Ahead of a day of prayer and fasting for Syria on Saturday, called for by Pope Francis, a Christian charity working in the country said church leaders there are appealing for help, not military intervention. “As U.S. President Barack Obama rallies support for a military strike on Syria, Christian leaders from the country have called on Western nations to focus their efforts instead on providing aid to help meet the ‘dire need’ of the suffering people,” said Barnabas Fund. In a letter Thursday to G20 leaders meeting in Russia, Pope Francis urged them to “lay aside the futile pursuit of a military
Assad has protected Christians and other minorities from Islamists terrorists aka rebels. Rebels seized a town in Syria where the Christians still speak the language of Christ. Why does Obama want to support AQ in Syria? Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt? Why is Obama against Christians? Jews? . What is America´s National Security interest in Syria? None.
HHS released the enrollment numbers for the federally run health-care exchange and most of the state-run exchanges today, the first comprehensive set of data that had been released so far. Bearing in mind that it’s the first month of enrollment, and we still don’t know much about the customers, here are a few thoughts on what they show us: 80 percent (or more) of the people who’ve gotten insurance so far have done so through Medicaid: About 400,000 people who’ve entered the exchanges have been determined eligible for Medicaid, while about 100,000 have selected an insurance plan for which they’re eligible
Senate Democrats increasingly unnerved by the disastrous rollout of President Obama’s signature legislative accomplishment are bringing top White House officials to Capitol Hill tomorrow for a major meeting on the topic. The summit comes as a proposal from Senator Mary Landrieu of Louisiana to amend Obamacare to allow people to stay on their health-care plans is gaining momentum and House Republicans are preparing a test of Democratic unity with a vote on their own bill Friday. Today Senator Angus King of Maine, an independent who caucuses with the Democrats, told National Review Online he is “inclined to support” Landrieu’s bill, signaling he
House Democrats are deeply divided about how to address the problem of millions of Americans being thrown off their health-care plans because of Obamacare, with an increasing number clamoring for changes to the health-care law even as White House aides pushed hard against a GOP bill to fix the issue. At a closed-door caucus meeting in the Capitol today, David Simas, an assistant to the president and deputy senior advisor for communications and strategy, told Democrats that a Republican bill slated for the House floor would “put the insurance companies back in charge,” in the words of Representative Jan Schakowsky of
Just under 27,000 people enrolled in insurance via the federal health exchange through November 2, the Department of Health and Human Services announced today. Combined with 79,391 enrollees from states running their own exchanges, 106,185 total people have enrolled in exchange plans. HHS defines enrollees as people who have submitted their information for and picked a health-care plan for which they’re eligible; they don’t have to have committed to buy the plan or paid the first premium (the point at which health-insurance companies typically define someone as enrolled). When asked by a reporter on a conference call today whether HHS has numbers
Montgomery County police have arrested a Gaithersburg man who they say has sexually assaulted at least 10 college-age men in the last decade. Joey Poindexter, 38, of Plum Creek Drive, was arrested Saturday, after a man came forward with an accusation of assault earlier this month. The man said he met Poindexter during a night of drinking at a beer pong tournament at Looney´s bar in College Park on Oct. 3 and later accompanied him back to Poindexter´s home, where he was sexually assaulted. When detectives investigated Poindexter, they found several photos of college-age men "who appear to be in
The stampede for the exits continues at Jill Abramson’s beleaguered New York Times. On Tuesday, three high-profile names said they were departing the Gray Lady — media columnist Brian Stelter, Chief Political Correspondent Matt Bai and Sunday Magazine Editor-in-Chief Hugo Lindgren. Rumors had swirled for months that Lindgren was on the way out — having fallen out of favor with Executive Editor Abramson. And it would appear that Stelter, who had made an appearance as a guest anchor on CNN’s “Reliable Sources” over the summer — all the while insisting he had no intention of exiting the Times — may have had his
Roughly 100,000 people enrolled in health insurance through Obamacare last month – far short of the administration´s goal. The Health and Human Services Department said 106,185 people have successfully applied for and chosen private insurance through the health care law´s new marketplaces. That total is only about 20 percent of the administration´s initial enrollment target for October, the first month in which consumers were able to sign up for coverage. Officials have long acknowledged they would fall short of that target because of the problems surrounding HealthCare.gov, the problem-plagued website that handles enrollment for 36 states. HealthCare.gov has performed even worse than expected.
The news about the President´s signature legislative accomplishment continues to get worse. A new poll by YouGov finds that more people trust Fox News for information about the so-called "Affordable Care Act" than trust President Obama: (snip for chart) As you can see, almost twice as many people trust Fox than the President. Notice, too, how little CBS, CNN, NBC, Administration officials, and Democrats in Congress are trusted. Maybe it´s because such folk were all behind the President pushing this program before it crashed before our very eyes. Please also notice that only local TV news sources and Fox are actually more trusted concerning this issue
Paris -- The French government has opened a racism investigation after a far-right magazine compared the country´s black justice minister to a monkey on its cover. In a statement Wednesday, Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said he had brought Minute magazine to the attention of the Paris prosecutor, citing French law that forbids racist abuse. The magazine described Justice Minister Christiane Taubira as "crafty as a monkey" and referred obliquely to an incident when she was greeted by racist taunts from a young girl at a recent protest against gay marriage in the western city of Angers. She was also compared to a
There are too many rolling and coming catastrophes caused by ObamaCare to keep track of. Just wait until the employer market is hit late next year. But within a few weeks, a humanitarian crisis is about to hit millions who could find themselves without health insurance. Millions who had their insurance policies cancelled are now unable to re-insure themselves on the broken ObamaCare websites. In liberal Massachusetts alone, only 1% of those cancellations have re-enrolled. The Boston Herald reports that ObamaCare and the president´s broken promise have already cost 150,000 Bay Staters their health insurance plans. But of those 150,0000, only
When James O’Keefe, the guerrilla videographer who has now exposed the Obama navigators, went after the corrupt “community organizing” group ACORN in 2009, he released videos showing its employees offering advice on running brothels and evading taxes. ACORN’s response was to claim (a) the tapes were edited (b) the incident was isolated and (c) it was letting go of the employees shown in the video. O’Keefe ultimately came out on top because he released all of the unedited raw footage he had taken and released other tapes from other ACORN offices that showed a pattern. It will be interesting to see
Sarah Palin, the former governor of Alaska and 2008 Republican vice-presidential candidate has launched a tour to promote a new book about restoring the religious spirit of Christmas – in Bethlehem Township, Pennsylvania. Mrs Palin, wearing a sweatshirt with the slogan ´It´s OK to wish me a Merry Christmas!´, greeted fans at a book shop in the city on Tuesday evening. More than 700 people were reportedly at the store to greet her. She did not pose for pictures or write personalised messages in copies of her newest book, "Good Tidings and Great Joy: Protecting the Heart of Christmas." The shop opened an
President Obama announces today that he supports a “fix” for Obamacare that would allow some Americans to keep the healthcare plans they already had for an additional year. That was already built into the Affordable Care Act aka Obamacare law. It’s not an actual change to anything, it’s just an attempt to get out ahead of the bills that Republican Fred Upton and Democrat Mary Landrieu are sponsoring in the House and Senate that would legislatively “fix” Obamacare. It’s an exercise in blame-shifting, and an abdication of leadership. As news of the plan leaked, skepticism spread.(Snip for tweets)Barack Obama’s credibility
To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, you’d have to have a heart of stone not to laugh at the unraveling of Obamacare. First, the obligatory caveats. It is no laughing matter that millions of Americans’ lives have been thrown into anxious chaos as they lose their health insurance, their doctors, their money, or all three. Nor is it particularly amusing to think of the incredible waste of time and tax dollars that has gone into Obamacare’s construction. And the still-unfolding violence that this misbegotten legislation will visit on the economy and our liberties is not funny either. This very magazine has been downright
In his 2007 biography of Barack Obama, Obama: From Promise to Power, Chicago Tribune reporter David Mendell described the exchange he had with then-Illinois state Sen. Barack Obama just minutes before he delivered the keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston: After Obama and I slipped through a security checkpoint and he momentarily broke free from the entourage, I sidled up to him and told him that he seemed to be impressing many people of influence in this rarefied atmosphere. Obama, his gaze fixed directly ahead, never broke his stride. “I´m LeBron, baby,” he replied, referring to LeBron
On Wednesday, Senator Mark Udall (D-CO) introduced a bill in the Senate that would allow Americans to keep their health insurance plans for a limit of two years. “I have repeatedly said that the Affordable Care Act isn’t perfect,” Udall said, “and it will need to be improved as it is implemented.” Udall already wants to push off the open enrollment deadline on the Obamacare health exchanges until the end of May. But Udall’s plan isn’t the only one in the offing. Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) has introduced the “Keeping the Affordable Care Act Promise Act,” co-sponsored by Sens. Dianne
Something is seriously wrong with conservatism. Since Ronald Reagan’s last year in office, Republicans have only twice won a majority of votes cast for president—both times with a George Bush atop the ticket. And neither Bush was a conservative. For 25 years, something has prevented conservatives from winning the White House and prevented the Republicans who do win from governing as conservatives. What could it be? The Tea Party has an answer: RINOs—liberal Republicans in Name Only—have sabotaged the right, most recently in October when they collaborated with Democrats to raise the debt ceiling and end the government shutdown. Once RINOs are
President Obama’s former spiritual advisor Joshua DuBois joined The O’Reilly Factor to talk about his new book, “The President´s Devotional: Daily Readings That Inspired Obama.” He told Bill O’Reilly, “The president’s a committed Christian and his faith is a really important part of his life. Every single morning for the last six years he’s woken up and read these devotionals to try grow closer to God and closer to his neighbors as well.” DuBois recalled going with the president to visit Reverend Billy Graham. “He doesn’t wear this stuff on his sleeve. That’s not the kind guy he is, but he
“Even if it takes a change to the law, the president should honor the commitment the federal government made to those people and let them keep what they got.” — Bill Clinton, Nov. 12 So the former president asserts that the current president continues to dishonor his “you like your plan, you can keep your plan” pledge. And calls for the Affordable Care Act to be changed, despite furious White House resistance to the very idea. Coming from the dean of the Democratic Party, this one line marked the breaching of the dam. It legitimized the brewing rebellion of panicked
President Barack Obama issued a statement yesterday congratulating Hawaii for legalizing same-sex marriage, a move he said "exemplifies the values we hold dear as a nation." "I want to congratulate the Hawaii State Legislature on passing legislation in support of marriage equality," said Obama. "With today’s vote, Hawaii joins a growing number of states that recognize that our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters should be treated fairly and equally under the law. Whenever freedom and equality are affirmed, our country becomes stronger. By giving loving gay and lesbian couples the right to marry if they choose, Hawaii exemplifies the
Oprah Winfrey, one of the most powerful women in the world, declared she would not be stripping off her lingerie to get ‘buck naked’ on screen. The billionaire TV tsarina and occasional actress was speaking to me about her role in director Lee Daniels’s movie The Butler, in which she plays Gloria, wife of a White House butler played by Forest Whitaker. Gloria becomes bored with her middle-class life while her husband’s off looking after ‘that other family in the White House’. Oprah said that after a while Gloria starts to drink, and fools around with a neighbour, played by
President Barack Obama is expected to announce that individuals with insurance policies that are being canceled because they do not meet Obamacare´s standards will be allowed to renew them, sources told NBC News. But that insurance companies will be required to tell people re-enrolling about alternative options and the benefits they will lose. Obama, under pressure from Democrats facing angry calls from people who have lost their health insurance plans, will deliver a statement on Obamacare at the White House at 11:35 am ET, the White House said. CNBC.com will be streaming the event live.
First Lady Michelle Obama attended two of America’s finest schools - Princeton University and Harvard Law School. But on Tuesday she told a group of underprivileged Washington, DC high schoolers - many of whom are hoping to be the first in their families to go to college — that she once faced many of the same challenges and doubts as they do. “I was willing to do whatever it took for me to go to college,” Mrs. Obama said. “Get this - some of my teachers straight up told me that I was setting my sights too high. They told me I
LOS ANGELES – Despite his devotion to dinner time prayers and Christian values, "Duck Dynasty" star Willie Robertson has been axed from speaking at a benefit in Bristol, Tenn. for the faith and bible-driven organization, Family Ministries. Why? Wine. The famous family announced its latest business venture last week: Duck Commander Wines. In conjunction with the winemakers of Trinchero Family Estates in Napa, the Robertsons´ own line of Red, Moscato and Chardonnay is slated to hit stores next month. According to the Ministries, Duck Commander Wines goes against the organization´s core values.
