandela, he said: BILL CLINTON: I remember one day, oh, about a month after the whole impeachment business was over, Henry Hyde, who had run the whole show, unbelievably enough, maybe a few months after, it was
The most curious thing of all about the November jobs report released on Friday was the huge drop in the unemployment rate — and the fact that the Labor Department chose not to disclose that the data going into that figure are under investigation for falsification. On Nov. 19, I broke the news in my column that the Census Bureau, which collects data that goes into the jobless rate on behalf of Labor, had caught one of its enumerators fabricating interviews in 2010. The culprit said back then (and to me during an interview) that he was told to do so by
One definition of a pathological liar is someone who lies where the truth would serve just as well. When President Obama’s uncle, Onyango Obama, was arrested in 2011 for drunk driving, the truth — that Obama had stayed with his uncle years earlier for several weeks as a Harvard law student — would have served the president just fine. No potential Obama voter would have held it against him that an uncle he had stayed with two decades earlier was picked up for DUI. Yet the White House went with a lie, claiming that Obama had never met his uncle. Now that
On Tuesday, The Boston Globe reported that Onyango “Omar” Obama, uncle to President Obama, says that his famous nephew stayed with him while a student at Harvard Law School in the 80s, in contradiction to The White House’s contention that the two had never met. At Thursday’s White House daily briefing, Press Secretary Jay Carney confirmed that the President had, in fact, briefly stayed with “his father’s half-brother,” as Carney described Omar Obama, and that no one had actually asked the President about it when the White House initially commented. The 69 year-old Omar Obama has been facing deportation back

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) is sending out letters telling gun owners to turn over their rifles and shotguns — or else face the consequences. New York City’s ban on rifles and shotguns that hold more than five rounds is now being enforced, according to a letter the NYPD is sending out to targeted city gun owners. “It appears you are in possession of a rifle and/or Shotgun (listed below) that has an ammunition feeding device capable of holding more than five (5) rounds of ammunition.
