NSA and GCHQ unlock privacy

Guardian [UK], by Glenn Greenwald & James Ball*

US and British intelligence agencies have successfully cracked much of the online encryption relied upon by hundreds of millions of people to protect the privacy of their personal data, online transactions and emails, according to top-secret documents revealed by former contractor Edward Snowden. The files show that the National Security Agency and its UK counterpart GCHQ have broadly compromised the guarantees that internet companies have given consumers to reassure them that their communications, online banking and medical records would be indecipherable to

This is truly both scary & damning for news on how far our government has & IS STILL going to spy on US. What what ultimate purpose(s), other than CONTROL has yet to be announced. This is ILLEGAL and Congress or the Supreme Court need to take immediate action to stop it.

. . . the most closely guarded secret of all – collaboration with technology companies and internet service providers themselves.

Through these covert partnerships, the agencies have inserted secret vulnerabilities – known as backdoors or trapdoors – into commercial encryption software.

That´s it, then. We have no bloody privacy left, none, not a jot. I remember some time ago posting articles about Google collaborating with various governments and took what cyber precautions I could, but how on earth does one doddering old geezette outwit multi-gazillion dollar tech companies? It´s not as if I could instruct the bank to clean off all our statements and close down our online privileges--and even if I could, you know the gubmint has that data already copied and stashed on a cloud somewhere.

1) I find this extremely troubling, and also difficult to believe. One of the major backbones of encryption technology is the banking industry. If the encryption is not secure, that could threaten their viability.

2) all banks can take encryption to the next level, called "Physical tokens", which look like a credit card. In this system, normal login is accompanied by swiping a physical card, with an embedded strip on a reader. NSA would have to demand counterfeit copies of all the cards to login to these accounts.

Physical tokens are used in Singapore (at least until recently). Law of the land there.

Again, I don´t know if I can believe that NSA is hacking everybody´s bank accounts.

Just to add to #2, if property was embezzelled from customer accounts, by the NSA (or anybody else) at major banks, on a large scale, the officers of those banks would be legally liable, at some point. Former NJ Gov Jon Corzine was running a commodity brokerage where large sums disappeared from customer accounts. Many people demanded that he be arrested, but his political connections saved him. This would normally not be the case.

As I said on another post, multiply encrypt any important document.

NO one can decrypt a document with multiple (5) encryptions. It would take the fastest computer a million years to get past the first 2 iterations...and that´s a guess.

Outgoing Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius lobbied several private companies to support Obamacare while the program was struggling to sign up enrollees, a new investigative report found. Ms. Sebelius personally spoke with the leaders of five major healthcare and financial firms to get them to support Enroll America – a nonprofit organization set up to enroll uninsured Americans in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), according to records reviewed by the Government Accountability Office, Congress’ watchdog arm. The solicitation was legal according to federal regulations,

(Snip) Now, in his final years in office, Obama has trained his sights on prisoners like Scrivner, and wants to use his previously dormant pardon power as part of a larger strategy to restore fairness to the criminal-justice system. A senior administration official tells Yahoo News the president could grant clemency to "hundreds, perhaps thousands" of people locked up for nonviolent drug crimes by the time he leaves office — a stunning number that hasn't been seen since Gerald Ford extended

The Connecticut Democrat called the news conference after announcing a $552,000 fine for Metro-North Railroad over "shameful" safety violations. A federal appeals panel in Manhattan ordered the release on Monday of key portions of a classified Justice Department memorandum that provided the legal justification for the targeted killing of a United States citizen, Anwar al-Awlaki, who had joined Al Qaeda and died in a 2011 drone strike in Yemen. The unanimous three-judge panel, reversing a lower court decision, said the government had waived its right to keep the analysis secret in light of numerous public statements by administration officials and the Justice Department’s release of a “white paper” offering a detailed analysis of why targeted killings were legal.

Kiev, Ukraine - For two weeks, the mysteriously well-armed, professional gunmen known as “green men” have seized Ukrainian government sites in town after town, igniting a brush fire of separatist unrest across eastern Ukraine. Strenuous denials from the Kremlin have closely followed each accusation by Ukrainian officials that the world was witnessing a stealthy invasion by Russian forces. Now, photographs and descriptions from eastern Ukraine endorsed by the Obama administration on Sunday suggest that many of the green men are indeed Russian military and intelligence forces — equipped in the same fashion as Russian

For Hillary Clinton, having her own baby grandchild to kiss on the campaign trail, could be one of the biggest boosts to her possible presidential election campaign. DeBonville has heard about the “come as you are” approach to dressing down for Sunday service, but he says the Sabbath is getting too sloppy. When he scans the pews of churches, DeBonville sees rows of people dressed in their Sunday worst. They saunter into church in baggy shorts, flip-flop sandals, tennis shoes and grubby T-shirts. Some even slide into the pews carrying coffee in plastic foam containers as if they’re going to Starbucks. “It’s like

President Obama asserts that 8 million people have signed up for Obamacare, as though that were something to be proud of. As the number of subsidized participants grows, the disaster gets worse. Charles Blahous explains: Our national discussion…is missing the truly significant story here; what is unfolding before our eyes is a colossal fiscal disaster, poised to haunt legislators and taxpayers for decades to come.
